Is a nice starter camera if you're planning on shooting for fun.

Purchased for a student in second year photography class and it has worked out well.

The Nikon 5300 I bought is my first DLSR camera. I have had Nikon cameras before but they were wet film SLR cameras. I am amazed at the Nikon technology and quality. So far, since I bought it in Jan,'15, I have taken it to Banff, Canada, and Turkey/Greece. I have shot about 1500 or so photos. I am simply amazed at the performance of the camera and the quality of photos in a very wide range of situations. I bought the camera body only and the Nikkor 28-140mm lens. This lens is simply awesome. It is the only lens I have and I am glad. I have no need so far for any other kind of lens. Perhaps later, I may get a longer telephoto lens. But this lens has the range for almost everything I like to shoot. It is compact, has a very good range, and takes lovely shots. Also, I don't have to lug extra lens weight around with me. If you are somewhat knowledgeable about such cameras, this is a great first buy with which to start and get some experience making terrific memories.

bought this for taking and having great pictures of my newborn and family in future. also recreational as have always loved photography and have never had a high end dslr ultil now. stayed in the thousand range not ready to step up to 3thousand up priecd dslrs anytime soon. this one does a good enough job couldnt be happier. i bouth it mid december take picture with it almost every other day still. so much to learn and appreciated with this camera.

I went with someone to purchase one of these, but please note (for potential buyers): THIS IS NOT A FULL-FRAME DSLR. It is categorized (for some reason by BestBuy) as being one in some Search results, but it is NOT. It is a DX (cropped) camera, which still makes it a great camera. Just don't want anyone to be mislead into thinking this is a full-frame camera. The D610 and D750 are full-frame cameras (as are others listed here) but the D5000-series are NOT.

I'm a beginner photographer and this camera is GREAT for me! It's easy to use and takes excellent photos.

This is my first dslr camera and I must say I'm very impressed. The image quality is amazing. Very happy I went with the 18-140 lens, the zoom is great. I also purchased a 35mm prime lens for the camera. Two great starter lens and perfect for a beginner. I do alot of casual photography for myself, nothing professional.
