    Gaming Beast!

    Posted .

This gaming desktop from HP (Omen 870-224) is awesome all over. Lets talk aesthetics first: -The case is elegant, with very nice ambient lights, and above all, its not your average bulky gaming case, but it gives you all the options of expansions you expect from a high end expandable gaming case. -It is also super silent although it has giant fans. Expansion and ports available: -The mother board is the Odense 2-K with the H170 chipset which is UATX form factor. -It has 2 DDR4 slots for Ram, this desktop comes with one slot used by an 8 GB DDR4 Ram, so you can add more. -The CPU is the latest Core I5-7400, also expandable to the newest I7 -It has a 1 TB SATA HDD with 7200RPM installed (you can add more as you wish. (I will be swapping the hard drive with 2 SSD drives with 480 GB capacity each) - The board is also packed with a very advanced BT/ Wireless/ Gigabit network card. - The case has 7 USB ports, 4 of them are USB3 - 3 HDMI ports- 2 on the MB and 1 on the VGA card (this one comes with a true 4K resolution output) - 7 in 1 memory card reader - The display card is the mighty NVIDIA GeForce GTX1060 (3GB DDR5) that comes with a dual link DVI port and 3 display ports & 1 4K HDMI output port. - Your everyday DVD writer (vertical position) Performance: This is where things gets AMAZING! I hooked the case to my 65 inch 4K TV via HDMI cable plugged into the VGA card, using a wireless keyboard and touchpad from Logitech to turn this gaming pc into a Gaming/ Media center at home. The most noticeable thing beside the amazing performance of this piece of beauty is how silent it is. The case is well built and ventilation is very well designed. The case has a huge 500 WATT power supply, and a fan mounted on the back of the case, in addition to the fan and heat sink installed on the VGA card itself. With all that, when playing really demanding games with all display features turned on to the max, this PC remained silent. I have been using the PC for a couple of days now and It is easily offering a matching performance to my PS4 and beating my PS3 with ZERO lag or any other issues. The 4K experience is also mind blowing when using the PC instead of my smart Tv’s own engine. I have not yet tested the GTX 1060 3D video performance, but I am sure it will be great. This PC is customizable, and can last at least another 3 years of gaming as is, and when needed you can upgrade the VGA, CPU, Ram, and HDD. This will give you another 3 years of high performance at least. I am very happy with this PC and I totally recommend it to anyone who is into gaming and have a relatively small space for a case. The Omen comes with a wired keyboard and mouse.

    Not just for Gaming

    Posted .

The HP Omen 870-224 desktop celebrates my return to the world of PC gaming. For many years, I've stuck to consoles and used my Mac desktop for other pursuits. I got a taste for Windows 10 using my work laptop and really liked the capabilities, so when I was looking for a powerhouse desktop, I looked at the HP Omen 870-224 model. For starters, this thing is a beast when it comes to specs at the price point it's at. For $800 you get the following specs: * Intel Core i5 3 GHz Kaby Lake Quad Core * 8GB DDR4 RAM * 1TB 7200 RPM hard drive * 3GB GeForce GTX 1060 The motherboard and case also come with a variety of ports to connect all your devices. The case itself is an attractive brushed aluminum and the built-in HP Omen app lets you customize the lighting on the front of the case. Right now, I've got it set based on CPU temp to keep an eye on how it responds to gaming and video encoding. That brings me to the other reason why I wanted a powerful desktop. I also create videos for communication, training and web delivery for my work and need something a bit stronger than the basic laptop they gave me. I've used Premier Pro CC and Handbrake on this thing and it encodes movies at least 2-3x faster. As you can see from the screenshot, the first game I put on here to test it out was Doom 4. I got Doom 4 when it came out on the PS4 and it always made my PS4 sound like it was about to lift off from all the fan noise. I started playing Doom 4 on this - and even maxed out the video specs to "High" or "Ultimate" and all the while, this thing stayed super quiet and the light on the front stayed a solid green, which meant the air flow cooling was keeping the system working fine. No stuttering or lag to worry about here! I've also kinked it up to my Microsoft account to get the developer previews to test those out - even running a beta version of Windows, this thing still hums along rock-solid. My only real gripe with the desktop was actually the keyboard and mouse it came with. This machine is touted as a gaming PC, yet HP chose to package it with a basic USB mouse and keyboard. So if you're really serious about gaming, get yourself a good keyboard with backlights and a better mouse. If you want convenience over functionality, then go with any of the MS wireless keyboard and mouse combos. The basic set this desktop comes with is the same as you'd see at an entry level price point. All-in-all, this desktop is a solid performer that gives my iMac a run for it's money in terms of form, function and experience. If you're a solid Windows fan that wants to game and be able to do other more intensive projects, this is the desktop for you!

    Power Gaming Gets More Affordable

    Posted .

I've mostly been a console gamer for the past several years and this was my first chance to try out a higher end desktop PC that is designed with gaming in mind. I was pleasantly surprised with its performance. This system is good for the PC gamer that doesn't like to build their own towers. The cost is reasonable considering the specs, as you can run any game out there and not have issues with frame rate. I won't get into the specs, as you can see them in the item description. I loved the adjustable lighting feature on the tower. I set the lighting to mirror the temperature of the CPU so I could tell if the system was running too hot. This helped me ensure I had decent ventilation around the tower and wasn't overworking the processor. The lights never went red, even when running some of the more graphic intensive games out there. This unit comes with a basic optical mouse and keyboard. I was not a fan of the keyboard. While it was sleek and stylish, the keys are far too short and small (like a Mac keyboard) and I would make many typos with it. Fortunately, most PC users have a USB keyboard that we like already so this was not an issue for me. If you need a gaming PC and don't know how or don't care to Frankenstein your own together, I highly recommend the HP Omen. HP does a great job of combining enough RAM, processing power, and graphical power at a price that is easy on the wallet.

    Rank Up Or Be Forgotten

    Posted .

Coming from someone without much of a technical background, it's easy to say that if you're in the market for a new gaming rig (that you can use for work or school too), and this is around your price point, this is a no hesitation buy. The graphics card is great enough to play most games, the Core i5-7400 7th gen processor is more than sufficient, and with Windows 10 already installed, I can see this being a perfect high school graduation gift right before college.

I use this PC for Gaming and Streaming

This is a good gaming computer. Games Played: PUBG: Max settings Assasin's Creed Origins: Ultra Settings Farcry 5: Ultra Settings Fortnite: Ultra Settings VRChat: High Settings Dreams of Dali (VR game): High Settings I'm a bit older so HD is HD. I used to game on a crappy computer around the COD 2 days in the 2000's. I converted to console throughout high school and college.. and noticed one thing,Things have drastically changed. First, The games look amazing. I got this because I really wanted to play and stream PUBG. PUBG is a very demanding game for computers. Bugs constantly plague players, I've heard that there are optimization issues with GTX 1080i. I have played on a system using GTX 1080 and felt the bugs. but with This HP Omen and the GTX 1060, the game runs on highest settings with absolutely no issues. I did experience frame drops while recording on OBS which caused me to scale down graphics to Medium settings. again, still looks great, still able to stream at higher resolutions. I have also used this computer to create a small VR video game on Unreal Engine. Unreal Engine would not work on my Apple computer but it worked great on this PC.. and even better after upgrading RAM. I did add minor upgrades to the build with stuff i got off Amazon. As stated in other comments, this is a good starting point for upgrades. I upgraded with a D.M.S. 8GB RAM and attached an internal Kingston SSD. All very cheap components/easy DIY projects. I noticed a huge difference with the upgrade in RAM. Its now at 16GB RAM, and 480 SSD and 1TB HDD. It runs very smooth. and the case provides plenty of room for extra HDD and installation was really simple, mostly just watched youtube videos. there was one empty SATA imput that i saw. and one extra slot for a 4GB or 8GB RAM. Dual Monitors: I am fortunate enough to have an extra DVI cable from my 2011 Apple computer. I was able to connect Dual monitors with one HDMI and one Dual-link DVI cable. If the Video card is plugged in, the multiple HDMI ports on the motherboard will not work. There might be a way around this, but i haven't looked to deeply into it. I think its in the NVIDIA Control Panel. This might be a deal breaker for many VR/dual monitor people. USB Ports: I am able to connect my USB Yeti Mic, M.S. HD webcam, PS4 controller. Keaboard and Mouse: They function as an essential tool to start with, but I recommend ditching them and getting something custom. Overall, this has been a good buy. I've always dreamed of playing on PC and this computer really opened up many possibilities without breaking the bank. A great transition from Console to PC. I can finally play with my PC friends and have made some new ones along the way. this is a good buy because most of the upgrade costs were on the cheaper side. looking forward, i may upgrade to the i7 processor (as stated on the HP website) just for the experience, but no rush. I'm pretty satisfied with everything. I mostly went with this model because it came with an Intel Processor and GTX 1060 3GB. After doing tons of research, i found Its Very hard to find both at a lower price range. This PC provides both Intel/GTX 1060 at the cost of low RAM/Memory (which I upgraded). This computer is Over-kill for casual use and should be used for gaming or even editing.

Pretty good entry level gaming rig

    Posted .

The HP Omen gaming desktop is a pretty good entry level gaming rig. The desktop is pretty elegant to look at with the aluminum finish and variable lighting on it. It is packed with features like a 3GB NVIDIA GTX 1060 graphics card, Bluetooth 4.2, built-in wireless networking, 3 HDMI inputs, DisplayPort and 9 USB ports, 5 of which are USB 3.0. After unpacking and connecting the components, the first thing I did was download all of the updates. There were updates to the graphics card and some critical Microsoft Visual updates and Windows updates. After trying to download them for several hours and having them fail to install, I reset my PC twice and the updates finally installed. This was frustrating, but seems to be common for me when updating Window's based computers. Not a big deal since they ultimately installed. I also noted that there wasn't as much bloatware as usual with this PC. Most apps can be uninstalled with the exception of a few to include the Xbox and Twitter apps. The main complaint I have is that it didn't come with an SSD drive. Although the 1TB 7200 rpm drive is faster than the standard 5400 rpm drive, it is still no comparison to the speed and boot time of an SSD drive. I am considering upgrading mine and using the 7200 rpm drive to backup the SSD hard drive and to store movies and photos on it. The boot time was roughly 30-35 seconds from a hard power off. That is pretty slow when you want to log on to check something really quick. I am using an HDMI cable to connect the PC to my monitor and I learned the hard way that with the three HDMI inputs, the two located on the bottom are not for the monitor. There is a third HDMI input on the video card that you use for the monitor. I went out and bought a new monitor and then ultimately returned it, thinking it was faulty and bought a different model. Only after searching Google, did I realize that I was using the wrong input. The monitor makes a difference in the gaming experience. My BestBuy didn't have the model I wanted in stock (ASUS VG24H) so I ended up buying an HP 23ES with HDMI input. Admittedly, its not a gaming monitor, but I will pick up the ASUA once its back in stock. Ideally for a gaming monitor, you want something with a response rate under 5ms and with a displayport connection as well as a high refresh rate. While you are out upgrading your monitor, I would recommend upgrading your keyboard and mouse as well. The mouse worked well enough, but I prefer a wireless setup. The keyboard however seems really small and awkward for a keyboard with number pad. All in all, this is a good entry level rig that has some room to be upgraded as you want or need to. This PC may not be ideal for the hardcore gamer, but those just starting out or on a budget but wants the option of upgrading later will appreciate the Omen. I would recommend this as it is performs well, has plenty of inputs and can be upgraded down the road. Would definitely upgrade to an SSD drive though.

    A Silent Rocket

    Posted .

Imagine the now retired NASA Space Shuttle taking off and reaching a super sonic speed minus the sound of the blasting rockets which you wouldn't be able to hear in space anyway. That's how it feels when you use this HP OMEN. The difference is that it makes no sound during takeoff either. It is always silent and cool even while I play Battlefield 1 with all its bells and whistles turned on. The case looks great for a gaming PC and if you like to show off, the customizable ambient LED at the front which transitions from blue to red to green and everything else in between will certainly grab everybody's attention. The included 1TB HDD is fast too although I would still recommend swapping it with an SSD and making it a secondary external drive just like I'm doing. 9 USB ports (5 USB 3.0 and 4 USB 2.0) is likely enough for your needs. Good to see that you can easily upgrade RAM since it uses only one expansion slot with the included 8GB. Included are 3 HDMI, DVI and DP ports for up to 4K output and the most important thing for gaming: a good graphics card which in this system is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX1060 with 3GB DDR5. Of course there are games out there that will require an even higher end machine for maximum performance but if you are not an extreme hard core gamer, this is more than perfect. It does work relatively well with Oculus Rift headset as it is but if you want to live in the Matrix without being aware of it, upgrading to i7 and NVIDIA GTX 1080 Ti graphics card or at least GTX 1070 is the way to go. Just be prepared to spend a lot more. Battlefield 1 played amazingly well in a 1080p monitor. Image was even more stunning on a 4K TV and it played well there too although at lower frames per second which is expected for any graphics card less powerful than a GTX 1080 or at least a 1070. Things I didn't like about this system were: - The keyboard and mouse. A machine like this one certainly deserved a wireless gaming mouse and keyboard. Since it is a very affordable while still decent gaming PC, you will probably have some cash left for that type of upgrade anyway. - Apparently, only one internal SATA connector. You can't add a SSD without swapping the hard drive. Summary: A good performer and good looking and silent PC that you won't regret to own unless you have at least twice as much cash to spend on a higher end model and you are a hard core gamer at the same time.

    Awesome gaming desktop!

    Posted .

I'm impressed with this desktop for an all around setup to use for PC gaming. Out of the box setup is super easy! It was ready to go with only minimal software pre-installed. The customized HP Omen Logo on the BIOS and the Windows 10 boot screen is a very nice touch and makes it feel like a nice gaming machine. In addition, the lighting on the case can be customized with the included control app - again a nice touch! It has built-in Wifi, and Bluetooth so there's nothing you'll need to add to it. The case itself is also nice and is easy to open for upgrades. Out of the box, this PC performed solid in all of the testing I did. I play several Blizzard titles regularly and this machine handled all of them fine (World of Warcraft, Diablo III) along with Halo and Call of Duty with the graphics turned up all the way with both HD and 4K resolutions. in HD (1920x1080) it performs smooth with all of the games I tested, and in 4K the games seemed to also perform well with some minor performance issues on certain titles/scenes but not bad by any means but this is more to do with the graphics card than the computer itself. It supports dual monitors which is a huge plus too/ This rig is perfect for my gaming needs and being able to upgrade the graphics to a higher end card is a HUGE plus so if my needs change down the road it's easy to change it. While I didn't test out VR the driver reported the system as VR Ready according to the NVIDIA app so you should be all set there if you're looking to try out VR gaming. One of the things I tend to look at with desktops is being able to upgrade components later (like a higher end graphics card or additional hard drive) and this machine's graphics can easily be upgraded and even has a large enough power supply to support an upgrade. The only thing in terms of upgrades that I didn't like was there was only 1 available SATA port so you won't be adding more than 1 additional hard drive or solid state drive. The optical drive doesn't appear that it can be upgraded easily to a bluray drive which is something I wish it had. In all, the HP Omen is a solid performer with some upgradeability and is a great gaming machine.

    Great Gaming PC!!

    Posted .

The HP Omen is a great gaming PC for anyone who desires to go into the world of gaming animation and acquire high-end results while doing so. The unit has factory specs that can match custom gaming PCs easily without the burden of emptying one’s wallet. When testing games such as Battle Field 4, and War Craft, the computer ran the games at high-quality rate. Also, I will mention the graphics were simply amazing to watch! The machine itself boasts a beautiful brushed silver/gray aluminum chassis frame that promotes a rich feeling to the user. The changing spectrum colors of red, green, purple, blue are truly visually appealing. The i5 processor is fast and it does a great job of performing everyday tasks such as movie watching, music playing, document duties, etc in the Windows 10 environment effortlessly. The only improvement needed is the wired keyboard and mouse. The keyboard has a flimsy feeling to it and I suggest upgrading to a keyboard and/or mouse combo that has the capability of handling intense gaming. With new technological advancement, the wired “thingy” is kind of old and outdated. It gives the feeling of restriction and gamers because of the intenseness and excitement while amidst a game, don’t need any restrictions. Overall, this computer is a great choice for the adventurous gamers who love pushing a PC to its limits. I believe the Omen will serve from novice gamers to expert gamers quite well. Additionally, the machine is upgradeable if the gamer discovers the need for more.

    An Excellent Entry-Level Gaming Rig

    Posted .

The HP Omen is an excellent all-around computer, but doesn't hit very many of the major "tick boxes" people investing in a gaming PC are looking for. However, with a few upgrades, this can be a great gaming PC. The Intel Core i5-7400 processor quad core processor provides excellent gaming speeds, up to 3.0 Ghz. It also features 7 USB ports to support all of your gaming peripherals. Paired with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card with 3 GB of GDDR5 RAM, you're looking at an impressive gaming rig. The HP Omen features the ability to change the color of the lights on the tower. You can have them do a solid color, a light show, or use the color of the tower to indicate the CPU load or the CPU temperature. Not only is this cool, it can be quite handy. The included keyboard and mouse will be sufficient to get the computer setup in the first place, but if you are going to use this system as a gaming PC, then you need to at least get a better mouse, with more weight to it, and some extra buttons. I was surprised to see this system didn't have an SSD or a hybrid hard drive. Having upgraded my 8 year old computer with an SSD prior to getting this system, I saw how dramatic a difference an SSD can make in startup times for both the OS and individual games and apps. Also, 8GB of RAM may be a bit low, depending on the games you are playing, but adding RAM is easy and fairly cheap. Overall, this is a great starter gaming PC that will allow for plenty of upgrades for the future to come.

Solid Specs with Only A Few Deficiencies

    Posted .

The HP Omen desktop is a solid performer having the latest Kaby Lake Intel processors and an Nvidia 1060 video card. The unit also looks great with a multicolor light vertically on the front. I do flight simulation and loaded up X-Plane 11 which is the latest version and pretty power intensive. I set all graphic settings to the highest levels and the game ran smoothly which was a bit surprising. I also loaded Starcraft 2 and used Ultra settings and the game ran flawlessly. My only concern is the unit came with 8 GB RAM. For a general purpose desktop this is sufficient but for a gaming machine more RAM is better. I did purchase an additional 8GB RAM for $50 and it made the system run even better. It should be noted that the unit can also be upgraded from the i5 processor installed to an i7 at a later time if desired. Overall pleased with the system and performance I have seen so far.

Overall, a very capable midrange gaming computer

    Posted .

The HP Omen (870-224) is a good midrange gaming machine that should play just about anything with decent frame rates on all but the most graphic intensive games on the highest graphics settings. In Modern Warfare 4 I was able to set the graphics quality to Ultra and still got over 90 frames/sec. However, don't expect to run Deus Ex: Mankind Divided on Ultra, or even Very High at 1440p and get even 60 fps. For that you'll need more horsepower and/or a GeForce® GTX 1080 Ti. Still, the GeForce GTX 1060 is a very good graphics card for the price. My only complaint is boot times and how long it takes to get to the desktop (full disclosure: my current computer has an SSD). Boot times seem a little slow and it regularly takes 15-20 seconds after entering my password to get to the desktop. This was observed on a stock install with no applications installed. It wasn't enough for me to remove a star, just a little annoying. I noticed disk usage pegged at 100% for a couple of minutes at Windows startup, so I'm guessing that has a lot to do with it. I'm planning to install an SSD, so that should rectify most of the boot issues. This is a very capable gaming computer at a reasonable price. For the majority of games available, I think this is a great platform. Overall, I'm very happy with it.

It has all the routine bells and whistles I need, is fairly fast (but not super speedy), and I kind of like the variable/changing mood lighting that runs along the front of the case. The only drawback for me is that it is NOISY, much more so than those I have built. It also has USB port in the top cover (dust gets in there as there is no cover) as well as audio porting. I bought a 4-point USB port dock and recommend that wholeheartedly as a must have.
