I was in the market to upgrade our home stereo surround sound receiver to a 8K/4K compatible network receiver and landed on the new Onkyo TX-NR6100 THX certified network receiver because of all the features and having previous experience with Onkyo receivers. The other Onkyo receiver I currently have and am using in our other room is only a couple years old so I was familiar with Onkyo’s on screen software set up which doesn’t appear to have changed much with the exception of adding some additional features. After plugging into all six of the HDMI inputs and connecting all speaker wires that I already had ran in our room, the on-screen menu was easy to navigate for first time or experienced users. Once I connected to my existing wireless network, there was a software update for the receiver which took only about five minutes. After that, I customized the input names for my devices as to avoid any confusion when toggling through inputs. I then used the included Audessy microphone and automatic tuning to ensure I was getting the best sound for my Atmos set up being that my speakers are quite far from each other in the movie room where we have this set up. I am using new Klipsch speakers with this receiver which pair well and sound amazing. In the Onkyo on-screen set up, there is an option to automatically pair certain Klipsch speakers to ensure you are getting the best sound. I am hoping there is another update to their software soon as none of the new Klipsch speakers I have connected were listed yet. During setup, I also paired my Google and Amazon account for their music streaming services and my separate Sonos system as well. With 100-watts power per channel (at 8 ohms), the Onkyo receiver provides plenty of power for our set up in the 27’ x 15’ room we have it in. One of the main selling points for me was having a Phono input with a ground as we have a vintage record player in that room as well. The receiver has two subwoofer preouts, a coaxial digital input, a fiber optic digital input for those still using that technology, both AM/FM antenna connections (antennas are included in the box). There are three (3) 8K HDMI inputs for when that newer technology becomes more available but also great for the newest gaming consoles that support it and three (3) 4K inputs. It also has two HDMI outs, one that is compatible with 8K/4K (sub or Zone 2) and one for 8K displays. There is an ethernet input if you prefer a wired network setup but using the wireless set up worked just fine for me. Next to the ethernet input and on the front of the receiver is a USB port that can be used to plug in streaming media sticks, your smartphone, etc. I was a little disappointed to see there was not an additional HDMI input in the front of the receiver however I really don’t use the one we have on our other receiver that often so it wasn’t the end of the world. The remote is pretty basic with all the controls you need and, using the ARC HDCP 2.3 technology with the HDMI input, it can be used to control other compatible TVs, projectors or monitors. The LED screen on the front of the receiver was plenty bright enough for any room and uses big enough font to be able to see it from further away. Overall, considering the options, power, network capabilities and THX certification, this is a great receiver for most in home set ups unless you really need more power. I like they are ahead of the game with 8K HDMI inputs/outputs and, at this price point, feel it was just right for our set up and would recommend it to anyone in the market for a decent receiver from a reputable company that has been around for decades and that won’t break the bank.

This review is for the following 7.1 setup: Onkyo TX-NR6100 receiver Klipsch R-101SW subwoofer Klipsch R-30C - center Klipsch R-40SA - height surround Klipsch R-50M - back surround Klipsch R-600F - front speakers It was time to upgrade my 20 year old 5.1 system that didn't really have much bass to the latest technology. Let me just tell you, huge difference. I first tried to use the TX-NR6100 without going through the initial setup. I do not advise on doing this. I had trouble getting Chromecast and Alexa setup. It comes with two sheets providing a scan code for instructions on setting them up. It wasn't much instruction and just said to follow on screen instructions. There were no other documents included so I had to go to their website to get the full manual. Since I skipped the initial setup, some of the screens didn't work right. When I finally got my speakers setup, I started over and was able to get Chromecast setup. I messed up the first time because when Google home searches for the device it comes up with the id as "I&O&P". This doesn't sound like something that would be associated with this receiver so I was hesitant to add it. I was able to find the mac address after a while and it was indeed the receiver. Once I selected it was quick to add to my home. I still haven't been able to setup Alexa but I could get Amazon music to work. You can view instructions on the screen of the receiver or on the TV. The TV has some pictures it cycles through to keep from burn-in when not in use. Then I downloaded the Onkyo MusicControl app. It was easy to setup and recognized my receiver right away. You can control all the music apps through MusicControl. Some of the apps are Amazon music, Deezer, iHeartRadio, KKBOX, Napster, Pandora, Qobuz, Radio.com, SiriusXM, SoundMachine, Spotify, Tidal and TuneIn Radio. The only app I have access to is Amazon Music. I do not have accounts with the other ones. Amazon Music works flawless with this however it can only be controlled through the phone. If your phone isn't connected to the same network as this receiver you cannot use Amazon Music. Tune-in Radio on the other hand is built in to the receiver and works without your phone. There is an option to calibrate your speakers during initial setup. There is a mic provided to help doing this. It plays several audio tones to get the sound from your speakers just right. There is also an option in setup that is made just for Klipsch speakers too. Make sure to do the system update under Network. It was fast and easy. There are many listening modes to chose from for movies, music and games. Each one made certain sounds pop out more or less. My favorite is DTS Virtual:X. You can play through bluetooth from other devices or you can play to a bluetooth speaker. I don't think you can play through bluetooth speaker and your normal speakers at the same time. I dont' have Apple so I cannot comment on AirPlay. I was suprised at the weight of this receiver compared to my old one. Much lighter. I was a little worried that the R-40SA wouldn't sound great due to its size but as a surround speaker they sound great. The R-50M sounds almost as good as the R-600F. Just a little less bass. Speech comes through nice and clear in the center channel. This has got to be the best 10" subwoofer I have ever heard. It completely fills the whole room with bass. No weird distortions from the speaker or box, Just awesome bass. You can control the bass with the gain and low pass knobs on the back to get the perfect punch that you want. You can also put it on standby mode so that it will shut off if it doesn't detect any sound. Speakers arrived on a palette. The boxes made them seem larger but it was just good packaging. The grill came with some packing behind them for protection. The grill is also magnetic except on the subwoofer, so they are really easy to remove and put back on. On the back of the R-600F it has two connections at the bottom. The main and the height. You can connect your R-40SA with supplied cables to the Dolby Atmos connection in one of the pictures as long as you have wires running to the height connection at the bottom. I have included pictures that show the vinyl up close and they look great with the copper colored speakers. The tweeters on these speakers let you stand anywhere in the room and still get about the same awesome sound. The copper colored speakers provide a nice mid-range. Each speaker on its own doesn't do much but when you combine them all it is audio bliss. Sounds just come from every where while watching a movie and the explosions make you feel like you are in the scene. I can actually hear things in songs I didn't hear before. Even at high levels they still sound great. You will not regret this purchase. Really happy to own this setup.

I've been an Onkyo fan for quite a long time. When we all got trapped inside during the first part of the pandemic, I started researching AVRs in search of an upgrade for my aging 705 and 606 receivers. I was dismayed to find that Onkyo was in dire straights. Last year when it was announced that they were being added to the Voxx family and tightening their partnership with Klipsch, I was thrilled both as an Onkyo fan and for the home audio business in general. I'm really in love with the Onkyo TX-NR6100 and think it's an incredible value for a feature packed receiver. Features I love: 1) an ethernet port AND wifi - I have ethernet in every room, so I want to use that whenever possible, but having wifi available is a great option 2) Chromecast built in - I love that it has chromecast audio streaming built into the receiver, and that when you choose to Cast to the Onkyo AVR, it automatically turns on. That's one less thing I have to fumble with the Harmony app for. Bravo. And the front display shows the track title. Another bonus. 3) HDMI for zone2: not a feature I am going to use right away, but having the option to drive a projector or even another room with the HDMI 'sub' out is a major plus at this price. 4) Gaming features: having VRR for 4k on the HDMI ports is an awesome benefit for Xbox Series S/X and for PCs with HDMI 2.1. 5) Perk for Klipsch owners - there's an automatic EQ setting built into the receiver to take advantage of that special relationship between the companies. With that selected you can be assured you're getting an experienced tuned especially for the classic horn tweeter config of Klipsch speakers. Things I don't like: 1) I don't have a lot of complaints, but when testing with my Roku Ultra (vs the Shield TV Pro I normally use in this room) the audio for some apps did not work until I paused and restarted the source - but only when HDMI CEC was on. Once I turned off CEC (which I don't need anyway), this problem went away. And it was only with the Roku ultra, and only with certain apps. Just a weird quirk. 2) I really like the Android app to control the receiver, but it does feel a weee bit under-developed/unpolished. 3) I wish there was a proper "Atmos" logo that lit up on the front of the receiver. You can see when Atmos is running (it turns off the D.Surr logo but the DD logo stays lit along with all 7 speakers), and you can see it through the very cool audio/video info part of the app, but I still wish it had a nice big logo on the front. I'm vain, I guess. So, if, like me, you had been waiting with bated breath for Onkyo to rise like a phoenix, your time is here. Not only are they back, they are back with a killer deal for a receiver with 8K and 4K VRR inputs along with TWO HDMI output zones. Definitely worth the wait.

    Good Network A/V receiver

The receiver is excellent although I am only using two channel stereo at this time. I like being able to switch HDMI sources without an external box and being able to access internet stations through the receiver. My major criticism is that the only operating manual is an online download of a PDF file which is 176 pages. The labeling of the selections on the remote are curious ("STRMBOX, PC, GAME, BD/DVD) - see attached photo, but a cheat-sheet would help remote users. This is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5. This replaces my previous Onkyo receiver, so some of the commands from the old remote work (volume UP and Volume DOWN) on this receiver.

Bought this for are community theatre room in the clubhouse. I specifically bought it because of the connectivity to the internet and accessories. It processes the Epson projector and the surround is pretty good. I could have bought a cheaper receiver but it wouldn't give us the flexability as this one. We have guests use the room for making computer presentations also. Not a real tech guy so it takes a bit of reading to understand all this receiver does but it works great.

This receiver is a marvel of innovation. It is more powerful than it looks. It’s quiet during operation. The controls are simple to read and it just looks so good with everything. As flyer I calibrated the Klipsch speaker system and subwoofer to my listen area, it did not disappoint. Excellent sound reproduction through the speaker system. Easy to read dials and remote. It’s just a smooth operating system.

It has buttons and displays and things on the back! In all seriousness, I still have my old Onkyo from like 15-20 years ago, and it is still reliable and revered for its build quality. This, is pretty much the evolutionary heir to throne of that one. Very similar build quality, hefty but not heavy. Yes, the display is pretty plain and dated - so what? If your focus is on aesthetic nonsense like display "wow," you might as well get a cheap lesser-known brand with gimmicks instead of quality and performance. Or, why not waste a ton of money on some pretentious "designer" brand unit. If you are an audiophile, cinephile, or even just an immersive gamer - you need to grow up from second-rate sound setups. Onkyo NR6100 is the best all-rounder, best value per watt, best build quality for the price range, and it has proven sound quality with that THX certification. You simply can't make a better choice than this unit (unless you need more than 7 channels - this unit can't help you with that one).

I had a Marantz SR7009 that recently started having major problems with input switching and other basic functions. That receiver was a 9 channel amp, capable of driving 11, whereas this Onkyo only has 7. Since I only have a 5.1 speaker system (ELAC), and since i couldn't afford a more comparable replacement, I took a risk on the Onkyo. After a firmware update and room correction was applied, the results were amazing. I am actually hearing subtle details in movie soundtracks that I missed on the Marantz. Dialog is much clearer. The Onkyo has an inferior DAC, but playing the surround mix on the Dark Side of the Moon SACD never sounded this good. The Onkyo Android app works great; I used it to set up Amazon Music integration. I can't recommend this receiver enough for this price point!

I'm really happy with the Onkyo TX-NR6100. I don't recall the last time a receiver sounded almost perfect with the equalizer in default-flat mode. I use Chromecast on a daily basis by asking the Google Home speaker to play music. The Google Home speaker is configured to automatically play on the Onkyo. The Onkyo turns on automatically and starts playing. The apps is also very useful to quickly increase the Dialog/Center Channel clarity for movies. One useful feature is the ability to limit the max volume to prevent children from raising the volume and potentially damaging the speakers. The size of the receiving is rather tall similar to typical receivers. Please be sure to measure the location and these receivers also need good ventilation.

Great system handles most modern setups. Setup is simple and no fuss. Loads of audio videon connections well laid out excellent home theater performance, strong gaming compatibility (HDMI 2.1, 4K/120Hz, VRR), and robust streaming options. It’s considered one of the best sub-$1,000 receivers, though some reviewers note its music playback isn’t quite as dynamic as higher-end models.

Great receiver for the price. Even better when it goes on sale every once in awhile. I have this paired with an older take classic 5.1 surround system (just the fronts and centers) as well as a klipsch r-100sw. After calibrating the speakers with the built in calibration feature, the sound was amazing. I played a few songs using the receivers built in network feature connected to pandora. Sound was full and pleasant. I then watched the first episode of Dare Devil: Born Again and the movie Logan. I didnt even focus on the speakers as they seem to blend right in to the scene. Hoping to expand for full surround later. I also played some games on my ps5 and the HDMI passthrough and E-Arc audio connection worked flawlessly with the HDMI 2.1 features. The controller is small and compact although the buttons are a bit mushy for my liking. So much so that youre not sure sometimes if you pushed it down far enough to register a button press. All in all, a great receiver.

I’m no audiophile but I can say this receiver is great! The sound is really good. 3 of the inputs are HDMI 2.1 @ 40Mbps. So it’s works with my Xbox Series X. BUT if Freesync is important to you be advised that this receiver does NOT pass through Freesync data. Not the receivers fault. EARC simply can’t handle it. Everything else works including VRR. My workaround is to connect my Xbox to the tv and since that has EARC too I am still able to get Dolby Atmos. So the only thing I am sacrificing by connecting it like that is DTS audio. That being said everything sounds fantastic through this receiver and it’s easy to use and set up. Definitely prefer it to the Denon receivers I was looking at.

I am not currently using this as a home theater amplifier, but for two channel audio/video as well as a video switching device for multiple gaming systems. I use the streaming services I already pay for, like Sirius and Amazon Prime and like it very much. I utilize it with my iPhone for streaming content from my phone. I have had ZERO problems with any facet of using the device with Bluetooth, Airplay, Ethernet connected, 2 XBox systems, or 4K Bluray player. If anything, my only complaint is I cannot figure out to have the unit not automatically turn on when I turn the TV on. At first I thought it was because I was using the ARC HDMI port, but it didn't matter which HDMI port on the TV I used, the unit always turned on the second the TV comes on. I have a really high end Yamaha HT amp that does NOT do this unless it is hooked up to the ARC HDMI port. Overall, this a great unit, other than the one minor complaint. The sound is excellent and I hope to add more speakers for the surround sound at some point, but since it is on a gaming only TV and not in a setting where HT surround sound is necessary (I already have a decent set up for that), I am in no rush to add the additional speakers. I would definitely buy this unit again, especially at the bargain price I paid for it - not the normal asking price. I also like the fact it has "tuning" buttons to alter the amount of treble and bass in the system, making it a little more tunable to the room acoustics.

I bought this to replace an older Onkyo receiver (TX-NR555) that did not support 4k at 120 Hz. This has all of the same features and will let me use my game consoles at full resolution/refresh rate. Sound wise, it is hard to tell the difference between this and my old TX-NR555 in most use cases, though for some movies this seems to not pack quite as much punch. In general, movies and music sound great, and it supports all of the latest codecs like Dolby Atmos. My main gripe is that it regularly decides to lose connection to the Onkyo app, and I have to unplug/re-plug it to get that back. I like to use the app to control volume and other settings from my phone, but have taken to having the remote nearby in case the app doesn't connect. The only other issue I have is that when watching movies on my Xbox Series X, I get a loud click/pop sound when it switches between previews/pre-show items on a blu-ray. That didn't happen with the TX-NR555, so I think it is the receiver. It only happens when switching from one to the next, so it seems related to how it handles the different codecs that may be thrown at it. All in all a good receiver worth the price.
