Love the Lamp and Hue System – Needs Tweaking

When I opened the package I first took out the instructions. The instructions are three steps, turn on your light, plug in the Hue Bridge and connect to Wi-Fi, and download the Hue App. Could not be simpler to get the product up and running and only takes a few minutes. That said I find that the system is lacking in instructions and information. That said, we love the light system. Will use the adjective “Fun” to describe our experience using Hue, as well as quite convenient. If you are kicked back on the couch at night watching TV and have several lights on in your room group you can simply turn on or off lights, or dim with commands to Alexa or with the app on a tablet or phone. If you are getting drowsy you can turn the Table Lamp to “Relax” or “Nightlight” scene to put you in the sleepy mode before bedtime. Love it. Great fun when away from home or in another room to change the lights, to everyone’s surprise the first time. Friends saw our lighting system and went straight to Best Buy the next day to purchase. First thing the wife did was to go into the next room and turn off the lights in the living room on her husband. When you arrive home in the evening you can give a simple command to Alexa and turn all connected Hue lights on throughout your home, a nice warm fuzzy feeling. If you are away from home in the evening or on vacation you can turn lights on with your phone app for security. After getting kid(s) into bed you can leave a light set to “Nightlight” and later simply turn the light off with a command to Alexa. Hue does have some maturing to do with availability of information and developing the Alexa Skill Set further. The Alexa Skill Set needs to be able to manage lights by name in each group of lights. What I mean by this is that you can set groups up in the Hue App, i.e. Living Room, Bedroom, Kitchen, etc. and then assign names to individual lights within a group. At present I could not turn off or on a given light in a room (group) by name, Alexa will only turn all the lights on/off or adjust all to same setting. It would be great to command Alexa to dim light “one” in living room and not adjust any others. Additionally, have yet to find a comprehensive Alexa command set listing, which of typical of Alexa Skills. You can easily manage all individual lights within a group or groups with the Hue App. My experience with Alexa Skill Sets is that they are typically refined over time so I am confident that Alexa will soon have the Skills for managing the Hue system fully developed. Another issue I have with the Philip Hue is that the company did not see fit to develop a PC or MAC based application to manage the system. That is a key gripe that I personally have with many of todays devices. We have computers running throughout our home, but I must go find an Android or IOS device to mange my lighting. The lights are rated to a Maximum of 25,000 hours of use. If you use a light for three hours a day and reached the maximum possible lifespan it would be slightly over 22 years! My take is with typical use you will find the lifespan somewhere between 2-4 years. If the lights do have this life expectancy it makes the system highly cost effective. The Hue App for Android is well done, easy to follow, easy to use and manage the system. Kudos. The Hue system works well and has great potential for the connected home. Torn on my rating of the Hue Lamp, want to give the review a 5 Star as I really enjoy the lighting and look forward too many years of service. On the other hand, want to give it a 3 Star review for lack of information PC/MAC software and the lack of full Alexa control. Therefore, in compromise I have given 4 Stars. My family loves this system and we will continue to expand our lighting configuration. Knowing the quality of Philips products, I feel confident that Hue will continue to expand and mature into a marvelous system well into the future. As it’s said the Proof is in the Pudding. When our friends saw the system the other day in our home they fell in love with it on the spot. Went straight to Best Buy the nest day and had it up and running that afternoon. My friend is not tech savvy and told me it was absolutely simple to setup and enjoy. FYI: if you add additional Hue Lights to your Hue System keep in mind that the individual lights are not developed to work with lamps with dimmers.

The Philips Hue Wellner Lamp hits the mark. It has a simple, modern look but is actually far from simple. What you get in the box is a lamp dome that plugs into the wall and a light bulb. The lamp can be controlled in several different ways: with voice commands through Alexa or Google Assistant, through the app on your smartphone or through a Phillips Hue accessory like a dimmer switch, motion sensor, or tap switch. Control is not limited to turning the lamp on or off. You can use any of the above methods to dim the lamp, change the hue from warm to cool white, change the light "recipe" (i.e. different hues suited for reading, concentrating, relaxing, etc.). You can also use the mobile app to set timers or to control the lights while you are away from home. The reason I gave this four stars instead of five is because of the expense of the product. The LED light bulb is much less expensive to operate than an incandescent light bulb, but other costs of ownership are more expensive. You will need the Phillips Hue Bridge if you don't already have one, which is a significant one-time added cost. You will also need a smartphone and wi-fi. Another knock is that there is no on/off switch on the lamp or power cord so you can't control the lamp manually. I should note that the bulb only gives you shades of white as opposed to the tons of shades of color that other Hue bulbs will provide. This is supposed to be a lamp for wellness, so the different shades of white are the best way to accomplish that. Bottom line is that if you already have some Hue lights in your home and are looking to expand, this is a really nice looking product that I think you'll like. If you are wanting to just start out with Hue lights, you probably want a starter kit first.

Setup: If you don’t have a Hue bridge already, you will need one to use the lamp. The Hue bridge is easy to set up. All you need is a wired network connection on your home modem or router. I set mine up on a wired port on a child node on my wireless network and it worked fine. After the bridge is connected and turned on, you need to install the Hue app on your mobile phone or use the Hue web site to connect to the bridge. My bridge needed a software update at setup. The app said the update was complete, but pressing “Done” after the update was “successful” did nothing. I had to perform the update again (or perform a second update) before the bridge would work. Once bridge is updated and online, the app will guide you through connecting all of the Hue lights within range. Individual lights can be assigned to rooms. Control: Lights can be controlled individually or as a group within each room. The app will work locally over your wireless network or remotely over your phones cellular service if you establish an account at the my.meethue.com. The web interface to your my.meethue.com account will allow you to enable/disable your bridge and mobile app, but it will not allow you to control your lights. This must be done through the app. There are three types of lights available for your Hue system. The basic “white” light can be dimmed, but will not vary in color, remaining fixed at 2700K. There are two types of “ambiance” bulbs. The “white ambiance” bulb can be varied from warm (2200K) to cool (6500K). With the “color ambiance” bulbs you can use any one of 16 million colors. You could get “funkadelic” with a few of these bulbs in one room. The app allows you to control the brightness and color (“ambiance” bulbs only) of each Hue bulb in your lighting network. The app can be controlled by touch or voice commands. If you choose to share location information with the app (and have an active my.meethue.com account), you can control the behavior of your lights as you leave and return home. This might freak out those who are still in the house, but it’s possible. You can also set schedules for each bulb (or room) that vary by day of the week. You can even specify the “width” of a random window for the beginning and end of each cycle. The automation system is well thought out and implemented and great when you plan to be away from home for a few days. Lamp: The Wellner table lamp looks something like a stemless mushroom made of white glass. It has a few very modest bits of silicone around the base. I suggest supplementing these with something more substantial that will allow air under the base, particularly if you plan to place it directly on a wood surface. The glass globe is rather thin. The advantage is that it is not very heavy. The down side is that feels rather fragile. I recommend placing it on a stable surface where it is unlikely be get bumped.

It may be fair to say the HUE glass ambient globe may be the latest novelty in lighting since the lava lamp. Since it can be programmed (via voice or smartphone or tablet) to change brightness and white color intensity. The mood in any room of the house can be set depending on the occupant's activity. I found setting it to warm, soft glow is perfect for watching TV. Then, set to bright white when I am trying to do a task like sewing a button on my shirt. Then again for reading a magazine or book, the globe's color and brightness can be adjusted to your preference. The glass globe is the size of a soccer ball. Small silicone stickers act like feet to protect your furniture from scratches. The only thing I had to do was unpack it and screw in the ambiance bulb. The cord is roughly 6-feet long. Programming it into the HUE bridge through the app is simple too. ALEXA found it easily as a device and learned skill. I have it set to a timer function in the living room so the lights are on when I come down stairs for breakfast and go off at sunrise. Try the wake up function in the bedroom and wake up to the 'morning sunrise' Ala hue.

My Philips Hue Ambiance Wellner Lamp arrived and I was very excited to add it to my Philips Hue collection. Packing is nicely done. When opening, I kept looking for more. It's just the glass lamp and a light bulb that you screw in. I thought, surely there is a base that the glass attaches to, but nope! I don't think it detracts from the attractiveness, but I would've appreciated a brushed nickle or some type of accent stand--especially for the price. Setup is a breeze. Basically screw in the bulb, plug it in, and connect to the Hue Bridge. While this lamp doesn't come with a full color bulb, it is 100% interchangeable in case you want a little flare with your lamp. The white ambiance bulb is impressive. The light mimics natural light so it can go from warm white tones to cool white. I'm always one for warm white which is very relaxing whether reading, watching TV, or getting ready for bed. In all, I love the addition to my bedroom and I think it'd make a great addition to any space where you'd like additional light. It's plenty bright enough to light up the room without feeling harsh and can be soft enough to create a relaxing and warm environment. My only suggestion would be to add a small base to it.

Really nice smart light. You have to make sure you have the Phillips Hue central hub or you will not be able to use the smart features of the dimable included bulb. If you do, you can dim it, switch from cool to warm color, make a schedule etc. You can also add your Hue central unit to google home app to control it from there by the way. The footprint of the glass stand is very wide. I was thinking on putting this on my night stand however due the massive size of the base, I just moved it to my coffee table on my living room, so consider that! Other than that its a nice light that I can dim or turn on while watching movies etc so I can see. Some people use it for light therapy but I haven't, no need, but you could. Great value with the included smart bulb!

This Philips light is the first of several hue items I chose to install. After installing the bridge (which is needed to control the light remotely), I added the light to the system. It was surprisingly easy to add and configure through the app on my phone. The light allows me to set a waking schedule that matches my wake times each day and eases the waking process. It works well. I also like that I can control the quality of the light to match the situations - reading, relaxing, dim or bright, warm or cool, etc. The only negative I have is that it is large and takes up most of the table top. The bottom edge of the glass is unprotected (un buffered) and will scratch the top of a table if it is not picked up to move it. Also, it would be nice to control it at the fixture in addition to through the app. There is no physical on/off switch.

So this light is a simple and complex as it can get at the same time. Simple to setup (open box, screw in bulb, plug in, add to app), Simple to use. Philips HUE app, or several third party apps, and you can completely use this light. The large gum-drop shaped glob, disperses the light all over the room, and looks pretty nifty on your desk, or table. Pros: Easy to setup and use... no issues at all. Connects right to your Philips Bridge (sold seperately). Bright, modern, and just down right an eye-catcher Con: The lightbulb included is locked into the "cool" daylight colors, this isn't a full Philips Hue light bulb.. So no reds, greens, purple, orange. White and light blue is the range. Pro to counter the con: The bulb isn't fully integrated and locked in, so you could swap it out for a different Philips Hue smart bulb if you wish.

I love this lamp! Upon its arrival, I was both excited and afraid to open the box and put this lamp to usage. The excitement came from opening it to pleasantly find out it was larger than expected and the nervousness came from being afraid that in my haste to set it up, I would accidentally drop it! The lamp is beautiful—I have chosen to place it on my bedroom’s night stand. The hue from the light is wonderful in so much that it isn’t harsh on the eyes. I know that the unit is controlled via a Bridge app with Alexa voice controls to dim its lightening, cut it on and off, but at this point I haven’t invested in the Bridge app. However, I am enjoying the lamp for its aesthetics and soft hue that it gives.

This is a mixed review - While this is a Hue product, it does everything that the rest of the Hue line does. Links to the bridge, remote dim and brighten, and will connect to the Phillip's products such as motion detectors to automate. It comes with a standard white Hue bulb, so don't expect colors right from the box (but you can switch it out) What you see is really what you get - a lampshade with a bulb and a cord. No stand, no mount, and very limited ability do do anything but to set it onto a table I set this up on my workbench in the garage along with a Hue motion detector. It does what it is supposed to, but just looks incomplete. The light comes on when I enter the room, and I set it to turn off after 5 minutes of no motion If this is what you want, then perfect, otherwise just 3 stars

Attractive, though Pricey, Addition to Philips Hub

The Philips - Hue White Ambiance Wellner Dimmable LED Smart Table Lamp is attractive (subjective, but I really like it) and offers a nice range of white light intended to facilitate the desired mood or response at the appropriate time. The price is high for a bulb, glass globe and electric cord with no manual controls (other than to plug the lamp in or not). If you don't have a Philips Hue Bridge hub (required to control the lamp), then the initial investment does not justify this purchase alone. Because of this, I would not recommend it to a friend unless the price was significantly lower than at present. However, if you've already invested in a Philips hub and are intentionally building a smart-home environment to add function and pleasure to your home, this would be an attractive addition.

The Philips Hue White Ambiance Wellner LED White Table Lamp brings satisfyingly soft illumination to your favorite nook and cranny. It simulates natural light to help you relax and feel energized in the morning (or whenever you wake up), and it's bright enough in the red spectrum to read by at bedtime. The Hue table lamp connects to the Hue bridge for remote control. I went to the Michigan Avenue Best Buy in Chicago for assistance in putting together an iPhone and Android controlled Hue lighting system. They provided me with the information to set up the environment in a seamless and easy to install way (and saved me money!). I love the style/design. I wish I had this all my life!

This works well as an accent light, and it integrated easily with my existing Hue setup. I added it to two other white lights in the room, and it dims and turns on and off in sync. The only thing I need to go into the individual light settings for is to change the temperature of the white light. The included bulb does not do other colors, but you could conceivably put a different bulb in the fixture. The fixture shape isn't the greatest, but it provides a consistent diffuse glow across the entire surface of the lamp. It sits flush on the table, so much of the light goes out and up (so consider that if you're planning to use it as a lamp for reading, etc). Good product, but make sure you have the right use case in mind.

I’m really impressed with the overall quality of this lamp. It’s easy to setup. Simply take the hand blown glass base, remove the bulb from the box, and screw in. Then pair it with your Philips Hub (I used and Amazon Echo Plus) and start using it. I couldn’t be happier. I have a side accent table that this sits perfectly on. The design allows the light to hit every angle. I’ve had several compliments from visiting friends and family. The ability to dim the light at night is also a plus in movie nights! My kids even love using Alexa to turn the light on when they go downstairs. Super impressed, and highly recommend. Just make sure you have the table space to place it.

This is a strange looking yet beautiful lamp. Setup was easy with the Hue app (you do need an existing Hue bridge or an Amazon Echo Plus with a built in hub). I initially thought this was a lamp similar to the Bloom, where the bulb is built in. But, this is a glass lamp with a socket so you can change out the bulb if you want. It comes with a white Hue bulb, which I switched for a multi-color bulb. This works well with scenes and routines (in the Hue app or can set up in the Alexa app). It looks really nice and does make a statement. I’d easily recommend this for the interesting design and Alexa integration.

First thing to know about this lamp is you will need to already have or purchase a Philips Hue Bridge that will act as the smart interface. This lamp is controllable via Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Nest and Wink via the Zigbee certification among others so smart home integration is easy and of course works with the Hue App. The frosted glass is top notch quality and diffuses the light perfectly throughout your living space. With a range of warm white to cool daylight you can taylor the lamp for whatever you are doing, reading, relaxing etc A great addition or start to smart home lighting.

I guess I was expecting a little more for a $100 table lamp. Basically you get a glass dome, power cord, and one white hue bulb. When you look at the cost of a single bulb is $30, the net cost of the dome and power cable is $70. This seems very high for what you actually get. You can purchase any table lamp, buy a $30 bulb, and have the same thing. I will say the dome is a heavy glass and well made. It does diffuse the light very well. Other than that, its hard to justify the $100 price tag for this lamp. If it ever goes on sale for less than $60, it would probably be worth it at that price.

I was under excited about this product. I was excited about the notion of a smart lamp. The package does not actually include the items needed to make it smart. It is basically the globe of a light and the light bulb. There is silicone on the globe so you can sit it flat on most surfaces. It is pretty bright but otherwise it is just a light without anything else.
