My 2002 receiver didn't have new modes or HDMI. I replaced the TV and decided to modernize everything. I am very happy on how it works as a system.

Onkyo TX-SR494

Works great with 5.1.2 setup with no issues. Only confusing thing is the firmware update. Onkyo website shows that there is a newer version available but the update didn't install so ended up calling Onkyo support and they confirmed that this is mistake on their website and my receiver already has the latest firmware.

I have a 3.1 setup with a mix of speakers from Infinity towers to a Jamo center channel and an over hauled Klipsch Subwoofer{new plate amp} It sounds amazing for movies, sports and music, I like quality over quantity and this does very well. Delivers the sound you want very cleanly IMO.
