I tried using a sony x700 and was not happy with the picture quality or stability. So I switched it out for this one and what a difference. Picture is superb, the hdr optimizer feature is amazing. Prior HDR content that was too bright or too dark is now just right. 4k Bluray playback to my projector is fantastic. Upscaling 1080p to 4k video is also very good. In fact the upscaling is so good I want to use it for network playback. The unit does have a media player for dlna, but that is the only thing I'm having trouble with. My first usage was wonderful, but later when I came back and tried the same movie, the audio was very quiet and not usable. I contacted panasonic and they suggested a factory reset which I will do tonight. To be fair I had not bought the unit for this feature but it would be nice if it were reliable because this upscaler is really good.

Haven't had it long, but if I was using it to watch Netflix, Prime, HULU, Disney+, etc it would have gotten returned immediately. Be aware that your app choices are EXTREMELY LIMITED. There are about 3 normal, popular apps available and that's it. No Disney+, no Prime if I remember correctly, no Apple TV, etc. So if you're using it strictly for a 4K / Blu-Ray player like I am then you're golden--it's a great little player. But it you're looking for something that also gives you access to apps and streaming services you need to look elsewhere. My Samsung that this is replacing has access to any app you want, and this one literally let you download Netflix, HULU and Youtube and that's it--everything else that you might actually want is unavailable. There are, however, a bunch of obscure and foreign apps available--but that is pointless. All the major streaming services should be available at a minimum. But still a great 4k / Blu-Ray player for the money if that's what you're using it for only.

Picture is amazing. Remote small and unlighted but well labeled. Simple graphics but easy to understand. HDR implementation is excellent, much better than my old discontinued Samsung
Hello there! Thank you for sharing your experience! We’re happy to hear you’re enjoying the 4K performance and Dolby Vision quality, glad it’s delivering the viewing experience you were hoping for! - S

New to Blu-ray, I like the small size the most

It has HDR 10+. But what I like about it is its one of the smallest players on the market, even smaller than the X700. And the bonus, unlike the X700, it doesn't have a giant brick of a power supply. It's just a standard 2 prong cord. It's pretty quiet, does seem to get warm on the right side, even when turned off it stays a bit warm which is odd. I have two of these, both do the same thing. One new, the other open box. I agree with the other reviewer that gave it 4 stars for having a dated user interface from the 90s. And the remote isn't a Smart remote, i.e. bluetooth with less buttons. But the unit pairs well with my Samsung QLED tv so I just use the Samsung remote. I haven't noticed any delay when starting up, but then again I'm use to Panasonic's older DVD recorder units which were dirt slow. For the money, I think this is the best HDR 10+ unit on the market based on my research. Some people want a counter display but you can get that info by using the remote or even the TV remote. The smart features to me are moot. It has Netflix, but I think most people will have either a smart tv, Apple TV or something smarter. I used Netflix on it once and after an hour it crashed. I won't be using that feature so not a deal breaker. That was firmware 1.60. There's nothing super advance about this unit other than the Blu-ray playback. Of course it doesn't have Dolby Vision, but then again Samsung doesn't do DV so that's not something I'd use. One word of warning, if you buy an Open Box item online that is in Excellent condition, i.e. no scratches, you may end up getting one in fair condition like I did. BB credited me a measly 8% which was disappointing to say the least. Pay the extra money and get a non-open one. It gets 4 stars just because the interface is dated and lacks DV.
Dear customer, thank you for your valuable feedback. We appreciate your opinion and we will consider it in order to offer a more satisfactory service.

The Panasonic DVD/Blu-Ray player is really a great product.
It's easy to use with the remote, you can do everything you want to do with just this nice size remote. The picture and sound are excellent with anything I've used, and so small and slender in size, you can stash this unit anywhere you might like.
Hey, and thank you for your wonderful review! We're thrilled to hear that the Blu-Ray player is easy to use with the remote and that you're enjoying the excellent picture and sound quality. We also love how light and compact it is while still delivering top-notch picture quality and solid connectivity! It really makes for a smooth viewing experience. We hope this product continues to serve you well, and we truly appreciate your positive feedback! -C

Fantastic player that offers more value than UB820

Ub420 is as good as UB820, minus Dolby Vision.
I watched 4k blu rays discs of Interstellar, Top-Gun (both parts), Lawrence of Arabia & Dunkirk and was so blown away by the quality, it felt like I was watching those movies for the first time. Seriously, the sound was mind blowing and that was only with just a soundbar (Bose 600). If you have Sonos or Bose or Sony soundbar, that is more than enough.
The HDR and HDR environments are awesome options to have. The issue with recent movies is they are getting darker and darker. Atleast with 4k discs, I have the option to change HDR environments on this player and make it look brighter without impacting image quality or moving far from Director’s vision. So, in a way, Dolby vision doesn’t make much difference - atleast for majority of the audience.
Also, ub420 is physically smaller than ub820 and occupies less space and it is very quiet while playing discs. I never had read issues or skipping problems with triple layer discs, double layer discs or blu rays.
To get the most out of it, you have to change few settings when you first setup this player. There are many youtube videos on it. Every setup video of ub820 also applies to this, so you can follow those as well.
I’m loving 4k movies on this player so much that I’m feeling it is not necessary to go to theaters for majority of the films. For less than the money of 2 tickets, I can buy a 4k disc and watch it MANY times. So, it’s great value and the video/audio quality easily beats streaming channels out of the water. You have to see it to believe it.
To conclude, this is the best player in this price range and right choice for majority of home video enthusiasts - it is awesome and reliable! You are not making any compromises, go for it!

The Panasonic DP-UB420 is an excellent mid-range 4K Blu-ray player that delivers outstanding performance and value. Right out of the box, the build quality impresses with a sleek and sturdy design that looks great in any home theater setup.
Setting up the player is a breeze thanks to the simple user interface and intuitive remote control. Connecting to my home Wi-Fi network was seamless to enable streaming and firmware updates. The player boots up quickly and disc loading times are fast.
Video quality is simply stunning when playing 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs.
Thank you for the glowing review and the 5-star rating. We're delighted to have provided you with a positive experience. -M

It has a smaller than normal size but fits nicely
right under my TV as it sits on a cabinet.
Picture is clear & colors are vibrant. I think
both sound & picture are state of the art for 4K;
the upconvert function for Blu-rays is superior.

very clear picture good sound. Be sure to get an above average HDMI cable, I would recommend all solid copper that is insulated to reduce the noise coming through the cable( Sound Approach , York County, DJ Taylor)

Great Purchase for Cinephiles

As most reviews note, the menus feels like their from the early-2000s and the remote isn't great. However, the amount of video options is unrivaled, which is why I would recommend for serious movie people or people with a large Blu-Ray collection. I ran the HDR optimizer and Blu-Rays look fantastic on my Sony OLED. Much of the HDR content looks better than Dolby Vision content streamed from Netflix/Disney Plus.
But my biggest praise is the audio quality. I have a Sonos Beam 2 with surrounds and a sub and while Atmos content sounds great over steaming, some Dolby 5.1 content suffers from low dialogue issues, especially on HBO Max content. However when you watch the same movie via Blu-Ray, the audio is so much more balanced (and louder). Even old DVDs (Gladiator, Batman Begins) look and sound as good (if not better) than their streaming, 4k counterparts. Compressed streaming quality simply can't compare to a 4k HDR Blu-Ray. If you are finicky about video/audio quality and have a DVD/Blu-Ray collection gathering dust, this is a great purchase.
We are excited to hear that the product meets your expectations! -M

4.5
I think that most of the cons have been stated here already. We all know that this unit does not support Dolby Vision (DV).. but that's not a big deal.
For this price range I would say that this 4k blu ray player has the best support for Projectors; meaning if you want to see pictures or movie content from a disc player on your Projector... then look no further. Panasonic is the best.
User interface may be a little dated but it's not over complicated and does offer some nice features for semi-advanced/advanced or expert users. Image and Tone Mapping. Picture quality is great.
Not sure if this upscales content better than the Sony in this price range or not. Again though..I think that when this unit is on sale for $150 it's a no-brainer.
But if you need DV then the Sony x700 (x700/m) has it; beware you take the chance of getting a unit that glitches. This is well documented on AVForums.
Oh, and final smoothness and quality of upscaling is done by the display; your TV monitor. If you have a TV monitor that doesn't upscale well or in general has a crappy picture overall then this 4k disc player won't magically make that better lol.
So I'd say that if you can get this player in the $150 to $180 range and you watch alot of blu ray (1080p) or 4k content (you need a 4k television to be able to see a 4k disc) I'd grab this Panasonic for sure. I am happy with mine. I got it for my budget 4k tv..and will probably give it to my parents.
Anything over $180 I wouldn't pay. Not even 6 months ago. Panasonic is going to have a better budget 4k blu ray player coming soon I imagine and it will have Dolby Vision. It will replace this one for the "$249" MSRP that you normally see.

If you don’t need Dolby Vision, this player does just fine with the HDR. The HDR optimizer comes in super handy during the daytime to battle sunlight. Standard Blu-ray looks fantastic upscaled and the sound is on point.

For anyone looking for a first rate movie theater experience the Panasonic 4K Hd player is the way to go. This budget priced 4K performance rivals higher end price 4K players on all levels giving any serious home theater buff a movie experience second to none. The upscale quality on blu-rays is astonishing and movies in the 4K format will blow you away with crisp clear video and mind blowing audio. I reach this product before and at every turn this Panasonic 4K player topped the list for affordable players and with Panasonic being the leading quality 4K manufacturer this player shows you just why Panasonic stands above all others. The price was right and as always Best Buy service delivering my purchase to my car was excellent.
Hi there! Thank you for your fantastic review! We're thrilled to hear our Blu-ray player enhances your 4K TV experience and even elevates standard Blu-ray quality. We’re glad it’s been a great addition to your setup! - S

Panasonic really knocked it out of the park with this player.
This 4k player is simply awesome. Sure, it doesn't have Dolby vision, but the picture is so excellent on my LG 70 inch I don't really miss it. Upscales regular Blu ray and DVDs beautifully. Love the HDR options. And the sound is amazing and crystal clear and I haven't paired it to my surround sound yet.
If you dont need Dolby vision then you need to get this player.

What a great Bluray player! Purchased for my ma for Xmas and it was perfect. Easy to connect with HDMI and it has a load of features that ma won't use but it connects to apps so you can stream directly from the box when connected to wifi. Cheers!

Good Unit Overall/Frustrating Remote

Good unit, but less intuitive (or simply more frustrating) remote control functionality than a Sony player. In particular, there is no button for simply toggling closed captioning on/off, rather, you are forced to navigate menus and then back out/exit each time. On a Sony, it's a simple "on/off" toggle. Similarly, simply showing status (such as elapsed time) is multiple clicks versus simple "on/off" approach in Sony's design.
On the plus side, quality of picture and playing of discs is very good.
Thank you for your feedback, we will consider it for future improvements. We deeply appreciate you took the time to provide us with your thoughts regarding the product. -C

I purchased a Panasonic Blu-ray player over 10 years ago it's balance of performance, features, and a great remote made it a winner. I tried the entry level Sony UHD player. I'm puzzled by the popularity. Terrible menus and lacking in features. The Panasonic is a true blu-ray upscaler. Terrifically sharp images that will match a 4k upscale disc. The fact that the remote hasn't changed in 10 years says something about the consistent quality of Panasonic devices.
