Customers are saying

Customers admire the hue BR-30 Starter Kit's ease of use, vibrant colors, and the ability to control the lights individually via smartphone app or other smart home systems. Many appreciate the straightforward setup process and the extensive compatibility with other home automation devices. However, some customers find the product expensive, and a few have reported experiencing a buzzing sound from the bulbs. The app's user-friendliness is also a point of positive feedback.

We absolutely love our hue lights. We are having great fun setting moods for different times of day. I was worried that the regular white light load would not be bright enough for every day use, but they are just fine. The price of the lights at Best Buy was less than Home Depot in other places I have seen them

So this device is great for what it does - the colors are fantastic - and you can set them to be customized to anything you like -- using IFTT it can easily be connected to other home automation devices - or can be directly integrated to things like NEST - for features like turning lights on or off when you are away. I also own 2 of the Philips HUE Lamps and can control all of the lights together or individually or as a whole. The APP leaves a big to be desired -- Plan to get the Iconnecthue app as it does a better job than the one provided by Philips - so much so they actually recommend it on there website.. go figure. Also you might want to consider the switch wall unit that allows you to preset up to 4 different light scenarios - this way you can control your lighting without your phone as well. We liked the phone app and all, but sometimes a nice little switch is just to convenient. Also this hub does work with other zigbee lights -- Philips does make some A19 bulbs that are only 20 bucks ( white only for dimming and on off, not LED with colors ) for rooms you do not want to spend 60 bucks a bulb in == but my basement uses recessed BR30 lights - Philips only makes those today in led color. I had no desire to put 8 Philips BR30 LED bulbs in at 60 bucks a piece- so I was able to purchase GE Link White zigbee BR30 lights for 17 dollars each - the Philips bridge saw them, and I can control them via the app for brightness and on off.

Got these as a gift from my wife for xmas, and i was super excited to hook them up. Set up was very easy i just plugged the bridge into my router and installed the app and followed the instructions...super simple! Pros - Normal lighting conditions are like any other bulb and you can adjust warmth coolness - Dims even if you don't have dimmer switches using the app - You can install tons of other apps to control them - works with my harmony remote - installed an app on my phone that uses the camera to adjust colors on the fly while you watch movies Cons - wish there was better implementation to use it with my entertainment center (like if my TV had an app that can run in the background while i watch so it adjusts colors etc)

I picked this up during the Black Friday sale and was disappointed to find that the some of the bulbs had a loud buzzing sound when turned on. I have a new house and replaced LED BR30 bulbs that never buzzed at all, so I was very frustrated to have these very expensive bulbs buzzing like a beehive. I ended up contacting Philips and they replaced 2 of the bulbs, but even one of those had a noticeable buzz in some situations. Still, I do like being able to control the colors and lighting in my living room for different situations, especially when combined wit the Bloom lights. The hue system isn't cheap, but it is pretty cool.

Sure nobody needs lights that can change colors, but they can be fun. Definitely on the expensive side, but not as much as it seems if you were to buy dimmable LEDs and either a single pole or double dimmer switches. Plus no worries about figuring out wiring. The surface is just starting to be scratched with the possibilities like IFTTT integration as well as Scyfy programming that syncs with your lights.

...to start you down an expensive journey of filling your home with ultra pricey lights! they are addictive...be warned. You think you will just do the living room, then the bedroom, then the front porch, then the downstairs, then.... you get the picture! General review: OK, yes they are expensive...But, they are awesome. If you buy only a couple at a time and wait for sales at Best buy (they DO have them from time to time) You can eventually have the whole house set up. Speaking of set-up, it is relatively easy for even a novice. I do have suspicions however, that they take up a bit of the bandwidth if that is an issue for you. They work best if your home is primarily light colored walls, as you can completely have a new look whenever you want to by uploading any picture or color scheme that suits your mood and...Bam, new paint!

I bought this as a gift for a friend, but I helped her set it up and have seen it in action. It was very easy to set up and we were able to perform simple tasks with the lights (brightness & color changes, timers, etc.) within minutes. Everything worked as it should have worked. She liked that she could turn on the lights in her house before she entered it one late night. In that regard she has no complaints system. However, she found, and I concur, that these lights are way too dim for large rooms (she has 20-ft high cathedral ceiling). The lights are better suited for smaller rooms (like a small bedroom) or for use as accent lights. Some of the other Hue lights go up to 800 lumens and might have been better for her large room, so I would recommend those if you want to use this system as your primary lighting in a large room.

Works as it says. It's pre-paired with the included lights so it makes setup simpler than when you have to add another. Hate that it requires a wired connection to your router/AP. It would be so bad except it uses one of the most common bands out there. Be sure to look for and play with different channels in your setup because this can make a big difference in how much interference you have to deal with. If they could make this wireless as well it would make placement and install cleaner and easier.

Having the ability to change not only the color of the lighting of any room with a light socket by simply having a Philips Hue BR-30 in it but also to do so via an app on a mobile device feels very futuristic. Easy to set up and connect. Must purchase the wireless bridge for the whole thing to work. The bulbs are expensive but worth it.

These lights are great in the winter time when the light is poor. Helps with winter blues. I love the alarm and can set early morning to replicate a sunrise and gradually get brighter during the morning. I also have settings for watching television that eliminates any glare. I also can have setting for late night reading.

I bought the LED strip for bias lighting and saw I had to buy this whole other starter kit for $200, okay. Then there's the other bulbs at $60 each, and the Tap so you don't always have to open an iPad at another 60, it's expensive for what you get, but its value received, it's nice to come back and have lighting that fits the day. A one bedroom apt in the city it's perfect. Needs more apps and relies on user to use photos as their presets are generic and boring.

These lights are tons of fun!! Capable of being controlled by multiple iPhones or Androids, my wife, son and I sometimes struggle for control over the color of the lights! During the Super Bowl, we would change to a team color every time a touchdown was made. My ONLY complaint about these lights would be the cost. Were they less expensive, I'd have them in every fixture in my house!

The good: is a really nice way to create ambience in any room. Setup is pretty simple and straightforward. The app is pretty intuitive as well The bad: Green colors are hardly, they're closer to a yellow. The initial start up is quite costly, but even more so are the bulbs at roughly 60 a piece. It's a fun way to spice up a room, but you may be limited by the price of individual bulbs any other add-ons.

Most lights have one temperature and can not do colors. These lights can be set to any light temperature from the almost blue high temperature to the close to yellow lower temperature that the old incandescent lights were. The lights can be controlled from a smart phone or a Logitech Harmony remote. These lights can do any color of the rainbow. They are a bit pricey though.

Have 9 of these now setup in my basement, really useful for managing different scenes when doing different things (watching a movie, playing cards, etc.) Really nice to have the high degree of control made possible by this system, but it is expensive. Hopefully other manufacturers will produce compatible bulbs in the future driving the cost of this system down.

Hue lights are a lot of fun to change the lighting in a room. Colored lights that come with starter kit are expensive, but you can get add on white lights made by GE called connected( $15) and add on to your Hue system for the whole house.

Philips Hue starter kit was easy to set up and control with my phone. It is a good entry level lighting control option for people who wish to have a few lights in their house under their control. It is limited in what you can preprogram them to do. The color changing aspect of the lights are awesome.

These work well once you have them set up, but it can be a bit challenging to get past the initial install. The adjustable color range is nice, but the key thing I find most useful is that each bulb is independently addressable for brightness. This is useful in a room where you have multiple bulbs controlled by one switch, since with normal bulbs you're stuck with either all bulbs on or all bulbs off. The biggest deficiency in the Hue product set (apart from the black-box setup that's really difficult to debug when it doesn't go smoothly) is the lack of good wall switch controller options. They expect you to do everything through a smart phone app, which one of those things that makes a nice demo video but is pretty terrible to live with. It a ridiculously cumbersome way to do something that should be effortless and invisible. If you're a serious DIYer, you can do what I did and cobble together a custom system with third-party wireless wall switches and a server to translate and relay Hue commands through your network, but that's insanely complicated to set up - I only did it because I enjoy that kind of project.
