What's great about it: The IBIS (In Body Image Stabilization) makes your still camera act like it's on a Steadicam (which I've used as a pro) What's not so great: The manuals are mediocre (both printed and .pdf). This water-and-dust-resistant camera produces outstanding prints and video. I've shot one-handed, while driving a race-car-stiff Prowler, at night (ISO 6400) at a 1/40th of a second exposure, and gotten crisp, clear images of other moving cars. Olympus' new 5-axis IBIS is UNBEATABLE by ANY other camera (including full-frame cameras costing 3 times as much). The Prowler shot I've included was shot using only the existing traffic lights (there are no lighted buildings behind me...just empty desert). The E-M5's grain at ISO 6400 is very film-like, with just a little nicely randomized chroma- and luminance-grain. Other cameras (NEX-7, NEX-5N, A-65, etc.) have problems with their chroma-noise clumping together at high ISO, putting ugly color blotches into the image. Do image comparisons at the dpreview.com E-M5 full review, between the E-M5 and any other camera you're interested in, and see for yourself. I added a ReallyRightStuff baseplate/handgrip for a more-secure handheld feel. Keep in mind that this camera is best for camera operators/still photographers with some experience...it would be a shame to leave the E-M5's many, many options unexplored by somebody who needs a point-and-shoot. Get this camera at LEAST a week before you must use it, so you have time to try all of the options.

Overall a stellar package with the kit lens. The obvious items are that this is a really small package for SLR capabilities. I get really sharp photos overall and very little noise in low light. There is a big system of excellent lenses available from Olympus, Panasonic, Leica and some other third party manufacturers. You can get almost any glass you want at this point, which is unique for a "compact system camera" (ie Sony NEX, Panasonic G series, Nikon 1 series, etc.) Two things convinced me to buy this camera: 1. I tried it in the store with the 45mm F1.8 lens and was able to take shots of black objects at 1/4000 sec with barely visible noise at ISO6400. 2. I waited for the dpreview dot com review, and their assessment was it has the best photo quality you can get without stepping up to a FULL FRAME SLR (not the common SLRs, but the $3000+ ones that add up to a 10 lb camera bag with lenses). I used to carry around my Olympus PEN and an SLR. Since upgrading to this from my Olympus Pen I stopped carrying the SLR altogether except for wildlife where I need my long lenses. I take a lot of photos of my fast moving toddler and get great results with the quick shutter speeds. Kudos to Olympus for getting the Sony sensors into your cameras too. These are the same ones Nikon uses in its SLRs. This is the first generation of Olympus that is NOT using the Panasonic sensors and the noise and sharpness results are a big step forward. Can't believe I'm the first reviewer. Guess it's too bad Olympus doesn't have the same marketing muscle as Nikon. These were fly off the shelves.

As an avid amateur photographer, I have owned and used high end point-and-shoot as well as full DSLR cameras. For my money this camera gives a lot of both. Image stabilization for both still and video works beautifully. If you are thinking about buying this camera, do the research on some professional camera review sites. The 43 mirrorless technology systems may not be for everyone, such as some dedicated landscapists. If you decide to buy the camera, spend the extra money for the 12-50mm lens. I have tried out both with this camera and the 12-50mm is, in my opinion, of a far better build and image quality. It would be worth investing in an additional battery and (portable, nonproprietary) charger down the road. Be careful to precisely attach included (or professional) shoulder strap or wrist strap as the camera's grip, such as it is, can more easily slip out of grasp than would a larger DSLR with a heavier, more substantial grip.

After much debate about this camera vs. a standard DSLR, I opted for the Olympus OM-D; it took a little while to learn/teach yourself some of the intricacies of the camera, but the results are fantastic. Love the image stabilization, auto-focus features and the overall portability of the camera. Great for photographers who want great image quality without the bulk of a DSLR.

This is my third Olympus camera and I love it. The camera is easy to use, light weight and has a nice selection of lenses. This will be my first experiment with anything but a point and shoot but I'm glad it will be with this camera.

I love this camera! I bought it about 3 weeks ago and I am completely satisfied! It does everything I want it to do plus more, that I am figuring out. I am getting ready to buy another lens to do even more. Very happy with this camera/lens combo!

Before anyone buys a DSLR, one should read all about the new Micro Four Thirds cameras first. And this OMD EM5 is just fabulous.
