I finally decided to cut the cable cord and it was the best decision it was a no brainier. I have sling and the local channels come in with an antenna using the Air TV Streaming Player. It was easy to set up and now our TV service has been cut by more than half.

Works as advertised. Integrates Sling TV with your OTA channels in one guide. Also allows remote/out of home access to your guide for web based viewing, if that's important to you. Only limitation is the quality of your reception. Allows OTA recording to a supplied hard drive.

I bought this with the hope of getting the stations I wanted. But when I found out that my tv didn't have the app needed to wireless connect to the unit. I called customer service and all they said was the app should be on that particular TV. I rechecked with no luck. Unfortunately, there is no way to connect directly to the TV, the antenna goes to the unit and the unit is suppose to connect wireless to the tv which the tv needs the app to connect.

I was setting it up, when it asked me to DL the Sling app. One way or another, i couldn't get passed the credit card info. You can't have something for free and give credit info. Its not how it works. Was really hopeful, but its just as much bologna as those other wanna-be DVR. Ill just wait till the Tivo's go on sale and buy one. At least they are up front about charging me, and i dont mind paying $6.99 for everything i want, plus more.

Hi there - I think there may be some confusion on this. You can use the Sling app free of charge by creating a guest account. You can do that through this URL: https://www.sling.com/airtv
There are no monthly fees from Sling, or credit card information necessary. AirTVSupport

Good real-time OTA viewing, troublesome DVR

    Posted .

AIrTV works well when watching live OTA channels. However, the DVR has lot of issues. I won't recommend AirTV if one likes to record a lot of OTA programs. It's almost impossible to watch a recorded program while another program is being recorded. Especially if you are fast forwarding commercials while watching a recorded program (A) AND a new program is being recorded (B), the playback of program B will have lot of issues later on. The hard disk is not able to keep up with all of these operations. I wish AirTV was more explicit about this in their website. I have one of their recommended external HDDs (Western Digital 1TB My Passport Portable External Hard Drive). I just talked to their customer service and I was recommended trying an SSD. I would have bought an SSD instead of a regular HDD. Also, Sling/AirTV frequently "forgets" where the playback of an OTA recorded program was stopped. Next time when you want to continue watching, it'll take you to the beginning of the program. Now you'll need to fast forward which can effect the quality if a new program is being recorded meanwhile!

    Fantastic Little Box!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The AirTV Player from Sling is a nice little android box, geared strongly toward Sling subscribers. Though I’d never have thought of buying one, I Saw it on sale at Best Buy and took a chance on it (GLAD I did!). There was a SLING Credit in the box, so I redeemed my coupon, booted up the box and began exploring … I’m having a gas with this! First of all, you can pull your OTA channels in from your Antenna and incorporate them right into the guide … your Sling channels and OTA channels are all on the same guide, same grid and get the same treatment. Further - you can select specifically, which GROUP of channels are displayed in the Channel Guide and Grid. So, for non-Sling subscribers, you can select OTA only (or Favorites only) and you get a nice little TV box with your OTA Channel Guide. Apps and Google , The Google side of this box uses the Android TV OS. So far, I’ve installed Hulu, Vudu, etc. and side loaded VPN & IPTV services. When you are on the “Google” side of things, you’re running it as a straight Android TV Box, no Sling, no OTA, just Android TV. To get back to the Sling side, just click “Guide” button. If you’re a Sling subscriber, you have a cloud DVR which functions well, but costs an extra $5.00. For your OTA channels, there’s a Two-Tuner DVR in the box. Records to your own Thumb Drive or External Hard Drive. It works, and because it’s relatively new, I’m looking for improvement here in the future (or a new box in development?). I’m not crazy about Sling TV (nothing bad, nothing good, just have a solution I prefer), but I love this funny little box. It is NOTHING LIKE some of the negative reviews I've seen on Y..Tube and nothing like some of the demos there. They’ve continued to make nice changes and improvements on this box, since it was first introduced and have turned out a great product. No, it’s not a Shield, it’s not a Skystream, but it doesn’t pretend to be. It's much more … a great little Cord Cutting appliance and I think it’s a gas. The Air TV Player is the BEST little experiment I’ve tried in ages, with an IMMEDIATE Return on Investment! …

Perfect Sling TV App Integration of Local Channels

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I love this little black box. You don't have to be a Sling TV subscriber to use it, but Sling subscribers will get the most utility out of the device. Simply, it is a network device that attaches via Wi-Fi or Ethernet and contains two HDTV tuners. You attach your antenna and, set up the software on either your iPhone or Android device, and the locals stations appear on your Sling TV grid alongside your subscribed channels, complete with all scheduling information. If you are buying it to use for that purpose, and you are also using a Roku, Fire TV or nVidia Shield (Android TV) device to access your Sling TV, I highly recommend this product. Please be aware of the following BEFORE you install and configure your AirTV. You can use the device on your home network to send your local channels to other Android and iOS devices even if you are not a Sling subscriber, but if you are a non-Sling TV subscriber, you have to download and install the separate AirTV software on your Android or iOS device and configure the AirTV with that software instead of the Sling TV app. The two softwares are mutually exclusive. If, for some reason, you ever decide to switch from one software to the other, you must do a factory reset of the AirTV and re-configure it. As a TV tuner, AirTV works seamlessly and perfectly. The picture quality on your locals, of course, depends on whether your antenna picks up a clear signal. I live close to my stations and have an antenna in the attic, so the picture quality is fantastic on the locals- as good or better than some of the Sling channels. I am a full-fledged geek with my tv set up. I also have An HD Homerun Quattro tuner on my network, as well as a TiVo Roamio feeding my Livingroom TV, and two other TVs via two TiVo minis. Why, then, would I need the AirTV at all? Often, I’m streaming TV via a Roku, Fire, or Android device. With the AirTV on the network, I can view my “cable” channels and locals in one app, without switching to another device. Sling TV does not offer locals in my area (which is one way it keeps its subscription prices so low). This box provides seamless convenience and flawless delivery of my locals within the Sling TV experience. For that convenience alone, it is well worth its price to Sling subscribers. You can also use the AirTV to record local channels by attaching a hard drive to its USB port. You will have to subscribe to Sling’s separate DVR service to “record” its provided channels. As with every device, the AirTV is not perfect. You must use the Sling TV software, either the Sling TV app or the AirTV app, to have access to the tuners to watch TV. The HD Homerun devices don’t have that limitation. Once you initially set them up for over the air reception, the Homerun tuners can be accessed with by various other software to tune your locals. For example, on my nVidia Shield box, the Homerun tuners are be detected by the native Android TV channels app and incorporated into that service. The Homerun tuners are also seen and detected by both the Plex and Emby “Media Center” applications. BUT, with Homerun, Plex, or Emby, you must pay extra for local tv schedules. It you are using Air TV to combine locals with Sling channels, the schedule for the locals is included within the Sling TV software at no extra charge. Know what you need first before buying this product. I did my homework, that this AirTV turned out to be exactly what I was looking for. If your needs are the same or similar to mine, grab it!

    Great idea, poor execution

I thought I had finally found what I've been looking for--a reasonably priced solution for recording OTA TV shows. When I cut the cord several years ago, this is what I missed the most, especially the ability to record sporting events. I've been a loyal Sling TV customer for several years now, so when I heard about the AirTV's integration with Sling TV, I was pretty excited. Setting this up was easy, and after only a few minutes, I was connected to my home's wifi and ready to scan for channels. I've been using the Mohu Leaf antenna for a while now, and they really work well, so I anticipated it working well with the AirTV. Once I connected it, AirTV found all my local channels! The big thing I wanted to do was to be able to record shows, so I attached an external hard drive and started the setup. After about 30 minutes it was still formatting, so I disconnected it and reformatted it in my computer. I finally got AirTV to recognize it, only to tell me that it wasn't fast enough. I then attached a 64 SD card in a card reader, and this was successfully recognized. Finally, I was ready to go! Unfortunately, that's when the trouble started. There's a light on the AirTV indicating that it is receiving a signal. Mine would only stay on intermittently. Also, it started to report that my external storage was disconnected, then reconnected, without me doing anything. I tried multiple antennas in multiple places in my house, including the attic. No location produced a strong enough signal for the AirTV to work as advertised. What's interesting is that these same antennas, when connected to my TV, produce excellent HD images with no dropouts. This is what I use to watch TV every day. No matter what I tried, however, the AirTV would not consistently recognize the signal, and without a signal, this is just a paper weight. So, unfortunately, I'm going to have to return mine and hope that someone can solve this TV viewing use case at a reasonable price, without a subscription. As it is, AirTV is still not ready for prime time. The concept is fantastic, and I loved the integration with SlingTV for the few minutes that it worked. Maybe I'll try again with a future version.

I am sorry to hear that you had a poor experience using the device. While I understand that you tried different antennas and locations, it is possible that your television has an inbuilt amplifier which was boosting reception and improving picture quality when connected directly. Also, keep in mind that the way the device functions is by uploading your OTA content, and then downloading it to your streaming player.
If you still have the device, we would like to work with you to get it running properly. If you have time for a call, our customer support line is: 1-866-974-1354 (Mon-Fri: 7:30AM–10PM MT and Sat-Sun: 6AM–11PM MT).
We also work with professional installers which may be able to resolve the reception problems that you were seeing. If that sounds like something you would like to give a try, we have information about that at this link: https://www.airtv.net/antenna-installation/

    DO NOT BUY

This product sounded great and looked great since sling tv is our main way to watch tv. At first glance and instal we were very happy although it dose not support amazon we could live with that but after a few days it just changed from sling to Netflix while I was in the kitchen alone I thought it was weird and maybe the dog stepped on the remote. Unfortunately it was not the dog and this glitch never stopped after calling several times being told they were working on an update (they told me that every time I called) they also had me reset it which makes you have to resign into all your accounts (which blows btw) over and over. Finally they said they would send me a new unit but it would take a couple weeks for the exchange to happen and while I waited I would have to move my Roku from room to room like some sorta animal or not have tv in a room for the few weeks. The exchange took place and after a few weeks our new unit showed up and we got it hooked up and running unfortunately the problem started up again after a couple weeks but I just dealt with it until I was at my whits end. So I called again I said “enough was enough I just want my money back you can have this thing it doesn’t work and never has I know your working on an update but no update you’ve done has ever fixed the problem this has gone on for months I just want my money back” well air tv people said “no” it had been longer than 30 days but they have a new update coming and they hope it would fix the problem so here I am with an airtv unit that just cuts out in the middle of whatever I’m watching and goes to something I’m not do not buy and airtv.
