My husband says he prefers it to the Freebird FlexSeries he was gifted. Good for use in the shower, battery gets you several shaves before needing to recharge, and it's pretty easy to clean.

A comfortable, dedicated dome-shaving upgrade

My husband has been using a set of clippers to shave his head for year. Over the years we have replaced the product, paying far more than necessary because he doesn’t need a high-powered product or accessories for hair he doesn’t have. Plus, shaving the back of his head with the clippers was awkward and hit or miss. Oftentimes he would ask me to do it.
With that in mind, I got the Philips Norelco Head Shaver Pro 5000 to try out. There are two levels of the Head Shaver Pro, and 5000 is the lower of the two. While the shaver is the same, what each comes with is different along with the price.
My husband was very impressed with this dedicated head shaver and is happily retiring his clippers for the reasons I describe below.
To start, he found it incredibly comfortable to hold. The ergonomic design fit naturally into his palm. Even more, you can “cup” the shaver between the handle and the shaving head for an extra close grip. This makes it easier to navigate the neck and the tricky area behind the head. It’s lightweight, too, so shaving doesn’t turn into a wrist workout or contortion.
Performance-wise, it delivers a close shave with little to no irritation. The four shaving heads glide smoothly over one’s dome. You can do a wet or dry shave. Because it's waterproof, you can shave in the shower if that’s your routine.
The battery life is fairly high for this product: a 60-minute runtime on a single charge, and it only takes about an hour to recharge. There’s also a handy feature where a quick five-minute charge gives you enough power for a five-minute shave which is ideal if you forgot to charge it. Indicator lights tell you when the battery is low and when charging is complete.
The maintenance is fairly simple and should be adhered to. The flip-top design makes it easy to rinse the shaving heads under water. It also comes with a cleaning brush for better upkeep. The directions go into detail about a monthly thorough cleaning so you can keep it at peak performance.
It packs well if you travel. The 5000 series comes with a soft pouch that keeps everything contained so you don’t open your suitcase to find hair trimmings in your undies. It also comes with a protective cap, USB-A cable, and a small cleaning brush. There is a two-year warranty for peace of mind.
There are a couple of downsides. The travel lock is useful once you understand it, but if you don’t, it can be confusing when the shaver suddenly won’t turn on. The key is to hold the power button for three seconds to activate or remove the lock. Also, there’s no USB power adaptor included. You will have to supply that to get it to charge or you won’t be able to use it. That is the reason I rated this the Philips Norelco Head Shaver Pro 5000 a 4 instead of a 5.
Be sure to read the instructions that come with the head shaver. They offer valuable tips such as:
• If your hair is longer than two inches, pre-trim before shaving.
• Shave in the direction of hair growth to reduce irritation.
• Don’t press down hard—let the shaver do the work.
• Clean regularly to maintain smooth performance and extend the life of the heads.
Overall, the Philips Norelco Head Shaver Pro 5000 is user-friendly, gentle on the scalp, and built for the unique contours of the head. If you want a clean, close shave without fuss or razor burn, then this one hits the mark.

I used this product, and it works exactly as described: clean shave, gentle on the skin, and easy to handle thanks to its ergonomic design. I already own a couple of Philips Norelco grooming kits, so when I searched for a head shaver, I knew I could trust the brand. Their products have always shown long lifespans, consistent battery performance, and solid build quality reinforced by an extended warranty. This model is no exception: it fully charges in about an hour and delivers many smooth shaves per charge.
The size of the shaver fits perfectly in my hand. It's compact, not bulky, and ergonomically shaped for easy access to both the front and back of the head. The entire process is straightforward, taking less than three minutes from start to finish, and the results are excellent.
The blades, mounted on a flexible head, adapt naturally to the curves of the skull. I have very sensitive skin, and I can confirm the shave was smooth and irritation-free.
Three additional highlights I appreciated:
1.- Easy to clean: Whether using the included brush for a dry clean or rinsing with warm water (yes, it’s water-resistant), the blades come out spotless.
2.- Travel-friendly: The kit includes a plastic head protector and a small travel pouch. I also appreciate the thoughtful “Travel Lock” feature that prevents the shaver from accidentally turning on during travels, a common issue that can drain the battery or damage blades.
3.- Extended warranty: After registering the device on the Philips website, I received a 5 (FIVE) year extended guarantee. It’s great to see a manufacturer stand so confidently behind their product.
One additional note: the kit includes the traditional Philips power cord (with the two-hole connector) but no power adapter. I hope future models will adopt a standard USB-C charging option for even greater convenience.
Overall, this is an excellent choice if you’re in the market for a reliable, easy-to-use, and travel-ready head shaver.

Item is good, but not as good as I had hoped. Used on arms and chest, pulls a little and if you have a little sweat it becomes more difficult to remove hair.

SUMMARY: This is an very good shaver that cuts well and smoothly. Maintenance is excellent. Instructions are good. I do recommend it. However, for the cost of this package, the travel pouch should simply be better.
DETAILS:
I jumped at the opportunity to get this when I had the chance. I have a rotary head shaver, but I shave my head more than half the time away from home so I wanted another one for my locker or for when I am traveling. The Philips Norelco Head Shaver Pro 5000 provided about the same closeness in shaving - wet or dry. This is not a small or lightweight shaver but it is not big or heavy either. It does provide a shave that may be a tad more comfortable. The 5000 allows you to use it while "cupping" the razor - holding it between your index and middle fingers with your hand between the body and the shaving head. That is nice. Also nice is that, in addition to removing the entire head for cleaning (with water or the small brush), is the fact that you can remove each of the four individual cutters for cleaning and maintenance. Just be careful to put them back in their original spots since they are matching sets according to the manual.
Speaking of the manual - it is excellent with good detail and readable. The PDF version of the manual is easily found and downloadable on the Philips web site - as it should be.
What I find deficient is the travel pouch. It is simply a bag made of a very thin cloth material with a flimsy drawstring to close it. It is not zippered. There is no rigidity to it; therefore, it does not protect the shaver whatsoever. At this price (or frankly, at even a lower price point), a better travel pouch or case should have been included. You could purchase the more expensive Head Shaver Pro 7000 to obtain a sturdy travel case (and in fairness, according to the specs, the 7000 also provides 30 minutes more of shaving time and a rinsing station), but you shouldn't have to. That is the main reason I can't justify giving this five stars. Also note that you only get a USB cable without a power adapter, and the charging end on the razor is proprietary - not USB. This also factored into dropping a star.

If you are a fellow head-shaver, you know the struggle...finding the right tool for the job is almost like searching for your "white whale". You need something that will stay charged up, work quickly, shave down to the scalp cleanly, and ideally, have it work in the shower...
This shaver does all of that.
I've yet to need to charge it for a second time, and have used it for 4 shaving sessions - so I'm very impressed with the battery life. I've yet to acquire any nicks or cuts, nor do I find myself going over the same spot on my head over and over again. It doesn't seem to have any issues moving between different areas of my head either (top of scalp, behind my ears, or my neck). And, it even works great in the shower! Any time I'm not having to clean up little hairs in the sink or elsewhere around the bathroom is a plus too.
The only minor annoyance with this shaver is the fact that the included charging adapter uses USB-A and not USB-C...when I got it out of the box, I had to search high and low around the house for a charging brick that would accept USB-A. I ended up using a port from my laptop... It would be great if there was an included charging brick (or if it used USB-C like everything else) -but since I've only had to charge it once so far, the annoyance is minor.

As a long-time multi-blade razor user, I never thought I would enjoy a powered shaver. However this product really surprised me. I don't think it would ever fully replace my razors, but it's a good addition to the group.
Pros
Build/ design - It is obvious that the team put a lot of thought into the design of this product. You can hold this either in-between your fingers or on top and either position is comfortable and eronomic. The articulation of the head and blades also allows easy flow over uneven heads. I also like the travel case.
Performance - I have used this product both wet and dry and have been pleased with the closeness of the shave for both. I don't think it's possible to get as close as a manual razor, but this comes pretty close. The battery life is also pretty great.
Cons:
Charger - this might just be a personal preference, but it really rubs me the wrong way when a company sells a product that requires me to find another bit of hardware to charge it. Granted we live in a world that generally has easy access to "power bricks" but it's off-putting that one is not included here.
Overall I really enjoyed this product and I will continue to use it.

Another success from Norelco

I have been using Norelco products since Santa rode their triple head shaver through the snow over 40 years ago.
Shaving my head for the last 15 years, I’ve tried all forms of electric shavers and trimmers - always failing back to a razor and shave cream. Enter the Head Shaver Pro.
From the first shave with it I knew I found what I was looking for. The four floating blades hugged all the curves on my head, shaving my head quicker and more even than ever before. It’s even faster and much more convenient than using shave cream and a blade.
While faster than a razor, the cut is not as close. These are not the “Lift and Cut” blades of yesteryear which in my opinion did get as close as a blade. There is slight stubble feeling but this works well holding my knit caps on.
The head shaver uses what they call a comfort cut blade which has a more rounded edge for comfort. Like when switching to any electric shaver, I did suffer a few “bites” on the sensitive skin around my neck. Getting comfortable with the shaver and your skin adjusting to the new shaver alleviates this pretty quickly.
The head shaver is comfortable to hold and maneuver over my head and the floating blades did an excellent job of remaining flat against my head.
It has a power adapt sensor which is supposed to read the density and adjust the power accordingly. I didn’t experience any difference in the sound of the motor while shaving but with maintaining a bald head, I didn’t expect to. I have noticed this on other models and it works well when shaving my face and beard.
The battery is rated for 60 minutes of run time on an hour charge. I’ve been using this shaver for a week now on one charge. If it does go dead, there is a five-minute quick charge feature to get the job done.
Over all I am really impressed with the Head Shaver Pro 5000. I’ve seen these head shavers starting to get pushed hard and glad I ended up with this one. I definitely recommend this to anyone who shaves their head. Five stars.
