    No more light switches

This starter kit gives you everything you need to change 4 lights in your home from lights that require physical flicks of the switch to ones that will be turned on and off with your smart phone. Setting up the physical devices is REALLY easy - plug 'em in and turn 'em on. The Hub (which comes with the kit and is required to operate the lights) can ONLY be connected to your home network (and MUST be connected to your home network) with a physical ethernet cable (not your wifi). The Hub then communicates with your light bulbs through your wifi router to the light bulbs. The light bulbs that come with THIS kit are only white - not capable of changing colors but they can be dimmed through the app from barely on to bright white. So a couple of things that you should know/consider before you go down this route: 1) Again, the Hub MUST be connected to your home network through by an ether net connection. 2) Your lightbulbs must be in a place that receives a wifi signal from your network. 3) You've got to shop around and sort through a handful or two of smart phone apps to figure out which one(s) you want to use .... it's a little painful doing that - I've only used free ones and they tend to be a little clunky and not necessarily straight forward but you'll figure it out. 5) The smartphone apps generally let you "program" your lights to turn an and off at certain times - they're all a little different so if that's an important feature for you check the individual app capabilities. 4) Perhaps the MOST important consideration and something I haven't seen discussed anywhere else. You can no longer use the switch to operate the lights ... you've got to leave the lights turned on and ONLY USE THE APP to turn the lights on and off. So if your spouse or kids or guests don't have the app and/or aren't connected to your network you will be turning the lights on and off. Also, imagine that your TV room has 8 recessed lights in the ceiling all operated by a single on/off switch and you want to be able to turn off the two that are right above the TV providing glare. The good news is that you can do this. The bad news is that the only way to do this is to replace all 8 light bulbs with these $50/each wifi bulbs and program (easy) a scenario that turns the front two off and gives you dim control of the remaining 6 or something light that ... again, the switch must be left on so turn the lights off you'll need to use your smart phone ... no more walking into the room and hitting the light switch to turn them on.

This is a decent product. Well reviewed and the starter kit gets you underway to "smarten up" your home. Having tried this starter kit for a few months, I am yet to see the practicality behind the huge marketing hoopla - sorry I just don't see it for the starter kit. The Hub setup is pretty straight-forward, but beyond switching them on/off (the starter kit does NOT have colored bulbs) there is little else to do. The brightness (aka lumens) is pretty low for an average sized room - unless you like it that way - you have to use at least 2. This is best suited for people who live in lofts, studios or small sized apartments. The only advantage I see is in the Hue app is that I can plug these bulbs in my driveway and have them switch on after sunset (using location geo-fencing) when I get back home. However, Philips forgot that I need to switch them off too, so I have to remember to get back inside and pull out my phone to switch them off - doesn't make sense! Most other app driven capabilities like (wake up routine - when lights go from 0% to 100% brightness gradually) and go to sleep routine (the opposite of wake up) are NOT supported on these bulbs! The app however allows you to dim the the bulbs to use as night-lamps in kid's rooms. To make things even more "interesting", during setup you have no way of identifying individual bulbs (they show up as 1,2,3,4, etc.) and post setup once the bulbs are recognized and registered on the Hub, God forbid if you want to move the bulb to another room/location - you spend an atrocious amount of time trying to figure out which one you moved (was it 1 or 3, no wait it was 4!). Overall the product is a decent/robust product. I have used these bulbs outdoors in my driveway and they work fine across all seasons. This review is meant to know the full length and breadth of the product. Made me certain that Hue Bulbs are not for me at their current price point. I have had better results using LED bulbs in conjunction with smart plugs/switches etc. like Wemo... and if you are into IoT, alternate options lend themselves much better to setting up routines using IFTTT, Flow, etc.

    LightsAreGood....But

The lights are good, and although there was a staggering lack of instructions, they're easy to install, connect to the router and download the app and software upgrades. But, the functionality of the app is questionable. I set up two "rooms" to far, the "Bedroom" (a spare bedroom) and "Outside". The "Bedroom", was setup to turn on at 10:00PM, and the "Outside" was set to turn on at sundown, and off at sunset. When I went through the whole process, and then I woke up to find both light still on. The rooms were also setup as individual rooms, and then as a routine. Can someone help, because the lack of instructions for this product is truly staggering. The website offers no help either. It is really surprising that not even basic instructions are written.

This was our first smart home purchase and you can say that it wasn't quite what I expected. The ability to turn on and off your lights from home is awesome, but I was really hoping I would be able to do it when I wasn't home. The connection was hard to set up and the distance for internet wasn't great. They are a bit pricey so not sure I will expand to the colored lights, but I sure am tempted. Overall, the product is good.

The bulbs function as they should and the app is simple to set up and navigate. The downside of the devices is the controller. While other bulbs are able to be directly connected to the network, these require a controller, and the controller causes static on my VoIP line. This is not acceptable, so I disconnected the controller and have 4 very expensive LED bulbs.

Only occasionally works with Amazon Alexa

I bought this to start setting up my house with smart home features. Phillips Hue is supposed to work with Alexa, but the integration between Alexa and Phillips Hue is spotty at best. I will save up to replace the Phillips Hue with Alexa compatible devices. It probably works well with other systems.

It's a nice kit with 4 lights, but the Philips Hue system is limited to lights that have the build in wifi/dimmer capability. I wish they would expand the system to have a Hue dimmer so I can dim "regular" led lights in a large light fixture, I don't want to buy 8 hue lights, just one dimmer in some cases, I don't need to individually dim these lights.

Need a HUB and all switches ON

The bulbs are ok, but first you need the HUB, so it will not work with your WIFI and second to control the lights you have to leave the Switch ON all the time. So you have to use Google Home or similar to control the lights. I would buy a smart switch instead of the smart lights.

You have to have a hue hub to enjoy the bulbs, expensive bulbs with not much control. Color is about 2700k and I would prefer these bulbs to be 4100k for a nice clean white. Once set up and updated all you can do is turn on, off and dim

Ended up returning this kit. It needs to be hardwired into your router. That's another device, another ethernet cable, and another power cable/adapter taking up space. It was just too much. I opted for TP Link lightbulb instead, which connect directly to Wi-fi.

It's working, but at least for me, isn't as intuitive as it could/should be. When using it with an Amazon Echo, we ended up with duplicate lights, etc. That could be user errors...but directions are sparse. Do like that the lights come on gradually versus the "click" of a normal switch.

Already had hub but no color bulbs. Commands to get various colors with HUE APP; while not bad thru HUE app it is tedious. Thru; Google Voice; more tedious. Need a teleprompter to remember commands. Thru Amazon Alexa voice or APP. even worse (didn't think it was possible).

Got a couple of bulbs for Christmas, but needed a hub so bought this kit. Works well, although the problem with this and all smart bulbs, if the switch gets shut off, they're not so smart anymore. Need to spend even more on smart switches to make it really worthwhile.

I purchased two sets. The setup was a little confusing (little to no directions). I got one set to work at one house but the other set would never communicate with my Amazon Echo. I recommend the bulbs but only if using with Echo Plus. Not a big fan of the Philips hub.

So for a year I loved these lights, but then they disconnected from our Alexa and since then I haven’t been able to reset them. It has been over a month. Super frustrating considering I am tech savvy and still cannot figure it out.

I think with playing with where to put the lights will make me like these lights more. I installed them in the kitchen and you have to leave the light switch on so i would HAVE to use google. Sometimes it’s easier to flip a switch than wake up google. We’ll see...

Got these as a deal of the day for the price they are nice and great quality. Sometimes they do not work or synch so you have to restart them or turn them on and off by hand. They are not as friendly to set up with Apple

This starter pack is a little pricey. Set with Google home was a little confusing. Lastly the overall brightness was disappointing. Phillips doesn't make any bulbs that are brighter to add either.

these lights work great however, if you want "daylight" white color of more of a "blue-white" avoid these and go for the white and ambient kit as these are ambient, "orange-white" kind.
