Rugged protection and it does look nice actually

I just bought this case today after buying the commuter case and getting totally frustrated. The commuter case comes with a screen protector kit where you wipe off your screen, then you put this sticker like protector on and then use a card to get out all the air bubbles. Sound good? Well, that was a real nightmare as it was hard to put the screen on correctly, it kept getting dusty, and it was really hard to get the cover on afterwards. So, I returned this and got the Defender series. I really just wanted something simple but got worried that the iPhone wouldn't be protected against falls (I have kids, and I have dropped phones before). The price is steep (though I've seen this listed for cheaper on eBay) but to me this was a pretty good investment. I plan to keep the phone a long time and I do let my kids use the phone to play games. What I like: I like that the screen protector is PART of the hard shell case. Those stick on protectors are a PAIN. I like that it really isn't so bulky. My husband has the Otter Box for an iPhone 4 and it is bulky and ugly. This one actually looks sleeker. The cream/blush is really pretty. I have a black iPhone (but I don't see how the phone color makes a difference when it is totally covered by the case). The hard shell is cream colored and the blush is for the rubber covering. The rubber covering has cut outs for all main openings. These close nicely. So, I feel like I not only got a real safe case, but I didn't compromise on attractiveness. This actually looks cool. What I don't like: I wish it weren't so expensive. There are so many cheap cases out there. However, you get what you pay for and OtterBox does have a cheaper covering which while being $10 less and without a holster (which I don't use) seems like it is in a different class. (Interesting note: The sales guy told me to get the OtterBox commuter because I didn't want to use a holster cover. I returned it anyway and just will not use the holster cover for the Defender one I did end up with at the end of today's shopping experience.) I've yet to see how difficult it may be to clean. However, if this is like the iPad case (which is also quite difficult to open once it is shut), there is a way to gently open it by using a pocket knife to gently push open each closing point (there are about 4, two on each side near the corners). Once you figure that out, it's really not difficult to open. And, its good that it isn't easy to open because you wouldn't want young kids to try to get it out... Hope this helps...

    Feels like rock solid protection

So I bought a new iPhone 5s and it was very light and slippery, and only a matter of time before it fell. I wanted something to provide rock solid protection. In general, Otter Box had very solid reviews. While I would have liked a water proof model, various reviews on those were not very good regarding call quality and, after all, what is a phone for if not making and receiving calls? Looking at the store display and talking with the very helpful smartphone sales folks at my local Best Buy, I opted for the Otter Box Defender series. Sure, you seem to be able to drive a tractor trailer over the top of the line model, but I am not an oil field worker in need of such protection. The Defender provides good solid inner case plastic protection with a tactile outer rubber case at a not totally ridiculous price for a bunch of plastic and rubber. The sales rep I spoke with sheepishly admitted to dropping his iPhone 4 in an Otter Box Defender from the second story and it survived with no apparent damage. Not a recommended testing procedure, I am sure. He was also up front on the downsides of the Defender: it is very difficult to install and remove, it is hard to keep lint out from under the front screen (which then necessitates removal and re-install). He then proceeded to demonstrate the difficulty by installing and removing the case at least 4 times before he felt he had gotten all the lint and dust off the inside of the screen. While he may have missed one piece on the edge of the screen, thankfully, I have not found lint and dust infiltration to be as big of a problem as he had suggested it would be, because it was a big chore even for an experienced person to remove and reinstall this case. On the other hand, that does speak to the security of the case. One item I have not seen in other reviews, is how the front screen plastic constantly looks like an oil spill! I was concerned about how the plastic might interfere with the touch screen functionality, but that has not been an issue. Fingerprints and oils from your skin are the big issue. I am constantly cleaning the screen. Even when clean, the petroleum chemicals in the plastic make it look like there is a constant oil slick on the screen, making it look dirty. Even people looking at the phone ask if something spilled on it, so it is not just my perception. One last item, which I am concerned may be related to the front screen, is that the phone is basically useless in sunlight - you can not see the screen. While I have not removed the case, due to the difficulty mentioned above, I will be doing so to see it I can then seen the phone screen in sunlight. This may be why the sales rep also mentioned that a lot of people remove the front screen and replace it with a Zagg screen protector. Food for thought, although I was less than impressed with the Zagg on my 3GS, and the price for that piece of sticky plastic is almost as much as the Otter Box Defender case itself! All in all, the Otter Box Defender appears to be providing the high level of protection I was looking for at a relatively reasonable price point (especially catching a sale) for a bunch of molded plastic and rubber. In the end result, it is cheap protection for an expensive phone.

It's not a bad product, that's not what I'm trying to say. What I am trying to say is there are some flaws that I *almost* want to consider fatal. (HAH! How's that for an on the fence answer?) Out of the box it is pretty nice, feels good, solid grip, nice interior, the buttons handle very well. The deep setting for the volume on off switch though is a little deep for my fingers and can be rough to click sometimes. Though the other buttons are really phenomenal. Assembly was pretty easy. At first to me it looked daunting, but the instructions really take the fear out of it. Once you assemble it once you forever can do it again. The home button and the camera's are the only two "big" holes where things can get back into the case. The home button being the biggest. It wont take long before your case is full of dust. When that happens disassembling the case is the only way I found to get it out. I have to do this about once every week or so. I got the case cause it was advertised as rugged and durable. Which I am happy to say it is. I have dropped it more times than I care to admit, and my buddy was tossing it back and forth jokingly (some friend right?) and dropped it rather hard. So I believe from my small experience it handles shock well. Though back to that fatal flaw... the dust... my goodness the dust! It gets under that screen and then you have a small piece of dirt or many that you're constantly trying to clean and can't. Because of that, I really wouldn't recommend the case to people in dirty environments. One thing I noticed about the case that I'm not sure is a good or a bad thing yet. It made the phone large. On one hand I freaked when it did that for I was excited about a thin light phone. This case made it big again... on the other it's much easier to grip, doesn't feel like it will break, and generally fits better against my ear. My pocket, not so much. (I like tight jeans... what can I say? Sexy and I know it?) No seriously though, it's a bit bulky. If they fixed the flaw of the dust I would recommend it in a heart beat, but because of that flaw I can't give it anything more than a fair. It's a fair product, it does well but compared to some of the others, the life case for example, I feel it falls just shy of them.

    Not Pleased With This Otterbox

Within 8 days after purchasing 2 new iPhone 5s and 2 new Otterboxes, a patch of what appeared to be moisture, collected in the upper left hand corner of one of the Otterboxes, between the protective screen and the face of the phone. We Made the cross town trip, once again, to take it back to Best Buy. A sales rep took the box apart and cleaned what he said was probably condensation from between the two surfaces. He said it was most likely caused by a tiny hole or tear in the Otterbox protective cover. He also said that if it happened again to bring it back for a replacement. Before that week was out, the same condensation, or whatever it was, happened again and once again we drove across town to return it for a replacement, as directed by the sales rep. A different rep this time told us there was nothing he or Best Buy could do and I could not have a replacement. He suggested that the splotch was not condensation, that it was either make-up or hand sanitizer that had come into contact with the phone inside my purse. I explained that I did not carry make-up or hand sanitizer in my purse. He was still no help in solving my problem. He did agree however, that it was not something one would expect to happen to an Otterbox.. The fact that my husband and I had purchased 2 iPhone 5s and 2 Otterboxes only 2 weeks earlier made no difference. In fact, in the past 2 years this made a total of 4 IPhones and Otterboxes we had purchased @ Best Buy. The rep was not rude, just not at all concerned about the problem I was having. I told him as we were leaving the store that my husband and I had made our last purchase at Best Buy, he replied very sweetly, "Okay---have a nice day." I was disappointed by that young rep, and even more disappointed by the failure of Best Buy to address my problem.

I'm still trying to decide how I feel about this case, but here are some of my first impressions: It's a gorgeous color combination and really adds to the overall look of the already-beautiful iPhone 5. The polycarbonate shell also seems more sturdy and of a higher quality than the Defender case for the iPhone 4S, and the silicon cover feels more like a "foam" than the silicon for the previous model, which I think is a good thing. I feel like I have a good grip when I'm holding the otherwise-fragile phone, but the case doesn't seem like it would stick to my pockets or anything. However, there are a few downsides: The openings for the front and rear cameras are a bit too "wide open" for my tastes and I'm worried about the aluminum getting scratched since part of it is exposed in the back camera opening. I just ordered a full body Zagg shield today and will be putting screen covers on the front and back of the phone for additional protection because the aluminum scratches so easily. There is also an air bubble between the screen protector and the iPhone glass, making the touchscreen not quite as responsive. It still works, but it's a bit more of a pain to type. Overall, I like this case. It offers decent protection and looks awesome, though I do think it's overpriced for what you get. However, unlike some other cases, you can rest assured that this case will NOT scratch your phone in any way during installation and removal.

Reliable otterbox protection a few design flaws

I had an otterbox for my iPhone 4 the design was bulky and the outer case was very pliable. The protection on the other hand was amazing. I dropped it many times (once from about 15') and it never damaged the phone. The outer case on the iPhone 5 is a lot better than the floppy silicone on it it's predecessor. My issues are with the design. Like all other iPhone 5 accessories that were released at the time of the phone release....well lets just say it all seems a little rushed. - The opening on the ear piece and camera lens has no protection at all. This would be fine if I could fit a zagg protector on the phone but the tolerances are too tight for that. - The flaps on the bottom for the headphone jack and lightning cable, open down and to the back of the phone. This may seem like no big deal but for use in the car, for say music (or any other function like apple maps) the case has to sit cockeyed unless you place it face down (which defeats the purpose for apple maps). I am a service technician that works with petroleum products and out of a vehicle. So It gets kind of annoying to have to buy an extra accessory to prop it up to not damage the bottom flaps overtime. Other than the above stated everything is tip-top. My last otterbox kept my iPhone at near unused condition. This one on the other hand, will look a little beat up around the mentioned areas. And unless I can figure something out, I will be stuck taking it apart weekly and cleaning all the junk from the week out of it. It does the job of keeping my phone in one piece. But to me it's the little things that make a product stand out. Otherwise it would have had 5 stars.

For the past 5 years or so, I've exclusively used Otterbox to protect my phones and iPods. I'm not much of a butterfingers, but occasionally I've dropped my gear and have never once felt concerned about potential damage, because Otterbox shells are so robust. Yes, they're a bit costly compared to other protection, but most other products are soft nylon or gel that acts more as a cushion than an absorber. I used this one on my iPhone 5s, and have dropped it at least a couple dozen times in 3 years, without an issue. Generally, all Otterboxes are made of 3 parts. Two hard shells (front and back), that you clasp together around your device (includes a scratch protective window on the front side), then there's the outer sleeve which is kind of like a hard yet flexible rubber, though I'm not sure of the material at the moment. Make sure your device, mainly the screen is quite clean from dust before you put the clasp and front back together. It's not to hard to take the Otterbox apart, but it can be a little tedious, especially if you have really short fingernails like me. Anytime I see anyone I know use their phone or other device without protection, I instinctively suggest they use Otterbox. Absolutely, unequivocally, unabashedly, these are the best.

SO, I love OTTERBOX, and I have seen a few friends with this case and thought it would be great. It's pretty straight forward when it protects the phone, but some of the basic functions are pretty difficult to achieve. I use my phone often, so the battery goes in and out almost like the sun is sure to come up and down. Unless you have pretty long fingernails (I am a piano player, so I don't) it can be difficult opening the protective piece that covers both the charger area as well as the headphone jack area. This goes for the side button as well (for muting the phone). Also, in my few weeks of owning this, I can see that those covers aren't going to be around for ever. Also, where the charger goes, there is a space that is slowly accumulating between where the front button is and the top end of the charger port. May not mean a lot, but I do like a tight fitting phone case. No telling when that will just start to go limp like an overused rubber band. A lot of apps require you to be able to reach the side of the phone, and the edges of the case don't make that easy. It's achievable, but if you got fingers that are bigger than a pen tip, you might find yourself going for that area a few times. I do enjoy the fact that it doesn't add too much bulk/weight to the phone while it's protected (have dropped the phone a few times getting gear out of the truck) so it fits in my front pocket with ease and I don't have to worry about buying a reinforced belt. It doesn't cover the natural speaker sound, and I haven't had any muffled sound issues while talking to anyone. Overall, I like the case. It fits in my hands and it's protecting the phone. There are a few flaws, but nothing that would make it (for me) a deal breaker.

This is my first "Otterbox case Defender" I gotta say this case is really made well (not sure why the other guy was having problems) but, based on my removal of the case experience Ive had no rips or tears. The outer rubber shell is really durable its thick great grip on the hands. The inner plastic shell is hard to remove takes time once its off you will notice theres a rear soft foam that protects the back of your iphone 5 which i really like. Also the built in screen protector is cool it doesnt watermark your screen whatsoever. iphone fits snug no extra movement whatsoever perfect fit and protection. I suggest you clean the iphone really good especially the screen and under the screen protector so there is no lint or unwanted debris when you do put the case on. I dont see any reason to keep taking off and on the case do it once leave it in there and forget it till you really need to take it off.

Positives: Very sturdy and durable "looking". Provides very snug fit for iPhone and have not had problems with dirt/dust particles, hair, etc getting in under clear plastic screen on front of phone which has always eventually been a problem sooner or later with previous cases. "Tabs/covers" that pull out to cover up and protect headphone jack, USB port to charge phone (both at bottom of phone) and tab that covers Do Not Disturb switch on side of phone all holding up much more than cases I have had in past. Seems like it will hold up and protect phone very well if dropped. Negatives: Although I still believe it will normally hold up and protect phone very well, I had the misfortune to have the 1 time out of 100 that it did not protect phone as well as it should have. Recently had phone in Otter box on belt in clip when it slid off belt while in bathroom and hit hard tile floor. After that phone would not come back on, reboot, etc and I wound up having to get new phone. Overall: Maybe the best case I have had for any phone I have had. Hoping that recent incident when phones slipped off of my belt was a problem with belt and not clip. Also hoping it breaking when it fell was just a fluke and it hit just hard enough in the right spot that caused the problem. Would strongly recommend this Otter box

Otters are known to be somewhat slippery little devils, and perhaps our hopes were cast just a wee bit too high when we selected this box to give to our daughter in celebration of her 9th birthday. While she (and apparently the otter) were quite fond of the color, the process of putting the otter into this box is somewhat confusing and non-intuitive. As I regard an otter, I count no fewer than six appendages that need to be accounted for. This otter box has only five openings - and the openings that are there don't seem to line up particularly well with the anatomy of the common otter. Regardless, with a bit of extra effort, our daughter was able to get her otter to conform to the confines of the otter box, though she received a few nasty nips in the process. To address the missing orifice, she had both the head and the tail extended through the large opening of the box. This works well. The legs filled out the remaining holes, however, due to the asymmetrical arrangement, the otter tends to turn sharply to the right in all attempts at walking. We thought maybe we had the device placed upside-down, so we flipped it over - and he just ended up veering off to the left. We flipped it back over again because we think it looks better this way... but now he's getting harassed by our pet turtle. I know, first world problems, right?!?!?

Let me be straight forward. I have NOT dropped my phone yet, as I'm too much of a chicken to try it. But should my phone drop sometime in the future, I feel like I have a pretty strong peace of mind that this case will hold up to the test and save my screen from cracking or my phone from breaking. Very little of the phone itself actually shows under the case, as the case itself is like a box that sort of holds and protects the phone from things like dings and scratches. The only parts of the phone itself that show besides the screen (which has a clear plastic layer covering it) is the home button, the speaker/camera area on the front, the camera on the back, and the apple logo on the back. All of these areas are not flush with the box. They're sunken in, which means the only way they'll get scratched is if something pokes at it specifically. This is not likely. I work in retail and I'm constantly banging my phone against counters and desks, my key ring swings around and hits it almost every time I walk. And yet you can't see a single mark on the case at all. It's texture has a grippy feel to it, which helps it not slip out of my hands. Overall it's a very good case and worth the money. If it does ever drop, I'll come back and update with whether or not any damage to the phone occurred.

Finally needed to replace my 4+ year old OtterBox that I purchased when I got my iphone5 which I had for 3 years. Then, I used it on my iPhone SE. It was still usable but felt that the rubber was getting thin from wear and the flap that covers the plug hole was ready to fall off. I checked Best Buy and it was on sale! Original price $49.99+tax, I paid $22 total! Love the belt clip, but have replaced it twice over the years. The case is somewhat different than the original. The phone cover is more plastic than rubber and the bottom of the phone is now exposed. The original had covered the bottom front with the inner plastic casing and the home button was covered with the rubber from the outer casing. I feel that the original OtterBox case offered more protection in a drop situation. But I must say that I’m liking the new case as it makes me feel like I have a new phone. I only trust OtterBox and make these types of purchases from Best Buy.

I have always used Otterbox cases plus a few others but this case is great. I have to say this new design they tried for the Iphone 5 is 10x better than the former case for the 4 and 4s, the silicone or rubber they use is way more durable, doesn't stretch over time and feels a lot better in the hand. I really can't find anything bad to say about this even when I try to think of them, maybe that dust manages to get under the protector BUT I've experienced this in every case. I will say the 2 best cases for an Iphone are the Otterbox Defender or the Ballistic case. Both are extremely durable and have dropped them many of time with no problems whatsoever with the cases or phone. You can get the insurance policy for 9.99 with a 200 deductable... or you can buy a 30-60 dollar case and not worry about any of that. It gets my 2 thumbs up.

I've had the Defender series on my iPhone 4, 4s and now the 5. This case will help protect your investment like no other case. I work in landscaping, my phone would not have survived had it not been for the otterbox defender series case, I mean come on this case is dust proof, crush proof, water resistant (not water proof, but they are working on the armor series case which is) and so much more. Some complain that the phone is too light, with this case it makes the phone feel perfect IMO. Getting the rubber case off the shell is a slight pain but its because its a perfect fit, no sliding around, and if you do happen to accidentally rip the rubber- otterbox will replace it for you. This is the BEST CASE PEROID well untill the armor series comes out :)

I don't know why I stuck with this horrid product for one year after purchasing my iPhone 5. OtterBox is selling garbage which will have you throwing money down a rat hole. The belt clip is beyond flimsy. I don't know who designed this belt clip and decided the matierials which would be used to for it, but shoddy does not begin to describe it. I have broken THREE belt clips. THREE! Yet I kept going back to it because I could not find another product which had a belt clip until recently. The case is so complicated it isn't worth the time and effort. Why do you need that many pieces to put together a protective case, and why does Otter Box insist on making it so hard to assemble and disassemble those pieces? The silicon is poor, and the plastic makes the screen very hard to access. And the covering still allows dirt and other particles to get trapped. Anyone who buys this product should be forced to wear a sign saying, "I am a fool who enjoys throwing away money". Otter Box, I am never buying another one of your products again as long as I live. The only reason I'm giving this product one star is because I can't give it any lower. If I could, it would receive a negative rating.

This case is pretty simple in how it completely protects your phone from top to bottom as opposed to many "sleeve" style cases that act as just a shell leaving the screen not too far from the case edge. This case is what I would call overboard in how it completely locks your case from the outside world. The case has a screen protector built in and a two part plastic locking shell and rubber sleeve. It encloses it and makes your phone look like a brick. This case is for those that want to be able to drop their phone and not feel any concern. This case does that. A final note on the included belt clip to hold the phone in. I personally don't find it useful as it was awkward taking the phone out of it. However, some working men or women may find it helpful. I would say though, that there is nothing fashionable about the clip and the case itself is for the security minded, not the style.

I purchased my iPhone 5S a couple of years ago and have no intention of replacing it until it needs to be replaced. I spent a good amount of money on LIFEPROOF case and was disappointed in it. Had a hard time getting the phone of off my belt when I used the clip. Actually ended up putting the phone (in the holder) in my pants pocket. The clip broke, and used just the case for almost a year or a little more. Decided it was time to purchase another case and had heard positive comments about the Otterbox. Definitely in the month or so that I have had this case, I like this a lot better. I wear the phone on my belt and less in my pocket these days. You can carry the phone facing outwards (nice when I do lay it on the desk, I can see who is calling me) and also have it so the back faces outward (which is nice when I am speaking to a group of students and do not want them to see the face of the phone when a text, tweet, or phone call comes in).

This is a great case! Nice and hard you can drop your phone on the ground and it will be safe. The price is good for the protection you get. The only problem I have with the case is it's hard to put on phone when you first open and take the case out of the package. When you open the package the take the case out you have take the plastic cover off the top of the case. To install you have to pull the outside rubber off the inner hard plastic. Then you have to break the top and bottom hard plastic apart. Then put your phone inside the top and bottom hard pieces. Lastly put the outer rubber back on the hard top and bottom pieces and your done. I didn't see instructions for putting on the case on your phone in the package contents. I had a Sprint store employee selling these cases to help me and i watched him put on case. You can check the case companies website for installing if you don't believe me.

I have used this case since I purchased the phone. It has already saved the phone from many simple drops and one or two really rough drops onto concrete. While it does add bulk to a fairly compact phone I do feel you get what you pay for, good protection. I do have my doubts about the durability of the little flaps that cover the charging and headphone ports as these get alot of use but even if these break off the drop protection would not be compromised. Even with the openings on the case for the camera, earpiece and speakers, the phone still stays fairly clean & scratch free. This case does not fully seal the phone from all dust & dirt but it does a fairly good job at this. Its weak point for dirt or water is at these openings or if you drop it face down onto a rock. I have only taken it out of the case once to clean behind the face cover and noted that the rest of the phone still looked as it did when I purchased it. If you want a fuly sealed case then look at the LifeProof case.

I would recommend this to a friend
