Excellent picture (vivid, with contrast, "detail in darkness") and sound (very clean). A little slow to respond to control, and excess steps for routine functions, but performance makes up for these minor user interface issues.

So far, so good. I went back and forth on which 4k player to get and this often came up in recommendations. It's not an Oppo, but it doesn't have the same price tag. The upscaling is great for Blu Ray's, separate audio/video outputs is a nice option, supports both Dolby Vision, HDR and HDR+, and it doesn't skip/freeze on 100gb discs like some of the other players in this price range. Very happy with this purchase. Pro-Tip: look for open box options. I did and got this for $100ish off. The box was rough, but the player was perfect and unused.

The DP-UB820 is an awesome 4K Bluray player and has some great features. Both the Audio and Video from this unit are excellent. I have noticed that some 4K movies that I have played have frozen up randomly but I have not determined if it is the player or the disk itself that is to blame. The network/Smart TV functionality and GUI is very rudimentary and clunky. But your not buying a 4K Bluray player for its apps like Netflix, YOUTUBE TV, etc.. A great feature is that this unit has an independant HDMI audio out. This is great if you have a 4K TV but an older Home Theater Receiver that is not 4K compatible. This feature lets you run an (HDMI 2.0a/b) cable to your 4K TV and run a second HDMI cable to your (non 4K) Home Theater Receiver for (5.1/7.1) audio. The one feature that is missing is an HDMI input(s) on this unit. The Scaler is excellent on the DP-UB820 and it would be awesome if you could take advantage of it by having the option to input to the DP-UB820. Many people have a PS3 or other 1080P devices that would benefit from the DP-UB820's Scaler. HDR(10) and Dolby Vision 4K movies look great and the sound is excellent thanks to its 192-kHz/32-bit 4-DAC. I would recommend this unit to anyone looking for a great 4K Bluray player that will also play DSD (5.6 MHz/2.8 MHz/11.2MHz) and ALAC music files and WAV/FLAC/MP3/AAC/WMA/AIFF formats.

Panasonic picks up where Oppo left off, producing a high-quality 4K UHD Blu-ray player that’s poised to become the format’s new mid-priced standard bearer. Featuring stellar HCX processing, an HDR Optimizer that allows users to adjust HDR content to best suit their viewing environment, superior 4K Direct Chroma upscaling, a host of picture-tuning tools, top-notch HD 3D support, and excellent streaming capabilities, Panasonic’s DP-UB820 instantly becomes the clear choice for discriminating 4K and HD movie mavens. Oppo's demise left a void, but this impressive player more than fills it and comes Highly Recommended.

First of all this is my third Panasonic Blu-ray player. I own the DMP-UB900 and the DMP-BDT500 The 820 is a good player but it could be better to be at the same level as OPPO level Pros: + Easy set up + Great picture quality + Supports Dolby Vision + Great HDR support for projectors + 2nd HDMI port for audio only so you can connect it to a receiver that doesn't support 4K + Cons: - Poor remote, too small, no back lighting - No SACD support so no real universal player - No THX the 900 had THX - Poor build quality especially for the price and compared to OPPO 203 - Even Sony has better build quality!

Had been using an Xbox OneS for my 4k player the last few years but recently upgraded my display to a Sony panel that can run Dolby Vision and since Xbox doesn’t support Dolby Vision for movies I needed a better player. The UB820 is a great player that has all the options you will ever need and more. It’s processing and software definitely gives cleaner image than the Xbox and even seemed to improve on the audio side just a bit…I run a 5.1.2 Atmos speaker system and I noticed it especially in the bass response it seemed just a bit more defined and cleaned up. If you want the best player available for under $500 this is it.

Using this with a 65" LG 65C3PUA and a Klipsch/Denon Atmos surround setup, and it's better than going to the theater. This player will auto switch to Dolby Vision, while others either lack Dolby Vision or you have to manually select it over the regular UHD10. Fantastic sound and picture quality. Great audio decoding if you still have a CD collection or a USB thumbdrive full of music. Seperate audio and video outputs if you have the equipment to take advantage of that.

Its one of the best 4k players you can get for the picture. It Can display a very nice picture for those top notch tvs. Bit pricey but i would suggest to wait for sales that bring the price down 25-35%. Im taking a star off for there is basically no app options an the ones that are there, you dont wanna use them because its better to use your app on your smart tv and the remote is pretty basic

This review applies only to DVD playback. I have not used the streaming capabilities. Pros: Excellent video and audio quality. Automatically determines what format the DVD used. Fast loading with no pauses during playback. Cons: For the price, a lighted remote should be included. The remote fits poorly in the hand and must be looked at to make appropriate selections. It is almost impossible to use in a dark viewing room.

This blu ray player is absolutely amazing, the picture quality is gorgeous and it feels incredibly well made when holding it. Sleek design and a ton of features to play with. As someone who is currently building a physical 4K movie library, this has been a game-changer. Finally having access to every current HDR format is an amazing feeling, along with Atmos and DTS:X. My only issues with this player atm is it's UI and its remote, it feels terribly outdated and the settings menu feels weird to navigate at times. Along with this, the remote feels like its going to fall out of my hand when I use it, with the button layout being opposite of what most remotes have. Very uncomfortable to use. My player did not come with a physical manual either, just a setup guide, which is a personal pet peeve of mine since the website has the full manual for download.

    Amazing Player, Glitchy Firmware

Previously owned a Sony x700. After 5 years, it started showing it's age (overheating issues) and realized it was time to do an upgrade. So you understand why this review is written like this, my setup is as follows: a. This Blu Ray Player b. A Nakamichi Shockwafe 9.2.4 Earc surround system c. Hisense U6G 50" TV with ARC interface I'm connected from the Blu Ray player, through the Nakamichi, to the Hisense TV via the ARC port on the TV. The first thing I will tell you is you need to make sure your HDMI cables game is solid. Spend some money and get the 48Gbps cables. You will be glad you did. The player itself is amazing. I've watched 2 4k movies. One Dolby Vision, and one HDR10. Both Blurays played glitch free, with an amazing picture and awesome Atmos and DTS sound. The firmware itself is another story. The only way I can get this player to power up correctly so I can get to the main player screen (and play DVD's or stream) is to power everything down, then power it all back up via the power on button on the Panasonic Blu Ray Player console, or via the Panasonic Blu Ray player remote. When done correctly, it boots quickly and properly. Failure to follow this procedure leads to absolute frustration (and probably most of the one-star reviews left for this item). Not sure if the firmware is half baked, or if it's a setting issue. I would love to talk to the Panasonic support team to see if it's even fixable. If you know how to fix this, feel free to leave a comment on this review and share.

I try to reserve the Excellent rating for items that are truly best-in-class in all categories. This player is outstanding with regards to video quality, particularly with 4k content. Upscaling 1080p through my Marantz SR7012 AV receiver is also excellent. You will not go wrong if you are looking for a 4k player. Feature wise, the player is fine, but it just seems to be a bit behind the times. Some of the user interface seems a bit dated compared to other devices (not necessarily players), but it certainly has the features needed to perform the functions you need. I would definitely buy this again.

I'm very impressed with this player. I previously had a high-end Oppo blu-ray that had wonderful video and audio quality, but it was slower than molasses loading disks. The setup menus were also poorly designed. The Oppo died right around when I got my 4K TV, so based on WireCutter's review, I bought this player. It's sleek and looks nice in the cabinet. Set up was a snap. I didn't need to do much to get the main settings right and be able to watch a DVD. What a gorgeous picture! I've so far sampled The Matrix and Ready Player One 4K discs. The detail is amazing and suits my LG OLED TV nicely. Diving into the settings to make a few advanced adjustments, I found the menus easy to navigate and responsive. I've also been pleased with the upsampling quality of non-4K blu-rays. Highly recommended.

Awesome upgrade for my home theater! I live in an area without high speed Internet, and decided to try buying this DVD player in an attempt to get real use from my surround sound system. This has multiplied my enjoyment of watching movies at home ten fold. It is a bit of a scavenger hunt to find the 4k dvds (how disappointed was I when I discovered Best Buy no longer sells DVDs!?!). The sound and video quality compared to Blu-ray DVDs is worth the upgrade!

Picture and sound quality are top notch. For the price, i would have expected the unit to be dead quiet, but you can easily hear the disc motor spinning up and running, as well as seek noises. I would expect this to be quiet if not silent for the price, but i guess they reserved that for their $1000 model. The build quality is what i’d expect of a $200 bluray player from 5 years ago, not a modern $400+ unit. The menus are also as bare bones as it gets — they are fully functional, but little more than black on gray text. Panasonic has always been known for putting zero effort into their user interfaces, but they’re still doing this on a fairly premium item in 2023… seriously? On the plus side, it hasn’t given me any issues and plays everything I throw it without any hiccups.

Have an OPPO 203 that is hacked to play all regions and can upscale to 4K but doesnt play 4K CDs nor does it have HDR or Dolby Vision. We have a 4K OLED TV so decided to buy the Panny UB820 since it does all the above and more. Has many features like two HDMI outputs just like the OPPO. This unit will also upscale and add some HDR luminence to your Blue Ray's so they are close to the picture of the 4K mastered movies. The apps for streaming are OK. Netflix works fabulously but the Amazon Prime app needs work. It's sluggish, glitchy and drops connection occasionally. I have this player hard wired to my internet modem BTW. Hopefully Panasonic will do a firmware update and fix the app. All in all for the price, this player is best bang for the buck.
