A Thrilling Twist on the Zombie Apocalypse

Owned for 2 months when reviewed.

Here’s the thing about Overlord: I saw the trailer so many times I felt like I knew the movie back to front before I even walked in. It was one of those things where I’d notice something different or pick up on something new every time I saw the trailer to the point that when I realized the actual feature was opening this weekend it wasn’t that I didn’t necessarily care to see it, but I definitely felt indifferent about buying a ticket to a movie I didn’t expect to gain anything more from that I hadn’t already been conditioned to expect from the trailer. I tell this aspect of the story to lend a little perspective on why Overlord then ultimately came to be something of a pleasant surprise. In expecting a certain level of craft, care, and creativity I low-balled my expectations and was more than happy to find out I was wrong when the film kicked off and immediately kicked into high gear with a level of energy that was infectious. Stranger even, the opening of the film is the same scene that opens the trailer, but while there is the expectation of this being a full feature rather than a short preview there is also something to the altered pacing, musical accompaniment, and/or character dynamics that immediately plays into the level of investment one is willing to give no matter how much they think they know. This is a long way of getting around to saying that, despite the initial indifference through which it had to battle, Overlord is a movie that does very well at what it's built to do. It’s not an exceptional film that says something new or even anything terribly interesting about life or the psychology each of us project on its meaning, but as a movie that sets out to combine the terror of war with the terror of a zombie apocalypse and roll those into a somewhat hackneyed, but fully aware camp fest-Overlord accomplishes everything it could hope to and then some.

    Excellent Dolby Atmos Sound

    |
    Posted .

Overlord's Dolby Atmos soundtrack can be summarized in a single word: bonkers. The track is a delight of sonic mayhem, stage expansion and extension, potent bass, and intensely and insanely fun full-stage saturation. Every action scene is a delight, cranking up the sonic mayhem and making full use of every speaker in the configuration, including the subwoofer, to paint a chaotic picture of wartime insanity. Right from the outset on the plane full of paratroopers, the track struts its stuff, which includes engine hum and interior rattle and eventually features bullets ripping through the plane's bottom half, explosions popping all around the aircraft, screaming men, all variety of wartime chaos that the track introduces and executes with startling precision, placement, and clarity. Such holds true for every shootout throughout the film and particularly in the film's climactic action scene. Every inch of the stage is filled with perfectly defined and carefully placed sound details that instantly and fully draw the listener into the battles and environments, where every shot, scream, crash, bang, and bullet slam find their proper, harmoniously balanced place. Overhead speakers are mostly folded in rather than discretely used, though some loudspeaker announcements do offer some nice and obviously positioned overhead usage. "Reserved" is not in this track's vocabulary, though lighter support effects do help better define various scenes when the action isn't front-and-center. Musical clarity and stage saturation are terrific and dialogue is clear and detailed from its natural front-center position. This is a reference quality track from start to finish.

The opening scenes of the aerial assault behind enemy lines was absolutely demo worthy for any serious home theater setup. Running a 7.2.4 had my entire home pressurized. The journey behind enemy lines amid secret horrific human experiments was an enjoyable ride. It was a gripping horror movie and included several really effective jump scares along the way. Color and contrast we’re eye catching and the 4K detail - wow! Catch it on sale and enjoy

    Underrated movie with great sound

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this movie. I went in not knowing anything and it was very entertaining. It is sort of a inglourious b******* meets frankenstein. There are a few jump scares in there as well. Now for the A/v quality. So this is why I bought the movie. The Dolby vision on this is fantastic. It is a dark movie but the blacks were rich and colors popped during bright scenes. Especially in chapter one when they are on the airplane. Sound is A1. The atmos will really put your system to work and I would say this is reference quality. Lots of nice overheads from planes flying over, bombs going off and bullets flying everywhere. For $8, this was an awesome pickup and highly recommend if you can get this on sale. Heck even if it wasn't, it's a great movie.

One of my favorite recent movies. I've seen this movie so many times over streaming services and I always get really excited like if it's the first time. I have read some bad reviews about this movie and I realized that most people refer to it as "A Bad Zombie Movie" or "Another Zombie Flick", personally I don't think this movie was intended to be another Z movie at all, since the "Zombies" are basically man/monsters results of experiments to create a super army to kill/defeat their enemies, Zombies kills to feed. It starts out with a lot of action and then goes into character and plot development, more action and then the beast/monsters surprise, a typical J.J. Abrams movie. In my opinion this is a war flick with a dark touch. It's awesome, I got this 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray edition at a great price on Black Friday and the visual and sound quality is super amazing! I'll watch it over and over again!!!

    Actually a very good movie.

I went into this movie with tempered expectations. However, left genuinely impressed. The story itself is rather straight forward; nothing too complex. That's okay for a movie like this. If you don't mind the blood/gore and occasional tension, then you'll have no problem watching this. Where this movie REALLY shines however, is in its A/V department. The 4K UHD disc provides exceptional video clarity and detail. Colors pop out when they need too, nice rich blacks that aren't washed out. Video - 5/5. Audio - is on an entirely different world. The LFE especially is particularly chest pounding and deep. Atmos and surround effects are detailed and well balanced with voice/dialogue crystal clear and easy to understand. I highly, highly recommend this movie.

The film has both historical meaning and value, coupled with a touch of horror, as the antagonists in the film seek to develop their own version of the superman. It is well acted, well reviewed, and is totally engaging. I highly recommend it.

A great, under appreciated horror gem

Overload for me was a rare treat. A movie that I enjoyed from the opening frames of the classic Paramount logo all the way until the enjoyable ending. While the movie was sold in some markets as a Zombie movie, Overlord has much more in common with the core plot of the Wolfenstein video games. It is still a horror movie but it is more of a mix of science fiction and supernatural than most Zombie movies are. If you are looking for horror movie that takes chances and tries some different things you will likely enjoy Overlord. I have seen a view reviewers rate Overload poorly due to historical inaccuracies that exist in the film. While I understand the frustration I have a hard time marking down a horror film for being historically inaccurate when one of the core plot threads of the film is fighting undead super soldiers which I am pretty sure is also historically inaccurate. :)

    Underrated action/horror film

Really enjoyed this movie. There aren't many action/horror movies, especially horror films that are set around WW2, so this one stands out. Worth a one-time watch, if not a purchase.

    Good Movie, Could Be Better

The movie looks amazing visually and the opening scene is very intense and pulls you in to the story. However, after that initial scene, I felt like the movie was missing something. This is not to say that the movie became bad after the first scene, but the beginning set a higher expectation for the rest of the film. I found the characters likeable and the story unique. I hope to see a sequel where they can maybe carry the same intensity and emotion from that initial scene throughout most of the movie. About the actual physical product itself, the case came broken in a weird spot and it won't close properly, this is not that much of an issue because it came with a slip cover. It is worth pointing out that these cases are a bit cheap, but this is a problem with all 4k Blu Ray cases and not an isolated issue with this movie.

Didn’t know much about this but got it on sale since I was looking for some options to try out my new 4K TV and player. I was very pleasantly surprised by this movie - great combo of war & horror genres. Dolby Atmos soundtrack was awesome - great base demo. Picture was very dark for 90% of the movie - clarity was good but it looked like the Dolby Vision was crushing the blacks (but that could have been somewhat due to my settings). Overall a great buy if you can get it cheap!

I was hoping for the movie this became while watching. I felt some fear of jump scares that never really showed. I love a great high tension movie that keeps my attention while not relying on those cheap scares and referring to itself as horror. This movie had elements of horror, drama, and possibly unintentional humor. I have watched this 3 times and writing this review makes this movie ripe for another viewing.

I'm not saying this is exactly the plot of Wolfenstein, but it's not too far off. It's done well, not like a made-for-TV movie or a bad netflix show. Actors are good (stars Finn from Star Wars fame), I like how it slowly gets weirder and weirder. If you like the WW II / zombie genre, it's worth a watch.

I recently purchased a New Samsung Q90T 65" (2020) Q-LED TV and matching Q950T Samsung Soundbar and 4K UHD Blu-ray Player and wanted to purchase a few really good 4K UHD Movies to show off the picture and ATMOS surround audio. This DVD does not disappoint. Great movie with plenty of action scenes with very good Surround sound. And I got it on sale! Better than going to the Movies, especially now since COVID-19.
