It says self cleaning but I did a lot of cleaning. It juiced fine. Takes a lot of fruit/veggies

Lots of parts to clean. Not really self cleaning. Machine seems fragile and doesn't seem like it will last a long time.

Oster calls this a “juice extractor,” but let’s face it. It’s a smoothie maker, that’s what everyone will call it, and that’s what I’m going to call it here. It also claims to be a “self-cleaning” juicer. Read on for my comments on that! Smoothies are popular drinks. They’re made with all kinds of combinations of fruits and vegetables, and the drinks created can be quite healthy. Several fast food outlets offer smoothies, and you can buy pre-made smoothie-type drinks in the health food section of your local grocery store. I can see, though, why people might want to make their own smoothies. Obviously, you can do it right there in your kitchen. You can make exactly what you want. You can try different combinations of fruits, vegetables, and other ingredients (I added Worcestershire sauce to one as called for in a recipe). If you’re a health-food afficionado at all, this kind of control over your beverages can be very appealing. It’s easy enough to make the smoothie. Gather your ingredients, prepare them (clean, peel, whatever), and then put them into the top one at a time, switch on the machine, and press slowly with the pusher. The machine makes quick work of the food, putting the pulp in one container and the juice in another. You can make a drink consisting of a large number of fruits and vegetables very quickly. I made a drink consisting of eight tomatoes, four celery stalks, a carrot, and a peeled lime in less than two minutes. Enjoy your drink, because then the fun begins, and now you begin to realize how convenient it can be to simply buy your smoothie premade at the store or food stand. Cleaning the juice and pulp catchers is simple. Remove them and rinse them. The top of the unit, a large, clear plastic piece, removes easily as well and is easily rinsed at the sink. But the food chopper itself is a different story. It has small but sharp blades, and it is not removable from the machine. Rather, you go through a cleaning procedure which entails making sure the pulp catcher and liquid catcher are in place, filling the food pusher with water, inserting it a certain way, switching the machine’s motor to “clean” mode, and gently pushing down on the food pusher to open a valve at the bottom to let the water out. (What's "self-cleaning" about this is beyond me.) The water swirls around and around and collects in both the pulp and liquid catchers, cleaning bits of food out of the various crevices and other hiding places in the process. This does work, and it had better since there is no other way to clean this part of machine, but it often took at least two and sometimes three passes with the food pusher full of water to fully clean the machine. Even then, if the food you had used contained small pits, like a tomato, those can become lodged in the small blades of the chopper, and the only way to get them out is to pick them out one at a time with the tip of a small knife or something similar. So, in short, this machine makes great smoothies, and it does so quickly. But then be prepared to spend about three times as much time cleaning the device as it took to make the smoothie. As I said at the top, I think this will appeal most to dedicated health-food types who drink vegetable and fruit-drink-based beverages all the time and want to be able to make their own. For the more casual smoothie drinker, the involved cleaning process may cause you to come to appreciate even more store-bought vegetable/fruit drinks. I give it four out of five stars because of the overly-involved cleaning process.

For the price it's adequate in performing the job. Self cleaning doesn't really clean the filter, still needs manual intervention.

I had to return this juicer it did not work i had to exchange it for a different brand.

If you want to be 100% sure what is in the juice you or your children are drinking this makes it easy and fun. Juice can also use in recipes. Could not be easier to operate – just turn it on, put your fresh fruit/veggies into the large 3-inch food shoot, press down with plunger and out comes fresh juice. What’s not to like and definitely recommend? Stainless steel base has powerful 1000-watt 2 speed motor that makes easy work of both hard and soft foods. How powerful? I turned on the juicer, as is requested in the instructions, then put in first section of small apple and before I could put plunger in place it had “spit” it out thru the shoot and onto the counter! So, make sure you are prepared when using. I found it to be quitter than expected when operating. Juice cover is clear plastic so you can see what is happening as juice is extracted. 5 cup juice collection jar with lid and a froth catcher Has “auto-clean” function that basically “flushes” the entire system using water without taking anything apart. But it is extremely easy to dis-assemble and clean with its BPA-free dishwasher safe parts. A few recipes are included in the instructions. Searches will provide a huge selection to choose from. 3-foot cord that can be used from either side of base. Also, it can be wound up on the bottom of the base but you need to turn it on its side to use. Comes with 1-year warranty Quibbles If hand washing components be careful of some sharp edges/protrusions. I scratched up my hand on the juice cover Nice solidly built juicer I think would be a welcome addition to any kitchen and do recommend.

Gently used, and well maintained but stopped working

I had high hopes for this juicer because Oster was the brand recommended by two friends who juice. I'm not a new juicer, but I wanted to try the self cleaning feature. I had the first unit for less than a week and it stopped operating on the 3rd attempt. I exchanged it for the same model only for it to stop working during the first use. Very disappointed. Exchanged for a brand I'm more familiar with. After reading other reviews online I realized I am not the only person who had this issue. I was really looking forward to a fruitful relationship with my Oster. Instead I opted to spend a little bit more money for a better quality item.
