Nice product, but a serious flaw

I really wanted to like this item -- the case is solid and well constructed, and there are even silicone rubber tabs on the case which protect the phone's ports (e.g., headphone jack) against moisture. However, the belt-clip holster is a different matter, and -- in my opinion -- has a fatal design flaw: I agree with other reviewers that the phone is not adequately and securely locked into the holster. I stopped using this item when -- while quietly eating dinner in a restaurant, I heard a faint clatter, and looked down to see that my new Galaxy S8 had -- for no apparent reason -- popped out of the holster, landing on a hard floor. (Had I not been paying attention, I might have even missed this completely!) Having read other reviews, I was very worried about this possibility and had taken great care to ensure that my phone was "locked in" to the holster. The problem is that the phone is held into the holster at two corners, and a tiny "claw" or "teeth" fit into a small, shallow "groove" to lock the phone in place. (See photo.) Two tiny plastic teeth engaging into a plastic groove (only about 0.5mm deep) is the *only* thing preventing your expensive phone from popping out, and -- as I found out -- it apparently takes almost no provocation to eject the phone. I'm not willing to wager my $600 phone against this chance, and instead I switched to a Turtleback leather holster which completely encloses the phone.

I have always used outer box cases for my phones and have had great success. They are great products. Love their customer service as well. However, I must note that with this latest case for the note 8, they missed the bar a bit. The case itself feels like really good quality. Dropped my phone once already and it survived. It does add some bulk to the already big note 8, but feels solid and secure as always. I wish they would have made the edges a bit more protruded as to protect the screen more on the sides in case of it being dropped. I feel the screen is too exposed on the sides. I feel it needs to be more like the top edges. Also on the defender model the earphone and charging flaps are difficult to open and are in reverse position than how they are in the commuter series. I feel it was easier to open in the commuter series than the defender series. Also the flap opening makes our more difficult to charge in this position than how the commuter has it. Over all i like the way the commuter series fits/ feels more than the defender, but do enjoy the holster on this version. If you don't mind the bulk get this series, otherwise go with the commuter. The holster could also have a cut out for the camera. Many times i have taken my phone out while it's attached to the holster and wanted to take a picture. If it had an opening on the bank it would be great. Easily doable as there is room for that opening. I may do it myself and modify my holster. Lastly, i wish it did include the screen protector as the ones in the past have done. Now they sell it separately. Even if it cost a bit more. I don't like to know i have to buy more things. Doesn't feel complete to me. Also, the opening to the stylus is wide open. Feels as if the case may crack there if dropped on that corner. Again, the commuter series does s better job in that area as well. It adds a divider between the speaker and the stylus making it seem more durable. I think this may be a weak point in the defender series. So overall, great case, but could be a tad better in design.

Needed a new phone since my OnePlus was dying. The OnePlus was recommended by a family techie as being technologically advanced, but ended up having some inconvenient quirks such as difficulties in downloading files to computers. This time, I decided to go with a Samsung Galaxy to stick with a common, well supported product. Couldn't really see $800 or more for a bloomin' phone, so I decided to try used/refurbished. Saw plenty of places out on Amazon, but the reviews commonly included issues around not being fully unlocked, early failures, or poor visual condition. I decided to compromise by getting a refurb from a major company that I've done plenty of business with and who has a physical presence with people I could go yell at if necessary. Yes I paid more, but I wasn't willing to risk a great deal of hassle for the $50 difference or whatever. Ordered the S8 from Bestbuy.com, it came a day earlier than expected, and looked new. The tech at T-Mobile had no problem bringing it up on their network and transferring the vast majority of my stuff over, and now any problems I have are user issues rather than the phone's. I'm pleased with the phone, and am convinced it was worth a few more dollars to go with Best Buy. A perfect experience. Sorry I can't comment more on the S8 itself. It's a phone! Nice large display, a good size for me, and it makes calls, gets on the network, and everything else that one acquires a phone to do. :-)

Nice Rubberized Case. No Screen Protection

When I got my Galaxy S8, I also purchased the Defender case with the Otterbox AlphaGlass screen protector. Within days, the thick glass cover popped open the case (case is a two piece unit that snaps together), due to its thick material. The glass also made it almost impossible to "touch" activate things on all edges of the screen (top, bottom, and sides). I returned the Alpha Glass, but now I am worried the screen is unprotected. I have an OB case on my old HTC One smartphone, and that was near bulletproof, so I am hopeful this Defender will protect the Galaxy S8. I like that the top and bottom of the case are raised which keeps the S8 screen from making contact with a flat surface (a table for example). BUT, like all other S8 cases out right now, the sides leaves the screen exposed to contact if the phone were to hit the edge of the table. I am PRAYING OB will come out with a plastic overlay to adhere to the S8 screen, for protection. I do like the belt clip holder and the phone does fit into it with a distinct SNAP. It does take some effort to pull the phone out of the holder, so I am confident it will hold the phone tightly on my belt. The phone can be snapped into the holder with the screen facing out or in. Purely for the lack of a useable screen protector, I am rating this case a 3.

I have always purchased the Defender series cases for my phones because they have always been rock solid. This particular iteration is not quite on par compared to the level of protection offered in the past. Some of that stems from the design of the phone itself (with its curve-edged screen) and part of that comes from an attempt to not be quite as bulky (I guess enough people complained about about putting their super-sleek thin phone in a case that is three times its size). All-in-all, Otterbox did do a decent (but not perfect) job of a compromise solution, and it is still offers some of the best protection available for the S8. As you've already read a million times, there is no screen cover included. The curve of the screen's edges make the usual Otterbox screen cover less than useless, so this isn't too big of an issue (other than the fact that you are still paying the same price for less protection). The curve of the screen also led Otterbox to lower the rim around the edge of the phone. This is good, because it doesn't obscure the screen, but it is also bad because it leaves the screen just that much more exposed to possible impacts. The last thing that bears mentioning, and you may have already read this numerous times as well, is that the holster/belt-clip does not clamp onto the phone nearly as securely as it has in the past. I don't know if maybe they were trying to make it easier to remove the phone from the holster, but it comes out easily... way too easily. It is no surprise that I have read complaints about people's phones falling out of their holsters. This is a potential problem to be sure.

Let me start by saying that I have used otterbox defender cases for a very long time. I have ipad case, 3 iphone cases, and LG G4, Galaxy S6 and most recently my Galaxy S7 edge. So being an otterbox fanboy and being familiar with their unsurpassed quality I went ahead and bought a defender for my Galaxy S8. Saying that I was disappointing is an understatement. First of all otterbox did the same thing with the screen protector that apple did with the headphone jack, they dumped it. So now, I have a defender case without a screen protector, for the same price as I paid for my S7 edge case with screen protector. So I have to spend extra money for a screen protector. Second, the holster does not hold the phone (in the case) very well. My S7 edge holster held the case like an iron jaw, but the S8 holster holds the case very lightely and I am convinced that it will fall out when I walk.

    Phone protection with annoying features

Attention put your phone case on before you add screen protector so you can see where you need to start film or glass. This case moves ever so slightly and if you screen film is to close to an edge you will be annoyed at the bubbles it will cause. With that said onto the case. Rugged, grip, bounce, and bulky are a few words I would use to describe this case. It feels tough in your hand and the rubber outside gives you a secure feeling when holding it. It you drop it will bounce I dropped it from my jacked up pickup several times and no damage can be seen. Now the bulk. Good luck getting this sucker in a pocket with ease. The rubber outside grips onto everything so even a pair of gym shorts may require some extra effort. The size also makes it not ideal for front pockets on jeans and since the risk of sitting on your phone is a factor it's the main place your going to end up keeping it. I also ended up cutting off the rubber flaps that covers the aux plug and power connector. I understand They are meant to keep.out moisture and dirty but the phone is already water resistant. They are really annoying to try and plug in charger while driving or for anytime for that matter. Over all good case but I went and spent half the price on a different brand that starts with a "S" and ends with an "n" which feels just as rugged but with a slimmer profile.

Best protection you can buy, but stretches

I've been buying Otter-box defenders since they first came out. I get a new phone yearly, and each year this is the case I go for. I have tried others both more expensive (life-proof) and a lot of cheaper. They all do well, but nothing compares to the Otter-box. The issue I have is the outside layer (rubber) will stretch. At first I thought it was because I would take my phone out of case sometimes, and then put it back in. But my last phone, S7 edge, I never took out, and only had it for 6 months. And the rubber becomes really loose, the corners don't stay in and tight with the hard plastic inside layer, the back becomes very loose with a large gap between outside rubber layer and inside plastic layer, especially around the camera, and lets dirt and everything inside. Doesn't hurt the phone, but looks bad. And it gets bad enough where the rubber layer peels off the phone when you pull the phone out of your pocket. Otter-box will (on your dime around $7) ship you a replacement rubber layer, takes 4-6 weeks. Which is nice, but a hassle, and takes over a month. This has been an issue since their first cases, and every case in between (about 6 years). And even with this issue, I still buy, would recommend, and will continue using.

Otterbox has been a standard in rugged cases for years. This has enough rubber to be grippy and absorb impacts better than many newer "off brand" knock offs. Otterbox is no longer the only quality case on the market but they still make a better product than most of their competitors, and when it's on sale the price is often the same. This iteration does not have a built in screen protector, and that is probably fine. I am one of the people who removed the screen protector from Otterbox Defender cases because they suck compared to glass or even most plastic stand alone covers. The case is as thin as it can be and still offer protection. I wouldn't mind if the sides were raised a bit to offer protection for the screen face, but that would limit screen edge functionality. The holster is not super on this defender case, it seems too easy to for the phone to pop out and I don't trust it. Buy I rarely used the holster anyway. I paid a little more than twenty bucks for this case which is a great deal. Full retail is too much and I wouldn't pay more than thirty for it.

I have been a supporter of Otter Box defender since my Galaxy 4. the outside case cover was perfect. nonskid substantial and seriouly protective the belt clip was tight and held my phone in place thourgh the most difficult work, the clip would break before the phone fell out. My phone lasted for years with no and I mean no damage. BUT most of that protection seems to be gone. The new defender is a far cry from it's protective predessors. my phone often falls out of it;s clip for no reason. A nice person at the airport had to track me down one week after I bought it, I didn't even know it had fallen out again the new non skid is a far cry from the old one, True it didn't break so I'M thankful for that protection but I don't have confidence that my phone will be there which requires that I carry it or constantly check to make sure it hasn't fallen out again. If I set it down in the car it may slide onto onto the floor in no time. There are alot of phone cases that provide protection for alot less cost but I sure miss my old defender. a once loyal otter box customer

      Hey there Amen,

We're terribly sorry that an unusually loose belt clip caused such a mishap at the airport! It is strange that your belt clip refuses to hold the device, since typically the clip securely latches into the sides of the Defender case for on-the-go protection! Our awesome Otters would very much like to hook you up with a warranty replacement, so please feel free to give them a quick call at 1-855-688-7269. They'll send you a brand new holster that we're confident that should deliver on the OtterBox quality that you're used to!

This is my second Otter Box. I have used the first with my Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx for four years without any issues. Otter Box has made several nice improvements in this iteration. This is a well-engineered product. I use this case for recreational (cycling) activities to guard against phone damage from road accidents, i.e., crashes and falls. It’s very easy to insert and remove the S8. The case features dedicated insert/remove tabs which minimizes finger strain. This is much appreciated given that I only use this case for recreation and insert/remove my phone several times a week. The flexible ‘rubber’ outer guard keeps out dirt, grime, and liquids while providing responsive access to the S8 buttons. Strangely enough, the case provides pretty good access to the ‘edges’ as well. And finally, the feature that closes the deal for me is the non-contact protective screen cover. On a minor note, I appreciate the non-destructive packaging. The packaging/box is a nice option for storing the case when not in use.

I work in construction and have bumped, banged, and dropped my S8 in this case into everything from concrete to puddles- a time or two 8-10ft off a ladder. Never have I had an issue. The rubber on my case may not be unscathed, but it's still in good shape and the plastic is like new. My phone however, aside from a little dust that manages to sneak in, is like new even after 6 months of torture on jobsites and everyday use. I will be adding a screen protector shortly as that is the only part of my device I feel prone to damage- either a scratch or direct impact to the screen face. I've had an OtterBox on a few phones in the the past, but after getting water or dust/dirt behind the built-in, I have come to prefer the case without and to add my own directly to the screen. Also, I use my case with a vent mounted magnetic phone holder in my truck without issue. I taped the metal piece inside the rubber on the back.

First off would like to say, I love how slim the case is to the phone. Past Defender cases were so overly bulky I felt like I was holding a brick in my hand. Overall I feel very comfortable that the edges of the phone and back are protected. However very poor decision to not encase the entire phone and cover the screen. Due to this you can hardly call this case a "Defender". While we all know the S8 is water resistant, I think all would be more comfortable to add totally encased protection when going places like the beach or pool with their phone. I have had the case for a little over a month now, and the screen of the phone has actually stood up well. However I have to constantly take the phone out of the case and clean is as since the front and rear are not totally closed, dirt and debris gets in between it and needs to be wiped off before it causes scratches. Overall it is pretty disappointing and am switching to a Ghostek Nautical case for my S8 in hops of having full protection.

First off, the case texture is like spongy rubber, so if it fell it would have some give which will help absorb shock and hopefully prevent breakage. The Galaxy S8 is such a slick phone that the tackiness of the rubber helps keep it from slipping off surfaces and helps it stand up for viewing. It says it has a kickstand on it for watching videos etc., but that is only on the back of the case. See, it is two pieces, one piece clips on your belt (and the kickstand is the clip) and the other piece is the protective case that surrounds the phone; that is what fits into the belt clip case. The piece surrounding the phone is very snug and tight fitting. It's easy to plug in your power cord and it doesn't muffle the speaker at all. It takes a bit of pressure to turn on the phone, but the buttons are protected by the case. Overall a very good case.

I put one on my phone and it does cover it with a couple layers of protection and would cover the edges of the phone very well. The one flaw this protector has is that it's too thick to be used if you plan to use Samsung Pay or even Android Pay. I've been using Samsung Pay for a couple years with my old phone (S7) with a thinner case and when I moved to S8 I wanted to get stronger protection but I used the phone with this protector at three separate stores that I've gone to before and with this protector I kept getting error messages when using Samsung Pay. I switched to another otterbox cover that was slightly thinner and my Samsung Pay does work. If you do not use Samsung Pay/Android Pay this cover will be good. If you plan to use either one then skip this case as you'll have problems using it with this cover.

I have used the Otterbox Defender for several phones over the last few years, and I have always been very happy with the protection given by the product. The newest version (Aug 2017) for a Samsung Galaxy S8 was much slimmer in design than previous versions I have had. I was concerned that it wouldn't provide the same protection but in many ways, it still does. As others have stated, it no longer comes with a separate glass protection layer, so I bought something else for that. It has sturdy flaps that cover the holes for the power cord and earphones. I have had some people state that they couldn't hear me very well when I have my phone on speaker phone, but I am not sure whether it is the phone, the case, or the connection. I am somewhat klutzy, and feel confident that the OtterBox Defender will do a great job of protecting my phone.

I've used OtterBox in the past and always think their cases offer great protection. However, two things have led me to pursue a product return. 1. Port covers. I know the wireless charging is a great feature on the s8, but it does nothing for Android Auto which requires you to plug your phone into the car's USB port. The charging port cover quickly became a hindrance everytime I stepped into my car. I probably could have cut the port off, but then I'd worry more about the durability of the silicone piece. 2. Durability. I've had OtterBox cases in the past and every single one had the silicone cover stretch out. This is an inevitable occurance and it's just a matter of when it will happen. If neither of these two things bother you, it's a great case otherwise.

Yes, I spent a lot of money for my phone and want the best protection. I feel like the Otterbox gives me that. The Defender is nice cause of the belt hook separate part. I can use it to just hook the phone, turn it around for extra protection. And it will hook to my pants, phone anywhere. I don't use the connection to my pants often since as a girl, I have a couple of curves in my waist area and the Samsung GS8 is a little large. Hooked to my purse gives me extra security. The color is great. I had bought the blue which is also nice, but decided I like the pink. I have dropped my phone a couple of times, but a hard fall on concrete yet. So far so good. If you want protection. This case is the one.

We gave a Galaxy S8 to our son for Christmas and purchased the Otterbox Defender case for it. We use the same cases on our own phones and have had good luck with them, so did the same for the gift phone. Read the description carefully, this case does NOT include any type of screen protection. We have found that it works well with our screen protectors (not thick glass ones). I'm not hard on my phone, but I do bump it around from time to time and have had no issues with the Otterbox case. It is decent looking (mine is black, my wife's is purple, it slides in and out of my pocket easily while still adding security to the grip. (The S8, while good looking, is almost slippery without a case.) I would (and did) buy again.

Read the reviews on the Otter Box and like other reviewers, was disappointed that it does not have an all enclosed case as had been available for prior Samsung Galaxy phones. However, I can see how the curved screen on the Samsung S8 prohibits the ability to provide a screen cover that would be effective. Taking that into consideration, the Otter Box Defender provides a solid, reinforced back and sides which aren't found on other cases. The reinforced sides also allow the belt clip holder to catch in the notch built into the Otter Box side so that the clip catches the case, not the side edge of the screen as was apparent on other brands with belt clips. Highly recommend the Otter Box Defender for the Samsung Galaxy S8.
