I am giving this 3 * just because of its rather poor design. Yes, it does exactly what it's advertised but the switch is too bulky and feels cheaply built.

Bad design choice, but better than nothing

The Tap switch is built around an odd system where three smaller buttons are connected with a single large button. The end result is that hitting one of the smaller buttons (labeled 2, 3, or 4) has a reasonable probability of having the switch register that as a press on the large button (labeled 1). I bought two of these switches, and I noticed that one switch has this issue a lot more than the other (both have different "DC" model numbers on the back). Also to note is that the switch still requires a network connection to work, so you cannot use it on a Hue Go away from your home network after registering functions, for example.

After spending hours trying to get the first one to work (myself and with Hue tech staff) I gave up and exchanged it for a new one. None of the buttons would activate. Second one synced up fine but still, one of the buttons does not work consistently. I have this mounted on a wall to serve as the main room lighting switch, and for that purpose it is ok I suppose. But the overall look and feel of this is really poor. Hoping Philips comes up with a more robust remote control unit that is battery powered. Until then there are no other options for remote control of a room outside of an app.

After switching a large number of conventional bulbs to Hue bulbs, I noticed an issue: not everyone who comes to my house knows how it operates. Everyone is used to normal light switches, but I would often come home to find many of my Hue lights without power because, for example, the babysitter needed to turn off the lights and found a way to do it. Enter the Hue Tap. It looks similar enough to a light switch that even someone unfamiliar with the system would understand its basic use. I put in two of these units where a physical toggle was good to have. Response time is fast, and I love the fact that it generates its own power from the act of pressing it. It looks nice and unobtrusive. I'm not crazy about the price tag, but it was worth it for the two places I deployed them.
