A fantastic UHD Blu-ray player

If, like me, you still watch films via physical disc, then this player is one of the best you can get at this price point. One of the best things about this player that most cheaper players lack is the ability to auto detect when a Blu-ray has Dolby Vision. In most other cheaper players you have to manually switch to Dolby Vision. But this one detects the disc's form of HDR automatically. As long as you are not expecting this player to be your all-in-one entertainment option (it technically has Netflix and Amazon Prime apps, but the interface looks like it's straight out of the '90s with an embarrassingly low refresh rate to boot). But if you have a great OLED display/TV and don't want to spend your entire life savings, this is pretty much the best option out there. Color reproduction is first rate, and the ports in the back allow you to directly connect a 7.1 surround system to the player. I imagine most people running this thing are going to run it through a receiver via HDMI, but it is nice to know the option is there. The player is also silent during playback. I never noticed the whine of the disc spin or the internal fan. Trust me, these types of machines are not made very much anymore, and this one is just about as future proof as it gets at this price point. In my opinion you will not be disappointed.
Hello there! Thank you for your great feedback! We’re delighted to hear that while the player may look bulky, its durable build and professional performance have impressed you. Your 5-star review means so much to us, here’s to enjoying many more seamless experiences with your player! - F

bought this unit because i heard that its up scaling and UHD picture was amazing. i found that my older blue ray dvd look awesome on my sony tv. upsaclce to 4k. the 4k ultra disc look pristine.I had a nice uhd dvd player before but this one cost a little more but can definitely see and hear the difference! the unit automatically adjust to your TV hdmi setting (lcd or oled). the only thing it doesn't have very many streaming app on it. netflix and amazon, no hulu. Overall it's a great UHD bluray ! i would recommend it.

I’ve always only bought Sony players; I bought a Sony 4K OLED TV and was looking for a comparable Blu-ray player; Sony’s lack/awkward implementation of Dolby Vision had me look elsewhere and this player fit the bill. Image quality and sound are awesome; great upscaling also. As they say: you get what you pay for. And this Panasonic plays week with my Sony TV. Recommend (even though the remote takes some getting used to ;)
This is such a nice feedback and we are always trying our best to make the experience of our customers memorable. Thank you so much for taking the time to send this! -C

This is an excellent choice for a 4K blu-ray player. It puts out a great picture and really nice sound. The upscaling of 1080p blu-rays is really impressive - better than I've seen on other players. Dolby Vision is handled automatically (unlike Sony) and looks great.
A minor downside is the remote - not particularly elegant considering the quality of the player. In particular, I dislike accidentally hitting the Netflix button, which is right next to the 'up' navigation button, causing it to leave the disc I'm watching and go to the streaming app.
If it's within your budget, I think it's a very good choice for a 4K player.
Hi Leon! Thank you for your review! We're thrilled to hear you're enjoying the build quality and performance of our Blu-ray player. We appreciate your recommendation! - S

This is a great Blu-Ray. I have made multi video backup discs as well as backup copies of my home videos and my purchased discs as well. It plays all of them without problems. It has a great picture that is very vivid and clear. It seems to upscale the picture from DVD to a hybrid 4K picture. The sound is top notch. I haven't used it for audio cd yet as I don't have it hooked up to speakers but I've heard those that have used it as such praise the sound. This is a great Blu-Ray player. It is well built but the only complaint I have is that the housing is made of a smooth plastic that can get scratched easily if moved or anything laid on it. But if you are buying it to place somewhere and not move it then you will be perfectly fine. I highly recommend this player.
Thank you for your 5-star rating! We are happy to hear you are pleased with the product. -M

This Panasonic UB820 blew me away with it's picture quality! The colors are deeper and brighter, definition is very refined, and the darks are truly black with no crush or grey to black blending issues. DVDs actually look as good as most blu-ray, and 4k discs are a higher class all their own. This is how 4k blu-ray is meant to be seen. I spend a lot of time so focused on how amazing the picture looks that I sometimes forget to focus on the movie itself. Also, the fact that the sound has it's own dedicated HDMI creates crisp, synced reproduction with surround sound, and gives you so many more playback options than an optical cable.
After 2 years of owning the Sony X800 4k player, I was never fully satisfied with the picture quality. The Sony is great for streaming (it has a many great apps and fantastic sound quality, even for TV shows, since it's HDMI rather than optical), but lacks in disc picture quality playback. Every DVD I watched, and even some blu-ray and 4k discs, had bad black crush and picture pixelation in some parts of the films, particularly the dark scenes. It was so distracting in outdoor fireside scenes that I could hardly watch them with the fire glow and blacks fighting each other.
I tweaked the settings on both the player and my television repeatedly on various movies trying to get it right. I have an LG OLED TV with HDR10, Dolby Vision, etc, and I knew the pic had to look better than what I was getting, so I decided to try a new player, and I have become a true believer in Panasonic's 4K player. If picture and sound quality matter to you, this player will impress you.

After a frustrating year attempting to get a Sony UBPX700 to work with my setup (with a Sony TV no less, but through a Marantz AV pre-amp) without freezing (exchanges through Best Buy and Sony, replacing cables, hours of troubleshooting, etc.), a user on an AVS forum recommended I try the Panasonic. When it came in shortly before Christmas, there was a huge dent in the box that looked like the sharp edge of something pierced the cardboard, but on further inspection only the manual was dented, but not the player.
This player has been nothing short of spectacular for me, both in picture quality, reliability and features (sadly, yes, I still own a lot of 3D movies). The fact it auto-detects Dolby Vision is a relief so I don't have to examine the prescription size print on the back of a move case to see if it's Dolby Vision or not and then set it manually. I did not switch out any equipment or cables that I also had hooked up with the Sony, it all just worked. I'm not concerned with how solid it feels (companies can cheat on that one), how sturdy I perceive it to be, as long as it works out of the box and lasts, I am happy.
Reading the various reviews on both the Sony and Panasonic models, I wonder if there are simply compatibility issues depending on existing user hardware (assuming a player isn't defective) no matter how well that hardware is rated. I gave my Sony player to my Dad since it was past the return period, and he hasn't had an issue with it hooked up to it on his Vizio TV. I guess these days, buyer beware, no matter what the reviews say, test it out as soon as you buy something to make sure you aren't going to have any issues during the return window.

After my previous Sony 4K BluRay player failed shortly after its product warranty period expired, I decided to try this model from Panasonic, especially since I was able to get it for $150 off the regular price. The multiple great reviews here have been spot on and I have had no issues at all with this player. Audio and video are both awesome. Highly recommend!

This is the one. Really though. I'm not going to try to spit out fancy cinefile jargon or technical data...Plenty of others have already done that.
Moving from a faulty Sony UBP-X800 to this has been eye opening. Literally. It feels like putting glasses on for the first time. The sound is a major improvement too. Don't hesitate if you are thinking of buying this. And certainly don't buy the Sony- Its riddled with problems.

I had always used my X Box( one, series X, etc.)
as a 4k player. This elevated my movie viewing experience. Color popped in HDR and Dolby vision. Sharpened the image. Satisfied with my purchase.

Was able to buy on open box and got a really good deal on it. If you spot on open box go for it, mine was practically new except a hole on the box that wasn’t too deep. It works well doe Dolby Vision and HDR10 video 4K feed. Used it some Blu Ray movies and it decodes it really well almost 4k quality. The movies were HP 1 and 2, and Captain America Civil War. If I’m able to I’d probably buy a second one.

Great player. Good for 4K, 3D, and standard Blu-rays and standard DVDs. Excellent picture and sound. Also good as a DLNA renderer, allowing pushing video and music to it - and it plays surround music sent to it as surround, unlike AVRs that knock them back to stereo when used a renderers.

What started as replacing a 10+ year old flat screen turned into a complete makeover of our ATMOS surround theater except for the speakers. The new flat screen exposed a weakness in the receiver and then the blu-ray player. The Panasonic was the last piece. Wow! What a change! All the major components are state-of-art and support all the present sound and video formats. Watched our first Ultra HD 4K blu-ray last night and it was like being in a whole new theater. Highly recommend this player.

Upgraded to this player after my previous one died. The automatic Dolby Vision detection is great. Not a single stutter or freeze even on larger 4K discs unlike my previous player. Blu-ray and DVD upscaling is impressive. Totally worth it.
We are so grateful for your 5-star review. Thanks for sharing your rating with us and the community. -C

I was initially prepared to spend a grand on the big brother to this Panny 820 fine player, until closer research showed me that spending twice as much, was NOT going to render double the performance or features. The 820 offers everything the Panny 9000 offers, except the 9000 is just more heavy duty. It's a great unit, but not twice the price great!
I'm loving the quality and performance of the 820. My 4K UHD discs are fantastic on my LG-G2 "77 OLED and Dolby Vision is simply incredible with this combination! I couldn't be happier. Even the staff at Magnolia strongly recommended going with the 820 over the 9000 for all the aforementioned reasons. Even my ISF professional calibrator recommended the 820. I couldn't be happier with this choice.
