Nearly perfect gaming speaker

Panasonic has released a great new product for gamers that don't need a huge entertainment system for audio. The package comes with the Soundslayer speaker, AC power cord/block attachment, remote control, and instruction manual. Panasonic offers a 1-year limited warranty for the speaker.
PROS:
-----------
* Unlike smaller bluetooth/3.5mm portable audio devices, this one is wired via HDMI/fiber. Has a much better sound than using analog connections or bluetooth.
* Perfect size for gamers that play in a confined area (ie. dorm room, bedroom) where loud and massive audio is not ideal.
* Easy setup, plug-and-play design
* Deep immersive gaming sounds when playing PS4/PS5. Most sounds you hear with headphones are still heard with this speaker.
* The remote control offers multi-functions that are easy to use. Remote is light but solid.
* Since this speaker has both HDMI and Digital (fiber) audio, you can technically have 2 different wired sources connect in addition to wireless bluetooth.
* I did not experience any kind of lag/delay in audio/video sync.
* It has 4K passthrough with multiple audio formats that it can handle including Dolby Atmos and DTS-X.
CONS:
-----------
* The biggest con is that a digital display is not provided. This is a very simple addition that would have really put this speaker at the top of its game. Instead, you have to know the light sequences in order to know what happens. There isn't much for the lights to do, but a digital readout would still be way more convenient than lights flashing left/right, or a specific number of times.
* Many gamers play 2 different platforms (PS5/Xbox/PC/PS4) or at least USE 2 of these. Since there is only 1 HDMI in/out, you may need to buy a separate HDMI switch if you want multiple inputs to the speaker. IE. My son in college uses this speaker for both his PC and PS5. We bought a separate HDMI switch to accommodate this setup. Having 1 more HDMI input would be good at this price point. You can see the small HDMI switch we use in one of my pictures (2 input, 1 output).
OTHER OBSERVATIONS:
-----------------------
* This speaker is clearly not for deep immersive MUSIC. It has bass, but only to a limited extent. It really is more for gaming/TV sounds rather than music. Even though it does have Bluetooth (BT), music would sound better on most other BT wireless speakers. Deep bass sounds sound more like a thud than a boom. But given the size of the bass driver, that should be expected.
* If you lose your remote, you still have some functionality with the Power/Volume/Input buttons on the right side of the unit. Don't lose the remote or you'll lose a bit of functionality.
* Keep in mind that when you plug in the speaker to another source that has its own volume controls, you'll want to set the volume to the source and the speaker itself in a way in which you can adjust the volume of the other so it's convenient for you. (ie. If you want to control the speaker via PC, turn up the speaker all the way and use the PC volume controls to raise volume up and down).
* The power cord is proprietary with a power block in the middle (not USB-C).
CONCLUSION:
=====================
This gaming speaker is very simplistic in nature. It's not complicated. It's plug and play, has some good features including having quick bass control and surround 3D sound via the remote. It's perfect for college student (dorm room) or a gamer at home that may not want a ton of bass thumping the entire house. Clarity of voices is crystal clear, and sheer volume is plenty. This is a great substitution for not using headphones as the 3D sound is very good. The biggest flaw is the sequence of the lights and not having a digital display of some sort. You need the instructions to know what the lights are telling you which is a nuisance during initial setup. But once you know what the lights do, it's not too bad; however, IMO, it's enough to get a star knocked off the final rating. A good user interface is worth a lot.

The Soundslayer is a fairly compact soundbar that fits on your tabletop. I gave it a go initially with my Xbox Series X and I was able to passthrough 4K HDR content without any issues. Played some solo, online and streamed some video content, regardless what I threw at it I was pleased with the sound, plus the volume that this compact soundbar can push out. Having it in a TV setup, my one complaint would be changing the volume, you can see the lights flashing from left to right or right to left depending on if you are turning the volume up or down, but there isn't really anyway to tell what your current volume level is.
The built in subwoofer works fairly well, which has four levels and you can tell where you are with the flashing lights. I will typically use the soundbar in Music, Cinema or Game depending on the content I am playing. I do like that Game does have 3 different settings, one for RPG, another for FPS and the last enhances voices. There is a sequence to the lights on front, that's explained in the manual, to let you know which setting you are currently in. There is also a Clear Dialog button.
Didn't spend a lot of time in bluetooth, but it's nice to know you can easily pair your phone or other bluetooth devices to output audio. I pretty much only used this for music while working on my PC.
This is a great soundbar if you are looking for great sound, but are limited on space. A LCD screen to show information would be great, just a mini one to display basic information such as volume level would be great. Also for the price it would be nice to see an optical audio cable or an HDMI included in the box to help get you setup quicker. I had to take a 18gbps cable from another room to get this up and running. Not deal breakers, just would be nice, wouldn't stop me from suggesting this sound system to anyone with limited space looking to get an enjoyable gaming experience!

We moved into our house nearly 10 years ago. Ever since then, I’ve found myself rearranging the furniture and electronics every couple of months. I finally got it into a layout that is both comforting and practical for my needs. One of the things that I really like about the room is that I have it divided up into sections. One section has a place for me to shoot photos, another has a place for me to work on my computer, and the third area is designated for gaming. I have an Xbox Series X that I typically use for my gaming activities. Right now, it’s just plugged into my TV, which has decent speakers, but I’ve been wanting something that offers a bit more power. The problem I have is that space is at a premium in my office so I didn’t want a full multi-speaker surround sound set-up. So, I turned to soundbars. Since one of the main reasons I want better sound is for gaming, I selected the Soundslayer since it’s specifically designed for that purpose.
The first thing I noticed about the Soundslayer is its size. It is very compact - measuring only 17 inches long. One of the pictures I included shows the speaker sitting on top of an Xbox One X just to demonstrate the size difference. Since I was trying to take up as little space as possible, the smaller size of the speaker is a big plus for me. I do have to admit though, a speaker of this size starts to look puny next to a 65-inch television. I have my TV mounted to a wall in my office and I was hoping to be able to use a soundbar mount so that the speaker could live directly beneath the TV on a mount of its own. Unfortunately, the Soundslayer isn't compatible with wall mounting. The mount I had could hold it as a shelf, but since I didn’t have a good way to secure the speaker - due to the absence of mounting holes - I opted to just set the speaker on the TV stand. Because I try to keep that area as clutter-free as possible and this change-up caused me to router wires differently and rearrange the top of my TV stand to accommodate the speaker, I have to take points away for the design of this speaker and its lack of mounting options.
To test the sound quality out, I plugged my Xbox into the soundbar using HDMI and played a few rounds of Red Dead Redemption 2. While I was playing, I would swap back and forth between the different sound modes. I started with GAME mode and was really blown away by the crisp sound quality I got from the soundbar. Since I’m used to simply using the TV's speakers, there were a lot of sounds that I could now hear because they were being enhanced by the soundbar’s features. It was very impressive. While I was still on GAME mode, I switched on the 3D surround sound effect. I didn’t exactly feel as though I was surrounded by sound, but I could tell that the 'effect' was present as it moved between the speakers in the soundbar. There was a discernible difference between GAME and STANDARD mode though. While the quality of the sound was still good, it just wasn’t as well-defined or as deep sounding as the GAME mode. STANDARD mode still beat out the TV speakers. CINEMA and MUSIC were very similar in my opinion. Since I was testing all of these out by playing a game, I know I might be missing some nuances that might be present when I watch a movie or listen to music.
While the sound quality and build are nice, there are a few things I don't like. First, there aren't enough inputs for my use. In fact, there aren’t enough inputs for my fiancé’s use either - and she only has an Xbox and an Apple TV. There are one HDMI input and one HDMI output. So, aside from using the optical cable or the Bluetooth connection, you can only have one device running through the soundbar. Second, there are no cables other than the power cable included. There isn’t even an optical cable included and most soundbars I’ve seen have at least included that. Third, the display is non-existent. Panasonic has done a nice job providing notifications through a series of LEDs on the soundbar, which is nice because you know that the button you’ve pressed on the remote has been received by the soundbar. But, it would be great to be able to see a volume level or a reminder about which mode you are actually on. While most of these are minor annoyances, they did affect my user experience and so I wanted to note them here.
This tiny soundbar does pack quite a punch in the sound department. It is easy to set-up and produces a high-quality sound. For its price, I would just like to see some sort of attention paid to the little details that would really make this a great speaker.

Next Level Sound for Gaming

If you want more out of your gaming, then experience the Panasonic Sound Slayer with Dolby Atmos including HDR 4K UHD pass through. The Sound Slayer is a 2.1 setup in a 3 way speaker array. The built in subwoofer (16cm) tweeter (1.4cm) and mid (4cm) all work together to pull out loud, clear and amazing sounds within a small unit that can easily be placed in tiny areas where space is a premium. With built in Bluetooth, Dolby Atmos, DTS X and DTS Virtual X this gaming Soundbar will surround you with sound. There are multiple ways to connect to your favorite game, movie and music. Bluetooth is available, the HDMI ARC (Auto Return Channel) for 4k HDMI pass through to your entertainment and lastly the Optical cable option.
For me the optical cable was the way to go. It was so simple. Take an Optical cable from the out on the TV to the in on the Soundbar. Bam! You are now hooked up to use the Panasonic Sound Slayer how ever you choose. Bluetooth is another way to set up your Soundbar for music. Typically a flashing blue light indicates the Soundbar is trying to pair up with a smart phone, computer or other Bluetooth device. Once paired the blue light is solid. This is how most Soundbars hook up to Bluetooth and the Sound Slayer is no exception. Lastly are the HDMI cables you will need to transfer sound from your TV to your Soundbar. Make sure the cables are high speed HDMI so the setup can handle 4K with the Soundbar.
I enjoyed the 3 modes on the Soundbar for specific sound: #1 RPG (Role Playing Game) using the Soundbar for more precise sounding action. #2 FPS (First Person Shooter) This setting provides sound from many sides and even behind you. Now, when gaming and an opponent is behind you in the game, the sound will also be behind you with the Sound Slayer. #3 (Clearer speech), a better sense of clear dialogue, gives speech a great deal more of the power. Vocals are clear and easy to understand.
The most important feature, in my opinion, is the Dolby Atmos embedded in the Panasonic Sound Slayer. This is by far a great tech improvement for Soundbars everywhere. Sounds come from the top and bounce off the ceiling and walls creating a unique experience. It sounds very realistic to my ears. I have the Sound Slayer hooked up to the HDTV via the Optical cable. The sounds from the Sound Slayer really do reflect off the environment it is placed in. To get the true sound of innovation from the Sound Slayer, small to medium size rooms will give you the best bang.
A uniquely shaped, easy-to-use Remote, helps you select the sound mode, mute, 3D surround, volume, subwoofer intensity and Bluetooth pairing. Its shape helps not to mistake it for other remotes. I know I have 5 remotes so this is a small but helpful feature. The Input button lets you select between the different inputs like, Bluetooth, Optical cable and high speed HDMI.
The information book that explains how the features give way to the benefits is actually very helpful. Blinking blue, orange, and green lights tell you that tell you what stage you are in with the Sound Slayer. It takes a little while to get used to, but like anything else, the lights and buttons will become familiar. I had no trouble switching back and forth between modes and soundscapes with all the Dolby options available. There are also controls on the right side of the Sound Slayer if you prefer or if you lose the remote. It is a nice option to have, just in case.
Overall the Panasonic Sound Slayer 2.1 is a great addition to your entertainment system. If you find individual amps receivers or speakers are too expensive or something you don’t want to mess with, the Panasonic Sound Slayer might be the way for you. It gets really loud but with a full sound that will fill small and medium size rooms with music, gaming or movies. The Dolby Atmos is another great reason this Sound Slayer is worth a look.

Perfect Soundbar for Gamers!

The Panasonic Soundslayer is a the best soundbar I've used in years! Not only is it a PC gamers dream, it works in pretty much every room you can think of. I was immediately impressed with its size and sheer performance. You can use this as a home theater in your living room or on your desk to maximize immersion and get the audio advantage of a traditional headset. The soundslayer features 3 main game sound modes and can also be connected via Bluetooth with incredible listening quality. Setup was simple and can connect a couple of ways to fit your needs, whether it's hdmi or optical. The design is sleek and fits beautifully just about anywhere you place it. I have mine under my monitor and it takes up barely any space, this is a huge plus. The remote is pretty standard, nothing too crazy about it but it does it's job. I mainly play fps games so the 2nd game mode that boosts 3d surround is my default setting. The quality here is absolutely top notch and I really feel like I can hear every detail from footsteps to the ambience in a map. Awareness is key and this soundbar makes you feel like you have an advantage over others with just subpar tv speakers. The other 2 modes also work great in their respective areas. And if you're not really a gamer and want something to complement your living room and enhance your listening experience, the Soundslayer will certainly get the job done as well. This product is a great addition for anyone who's ready to step up their audio game! Panasonic has created a master class soundbar in a convenient little box. If your willing to dish out the cash, you'll be making a great choice.

Very Crisp Sound in Perfect Sync with Video
|
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
The Soundslayer had very crisp sound, incuding lots of bass; and stayed in sync with either games or YouTube videos as to video and sound. Often, cheaper units have a delay with the singer-video and the audio and with this device this never occurred. Of course with gaming this is a ‘must’ feature – so highest marks here.
I did pair a gaming laptop and desktop as well as a cell phone with the Soundslayer. All machines eventually paired, but in every case it took a few cycles of moving Bluetooth off and on to finally see the Soundslayer in the list of items to pair; so this was a minor annoyance.
I also used HDMI cables to connect the Soundslayer. Whether Bluetooth or cabled, the speaker performed excellent.
The sound was terrific and really enhanced game playing, I never heard my motorsports game so precise where you could hear all the different sounds coming from the small speakers. This unit is relatively heavy and this heft attests to the power of the speakers inside. I didn’t hear a lot of difference between the 4 sound modes, but there were better highs in game mode per my ears.
I’ve attached a photo to show how nice the unit fits under this 32” monitor which is a big plus so that it is basically out of the way when playing games or listening to music. Movies were wonderful to hear with such clarity in the sound. I played some classical music and it was far better with this unit than with other various speakers I tried.
I do highly recommend this unit, it is worth the extra cost to get a unit that obviously is more than just speakers since the engineers have built in the electronics to create a better game environment. Great.

Good…but pricey

The Soundslayer delivers when it comes to crisp clear sound in a small package. With a slim two inch height and flat profile, it fits under a flat screen with outboard feet or is the perfect surface for a monitor or all-in-one. The Sound is crisp and bright and won’t disappoint unless you’re looking for bass. Though it has a small 3.1 inch subwoofer built in, it just can’t deliver the bass a separate sub gives you. When gaming, the 3D surround sound feature quickly became my favorite. You definitely notice a difference in the sound. It has Bluetooth built in so you can stream music to it, unfortunately it’s only Bluetooth 2.1. In 2021 and at this price I’m kinda surprised not to see 5.0.
At this price point the lack of a sub is really a head scratcher, if it was $100 cheaper, I could overall look it. The older Bluetooth protocol is also a let down. The Soundslayer is really a 3.5 star product to me because the lack of these two features and the price. If you don’t need the bass and if the latest Bluetooth protocol is not that important, then I think you’ll be happy. It has good sound and doesn’t take up much room .

Impressive sound, compact form factor for gamers

The Panasonic SoundSlayer 2.1 soundbar is clearly marketed towards gamers with limited space and it does a GREAT job of replacing TV speakers or PC speakers for all kinds of gaming rigs.
First impressions are the soundbar is extremely compact in width. It is deeper than expected but you don't really see that as much. Its really impressive how compact this soundbar is.
Another impressive feature is this soundbar does 4K passthru which is a really high end feature for most soundbars or even AV receivers. It also supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X even though its not a huge benefit on a 2.1 system.
Some notes that people should be aware of:
1) on the PC, if you want to use the Dolby Atmos feature from the Windows App store, you may not get Atmos to enable unless you are using a passthrough destination that conforms to standard TV resolutions. This is more of an HDCP/HDMI issue, so for example, your source TV resolution may need to be 1920x1080p or 3840x2140p. Other resolutions and high refresh rates like 2560x1440p may not enable Dolby Atmos in Windows.
2) If your primary passthrough device is enabled, for example HDMI1 which goes from device (XBox/PS4) to TV and then passes Audio back via HDMI Arc on HDMI2, as long as the HDMI1 device is active, you will need to use the remote to switch to the input that the ARC sound device is coming from on HDMI 2-4.
Overall, this is a great compact soundbar solution with some very high-end connectivity options. The ability to use HDMI 4K/Dolby Atmos passthrough gives you one input back and still supports HDMI ARC perfectly on the other TV inputs. I won't use this in my family room but it will be in the master bedroom where we also play a lot of console games.
The name and marketing is a little bit aggressive but it lives up to the moniker "Sound Slayer"!!!

Amazing sound in such a small package

When I 1st got my hands on the package, I thought to myself "Soundslayer?, but the box is small".....I was put in my place fast. Inside the box you'll find the soundbar, power cord and brick, remote and literally "Basic Instructions". I highly recommend scanning the QR code and download the full manual as it's ~24 pages long that lets you take advantage of its full potential.
Hooking up the bar couldn't be any simpler. You have 3 options, HDMI, Bluetooth and Optical. I use the HDMI option and love that it has 4K HDR passthrough. It even works with 3D if you still use it. Supports many formats of Dolby, Atmos, DTS, DTS X etc. There are 4 sound "modes" - Standard, Music, Cinema and Game. Within Game mode, there are 3 more options - Game 1, 2 and 3. 1 is for RPGs, 2 is for FPS and 3 enhances voice.
It could be a little frustrating at first to get used to figuring out what mode or sound options you are using because there is no screen to let you know. There are instead 4 LEDs and you must know which combination of blinking leds mean what (why I HIGHLY recommend DLing the full manual, it gives you all options).
Using it for my PC sounded great. Even though it does not have it's own separate sub, it does have one built it. Sound is LOUD and Crisp. No distortions at all. Bass was good and had some oomph to it. Also used this as a bar for my TV and hooked up my console to it. Size was perfect for my 40" 4K tv to fit right under it. The footprint is small and can fit almost anywhere. It even fills up not only my game room but also my living room. For the size, it is about the size of a regular keyboard (you can see my K95 in the background next to it).
I also paired my phone with it via Bluetooth and all music and podcasts sounded wonderful. Also a note in case you were wondering, I ran my PS5 to the bar via HDMI and then hooked it up to my TV's HDMI ARC input. There was no audio/video syncing issues at all. Perfectly in sync. In a rare chance you might want to adjust it, you can with the bar, though it is hard to navigate to it.
I highly would recommend this surprisingly awesome sound bar to anyone in the market for great sound, small footprint, portability and build quality.

A Nice Little Sound Boost
|
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
The Panasonic - Soundslayer 2.1 soundbar is a nice upgrade for any means of gaming. It has the versatility to connect to your gaming console or PC via HDMI passthrough. There is also the option of using an optical connection or even Bluetooth. The optical connectivity would be optimal if you have multiple systems connected to your monitor or TV. The controls are fairly simple and you can adjust things using the control or the buttons on the side.
Generally speaking, the SoundSlayer soundbar provides excellent sound for as small as it is. Since it is just over 2” tall, it can easily squeeze into tight areas to stay out of the way. Case in point, I was able to slide it right under my 55” TV so it could be used to enhance the sound of our Switch. It fit in nicely and didn’t look out of place at all. As for connecting to my PC, it’s a little bulkier and stands out more than my 2 speaker setup. It’s not awful, but at just over 5” deep and 17” long, it takes up more real estate than I care to see.
Returning to the sound quality, it can really fill a room. You have the ability to make some sound adjustments to get exactly what you want too. There are Standard, Movie, Game, and Cinema setting options to match what you are watching or playing. There is also a subwoofer toggle to pump in as much bass as you desire. I found that they all perform well.
With all that being said, it’s not all glitter and gold. As many have stated, the HDMI passthrough results in a “blinking” of the screen when turning it on and off. It’s just an annoying thing to witness even though it is over quickly. The other thing is the LEDs on the front. I would prefer a better display to know what setting you are in because it’s going to take some time to get used to the LED placement and coloring to know what mode I am in. Also, those LEDs are constantly on so you are getting that added light when you are in a darker setting. That is certainly not ideal. Lastly, I am going to nitpick about the price point and not including at least one cable for connectivity is crazy.
All in all, the Panasonic - Soundslayer 2.1 can give your entertainment area a nice little boost without taking up a ton of space. It can certainly give you that better sound for your gaming needs or even your TV/movie watching.
