This receiver is good in a small room. I use this for my office so the receiver and speakers (2 channel) is 3 to 5 feet away. So I do not need to up the volume. I do plan to get better speakers. Has plenty of HDMI. Also an optical input which is what I use for my computer. This unit does not have wifi so if you need that you will need to look at another model. If you need a receiver for a bigger room or demanding speakers go for Onkyo RZ50. I have been using that one for 2 years and that is great for home theater.

Works great. There is something about the sound from Onkyo. Like it has something special that makes the sound more real. It's hard to explain but it just has a level of quality you have to hear to understand. I'm 100% satisfied and the unit works great! Also The open box quality was just fine. I always trust Best Buy on there judgement on how they grade there products.

I really wanted to like this receiver but ultimately returned it. A dedicated set of buttons for source selection and tone control without the need for menus is a daily convenience unavailable in competitors. A decent array of inputs and the ability to handle 4K video and contemporary audio formats such as Atmos at this price point is attractive. Sadly, I could not get the HDMI ARC or CEC features to work with my Sony Bravia KDL-55W800C TV, which supports both features (for exchange of both audio and inter-device control via an HDMI connection). A full afternoon on the technical support sites of both companies yielded no solution, and I'm an electrical engineer and audio enthusiast. One other quibble is that it was difficult to determine if the device firmware was up to date - I kept getting cryptic error messages even following the instructions carefully (which involves downloading new firmware onto a USB stick - rather archaic). I never got to the point of evaluating sound quality. For many users these issues may not be deal-breakers, but they turned me away.

This is a very solid, BASIC 7.2 receiver.
The front display looks like it should be on a 90's washing machine. I'm trying to see it as "ïronically retro" LOL.
Otherwise, it does just what it supposed to do. Sounds pretty good too. I'd say it's a fair deal.

I had to replace a sony that was a replacement of a nice denon i had a few years ago. The sony only lasted 3 years before it stopped reading the hdmi inputs. I was going to replace it with another denon and get a better one but then this one was on sale for so cheap i decided to wait a few more years to update speakers and receiver. So running my 10 year old polk speakers and honestly its a solid unit. My polks sound way better that the sony ever did and seems so far to be holding up well. Set up was fairly standard and no complaints. Honestly for the price of this im extremely satisfied.

I recently picked up the TX-SR494 and I’m glad I did — it’s a solid entry-level AV receiver if you want immersive home-theatre sound without spending a fortune.

Purchased to replace a Pioneer Receiver I’ve had do about 10 years , I’ve know had this recover 6 months now it pretty solid , I like having the 4k pass thru for my consoles , sound is good and it has good power , when watching movies the sound is clear and crisp and yes it also depends on you speakers but overall it’s a solid good sound receiver with good power , good menu and easy to switch between devices.

This receiver really packs a punch. The best value for home entertainment system. Simple to navigate setup on your TV screen. Plenty of reserve power to use with or without a subwoofer.

Great value for the price! I needed something for my record player. I even went to Goodwill but it turns out they don’t check to see if those work. They only check to see if they turn on. Typically I would buy from Amazon but the staff were really helpful so I bought it. The return policy is just ok but the convenience of living 2 miles away beats online

Would have given it 5 stars but the center, surround, and zone B speaker outputs are the cheaper spring-tab type connectors, not the heavier screw-in knob types found on the main two speaker outputs, and it is a bit limited when it comes to the on-screen display choices, but it is really good overall for the money. Great sound and real good choices for audio output levels, surround sound choices, etc. OSD is good for these basic settings.
Replacing a TXNR656 that gave me problems with HDMI output until it just quit within the first six months. Sound setup was completed and good, so I just ran the HDMI straight from my DIRECTV unit to the TV for video. Been living with that setup for last couple of years. (Was not able to see or use OSD with this arrangement)
This unit is working great, and I am very pleased with it. My wife likes the direct input change buttons on the front and remote. Bluetooth connection ability is a step up. Got it on sale for $100 off while on vacation in Mississippi.

Its a plug and play receiver, nothing special about it. Sounds good. If its your first system, then it will be a good unit. But over time you will want to upgrade. So either buy it knowing you will later on change it. Or just bite the bullet and go for something better.

After 20 years with SR 502 I had to replace it with this one. This one puts out sound I’m use to however I had to return it after 2 weeks as it was overheating and kept powering on and off.Best Buy replaced it with no questions asked.New unit seems fine no overheating. I am still an ONK fan not ready to kick’s to the curb.

Very diverse settings, plenty of features for hooking up devices to play through the unit. Has a sound mic to help the system balance output through the various speakers at the seat locations. Significant upgrade to our existing stereo unit.

Has issues with HDMI triggering "safety"

I've spent a couple sad days digging through the internet and a couple ai trying to figure out how to stop the "known issue" about this unit and HDMI CEC. The unit goes into safety mode and will not power on. I have 1 roku, 1 blu-ray, and 1 dvr for security cameras running to it, then its hooked to a tv.
To fix the non-start, I have to disconnect the incoming HDMI cables, unplug from the wall, hold the power button for 15 seconds, then plug it back in and it'll work. It works fine after that, sounds good, but trying to get the uh, "less technically inclined" wife to do this daily is NOT going to happen. So back it goes I guess. Huge disappointment.
