Been a blade shaver for decades

I have been a blade shaver for the better part of 40 years. I used an electric shaver a long time ago and it always irritated my neck so I switched to blades. Now that I have had the opportunity to try this new electric from Philips/Norelco I will probably not go back. This gives a nice close shave.(comparable to a blade) with less irritation. I downloaded the app that goes with the shaver and there is a lot of good information on it regarding shaving and if you pair it to your phone it will also record your shaving habits and tell you how long you shaved and if you used the correct procedure to get the best shave. It has been interesting seeing my length of shaving time and correctness of procedure go up and down. Hard to believe you can pair your razor to your phone. I have not had the occasion to use it in the shower to try the wet shave portion as I do have a partial beard so having a mirror is essential to make sure I am not shaving where I shouldn't be. I blow it off after each use and put it in the cleaner (provided) once a week. It does a good job of cleaning the shave heads and also recharging the shaver. The cleaning solution does have to be replenished it says monthly, but I will see how long before it is depleted. A new 3 pack of solution is available at a relatively cheap price. The only thing I don't care for is the cleaning station has a fairly large footprint and takes up a lot of space on the bathroom counter so I put it down below when not using you just have to be careful to not tip it a lot or the cleaning solution will spill out. This also does come with an attractive travel case for the razor. Overall it gives a good close shave. I do feel my beard is a little longer at the end of the day compared to a blade but nothing that is objectionable. I will see this summer how it is as that is when I used to get the most irritation from the electric razor but if i can use this one wet I think it will really help. I would recommend this razor as the electrics have come a long way over the years.

The Bluetooth and self cleaning tank that it comes with isn't needed but raises the price. the shave is OK nothing to brag about. The blade speed is too slow for me and i have to shave for an extended time to get a clean shave.

So I would say this razor is amazing but there’s some issues with the manufacture I had to return it under warranty once. Now the new one is already going bad I believe this is a manufacture issue, don’t get it.

I’ve been using electric shavers since I started shaving. My first razor was actually a Norleco rotary shaver, but I discovered Braun foil shavers and never looked back. My Braun is several years old and starting to show some age, so when the opportunity came along to try this one I decided to give rotary shavers another try. This is Philips Norelco’s latest “midrange” rotary shaver. The exact model is 7940 for those who like to know those things. Opening the box revealed the shaver in the travel case, the charging/cleaning base, a cleaning cartridge, power cord, and the trimmer attachment. Everything is kind of oddly packed, be sure to open every little box and part of the packaging to ensure everything is out. The shaver itself has the iconic three floating rotary heads, pulling the head unit out of the razor allows for the trimmer attachment to be attached instead, which is not as convenient as other shavers that have integrated trimmers that pop up with the flip of a lever switch. A single power button and some simple backlit LED indicators give the user some idea of what is going on with the razor. The back of the razor is that soft-touch rubberized plastic, and the face of the razor is plastic. The plastic and the seam lines to the back grip feel kind of cheap, which is unfortunate for a razor in this price range. I also found the grip to be almost slippery and require several shifts in grip as I used it. The shave itself is actually quite good. It covers a large area and adjusts to the contours of your face well. It also does a good job on the neck area, which for me is a trouble area as my facial hair grows flush to the skin and goes in different directions. I prefer a dry shave but this one can be used wet and with shaving gels, as long as it is rinsed before being cleaned in the base. The base is straightforward with a couple of indicator LEDs to confirm power, charging, and cleaning status. The power cord goes in at an odd 45 degree angle and is keyed to only go in one way, so it took a little bit of trial and error to get it plugged in. To clean the shaver, you need to tap the power indicator light, it isn’t a physical button. It also doesn’t disinfect the razor, only cleans and lubricates it. In order to adjust the shaving speed (sensitivity) if the shaver head, you must use the app. The app is..weird. I had a bad feeling when it was called “GroomTribe”, and the app completely met my expectations as pretty strange and unintuitive. It attempts to set up your sensitivity settings by asking some questions and “guiding” you through your shaves. This is set up in a fake chat-like question and answer session that might appeal to teenage boys getting their first real facial hair, but I found it to be unnecessary and pretty silly. I just want a shaver to..shave. It set mine to the middle power option, which was underpowered for my thick beard and caused the shaver to drag on my face. The shaver also appears to have an accelerometer in it so it can provide “guidance” during the guided shave option. This is frankly ridiculous. It keeps telling me to try making smaller circles. I adjust and make very small circles, and the advice stays there. I make bigger ones and it likes those for a bit before not liking them again. The only good thing about the guided shave is that I could set the power back to normal and actually effectively cut my facial hair. At least the app doesn’t force you to make an account and give away personal information just to use it. To cap off my experience with the app, it told me that the shaver needed a firmware update (firmware is the best invention of all time, it allows companies to ship products half finished and then finish them later), which it cautions you not to leave the app or turn off the shaver, while letting you know that the shaver won’t be usable during the update. I kicked it off, looked over a couple of minutes later, and the app had crashed out to the home screen. This is the exact opposite of what you want an app to do during firmware updates! Fortunately, it appears to have actually updated the shaver and it still worked fine. Overall, this is a shaver that will provide a quality shave. The required use of an app to do simple things like adjust the power of the shaver is unnecessary and annoying. It might be better if the app actually added value, but instead it just adds complexity and drags down an otherwise excellent shave.

Best electric shave ever for sensitive skin!

I have been shaving off and on with blades and several brands of electric shavers, to include Norelcos, for 5 decades, and can now state that Norelco has nailed it. A shaver that is the least abrasive and best deals with sensitive skin. I like the closeness of a blade shave, but the nicks and cuts cause me to always go back to electric shavers. Though electric shavers do not nick and cut, they do abrade my face. I change directions, use pre-electric shave products, and all help, but do not eliminate the problem of my sensitive facial skin areas. This shaver is just flat out the least abrasive of any I have ever used. I believe Norelco set about to accomplish this using several technologies, and they accomplished their objective. The shaver is also a standout in other regards: Long battery life (and quick charging), a cleaning system that makes maintaining the shaver an effortless piece of cake. Their system cleans, lubricates, and drys the shaver with the touch of a button. The only negative I had regarding the shaver was the lack of inclusion of a cover to protect the heads when traveling and the shaver is in its pouch. Norelco charges extra for the cover to protect the shaver. Such policy on a luxury shaver is unnecessary.

Thank you for writing us a feedback about your Norelco shaver. How unfortunate to hear that you are not a fan of the product, and that it did not give you satisfying results. We highly recommend reading the user manual once again to learn about how you can maximize the use of the device and its attachments. Great Product, Still Might Not Replace Blades

Unboxing: The box is very nice and sturdy, however removing the individual pieces of the system was cumbersome as each piece was wrapped inside its own wrapper of cardboard, to the point of humorous. But once unboxed the system consists of the shaver, carrying case, power supply, trimmer tool and self-cleaning base station. Setup: If the shaver arrives with a charged battery, you can begin shaving immediately. It will run for a complete shave on as little as a 5 min charge, but full charging should take about an hour and will give you numerous shaves. Where this shaver differs from others is that you can connect it to the Philips GroomTribe app on your smart device. While everything these days usually centers around connected app features, one thing I felt was a drawback to this system is that you cannot change the shaver settings unless you are connected to the app. The shaver comes pre-set to the “sensitive” setting, but offers Normal, Sensitive and Extra Sensitive. If you wanted to change to Normal or Extra Sensitive, you have to connect to the app first. you cannot change a simple setting like that on the device itself. Seems kind of silly. The base station is nice and robust and the shaver fits nice and securely in order to charge and also self clean after each use. One thing I did struggle with at first, is that the power supply is the same for the shaver and the base station, the input port on the base station is angled upwards almost 60 degrees or so. I didn’t notice that at first, so the power supply did not just easily plug in as I expected. Once I noticed they situated the power input at such a weird angle, it connected just fine. the system comes with a cleaning solution cartridge and that should last about 12 months. App: The was very polished and easy to navigate. While it mostly contains content articles about shaving and FAQs, it does offer a My Shave evaluation where the app tracks your shaves and can suggest improvements based on your motions and length of shave time. All of this is geared toward getting the best possible shave and eliminating irritation. So far so good in my use of this. Shaving: If you’ve used an electric shaver before, there is nothing new to see here. If this is your first electric shaver, you’ll notice how easy and comfortable it is to get going. I have used the system for a few dry shaves and a few wet shaves and I must admit, I love the wet shaves much better. Dry shaves are great for a rush or getting a quick maintenance in, but for a full shave, I much prefer to use my shave cream and water. Overall the shave is comfortable and quiet. I have not had any issues with pulling or knicking. I have noticed some irritation when using dry, which I’ve always experienced using an electric shaver, but setting the shaver to Extra Sensitive and using wet with shave cream, the irritation went away. The only thing I notice is that it’s still not as close a shave as a blade razor, and struggles to get close against the grain or around my jawline/chin. I also need to use my blade to shave my upper lip, as the Norelco doesn’t do a good enough job of getting that area close. Self-Cleaning: This part I love, because once done, all you do is place the shaver in the base station, snap it in place and set it and forget it. The system will clean the shaver and leave it dry and smelling fresh. Overall: Very nice system with adequate shave quality but for me, using this exclusively isn’t an option yet. I find myself still reaching for my blade razor to finish my shave and go over areas to get a smooth, close feel. Where this is great is the ability to shave wet or dry, and grab a quick shave when a razor isn’t a good option. And being able to keep this clean with almost no effort, that’s definitely worth some bonus points.

It's been many years since I've used an electric shaver; around 14 I would say. I remember how an electric shaver always allowed me to shave without having to worry about creams, cartridges, or more importantly, having to wash/dry my face and neck afterwards. When my trusty electric shaver died oh so many years ago, I decided to switch back to standard replacement cartridge razors. Personally, I always thought that straight blades gave a closer and overall better shave than electric razors at the cost of convenience. I really hadn't considered switching back to an electric shaver as I just didn't feel like they had "advanced" over the years; not to say that cartridge razors have come that far. Enter the Philips Norelco SmartClick shaver. This shaver has provided me with a much better shave than I remember getting with my old electric model. To me, what really sets this model apart from my previous shaver, is it's included cleaning/charging system. Although it takes up quite a bit of space on the counter, the charging/cleaning station helps to renew and greatly prolong the lifetime of the blades. A set of dirty, dull blades does not offer a great user experience. Once a week, I can just pop this shaver into it's base, push the button, and the next time I grab the shaver, it's as good as brand new. I'm confident that the blades will not need to be physically replaced for quite some time. What has greatly improved with my shaving experience is that I can now shave in the shower safely. I'm as good as blind without my glasses on, which makes shaving with a traditional razor in the shower difficult, even with a mirror. I would constantly have to re-shave areas that I had missed with a traditional razor. This usually provided for some nice razor burn on my sensitive skin. This shaver allows me to go over my entire face, multiple times when necessary, without the fear of razor burn. Of course, I can also just shave in front of the mirror (outside of the shower) as well without having to wash residual cream off of my face. So why only 4 stars? While I'm quite fluent with connected devices and mobile applications, I was dissatisfied to learn that some of the shavers settings could only be modified from within the app. This isn't a complete deal-breaker, as I can't imagine that I would adjust the settings all that often anyways, but it's still strange to me that in 2020, Philips couldn't provide an alternate solution (like ONE more button on the shaver...). Either way, the convenience and comfort that this shaver provides as a shaver is well worth that minor inconvenience. Overall, I'm quite satisfied with this shaver and it has, once again, converted me off of expensive (over-priced), disposable cartridges.

I have been a loyal Norelco customer for over 50 years. All of my other shavers have lasted 3 years and some much longer. This one was the most expensive and only lasted 8 months. It did not shave any better than my other Norelco's. I would not recommend this shaver to anyone.

I was using the Philips Norelco 6940LC (corded only) for about 12 years, that electric shaver was built like a tank and still works. The reason I wanted to replace the previous Norelco 6940LC was because I felt it was not efficient on cutting the hair even with new blades. What I mean it takes a lot of strokes in one area to get a close shave to the skin, saying this it takes a while to shave your whole beard. This new Norelco 7900 takes the shaving speed to a new level. Now is a lot faster to shave and with lot less strokes you can get a close shave. With less strokes also means less skin irritation as well. I usually shave dry since my old shaver only worked on dry face. This new one you can shave in either dry or wet face. It also very easy to clean. You have the option to clean by hand below the faucet or use the included smart clean attachment. The smart clean requires you to purchase a cleaning cartridge. The unit came with one but base on the manual it says that one cartridge shall last about 3 months if you use the smart clean once a week. The cartridges don’t seem to be that expensive which is a good thing. The manual also says that with about five minutes of charge will give you enough juice for one shave which shall be great in case you are in a hurry and you forgot to charge your unit. The only downside to this type of equipment is the battery. From what I see is not “user replaceable” it has an screw on the back of the shaver, but I believe it was not meant to be user replaceable. Since the unit is new it is unknown at this point the longevity of the battery and if it is not user replaceable that means when the battery life reaches its end the whole unit reach its end as well. The unit cannot be operated while charging like a corded unit even if you use it dry. This unit have Bluetooth connectivity to connect the shaver to a phone. Thru the phone you can adjust a few settings that you can’t adjust on the machine itself (ex. shave sensitivity). To me the Bluetooth connectivity is a plus but I don’t think I need it. The unit is a little pricy but does a good job and comes with the smart clean system that other razors don’t have. The big question here is do I recommend this electric shaver? If you are a person that use traditional razors(cheap or expensive ones) and after using the razors your skin is all the time irritated and you get constant bloody cuts. The answer is an absolute yes. Is very rare that I get a cut with this electric razor. If you are a person that have an old electric razor and don’t feel that is doing a good job on getting you shave in time. The answer is yes as well.

20 years ago I tried an electric shaver. I cut my throat and swore them off, so having enough faith in technology to try again was a big leap forward for me. The smart phone app connection via bluetooth appeals to the geek in me. I figured 20 years of shaving and I wouldn't have much to improve upon given the fact that my girlfriend says my face is smooth as a baby's butt with my current shaving routine. Surprise, Surprise, the app told me I received a 46% on my shaving technique which makes sense considering I cut my neck, throat and almost nicked my cheek with this thing. After a few guided shaves I saw good progress and no more blood, but I still haven't been able to reach 100%. I'm not getting quite a close a shave as with a razor but for me I barely can grow facial hair so that's not really a problem. The time saved from no longer needing to use shaving cream makes up for any gaps. I love that the unit came with a travel case, it's a small thing yes, but very useful for someone like me who travels frequently. Overall I like it. And so does my girlfriend (but that's probably mostly because blue is her favorite color and this thing is blue).

A smart shaver? Yes! This is a smart shaver! The Bluetooth connection was a breeze to set up. Once your cell-phone and shaver are connected just follow the in-app directions. The shaver will adjust to the settings that you choose. I chose manscape although I am a female, and I don't shave my face. However, this shaver works great on legs and underarms. Highly recommend.

I just bought this shaver yesterday & it left NO NICKS on my neck or face! Don't forget, I STILL have another THREE WEEKS to let my face get used to shaving with this unit! I am so looking forward to dumping manual blades for good & saving a LOT of money on replacement blades. I only have to buy the new $40 heads every TWO YEARS & the $12 cleaning cartridge just 4X a year. Great investment right off the bat & this is the BEST shaver I have ever used on my very sensitive skin!
