Traditional Watch Users Rejoice
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Oura 4 Ring is perfect for my situation. As someone who bought a nice, self-winding mechanical watch for myself, using a smart watch or wrist-worn fitness tracker is something that just wasn’t going to happen…no matter how informative it could be for a variety of health-related parameters. The Oura 4 solves that dilemma elegantly and conveniently. Clark Howard, the consumer advocate who used to be on the radio and now has a daily podcast to go along with his web site, has been vocally enthusiastic about his Oura ring for as long as I can remember. And as someone who admires what he does and his commitment to improving the lives of others, I was excited when the offer to review a new model of Oura ring was made available to me. The Oura 4 Ring is designed to monitor and give you insights into Sleep and Rest, Wellness and Longevity, Activity and Fitness, Heart Health, Women’s Health, and Stress. I found the longer I wore the Oura ring, the more information it collected from me, and there was more feedback on more topics which I received via the app on my phone. I have seen mention of the large number of biometrics that the Oura 4 can track (Oura claims “over 20” on their web site), but I have been unable to find a comprehensive list of what exactly is tracked - and that could be for good reason when it comes to competition in the marketplace for this type of product. And speaking of tracked, I could not find any evidence in my phone that the Oura App was tracking my location. I received a new iPhone literally on the same day my Oura 4 Ring arrived (my old phone was three years old). So, I had an accelerated learning curve with new-to-me technology. I will say that the Oura ring caused me no set-up or connection issues with the iPhone 16 running the latest OS. I wish I could say the same regarding some other devices in my life. The Oura App provides you with a wealth of information that at first can seem daunting. It does take awhile to digest all the data that is being collected and how it is being presented to you, and I am still working on that part of the experience. That being said, it just goes to show that the Oura 4 Ring is a serious tool that has wide reaching use for monitoring the body and provides guidance for a properly motivated individual to make any number of positive changes to their lifestyle. To make changes, one has to know what to change, how to change, and most importantly be able to monitor the effects of those changes. If you can’t easily see changes, you are likely to lose interest in continuing to try to make those changes. Even though I am someone who doesn’t have a regular workout routine, I have more than a passing interest in the pedometer function on my phone. But I don’t always have my phone on me during my daily activities for a variety of reasons - usually because I don’t want to inflict damage to the phone, or having it in my pocket is inconvenient or uncomfortable. Having that functionality built into a ring, now THAT is convenient. Same thing with monitoring my sleep. I’ll be the first to admit I have poor sleep habits which seem to have become worse once being retired and having no regular routine I have to follow. The Oura ring provides me with the necessary monitoring and feedback, and notifications to subtly prod me into better habits. Reviewing the daily data, I am pleasantly surprised as to the depth of detail and the accuracy of it. While Oura makes mention that their rings are not medical devices and should not be used to diagnose, treat, or monitor specific heart problems, I am looking forward to being able to have a heart rate monitor on my body virtually all the time to alert me to episodes of A-fib that I am being treated for. The cardiologist I work with has had positive things to say about certain smart watches and their ability to track cardiac issues, so I am looking forward to hear his take on fitness rings and their place in this area. The Oura 4 Ring is designed to be worn no matter what you are doing. The Oura App also syncs with numerous other health and fitness apps so you don’t have to give up using monitors you maybe already be familiar and comfortable with. The ring is made of titanium on both the outer surface that gets exposed to the ravages of everyday living and on the non-allergenic inner surface that spends its time in contact with your skin. I found the Oura 4 to be no less comfortable than a traditionally sized wedding band. Battery life during my somewhat short introduction to the Oura 4 has been what the manufacturer claims and the same with recharging time. The app prompts you to recharge your ring overnight when the battery life gets down to about 20 percent, but since tracking my sleep is one of my priorities, I usually charge it during the day when I am performing a low-exertion activity. The app alerts me when the ring is fully charged and the time it takes is relatively short. I have seen mention made that other fitness rings come with a charging case so you can conveniently recharge the ring when traveling. Considering the week-plus that the Oura lasts between charges, I think this would affect only a small fraction of potential users. One thing I found interesting was that the ring sizing kit that Oura sells (with a credit upon purchasing the ring at most retailers) is that it states the ring can be worn on any finger of either hand for monitoring purposes. When I looked at the information on Oura’s web site about their leadership team, I noticed that in the pictures provided, just about everyone listed wore the ring on their index finger. I have a nagging feeling that there is a reason for this and I maybe would have thought twice about choosing my ring finger since that is what I am most comfortable with. Maybe I will change when I have to replace this ring - it is a piece of technology after all with a limited life due to the built-in battery. I still have a lot to learn about what is tracked and the personalized guidance that the Oura App can make when it comes to my health and wellbeing. Considering the number of smart watches I see, if I were Oura I would concentrate on the market consisting of watch enthusiasts who gravitate towards mechanical watches. The idea of a fitness ring is a no-brainer for those of us wishing for this type of monitoring but are reluctant to give up our beloved timepieces. Oura, I love the execution you have made on this product and of the usefulness it possesses.

Beware of gold ring durability!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As much as I love the Oura ring, (this is my second ring) am very unhappy with my gen 4 gold ring I have had 7 months. Oura 4 features improvements in several key areas
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I recently upgraded from the Oura ring 3 to the Oura ring 4. Physically, the two rings look somewhat similar, although the Oura ring 4 is slightly thinner and lighter in weight. The more dramatic and immediately noticeable changes are the new color and design of the charging base/cable and the elimination of the three raised sensor indentations that were inside the Oura ring 3. I included a side by side photo of both ring interiors showing the indentions on the 3. I opted for the matte finish “stealth” option with the Oura 4. My Oura 3 was polished silver which, although really nice looking initially, started to accumulate noticeable tiny scratches and nicks scratches after a while. I wear the ring 24x7 and don’t typically baby it. Therefore, I’m not completely surprised it has several nicks, especially with that style finish. The blemishes aren’t obvious and are only visible up close. They also don’t affect usability or reliability of the ring at all. I’m hopeful the matte finish of the Oura 4 is more resilient to similar small scratches, even if only for aesthetic purposes. Both the Oura ring 4 and 3 are comfortable to wear and unobtrusive in most instances. As I did when ordering the Oura 3, I first measured my ring size using the Oura sizing kit and wore the sizer for 24 hours to account for slight swelling and changes in the finger size throughout the day. The nominal purchase price of the Oura sizing kit can be applied as a credit towards the price of the ring with many merchants. The Oura ring tracks sleep, readiness, activity, and vitals in several key areas. I don’t know how long the data is officially retained on Oura’s servers, but my historical data is still available back to when I first began wearing the Oura 3 in early 2023. Sleep tracking has always been my favorite feature of any tracker, and the Oura ring has been helpful for me with improving my overall sleep quality. It tracks timing, latency (time to fall asleep), sleep stages, and overall effectiveness. This allows me to identify and address areas where I’m having the most trouble falling or staying asleep. Oura breaks down the REM, light, and deep sleep stages individually. It also tracks heart rate/heart rate variance, body temperature, blood oxygen levels, sleep interruptions and disturbances. The app will offer sleep improvement suggestions based on the above measured biometric data. For example, it will suggest avoiding certain activities or practices before bedtime if the heart rate is elevated throughout the sleep cycle. Oura also tracks daily readiness, which it determines based on several individually tracked biometrics. It can reveal whether my body is recovered and ready for a productive day, or still tired, recovering and best to take it easy. It also tracks stress levels and stages throughout the day, activity, heart rate, cardiovascular age, and resiliency. The newly updated Oura app is easier and more intuitive to navigate. The most frequently accessed features have been moved prominently to the top of the main screen for more convenient access. The app allows users to generate time interval based reports that can be shared with health professionals or wellness experts. It even has social rings for keeping up with friends and family. Stats are sync’d to my phone every morning when I open the Oura app. One of the only shortcomings with both rings is that the app must be open and running to sync data. There is no passive sync. Also, the ring must be near the smart device to sync. The Oura 4 ring and updated app do however seem to sync much faster than the Oura 3 and prior app version. I’ve used Oura extensively in both iOS and Android. The app works reliably well on both operating systems and their respective devices. The Oura four makes a few operational improvements on how data is measured. One improvement that I am relieved was finally implemented is with activity tracking. On the Oura three, I had to manually trigger recording of exercise and physical activity. If I took a walk or jog, I had to first manually start tracking the activity in the Oura app. Doesn’t seem too bad in theory but there were numerous occasions where I performed workouts that weren’t recorded as such and were instead treated as regular steps. Like smartwatches, Oura can now sense the start of physical activity and it begins logging automatically. The ring still lags behind more powerfully equipped and GPS enabled smartwatches and smartphones when it comes to more advanced fitness tracking and workout metrics, but it’s good enough for basic activity tracking. Oura would not be my first choice or recommendation as a workout companion for highly active people. It’s much better suited as a passive biometric measuring device with basic workout tracking. Oura ring membership is not mandatory, but realistically it is required to experience the full benefit if the ring. In addition to health tracking, it offers other wellness features, like guides and exercises for meditation, sleep, stress relief and more. Whether or not membership is worth the monthly cost honestly depends on each specific individual. I am personally enjoying the Oura 4 to date. It seems slightly faster, more reliable, and feels lighter and even less noticeable on my finger than my Oura 3. Nothing is perfect and Oura has always had a few shortcomings compared to a smartwatch or dedicated fitness tracker. However, what it lacks in advanced fitness tracking features it more than makes up for in form factor and ease and comfort of 24x7 nonstop wear. Lastly, the battery life of the Oura ring is typically 2-3 times that of a typical smartwatch and it fully recharges quicker. I usually get a week of wear between charges and the ring typically recharges within an hour or so. The first week right out of the box, the ring charge lasted eight days before indicating it needed a recharge at 25%.

The Apex of Health Tracking
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Oura Ring Gen 4 is truly a remarkable feat of engineering. It looks like a normal ring, no one has been able to tell that I’m wearing a smart ring. But anybody could make one with crummy sensors inside, a bad app, a bad finish, etc. Oura is different though. The accuracy is incredible, I’m finding little difference between actual medical measuring devices and the ring's data. If you are wanting to be more in touch with your body and health, this is the device to get. The app is thorough and extensive. In fact, I’m still finding data points it tracks and reading about what each means. The explanations of measurements and how to adjust your life accordingly are very helpful and in-depth. If you don’t know how certain measurements work, you will learn through this app. The fact that some of the more complicated measurements can take up to a month or two to establish a baseline feels trustworthy. They aren’t going to start giving you bunk data without establishing a trustworthy baseline. I think what held me back from previous Oura rings was that they highly suggested you wear it on your pointer finger. This time around with the Gen 4, you can put it on any finger! So I used it to replace my wedding ring and it’s like nothing every changed. Other than taking it off for a couple hours once a week to charge it. But it charges so fast and lasts so long that it really is a non-invasive piece of tech in your life. Overall, I absolutely LOVE this ring. My quibbles are small and few. My fingers have boney knuckles which usually requires a slightly larger ring, usually a half size, but unfortunately there are no half sizes. The ring is a little snug, but that is ideal for best measurement. Android also says that the app is a resource hog, but I haven’t noticed a big battery difference. I think the biggest problem is having to pay a subscription, but this is a high end device so I guess that should be expected. I highly recommend getting one, and when you do, make sure to use the sizing kit first to make sure you order the right size! Pros: Can wear on any finger now! 6-7 day battery life Very accurate measurements Explanations of the measurements Completely normal looking ring now Rose gold is a perfect color Cons: Can be hard to understand what to do with this data No half sizes, which is a struggle for my knobby fingers Android says the app is resource hog Would love haptics for notifications so I could ditch my smart watch Subscription required for a lot of features

Sleeker, Improved Sensors and Better Fit!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Oura Ring 4 is the fourth generation of this compact health and activity data monitoring product. It supersedes the Oura Ring 3 which has been available since 2015. The new Ring 4 is an improved, slimmer version with more sizes for a better fit, better sensors and longer battery life. Oura Health was founded in 2013 and is based in Oula, Finland. Oura Health has become the foremost developer of wearable personal health data monitoring devices. It created its first Oura Ring in 2015 which has evolved to a new generation (Ring 2 in 2018, Ring 3 in 2021 and now Ring 4) every three years. The Oura Ring collects a variety of biometric readings more frequently than competitive devices and integrates that data in a well-designed app which provides advice on maximizing health and fitness. More than 2.5 million Oura Rings have been sold to date. Here are the key features of the new Oura Ring 4: • Oura Health Ring Generation 4 (Model JZ90-54220-12) • All titanium ring construction, six surface finishes: Gold, Rose Gold, Silver, Brushed Silver, Black, Stealth (dark grey) • Available in 12 sizes (#4 - #15), free (after credit) sizing kit available • Oura App provides extensive data analysis and advice to optimize health and sleep • Sensors integrate with app to monitor: Sleep quality, sleep apnea, heart rate, heart rate variability (HVR), temperature, blood oxygen, cardio capacity, cardiovascular age, stress, activity, resilience, menstrual cycle, body clock • Recessed Sensors: Red/IFR LED (Blood oxygen), Green/IFR PPG (Heart rate, variability, respiration), Digital temperature (Body temperature, variability), Accelerometer (Movement, activity) – more than twenty biometrics continually monitored • Smart sensing algorithm adapts to skin structure, tone and activity, optimizes battery life • 18 signal pathways improve accuracy and continuous reading capability of sensors • Memory capacity: One week of activity and sensor readings • Automatic firmware update via Oura App • Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity, 30+ foot range, EMF-safe, airplane mode available • Lithium polymer battery 15mAH (#6)-22mAH (#13) provides 8 day life, full recharge in 90 minutes, daily recharge in 15-20 minutes • Waterproof to 328 foot depth • Operating temperature range: 14 degree F – 129 degree F • 5 VDC wireless charging dock and 38” USB-C to USB-C recharge cable included • Dimensions: 7.9 mm Width, 2.9 mm Thickness, 20 mm (#4) – 29 mm (#15) Diameter • Weight: 0.2 ounce (ring), 2.3 ounces with charger and cable • Made in Estonia • One year warranty on parts and labor Setup: When you open the Oura Ring 4 box you will find a QR code to download the Oura app. This is the essential element to analyze and manage the data generated by the ring. To set this up, just enter your email address. Then you are given a link to Oura website. At the Oura website, create a unique password and you are given a code which allows you to register the ring, connect the ring via Bluetooth and update the firmware. Then enter your personal details (country, age, weight, height, sex) to enable the Oura app to properly interpret the biometric data generated from the ring. If you are an iPhone owner, the Oura app will connect to Apple Health to integrate and access the data stored there. A brief questionnaire will help the Oura app to focus on your health and fitness goals. While you are doing the setup, unpack the Oura Ring and set up the charger. (By the way, the charger is sized to match the ring size, so it is not interchangeable with rings of other sizes.) Place the ring on the charger to top off its battery. When fully charged, the white charger LED changes to green. If a ring’s battery is fully depleted it will take up to two hours to recharge. The battery life is substantial and should last eight days without recharging. I found that the battery drain is about 15% per day. By placing the ring on the charger each day while I was in the shower (15-20 minutes) the battery was restored to full power. Once the Oura Ring is fully charged, put it on your finger and rotate the ring so that the indentation is on the palm side of your finger. The ring should fit snugly and there should be no significant gaps between the ring and your skin. You may find that you can also wear the ring on other fingers. I found that sensitivity was very good and the ring generated accurate data even when on a finger slightly different in size than the finger for which you selected the Oura Ring size. The Oura Ring 4 has several advantages over its predecessor – it is thinner, lighter and the sensors are all recessed so it is more comfortable to wear. Plus it has more sizes so it will provide a better fit. It is also more durable since it is all titanium with a decorative surface finish. If you engage in activities which may scratch that finish (e.g., working out with weights) you can buy inexpensive silicone covers for the ring to protect it. Use: If you own an Apple Watch or other fitness watch you are conditioned to glance at the watch to read various data while exercising (heart rate, pace, calories burned, distance, steps, etc.) The Oura Ring has no display, so you must access the Oura app to see the data being generated. The only display is a red or green glow which indicate when your biometric measures are below (red) or above (green) normal. The Bluetooth Low Energy wireless connectivity provided a solid signal up to 50 feet from my phone and was very stable in all conditions. However, even if you do not have your phone with you, the Oura Ring will store data internally for up to eight days of use. When you bring the phone back into proximity it will synchronize and download all stored data. The key to effective use of the Oura Ring 4 is to allow it to build a solid baseline of your biometric data. This takes about two to three weeks of continuous use. During this learning period the Oura app becomes better and better at assessing your health condition. It uses this assessment to give you advice on the activity each day which will optimize your health, fitness and sleep. The app is also excellent at giving you a quick summary of your current condition (Readiness, Sleep, Activity, Heart Rate, Stress) – much better than the Apple Health app. Is it accurate? Both independent and Oura-sponsored research have confirmed that the Oura sensors provide data as accurately as specialized medical equipment. The Oura app works well to integrate and track all of this data so you trust its conclusions. Since I have worn an Apple Watch for five years and use it to track my exercise activities I was curious if the Oura Ring 4 would be a substitute, supplement or irrelevant for Apple Watch users. First, it is obviously not a substitute since it cannot offer any data readout by glancing at it during a run or bike ride. But does it offer enough additional value to justify it as a supplementary device? The answer depends upon your willingness to follow its AI-inspired daily advice and your general health condition. There are three categories of users who will certainly benefit. First, the truly committed health enthusiasts who seek every bit of data on their condition. Next, those with specific health issues who need to monitor those conditions. Finally, those who want to continuously monitor their health but don’t want to wear an Apple Watch when sleeping or in social settings where wearing the Watch is inappropriate (e.g., a formal event.) However, in all cases, keep in mind that the Oura Ring 4 is part of a system which includes a near-mandatory subscription to Oura Membership ($6/month or $70/year) in order to access all of the analysis and advice available in the app. I wish that Oura would simply offer a lifetime membership as part of the purchase price. Bottom line? The Oura Ring 4 is a marvel of compact, effective technology. The Oura app is superb and nearly all users will gain great utility from its data analysis. I love the product but have some qualms about the need to maintain membership for $70/year so I am giving the Oura Ring 4 just four stars. I recommend it, but only to those who recognize that ongoing cash commitment. But aside from that if you purchase the Oura Ring 4 I think you will be delighted with its subtle elegance in appearance which hides its awesome technologic power.

The best fitness ring
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Oura 4 is hands down the best fitness ring available. It looks great (I got the stealth color) and so far I've found it to be super durable. I'm amazed at the technology Oura has been able to pack into such a tiny package. The ring is hardly bigger than the average wedding band, yet it senses heart rate and heart rate variability, blood oxygen levels, temperature, and it has an accelerometer to track movement, including steps and movement while you sleep. And somehow they figured out how to pack into it a battery the lasts for 8 days. Speaking of sleep, sleep tracking is my favorite feature. I don't sleep well, so knowing what's going on with my body is important for developing a sleep plan that optimizes efficiency. I've used watches to track my sleep in the past, and always suspected they weren't very accurate. The watch would indicate I was getting 8 hours of sleep, but somehow I still felt tired. I compared my watch with the Oura Ring 4 and while the watch was saying 8 hours of sleep, the Oura 4 was saying 6.5 hours, showing me an accurate picture of when I actually got to sleep, and how long I stayed there, as well as giving me ideas on what I can do to sleep better, with reminders to take specified steps. And most importantly for me, it showed me when my O2 levels dropped off. I have mild sleep apnea, so keeping an eye on that is important for heart health. I honestly can't say enough positives about the Oura 4. The ring is gorgeous and functional. The app is really good, as well, breaking down all data for you and putting the information in an easy-to-read format. I'm pretty sure I haven't even touched the surface of what can be learned from the app, but I'm getting there. I highly recommend the Oura 4, whether you're a fitness guru, or you just want to understand your body better.
