Gloriously Overengineered

I have owned many, many different bags, backpacks, and luggage sets over the years. And many have been very good. However very few end up lasting more than a year or so – possibly due to a tendency to push them right up to their design limits, then add just one more pair of pants in to keep me from having to check a bag. As a result I've learned not to get too attached. But after spending a week with the Nomatic backpack, I've had to break that rule.
From the moment I opened up the box to find a (slightly pretentious) poem describing Nomatic's mission statement to make bags for “life on the move” I knew that this was going to be a product that took itself perhaps a bit too seriously. But there are cases where that can be a good thing. And luggage intended to carry around $2000 of laptop and all the clothes and supplies you need to spend a few days (or a week) away from home is definitely one of those.
It appears that the goal in designing this bag was to create something that is meant not only to carry your laptop along on the plane will you, but your entire office. With dedicated compartments for both a laptop and a tablet, the option to invisibly thread charging cables into almost every compartment, and a zipper design that'll let you basically unfold the whole backpack into a desk/display case, this pack is more than willing to enable your tech addiction wherever it may take you. And unlike most laptop bags which throw in some semi rigid foam padding and call it a day, the designers of this bag have gone the extra mile to make sure it's all protected too. The entire case is waterproofed (including the zippers). There are RFID shielded compartments to store a wallet to keep your cards safe from anyone trying to skim them at the airport. And while it doesn't actually have an internal frame, the thickness of the rubberized exterior combined with a rigid case for your sunglasses offers a very good amount of protection from crush damage. In fact I can go so far as to say that should an over-eager toddler accidentally step on it in their haste to get off the plane and into Disney World, your laptop will be (thankfully) safe from harm.
As much as I love this bag though, I do need to admit there are a few downsides. To start, the ergonomics aren't exactly great for someone like me with an unusually long torso. Now, to be fair, this is a common problem in backpacks but I'll admit I had hoped that this one with its slightly ludicrous attention to detail might have done better than most. In order to get the bag to sit properly to avoid straining my lower back I need to let the straps out a fair bit, which ends up raising the chest strap a few inches above my nipple line. It's not unusable there by any means, but it's also not what I’d describe as completely comfortable either. Making either the straps or the semi-rigid frame they attach to adjustable to accommodate different torso lengths would be a great upgrade should they ever decide to release a backpack version 2. Also, while I appreciate the addition of the expandable cargo compartment, the fact that it shares space with the laptop carrier makes me a little hesitant to fully use it. It's just a little too effective at compressing clothes and other soft objects down to easily fit underneath an airline seat – and I can't help but imagine my laptop being crushed by my laundry. Maybe one of the newer MacBooks with their fully aluminum bodies would be able to take it, but I'm not nearly confident enough in the plastic shell of my daily driver to chance it without some kind of rigid internal reinforcement to hold the socks at bay.
Overall though, my views on the backpack remain overwhelmingly positive. I look forward to subjecting it to many more years of habitual abuse on my travels.

Most of review on similar travel backpack apply (5 stars there), but this one is 4 stars. When expanded/zipped open, the additional space is negligible and not easy to access. The additional amount spent on the same model but with the full zip open (additional 10 liter capacity) makes all the difference.

I’ve had this backpack for about a week now and love it. Its extremely comfortable when I put it on my back.
The clean and simple design is perfect for the office. Initially I thought the backpack wouldn’t fit all the stuff I have ( laptop, AC adaptor, folder, mouse, pens, battery back up, etc), but it did and the bad didn’t expand.
The different pocket and compartments are thoughtfully made.

I used to not be a bag person until I started travelling a lot for work. Before, all I needed was a bag that looked nice. Bags are bags—they carry stuff—so for me, I was at least after a bag that looked better than a plastic bag being hauled around the airport. I do have several decent bags as gifts from people who care. Leather laptop cases, high-end sling bag brands (my girl knows how to gift), etc. However, this backpack is so far the best I have had.
1) The compartments—I don’t think you can have so much. I tried being very organized in my stuff. Claritin always in one pocket. Sunglasses in the safest outer pocket. Easiest slide out compartment for my laptop. Keys in a smaller hidden pocket alongside my wallet. An ID slot. A Phone slot. Inasmuch as I try to keep up with where I place my stuff, each pocket ends-up being a chopsuey of items—headphones, receipts, name it. The magic of this bag-- it has SO MANY compartments. I cannot emphasize this enough—SO MANY. Now I can even segregate my receipts that I use for personal stuff and reimbursable ones. It has a dedicated case for sunglasses that DO NOT GET SQUISHED. Work badge in one, IDs in another. Even the water bottle compartment is not just a catch all net on the side—it tucks nicely if you don’t need it. I don’t think I can ever have enough compartments, but dude, I’m kidding you not, you will not know what you need until you actually have them.
2) Quality-- It. Looks. Good. The touch, the stitching, the shape. I got complements on it. Some don’t even know the brand. Now they do. Oh you know what, I made the mistake of bringing it to SeaWorld because it was the only bag I had in my car and I then I needed to bring a towel and some water bottles. IT GOT WET. I felt bad it did. But guess what—besides my stuff inside staying dry, the bag itself is in perfect shape. I was afraid that fishy water will tarnish the outside—not a bit.
3) Size is perfect. Slips right under a smaller plane. I flew into Roanake VA—those smaller cities that don’t have too many people travelling into. The bag slipped right under those tiny cramped seats.
4) Best part for me—the fit of the backpag. For some reason, it supports my posture. I have good posture, by the way. I have had good posture all my life—but never have I worn something that actually supports my back. I never knew I wanted that comfort until I walked around with it. Such a relief.
This backpack is engineered so well. A lot of features I did not even know I needed until I used it—this bag is totally worth it!

This backpack is absolutely perfect for a laptop and some personal essentials on a trip. Construction is solid and the dimensions are just the right size for an overhead bin on a plane (don't they always seen to be getting smaller?I )
I think the asking price is a little high but for something this well built plus the fact that it's water resistant, it's all about keeping your belongings safe while being fashionable and functional at the same time.
A very nice backpack, but again, I think the asking price is a little too high.

The Cargo Pants of Backpacks

(Note: this review is for the Nomatic expandable backpack, not the Travel Backpack which is different)
This backpack has so many pockets that, if you're like me, you'll forget where you stashed everything. It can hold quite an array of gadgets including 15" laptop, tablet, power cords, keyboards, phones and more. There is also a hard removable case for glasses or other delicate items. The sides have water bottle sleeves that magnetically fold shut when not in use.
If you carry a lot of tech, there's hardly a reason why you would not be able to secure your gear somewhere in this bag. And there's still enough room left over to add additional stuff like papers, folders, notebooks etc. I was even able to use it for an overnight trip with my laptop gear, plus a clothes folder and toiletry bag. If you need more space, say for 2 nights, there's a zipper to expand the capacity from 20L to 24L.
Walking around with this on my back was comfortable as an average sized guy (5' 9"). It's well cushioned and has a sternum strap, though the strap's vertical position is fixed. The shoulder straps can be tucked away when you don't want them dangling. When pulling stuff out, I had no problem keeping the bag upright while removing my laptop and other gear. The bag can be worn as a backpack; or you can use handles to carry it vertically or horizontally; or it can be slid over roller luggage bars.
The one feature that could be better are the zippers. They are not as smooth as I would expect for such a pricey bag. Plus, because of the clam shell top design, they tend to stall around the curvature. I would knock a half star off for that, making this 4.5 out of 5.

Great functionality

I am an employee of Best Buy and I am very impressed by the functionality of this backpack. I wish I had this backpack when I travelled more for work. This bag has so much great design and so many options built into it. Here are a few features I like. 1. The full perimeter zipper so you can fully open the bag versus just access it from the top. 2. The internal hard shell case to protect glasses or sunglasses. 3. The water bottle pocket to keep your hands free. 4. The design that lets you carry as a briefcase or a backpack and how well it sits on the floor when you are in the airport, in an office, or conference room. 5. The numerous, thoughtfully designed pockets for electronics, storage, etc. 6. How well it fits and slides under an airplane seat when you’re traveling. This back pack along with the Nomatic carry-on or carry-on pro would be perfect for the road warrior, consultant, sales professional, that is on the road for a few days each week and wants great design and functionality.

To start, this backpack is clearly a quality bag. Everything about it speaks of quality of construction and thoughtfulness in design. From the magnetic drink holders that snap closed when the drink is no longer in them, to the included sunglasses case, everything was thought of.
I came from a backpack that was at least twice this size and managed to fit everything in this bag. I was concerned originally that it might be too small, but I've had no issues fitting all of my stuff into it, including 2x 15" laptops (one in the pocket designated for it, and another in the pocket in front of that one). The overall number of pockets inside this bag is phenominal. A place for everything and everything in its place.
To top it all off, the back of the back has a zipper that goes around the outside and allows you to expand the bag to fit even more stuff in it. I haven't had to yet, but it's a nice option that it is there.
I feel like the strap hiding option is a little gimmicky because even in the professional setting I see people wear in backpacks everyday, so making this look more briefcase like is kind of a non-issue. It's already more professional looking than most things I see everyday.
The zippers around the top of the bag are a bit stiff, though I figure that will loosen up the more I use it.
Overall I'm very happy with the bag, the streamlined and sleek look is very nice, and the fact that I could fit the stuff in a bag twice the size into it was very welcome.

I've had this bag for two years now and it's really great. It's my all-purpose backpack: days I'm in the office, I can easily fit my computer and other work stuff in. When I'm traveling, not only can i fit all my gadgets and gear in this bag, but I can also fit my toiletry bag and a few days worth of clothes thanks to its expandability. I'm leaving this review now as I came to check to see what other products Nomatic offers now. I'd happily buy more of their products if they're as useful as this bag has been.

Premium backpack

Nomatic makes bags like no other manufacturer. There bags are made of premium materials and with the consumer in mind. This backpack is made exceptionally well and from early testing and use it seems like it will hold up extremely well. Some of my favorite features are the glasses holder, the chord pass through, many many pockets and organizers, expandability, and many other great options. I love the ability to pack away the straps and carry it like a brief case. This makes it a great commuter/work bag. The only downside is that I found the straps do not pack away flush as well as they could. This bag is smaller than some over there other bags but I think it’s the perfect size for short day trips or just your everyday bag. It can definitely be used for travel but Nomatic does make better options for multi-day travel. It is easy to tell that a lot of time and development went into the design of this bag and it is unlike any other backpack I own. If you’re looking for a premium and quality bag look no further.
