one of the best turn based jrpgs on the switch. great combat and the individual stories for each character are great, however the characters never interact with eachother about one anothers arc nor is there a central overarching story.

As a die hard JRPG lover, especially one who lived through the definitive era of said genre, the 16-Bit era to be exact, this game is simply AMAZING!!! It hearkens back to a time where gaming was all about simply fun and enjoyment and not so caught up on how photo realistic you can be or frame rates and all that nonsense. Just simple, beautiful, well done game design that you can appreciate and enjoy. If you love JRPGs or are new to them, this is a great one.

This game has about 60-70 hours of gameplay. Turn-based combat is smooth and the storyline is great as well.

It’s the best RPG in 10 years. The game is long and giving and cute. The music. Let me tell you about the music. So good.

I was excited for Octopath Traveler since it's first reveal, the soundtrack was amazing, the visuals were really cool and it just seemed like it was gonna be a great JRPG.
Unfortunately though it didn't live up to my hype.
The character really don't interact with each other very much at all and there's really no interconnected story. Every character each has their own stories you play through and it's not something that appealed to me.
The combat is pretty fun, but the world design and annoying lighting are downers for me.

A great throwback of SNES RPGs of the 90s

If you grew up playing RPGs on the Super Nintendo, this is a great game that is reminiscent of games from that time period. The graphics and music are beautiful, and the battle system plays similarly to the turn-based style of the early 90s (note that the game does not have an Active Time Battle setup akin to Final Fantasy IV or VI; it's more akin to the turn-based approach of Final Fantasy or Final Fantasy X).
The "HD-2D" approach of the graphics will remind you immediately of the sprite-based styles of SNES-era games, with the added bonus of enemy sprites being in greater detail than your characters, and boss sprites being both huge and very well detailed. However, there is more than just sprites and pixels. Due to the "HD" in "HD-2D", and the Switch's engine, shading and ambient effects are present too, which go well with the pixel-based approach.
The game also sports a job system, with enemies awarding JP that can be used to teach your characters abilities. Between the game's unique battle system and the abilities of the jobs, the battles feel fresh and require some elements of strategy. The game was created by the team that made the Bravely Default games, so if you have played those and like the battle system, Octopath Traveler won't disappoint. The only part about the battle system that may disappoint is that the game feels grindy at points. For me, that is not as much of an issue.
All in all, Octopath Traveler is a great RPG to have on your Switch. Due to the Switch's portable nature, you can take it on the go and grind out some EXP and JP whenever you feel the itch to play.
If you are on the fence about the game, I would encourage you to download the three-hour demo available on the Nintendo e-Shop. If you like the game, you are able to copy over your saved progress from the demo into the full game and resume where you left off.

I had never really played a JRPG before and this game has been a great place to start. Though the story is chunked into 8 stories, it is nice that I always know clearly what I should be doing. The combat is really fun and satisfying.

After beating this game 100% including the post-game semi-hidden final boss I can honestly say I have no desire to ever see let alone play this game and its waste of time story ever again.
That said, even though it has long been clear to me that Square was never going to be able to top Chrono Trigger in my heart (not even with Chrono Trigger itself as the dubious PC port has proven!), I think this title actually trades blows with Final Fantasy 6 quite well. To wit, although FF6 has better characters, a more meaningful story, and tighter progression, this game has much better systems all around in my opinion.
I'd still probably recommend picking up an SNES Classic for the combination of FF6 and Earthbound instead of this game if you had to choose between the two for some reason, though.

Love the story and gameplay. I didn’t like that your team don’t get experience points if they’re in the bench.
