I Got Almost 5 On It

I love the bulbs themselves and the idea of smart lighting, when they standalone. However, the manner of practical application, in regards to smart home technology by the electronics industry, irks me a little. Mostly I take issue with the fact that us early adopters are essentially subsidizing R&D in a smart home tech race for these companies while simultaneously providing them free marketing for their products when we show them off or talk them up to our friends, family, and neighbors. After much analysis, review, and consideration I think the price is not justified. There must be a non-supply cost related reason for such inflated product prices. I've taken these apart, hub and bulbs; what's inside of them is not expensive and mostly cheap imports. All of this fragmented smart home tech cost a ton of money for little cross-compatibility, few customizations without third-party hard or software solutions, slow (risk-adverse, cost safe) industry development, and no guarantee of support or longevity for these products. We buy these items assuming much risk ourselves and some of these companies act as if we should be forever grateful for the most basic ROI they deliver us. But after the awe factor wears off, the moment you stop caring about impressing people by telling your Echo or Siri to change your living room lights to varying colors, you realize you're getting very little beyond promises and gimmicks in return for the high dollar-tag on much of the offerings within this tech sector. In addition, I find that the 3rd generation Hue Bulbs most obviously offers more colors. By this, I mean blues and greens are finally ACTUALLY blue and green...to the user's eye. Whereas the 2nd gen bulb's "blue" is more akin to purple and looks like a black light at night and the 2nd gen bulb's "green" is an ugly yellow-green color. However, by playing semantics by referring to arbitrary color spectrums not defined by true human sight/perception on the packaging of those bulbs and also by upselling a "more diverse spectrum than previous generation bulbs," I feel like I was slightly duped by Philips into buying those bulbs. I settled on them begrudgingly, knowing there are few worthy alternatives, only to find a few months later my preliminary concerns became a self-fulfilling prophecy in that I had to go buy 20 new bulbs for $49.99 each if I wanted matching colors in my rooms and in general to have the blue & green color options at all. There are no Philips-owned or sponsored programs currently to allow for discounted upgrades for early adopters, trade-ins, or any other pragmatic solutions benefiting both the return consumer and the company in terms of continued loyalty. Again, I understand the economy and how business works. Sony isn't going to just give me a new console every time they upgrade their products, same with Apple or Samsung and it's mobile devices. Albeit, Sony and Apple also have defined releases so consumers can choose which upgrades they participate in and what features they can and cannot live without. This also helps ease the pocketbook burden of buying generational tech that is constantly evolving on an exponential curve every 1-2 years. All in all, the bulbs are nice but companies like Philips can do better on setting their prices more fairly, offering some type of upgrade program or loyalty discounts, and increasing the product's native functionality, native customization options, as well as its industry-compatibility. Do this and you'll make even the most hypercritical buyers much more happy than your current model.

I've had several of these Hue bulbs for nearly a year now (just bought my 5th this past fall), and I absolutely love them. They're super-versatile and the color combinations are practically limitless. After purchasing one or more Hue bulbs, you should download the Hue app so you can assign names to the bulbs, set up rooms in which to use them, and either use preloaded color schemes or create your own. Personally, I have quite a few custom scenes created to match with the theme of various tv shows I watch (red & yellow for The Flash, different shades of green for Arrow, etc) as well as themes tailored to holidays. You can use the app to create routines so that the lights are on when you wake up early, on by the time you come home from work, off after you go to bed, etc. These bulbs are not recommended for enclosures as the enclosures can trap heat and potentially create a fire hazard. All my ceiling enclosures use standard non-Hue bulbs and are activated by wall switch, and I only use my Hue bulbs in several non-enclosed lamps throughout the house which I activate via the Hue app or voice command to my Google Home. Entering into the Hue ecosphere can be a little pricey at first, but luckily bulb & bridge bundles go on sale pretty often and fairly regularly so if you're concerned about the cost, wait a little and check back every so often to see if there's a bundle on sale. These light bulbs require the Philips Hue Bridge for full functionality.

These light bulbs are the best working smart lights out of all that are available from different brands to the variation of colors, to how great they work with the app as well as the smart switches that sync with them. There are no other lights that compare to the simplicity and function that they offer. They wont work without setting them up on the app however they are energy savers and super cool with the music apps to make them change color and strobe in different variations and cant forget the different presets on the app that give you awesome scenes such as sunsets as well as a million other variations that you can program them to. They have plenty of different apps to make them do different things but I only do the Phillip's app cause this app does most of the variations to choose from. The switches can be programmed to set your scenes based on how many times you press the buttons. Completely 100% programmable to your choosing of how they work. I love when I get home, how they automatically turn on with geofencing and turn off when i leave without touching anything. Absolutely for smart things lovers. Also can be controlled with some logitech controllers as well.

So I started my Hue adventure with a couple of white bulbs in select fixtures of my basement. This quickly escalated to a full-blown addiction and I have since purchased over 30 colored bulbs and replaced every fixture in my basement with a colored hue bulb. The colors from these bulbs are rich in dynamic. I also like some of the pre-programmed scenes. I purchased these to use along with an echo dot. While I rave about these bulbs I am not completely pleased with the overall integration of the Hue app and other lighting apps. For example in its current state I cannot change the color of the bulbs with the echo dot without a fair amount of app programming with non-native third-party apps. I use Yonomi to set up scenes and then find those with the echo to trigger the scene change. The problem with this at the time is that the app only has predetermined colors and is quite a bit of work when you have a basement full of these lights. To set up scenes and then find those with the echo to trigger the scene change. The problem with this at the time is that the app only has predetermined colors and is quite a bit of work when you have a basement full of these lights. However I can easily control the color of the lights with my iPhone. At some point I'm sure the iPhone/HomeKit integration will be streamlined into the echo or some similar functionality but at this time that type of control is a bit clunky. Another app I like to use is an app called Thorlight. This app can set up animation with the lights as well as other cool tricks like strobe lights. The kids love it but again you cannot trigger these effects through the echo. Overall I couldn't be happy with these bulbs and continue to replace other fixtures in my home with them.

I bought the regular bulb starter kit on Black Friday and decided to pick up one of these also given they were on sale. I put it in a cheap floor lamp and I was not all that impressed with it and almost returned it. I decided to try in a regular table lamp, with a shade and liked it much better. When I saw they were even cheaper on Cyber Monday I picked up another. SO this is what I have noticed makes the experience better.. These bulbs look great in lamps with a shade, preferably white, like the bedroom They work better in pairs- 2 bulbs in a room to evenly distribute light. Not as bright as the regular $15 bulbs- so these are better for ambiance or accent lighting, not the main light source in a room. I really like the color of the “nightlight” much better than the regular bulbs. Its fun to change the colors… but its not really useful..You would need a few to light up a room in color for a party.. Red seems to be the only color bright enough to reach across the whole room. Blue is the only other color that “looks good.” Most of the others seem to have a lot of “white” in them. I feel the 2 pack white ambiance for $50 is much better and practical than 1 of these for $50. The shades of white are worth the extra $10, not sure if colors are worth $25 on top of that. For roughly $30 sale price these are pretty cool and I am thinking about putting them in some funky Ikea lamps and replacing the ones in the bedroom with the white ambiance.

For the most part, smart lights are for dummies. The problem with these type of lights is the control. If you use this in place of a light with a wall switch (like overhead lighting) then you'll have to have your cell phone handy all the time, connect to Alexa or Google Home, or shell out more cash for battery powered and wall mounted Philips switch to put on the wall next to the old switch. if you switch the light off, goodbye smart bulb. You have to switch the light back on, wait for the bulb to boot up and then control it with the above mentioned stuff. Plus, you'll need to buy a Philips Hue Hub to control this (even with Alexa or whatnot). So, if you plan to do your whole house with these lights, don't. Not to mention that at over $30 per bulb, you'd go broke fitting a whole house with these. That being said, these can be cool accessories to spruce up your place with a splash of color. I use this as ambient light behind my TV. I don't need it to see and it won't get switched off by someone leaving the room or whatnot. It have it connected to my Harmony Hub so it will turn on Red when I am using Nintendo, Blue with PS4, Green with Xbox, Purple with Roku and so on. It's a cool effect. I was given a Philips Hub or else I wouldn't have bothered, but it's nice. For the right use, worth it. For practical lighting uses, don't get it.

Addition to Starter Kit White & Multi Color

After purchasing the starter kit for my home which included 4 light bulbs, I had decided it was not enough. I had to go back and purchase another for another room. Due to the ability to control brightness and type of colors including various white degrees, one bulb can "light up a room where it may take two, possibly three, (depending on your room make up and wattage) based on the setting and light gradient you want at that time. I am happy and the hue lighting system continues to pleasantly surprise me. As a side note, I have my system synced with google home so as a "shortcut" I have discovered that if I am locating in a room and there is no need to change a location name, I can tell google home to "sync all devices" and it will add it into the automation so I do not have to go through the beginning setup when I originally set up my starter kit. Adding additional lights is just like changing regular light bulbs. The price is reasonable and the value makes it's a great buy.

As many others have stated, these Gen 3 Hue bulbs are producing much richer colors than the Gen 2 bulbs which I started with! In my opinion, a $5 cost savings to buy Gen 2 bulbs is not worth the savings with the added color production you get out of Gen 3. There are a few things I would want for this to be a perfect bulb. 1) Default Color Setting -- the ability to set a default color / warmth / brightness for every time the light is turned on without using a Routine. While you can set these if you create a Routine in the Hue app, I'd prefer a default that, when someone uses the wall switch, the light would turn on with. Ideally this would be fixed with a Hue app/bridge software update. 2) Dimmable Bulbs -- these bulbs are not dimmable via standard techniques. They are only dimmable via RF such as via the Hue app, the Hue wall switch or automated home hub (ie. SmartThings). Buying a GE z-wave wall switch or even a standard wall switch with dimming will not work with these. Hoping Gen 4 would allow for this functionality OR have a Hue-based switch that isn't as unsightly as the current. Here's my setup if it helps with understanding my review. 10 Hue Gen 3 color ambiance bulbs 4 Hue Gen 2 color ambiance 4 Hue Gen 2 white ambiance bulbs, 2 Hue white bulbs, Hue Hub (Gen 2), SmartThings Hub (Gen 2) 2x GE z-wave wall switches with dimming (not for Hue-bulbs), 4x GE z-wave in-wall receptacles various SmartThings sensors

Picked up three of the bulbs on sale for $100. At that price, I was able to justify with my wife the desire to make this purchase. At $50 a bulb I couldn’t even convince myself. These bulbs are in the ceiling fan lights in my son’s bedroom. They are also (along with the Hue starter kit I purchased) my first foray into the world of smart bulbs. My son ALWAYS either leaves his lights on or turns them off at the switch, turning the ceiling fan off. Now he (we) can make sure the fan stays on and the lights get turned off. We are just now getting into the Echo Dot, so this will help keep lights off that need to be kept off. I also splurged and got him the color changing lights so that he can play with the color while he games. We can also change the lights to a setting that’s better suited for reading. This feature is one that I am excited about. I can say for certain that as we upgrade our house throughout the year that we won’t put the colored lights in every fixture, but these bulbs are definitely fun to have in a couple of fixtures or lamps to create a fun ambiance.

These lights are absolutely amazing. I debated getting them for some time since they are obviously a bit pricey in relation to other traditional lighting. The demonstration they have set up in Best Buy made the lights appealing, but after moving into the 1st home I've owned last year which has a modern theme to it, I'd say these lights are the biggest game changer I've purchased. They completely change the entire mood to your living spaces, and there seems to be a setting no matter what activity you are doing or what mood you are feeling. You can control the brightness and color of the lights for each individual light, but also group together lights labeled under an entire room. You can control the lights through an app on your phone (and there are several additional apps for Hue that are great extensions; such as "Hue Fireworks") although there is the option to purchase a dimmer switch and a switch with presets. Probably the coolest feature is linking these lights with personal assistant devices such as Google Home or Alexa, where you can then have complete command over every individual light/ room/ entire lighting throughout your house with voice control. Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla would be thrilled by this unique, convenient, exciting, and genius invention.

Like a lot of smart technology, it seems like a gimic at first. I have the Hue and starter kit with HUB and the smart LED strip lighting. They all work real well together and I primarily use them with Alexa. I dislocated my shoulder, so turning the switch on the lamp next to my bed hurts when turning, but now I can just go "Alexa, Lights Off", and they all turn off. The voice control is fair too for changing color, dimming lights, etc. Also, they are LED and use less power. I have one in a 3-Way lamp, so I left the lamp at the highest setting, and then one on another lamp. So far in the month I've had them, I can see the value. They are a little expensive, but go on sale often. I'd love to say Phillips is a name, but they have the technology down pretty well (I'm an Electrical Engineer, so it's nice to see a well designed product). I will continue to buy into this line and it integrates well into everything else. I recommend this for sure if they are on sale.

What can I say? We are getting spoiled with technology today. Before you buy these bulbs, you’ll need to buy a starter kit that includes a hue connecting hub, or buy a hub separately. Once everything is synced, the fun begins. I have a Google Home device and 4 Hue lights throughout the house. I like that you can control every light in a room at once (with Home or the Hue app) or individually. For example, my wife and I have two lights above our headboard in the bedroom. One light carries my name and the other my wife’s. My wife usually nods off before me so we turn hers off and dim mine to a nice 20%. I also like to set the living room light to a Hue that matches the mood of the tv show or movie we are watching. Watching Stranger Things? Set it to a deep red, of course. Seahawks game? Lime green. Google Home and the Hue app alone only take you so far. Download the IFTTT app and you can configure your lights to do a lot more. My lights now flash when it starts to rain. I yell, “Hey Google, Sea!” and she responds with “Hawks!” while turning the lights green. Good fun. Anyway, if you’re on the fence about buying them, just indulge. They are convenient, fun and easy.

The Product is great. Although my product came in the mail one of them was broken. So when I went to the store in Yonkers ny and went to customer service desk there was at least 3 people which seemed like supervisors and one other employee who was trying to help me, but when he would ask one of the three supervisors a question they would look at me and him and keep talking. He explained to me they cannot take a defective item, that I would have to send it back to Best Buy online. I said that's fine but i kept getting dirty looks when i was asking for guidance on efficiency of returning and exchanging. One of the supervisors then decided to yell towards me approx 10 feet away yelling we don't take defective items call Best Buy. I stated ok but I'm here now and she just turned around seemingly annoyed and continued to talk to their other employees. Nevertheless I got my refund instead of what would have been an exchange and kept it moving. I have been shopping at Best Buy for many years and never received this kind of disregard and unwillingness to help, from a store supervisor no less. I will be closing my Best Buy card and will be Taking my business elsewhere from now on. Oh yea the product is awesome. Highly recommended!

I've had Hue white bulbs in our house for a about a year now and decided to get B30 bulbs for our front porch. I was amazed at how bright those lights were on our porch and at Christmas time I changed the color to red on one and green on the other, that's what prompted me to get the Hue Multicolor lights for our living room. The 'blue/white' color is much brighter than the original white only lights I've had in our lamps for a year. I'm too old to be having our lights synced with our music so they change color with the beat of the music, I'd probably get dizzy, lol, but that might be of interest to those younger than me. I really enjoy being able to turn on our lights when we are out for dinner or visiting friends and it starts to get dark while we are out. We also have an Amazon Echo and being able to say "Alexa turn off the porch" when I get into bed and realize that I left the porch lighst on is very helpful since I'm disabled. I have recommended these Phillips Hue Lights to everyone who comes to visit and would recommend these lights to anyone who has a smartphone and wants the convenience of controlling your lights at different times and in different rooms every day, especially when you're away from home.

My apartment's lights are all Philips Hue. They're all the white bulbs except 2 which are in my living room, and they are these White and Color Ambiance bulbs and well, I just don't use the color. None of the "canned" scenes are in any way pleasant or relaxing and I've tinkered a tiny bit and really can't find any color settings that are at all appealing, so I only use the default white setting. I also find the Siri and Alexa integration extremely poor and for some reason the "turn on the lights when I come home" feature stopped working at some point over the summer. To summarize, I've pretty much stopped using these as "smart" devices controlled from phones and assistants like Alexa and have reverted back to using the light switches, tho I occasionally use the app to dim them. I am a gadget guy, but these just don't provide additional utility above the light switch and when they go, I'll go back to dumb bulbs.

Along with this device, I have invested heavily in the Philips Hue ecosystem so I will be a bit biased. Though the price is a bit expensive per bulb, It is great at how well such devices are controlled via apps and even voice control like Alexa and Siri. All of these control methods overlap yet disrupt the other rarely. The bulb itself and a grand improvement over 2nd gen multicolor bulbs. The fact it does cool and warm whites AND color makes me want to install these all over the house. Again, the cost keeps that from being effective (maybe eventually...). Fits and standard American outlet, 15W which is fine for lamps and even smaller rooms but anything too large you may need multiple bulbs. Personally, I tend to light rooms with cheaper Philips white bulbs and use these for accents. I am quite happy with how my network of automated lights are coming along. A Philips hub is needed and is very controllable by many apps and assistants. Besides the price, my only caveat is that the app is clunky. I find that I use HomeKit almost exclusively for these bulbs with a little help from iHome and iDevices apps. Philips Hue app is a last ditch effort.

Smart homes are becoming a natural thing now and more and more people are jumping on that boat. If you have never experienced Phillips Hue, this is the way to go, it is easier than most other smart light bulbs and it has a huge range of color and just easy to use. I have used these for Halloween decorations, home theater setup, and more! Yes they can be expensive, but the joy they bring is worth it! In my case I have the light strip along with 2 light bulbs synced into one room, and have made some dynamic setup. I also have one in my baby's room which is setup with a wireless remote so I can dim the lights when I put her to bed easily without making too much noise. I have some more in the office which are super nice for studying or reading or even gaming! You cannot go wrong with any Hue purchase you make.

I already had bought a Hue starter kit containing a bridge and three color bulbs. I was happy enough with it that I bought another color bulb and a white ambiance bulb. All these bulbs were second generation. I was generally pleased with them, but I noticed the colors looked much better when I set them to shades of reds and purples. Greens and blues were pastel shades that looked washed-out. This bulb was my first purchase after Philips debuted the third generation color bulbs. The box sports a logo on the front promising "richer colors" — and I am happy to report that the colors really are more vibrant, especially the blues and greens. If you are beginning a new Hue system or adding to an existing one, I strongly suggest choosing the third-generation bulbs.

These work great. I like sitting on my chair controlling the lighting from my phone. I really like adjusting the percentage illumination to get the perfect ambience when viewing movies. My one gripe is that sometimes changes to the lighting can take a little too long, but I attribute this to my phone being slow. I will look into buying a hardware device with a button to turn on directly without having to always use my phone. Otherwise, the color changes are very fun and my daughter especially gets a kick out of adjusting the lighting color of the room. Setup was a little bit tedious because the lights required a download for updating which took about an hour. Adding an additional light also requires resetting all of the scene settings I have setup in the HomeKit App. My apple tv serves as a hub so that I can turn lights on and off when I'm not home, which I like to do to make potential thieves think that someone is always home. These lights are fun once everything is ready to go. :)

I bought these as additional lights to go with my existing Phillips hue system. The lights are easy to install, generation 3 lights are significantly brighter than prior generation 2. Love the fact that the lights work both with my Nest thermostat, and the amazon Echo. Just a note. I bought 4 of these lights all in the generation 3 box. 2 of the lights were not generation 3 they were generation 2. I was glad that Best Buy replaced them with no issues. Make sure that the seal on the box has not been opened, if it is opened, or even pulled up, and stuck back down. Do not buy that box, that means a customer has bought that box before, replaced the generation 3 bulbs with their older generation 2 bulbs, and took the box back to the store for a refund,
