Bought the Philips on an impulse
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. We were in Best Buy shopping for another item and spotted the Philips smart bulbs starter kit so picked them up. We had been considering adding them or something similar. Installation was very simple, in fact after the log in it did it for us. The only reason I do not give it a 5 star is we cannot connect our Amazon Echo to it. But we are satisfied with operating these from our smart phones, tablet, etc. We get a kick out of our 2018 smart bulb in a 1940's old lamp, picture I have added. The lamp belonged to my grandmother and my husband rewired it. That's quite a different use in 2018 from 1940 , old meets techie. The other is in a rewired lamp from the 1930's. We enjoy the features, dimming, brighter, tones and hues as well.

Philips Hue
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased the hue light hub kit to replace an old appliance timer that I have on a couple of lamps in my house. I added the timers to keep from coming home to a dark house. It's a nice unit and when you pair it with a Google home, you get a way to control lights with a voice command. I recommend this product if you are into home tech.

Yes, and more please!!!!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This was my first entry into the home automation market. So far, it’s been a very good experience. Setup was dead simple. I located the hub next to my Apple Time Capsule and Arlo router. Plug in the power, plug in the Ethernet, launch the app, press the button….done. Now, on to the bulbs. I unboxed them and swapped them in a lamp in my bedroom. Turn both sockets and they turn on by default. Launched the Hue app, and they were discovered immediately. So I created a room, assigned them and was adjusting the levels within about two minutes. The dimming adjustment makes a big difference. No longer do I have to blind myself by turning on a light in the middle of the night when I need just a little light to maneuver to the bathroom. Another reviewer stated that the bulbs don’t remember their previous settings. But I find the opposite to be true. When I turn them on (either with the Hue app, HomeKit, 3rd party app) they come back to their previous setting. Unless I use Siri or Google Assistant and specify what level to turn them on. Another neat part is the app. It allows for easy setup and assignments to various “rooms”. One more feature that sold me on these, was that from the Hue app I can copy all the setting over to Apple HomeKit. So now I can control them from the Hue app, my Google Home Mini or any Siri device. (iPad, iPhone, AppleTV) Yep, these are definitely keepers. When my brother-in-law asked what we could use for Christmas, our first response was more Hues! And I will likely be buying several more once I can wade through all the competing standards to decide what other home automation devices I should get. (e.g. wall outlets, switches, security monitoring, etc)

Next generation of lighting
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I received the starter kit as a gift and honestly never thought I'd use a product like this but I'm learning to love it. The setup is easy enough, you just choose where you want to install the bulbs, download the Hue app, and setup each bulb in the app to control them from your phone. I didn't like having to pull out my phone every time I wanted to turn the lights on/off so I synced it with an Amazon Echo to take advantage of the voice controls and it works seamlessly. I especially like the option to control the brightness of the bulbs. I can tell Alexa how bright I want the room to be and she makes it happen. You can also control that using the app as well. Next step will be ambiance lighting.

Getting in the smart home
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I recently purchased a Google Home and was wanting to start with some home automation. First thought was with my lighting since Philips Hue is one that it is compatible with. I thought I would start with this and see if it was something that I would like. Setup was very simple. First, put the bulbs in whatever locations you want. For me that was simple since I have a small apartment and live by myself; living room and bedroom. Easy. Second connect the hub. Power and cat5 to my router. No brainer. Last downloaded the Hue app on my phone. Follow the quick start and everything is connected. Everything works on the first go. Brilliant! Note: there are two Hue apps. The 2nd generation allows you to set up rooms and gives you scenes out of the box that are useful. There are presets for full on, dimmed and nightlight for each light. The only downside is that the routines, like Home and Away, do not work properly. Sure you can use your phone as a remote, but I wanted it to turn my lights on when I get home and off when I leave. There is an option for setting a location but it doesn't work. Just do a quick internet search and you will see that. But there is the 1st generation app. The location settings and timers work perfectly! Location awareness turns my lights on when I pull into the complex and shuts them off when I leave. Just what I was wanting. Downside, the scenes are not very good, you can't set up lights as a room (easily) and the light controls are sliders which gets annoying. Fortunately you can use both apps simultaneously. So I setup routines using 1st gen and control the lights manually using 2nd gen. Works like a charm. Now I have exactly what I was wanting. I was so thrilled that I bought another bulb and a dimmer switch. Great for my bedside lamp. I setup a routine that turns all the lights off at bedtime except the bedside lamp. For that I have the dimmer so I'm not left in the dark. I also have setup up some recipes in IFTTT to blink the lights when it's bedtime and to automatically turn my lights off at midnight. Just in case I fell asleep with them on, of course. Integration with the Google Assistant is seamless. I can just say 'Ok Google, turn on (whatever)' or 'Ok Google, dim (whatever)' and it does it. Almost like having my own Javis. I admit it, I'm hooked. The only issue I've had was when I tried putting one in the kitchen it had an issue with connecting to the hub from time to time. Can't move the hub right now so I just removed it for the time being. Once I get a place of my own I will be adding more lights, some I plan on using the color and some the white ambiance. Another note, if you really want to get the most out of the automation part you really need to use a Google Home or Amazon Echo. The app is great but it is kind of a pain to have to use it. Much better to just use voice commands. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the issues with the 2nd gen app. Once the get that resolved it will be a perfect lighting solution.

Home automation at its finest
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you want to save money or just love the convenience of having automated lighting Hue is the Choice with a bridge included in the kit you can connect up to 50 different bulbs rather than pay the steep price of other brands that sell individual bulbs that don't need a hub. Up front it's more money but in the long run you're saving up around 15 a bulb if do the hue over ilumi or lifx etc... you can set scheduleds, different colors, and even dim. The only thing that's a must, is good WiFi, other than that these things are amazing

Really good smarthome remote lights.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Easy to set up. The lights in this set are only white, not color, but the included hub can control any of the Hue product line. The Hue app walks you through each step. The app also has nice features such as ability to dim the lights, setting up timed on/off and even detecting when you leave/return home to automatically turn lights on/off. Once this was set up, I then connected the lights to my Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. This allows me to control the lights no matter where I am.

Perfect setup for smart home
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. There are so many "smart" lights, and devices out there, it gets confusing. This Phillips Hue hub works well, and seems to have been around long enough to have worked out most of the kinks. The set up includes 2 light bulbs and the hub. You need the hub to control the lights. Set up was pretty easy, plug in the hub to your router and screw in the light bulbs and pair them. You should know though that the hub most be plugged into the router with an actual CAT5 cable, you cannot connect the hub to your router via internet. That may be a limitation for some people. Once everything is plugged in, pairing is pretty seamless. You will need to download the app. I use this app on my iPhone and it works well with the app or with Apple Home. To really make this shine though, you should connect it to a smart home device. Amazon Echo in my case. You could just use the app, but nothing beats telling Alexa "turn off my living room lights" and having it done automatically.

Nice white, decent brightness.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have 4 of these bulbs in a track fixture a 200 square foot office with a high ceiling. 4 bulbs is great for most dark winter nights, and grey spring days. I like that I can control my individual bulbs, whether they are on or adjust the brightness using my app. The only issue is that I have to reset the connection to the hub often. Most of the time I turn them on/off with the wall switch rather than the app, unless I am needing to change the brightness levels.

Easy Alternative Smart Bulb
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. We had a BT bulb and app was terrible. This is a good alternative with a good app and easy to install since one doesn't have to replace a switch. I would prefer the switch option, but I don't have enough wires (Switches typically cost less) I'd buy this again without hesitation.

Nice bulbs
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this set because I had just bought the echo and wanted a cool gadget to add to it. Overall it’s great. It’s nice to come home and turn on the lights before I walk in. I like the dim feature. The only thing I didn’t like was that there is a range on how far the bulbs are. Sometimes mine go into an “unreachable” mode and won’t work but overall great buy!

Simply - its so easy
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Hue + Amazon Echo make it so easy to get started with Smart Home technology. Inside my front door are six steps - the light switch is at the top of the stairs - I used to have to leave the light on - or fumble up or down the stairs when leaving or returning at night. Now its simply - "Alexa, turn lights on (or off)" as enter or leave. Installation/configuration is a breeze - it took 15 minutes to change the bulb, set up the hub and then enable the Alexa app. With the initial problem that I purchased the hub for solved - I added a couple of more bulbs and set up schedules for those.
