    Quick, Healthy, Lean Grilling in the GREAT INDOORS

    This Phillips Avance Collection Smoke-Less Indoor Grill with Infrared Technology is so unique and amazingly quick. Over the past week I have used this grill five times, and, the more I use it the better I love it. Indoor grilling with Infrared Technology is a whole new venue compared to conventional charcoal, gas, NG, or Propane. But, the FUN part of Infrared grilling (for me) is that the learning curve is so simple. This is not a complicated indoor cooking grill. There are only three user components to deal with. The grill's main body houses the infrared tubes and reflectors, the die-cast, non-stick, aluminum cooking grid, and the grease and spatter tray How much simpler can it be? Out of the box the grill can be ready to cook right after you wash and dry the non-stick aluminum grid. At one end of the grill housing is the heavy-duty appliance cord, which is approximately 40” long. The grilling unit is labeled, 1,660 watts at 120V. Typically, appliance outlets can be found in the kitchen to handle that power requirement. At the opposite end of the grilling unit is a simple three-position lever switch, 'OFF', 'WARM', and 'ON'. Because of the power demand and the fact that this unit heats up to a constant 450 F degrees. I place this grill on my ceramic cook-top range, directly under my exhaust fan so I can dissipate the grilling heat. This baby gets hot, approximately 450F, and a little smoke (normal) will be also be produced when grilling various kinds of meat and veggies. So, my positioning it under the exhaust fan is where I want this unit to be for exhausting heat and what little smoke may be produced. Before I go any further I think I should explain the Phillips, 'Smoke-Less' feature as against the perception of 'Smoke-Free'. No cooking that I am familiar with is completely 'Smoke-Free', and I am sure you will agree. What I experienced is that using lean cuts of beef, poultry, pork, and fish are absolutely necessary, not to mention healthier for you too. However, using cooking oils with higher 'Smoking Points' is also a necessity for indoor grilling. I quickly learned that coating my meats, chicken, steaks, fish, and veggies with a light coat of cooking oil that have a high 'Smoking Point', well over 400F, produced little or no smoke while infrared grilling. Here is my list of higher 'Smoke Point' oils I have used – Corn Oil, Peanut Oil, Soybean Oil, and Extra-Light, Olive Oil, and Avocado Oil (not cheap). Be aware that regular virgin olive oil, butter, and, or, any kind of vegetable shortening is more suited for lower temperature cooking methods – the Phillips Infrared Grill reaches a pretty constant 450F, uniformly across its 112 square inches of cooking surface. Now for the actual grilling experience . . . . Like many men I think of myself as the 'Grill Master' of my er, ah, kingdom. My Lady, Darlene, is the Head Chef of our domicile. However, for whatever reason, she delegates the grilling responsibilities to me. So, after 50 years of grilling, I found the real gastronomical feast is successful only because of the 'preparation' – the grilling is just the final step of which, I play the 'Grill Master', the flipper of the switches, turner of the foods, and 'judge' of when the banquet is done. WooHoo! I like my 'tasty' job. Duplicating the ambiance of grilling and bar-b-queuing outdoors is a challenge for indoor epicureans to match. The rich, flame-kissed flavors only charcoal, natural-gas, and propane can produce require a lot of creativity, spices, and flavorings to convince your taste-buds this is real smoky taste. This is where Darlene's 50 years of cooking experience takes Infrared grilling to practical realism. I watched as Darlene mixed two tablespoons of Extra-Light Olive Oil with about five drops of liquid smoke and swished them around 'till blended. She then coated the chicken liberally on both sides. She used a combination of Smoked Paprika and Herbs and Garlic on the veggies, Summer and Zucchini squash, Portabella mushrooms, and Purple and Gold potatoes, which were all lightly coated in corn oil, first. When, we grilled the NY Strip Steaks, she used a 'Smoky-Mesquite' powdered rub and Charcoal Seasoning, a Hickory Smoked Sea Salt on the Yellow potatoes, and Shiitake mushrooms, which were marinated in dark, smoky, porter, craft beer. Yum Yum! On the grilled salmon she used a cedar plank, powder-rub from Seattle that was super-delicious. She did not use any spices, powders or flavorings on the center-cut pork chops, just a light sprinkling of smoky sea salt. Is anybody hungry yet? Darlene says you can find all of these smoky flavor enhancements at your favorite grocery or specialty store, and, they are inexpensive. She also says experimenting with mixing combinations of these spices, rubs, and powders is very taste rewarding using this Infrared Grill. So, mix your own – get taste-adventurous. I love the grilled veggies on this Phillips Infrared Grill. The non-stick, die-cast aluminum grid is spaced so that smaller cuts of veggies do not fall through the grate. They cook quickly with an even temperature of 450F and without burning or flare-ups. I cannot cook the veggies on our gas or charcoal grill with the same results. I love this grill for the quality and taste of the veggies. The grilled meats, poultry, and fish are delicious, but I can't get enough seasoned, and grilled vegetables. YooHoo! Clean-Up. When I was done with my grilling I noticed how the grease/splatter pan could be immediately cleaned. It remains 'cool' so just washing it with soapy dishwater liquid is fine. The spatter on the metal reflectors removes easily with oven cleaner, and the glass protecting the quartz cooking tubes cleans easily with ceramic/glass cook-top cleaner. It is important to note that the grill should be cleaned after every use. Included in the package with your grill is: User Manual set of Instructions and a Grilled Menu Book along with a sheet of Highlights Illustrating the advantages of Smoke-Less, Infrared Technology. You can go to the main Phillips website, register this product and download a comprehensive User Manual and peruse the Frequently Asked Questions along with detailed Cleaning Instructions. This unit has a one year Limited Warranty and is equipped with quartz heating tubes, which are rated at 5,000 hours of continued use by the manufacturers – should last you a 'lifetime'. TIPS: Use insulated pot holders while touching the cooking grid or its handles while cooking. Leave the skin on vegetables and fruit while grilling. Use powdered spices and rubs if you can – grainy spices, rubs and breading cause spatter. Don't be afraid to look at the ultra-red light – it does not cause any harm to your eyes. No tin foil or wraps that could cause excessive heating from reflected infrared rays. It is 'normal' to see stains on the metallic reflector panels over time. CLEAN this unit after each and every use – Use a soft brush to clean the non-stick grid. Use Oils with 'Higher Smoking' Points. Grill some fruits like apples, pears, and peaches – you will be pleasantly surprised. Needless to say the more I use this Phillips Indoor Infrared Grill the more I love it. Especially since Darlene enhances the flavors to that of those comparably grilled outdoors using charcoal, or gas. It is easy to store when we are not using it and it is ruggedly-built. It will easily grill a meal for two to four depending on your foodstuffs. I highly recommend this Phillips Avance Collection Smoke-Less Indoor Grill with Infrared Technology as a 'Must-Have' for any home and, or, apartment dweller. It is especially useful when the weather does not cooperate for outdoor grilling, and, or, it is too dark to grill outside. I love this Infrared Indoor Grill. My favorite grilled, food meal is seasoned veggies with chicken. Don't get me wrong – outdoor grilling is fantastic. But, with a little preparation of oils, spices, rubs, and powders, this Infrared Grill can almost duplicate or even surpass the outdoor grilling flavors.

Power: Electric, 1660 Watts Cooking: Infrared Grate: Cast Aluminum Warranty: 1 Year Bonus: 30-Page Color Cookbook w/Grilling Recipes & Tips Summary: I’m pleasantly surprised w/how well this grill has worked out. Getting started is easy w/just 3 primary parts: the main housing, the liftoff grilling grid, & the removable grease tray. These take all of 1 minute to set up. The grill surface heats up very quickly (6-minute warmup time recommended prior to placing your food on the grill); so, you’ll want all your food prep work completed before you turn on the grill. The aluminum grilling grid surface heats up to a constant 446° F.—the perfect temp for grilling different types of food simultaneously, including searing meat, preserving tenderness & juiciness, & browning w/o burning—& maintains that temp throughout the cooking process. The simple temp control knob has just 3 settings: Off, High, & Low. The Low or ‘Keep Warm’ setting is self-explanatory as it allows you to keep your food warm once you’ve finished cooking it. Cooking: So far, I’ve grilled rib-eye steaks, chicken thighs, lamb chops, & vegetables, including zucchini, yellow squash, & mushrooms. All the meats & veggies turned out fantastic & tasted very good, though the finished product doesn’t taste quite like charcoal-grilled food from a real outdoor BBQ. The die-cast aluminum grid does make authentic BBQ grill marks, & it did brown/grill all sides of our cuts surprisingly evenly, thanks, in part, to the heat reflectors. All in all, I got much better results w/this 112-sq. in. indoor infrared grill than w/my large, round, 240-sq. in., 15-serving, George Foreman Indoor/Outdoor Electric Barbecue Grill. Cleaning: The grill’s nonstick surface is much easier to clean than my Foreman grill, though I’ll be interested to see how durable the nonstick surface is after a year of use. Thankfully, there was minimal splatter. With my Foreman grill, there’s a ton of splatter; so, I have to line the sides of that grill w/walls of aluminum foil, or I end up scrubbing grease off everything around the cooking surface. And the Philips grill is “virtually smokeless” (boasting an 80% smoke reduction), although my nearby hallway smoke alarm did go off several times. (But it also goes off when I broil steaks in the oven.) Rather than your food cooking in its own grease, excess fat drops onto the XL-grease tray, allowing for leaner grilling. But the grill is too long to fit into a standard kitchen sink; so, soaking it isn’t feasible in our kitchen. Tip: Line the drip pan & the 2 non-heating-element sides for easier cleaning. The detachable parts of the grill are dishwasher safe. Portability/Space: This Philips grill takes up less space than my large Foreman grill. And this grill is light enough that’s it easy to move at just 12½ lbs., yet the rectangular cooking surface provides enough space to grill an adequate quantity of food for a family of 4. It’s large enough to grill 4 steaks or 6-to-8 hamburgers at once. Convenience: In my experience, cooking on this electric grill has proven far easier vs. the hassles associated w/my gas, propane, & charcoal grills, including even my other electric George Foreman grills. This Philips grill provides a simple & convenient way to grill indoors all year round, though I’ll probably use it mostly during the winter months & when it’s raining. Extras: Included in the box is a 30-page color booklet of grilling recipes, but I haven’t tried any of them yet. Electric Power Cord: Philips gives the user a pretty short leash. Based upon our limited counter space available for grilling, due to our many other kitchen countertop appliances, we don’t have an open/unused power receptacle immediately adjacent to our preferred spot for grill placement. So, a power cord longer than 40” would be helpful. Safety: The infrared heating lights (& reflectors) are extremely bright. There’s a warning not to stare at them, which seems obvious, but it’s difficult not to look down at them during the cooking process as I’m turning, repositioning, & monitoring the food on the grill. I’m seriously considering donning my polarized sunglasses the next time I grill. Durability: I wonder about the longevity of the reflector surfaces, which I find are accumulating burn spots from dripped grease w/each successive grilling session. Because they’re so hard to clean (dishwashing soap & hot water won’t cut it), it seems logical that the gradual buildup of these “stains” will reduce the efficacy of the grill over time. Price: The grill is a bit pricey for the value, but it’s far less expensive than a large outdoor grill. Bottom Line: 4 stars out of 5—I recommend this product. This Philips indoor infrared grill is a wonderful & convenient alternative to bulky, cumbersome, multi-step outdoor grills. I’ll be using this grill often.

    Lights - Action - Dinner!

    When I first saw the Grill on-line pictures it looked Big, which was a bit of a concern for us due to counter space and storing. Turns out the grill is not overly large and fits our needs to a T. Sits nicely on the kitchen counter and found space in my utility shelve for storage. Cleaning. It could not be more simple and easy, grease from meats drops into a removable tray. The infrared lights do not point toward the tray so the grease is not cooked further, you do not end up with hard baked grease. Simply spray warm water onto the tray to wash away some of the cleanup, then we swiped the pan with a sponge and everything came out in one swipe. NO Scrubbing. Kudos, could not be easier. The grill as well is simple to clean after cooking, not hard baked on particles. The grill appears to be have been made for our sink as the raised feet underneath the grill made for keeping the grill steady in the cooker fit exactly within our sink. Makes for, again a simple cleanup. First meal. We went for Brats and sliced grilled vegies. The Brats and grilled vegies came out spectacularly, could not have been more delicious. Lovely grill marks on the Brats and perfectly grilled bell peppers, mushrooms and onions. Yummy, thumbs up all around the kitchen table. Second meal. Went with 1” Pork Loin Steaks to see how the grill handled the thick steaks. The experience would lead me to go with a less thick cut next round due to how the infrared works. The infrared fires more directly at the bottom of the steaks rather than sides. We ended up holding up the steaks a bit to get the sides fully cooked, not a big deal, but will cook thinner cuts in the future which should work well. Was the Pork Good? Absolutely delicious. Very little smoke was produced from the brats, just a wisp. The Pork Loin Steaks did produce more smoke as I expected, it is not smokeless, but it is from our observation less than cooking in a skittle on the stove. Reason for that is the grease falling under the cooking area into pan below and not being cooked further. The grill can hold two large steaks with a cooking time of approximately 15 minutes. Believe you could cook about six hamburgers, as for Brats load up the grill! Big Pluses: Convenience of indoor grilling, similar to a gas grill for flavor Quick, easy meal without messing up the kitchen Easy, fast clean up (love it) Infrared Cooking – cool stuff And not last but least – wonderfully cooked food, your taste buds will thank you Do pay heed to the instruction on not staring into the infrared lamps, it is not comfortable. That being said, you still have to look into the grill area to cook and cannot avoid the lamps completely. Not a big issue. Like grilling, easy clean up and tasty eats? Than you will enjoy the Grill.

    We've been using an OptiGrill for years. We love and swear by it and has become a staple in our lives. It automatically cooks food to the perfect levels without having to worry about "is it done?"...leaving you free to prepare other things. I've been wanting another grill that was a bit bigger and manual - because there are a lot of things that just can't be done or won't fit right on the automatic grill (such as grilled corn). So, we decided to give this a try! The packaging is pretty standard fare, nothing fancy. It comes with a cheap(er) fold-out manual (I hate these things...lol...it's pure laziness on the manufacturer) - but it's not as bad as most I've seen - and a pretty basic cookbook. It has a few recipes, each one in several languages. I honestly didn't really see anything in it that piqued my interest. The grill, manual and "trial" cookbook is pretty much everything you get here. The grill plate that comes with it, according to the manual, is a BBQ grill plate. There is another one it seems, but does not come with this model and has to be purchased separately. Aside from it having lower pre-heat times (a few minutes, vs. 6 minutes), I was unable to determine the difference in the two plates, based on the manual itself. Anywho, on to the good stuff, right? How well does it do and perform? The functionality of the grill itself is pretty basic. It has two "on" modes. "Keep Warm" and "On". Per the manual, you must turn it on to "Keep Warm" for 2 seconds, prior to switching to the full "On" mode. It takes about 6 minutes on average to get fully heated. Once, I did put it on Keep Warm and forgot to switch it over to On afterwards, resulting in it taking double the amount of time to heat up. For the first food attempt, we tried burgers. Made 4 patties out of 1.25 lb. of meat. All 4 fit perfectly on the top, with enough space between so that they didn't touch. Cooked 5 min on each side. These burgers were so juicy and the grill marks were spot-on! The wife and I loved them, even more so than the ones we had gotten spoiled with off our other automatic grill. The next day, I fixed grilled corn on the cob. Brushed them with oil and put on the grill for about 20 minutes, rotating periodically. Did this until they had a small char line going across them. They cooked perfectly and were nice and crispy - not under or over cooked. We think we prefer our corn on the cob this way now, vs. boiled in a pot. As for the grill itself, it does take up a HUGE amount of space. Especially in removing the underpan to clean. The outside of the grill is super shiny...which gets dirty and splattered easily, but seems pretty easy to clean. The inside, however, is a different story. Once the metallic/shiny plates inside get dirty and splattered, it is nigh-impossible to clean and wipe off - and you have to be careful because two of the sides contain the infrared bulbs...so you can't put too much pressure on it. The underpan and the BBQ grill plate on top are super easy to clean. I always hand-wash them vs. putting it in the dishwasher. The non-stick coating on the BBQ plate does a great job so far. Really, my only true issue with this grill, aside from the sheer size of it...and why I docked a star...is the brightness of the infrared lights inside the grill. They are so bright, you almost can't see how well your food is cooking. I was just about tempted to put on my sunglasses, just so I could look at the burgers to flip them. Yep, that's how bright it gets... It's so bright, I couldn't even get an accurate picture of it to post on this review. In summary and thus far, this has became a great secondary grill for when we have more food than usual or bigger things, like corn. During holidays, we may even use it in conjunction with our OptiGrill to cover any type of food that we need to fix. Now...where can I put this thing when I'm not using it??

    Very nice addition to our kitchen

    Philips - Avance Collection Indoor Electric Grill - Black My family at home is now only my wife and myself. We both work and have long drives home each day. Like many families you just want your dinner to be fast and easy. The evenings go by to fast before you are back at work again. We both love grilled foods but we haven’t used an outside grill because it is just too much of a hassell. Between the time to prepare the grill and actually cook a meal on it takes to much of our limited time. The Phillips grill has completely changed that for us. It is really fast at both getting started up and actual cooking times are greatly reduced. One complaint is the same for any countertop appliance which is the room it takes. We have a small kitchen and did have the space but it would be something to consider. The grill uses infrared heat and Phillips claims up to 80% reduction in smoke. This will depend on what you're actually cooking but some foods you don’t even see any smoke. Others you might have smoke but it's never anything even close to any outside grill. The grill is very easy to clean and the two main parts to clean are dishwasher safe. You probably can’t get any outside grill to even fit in a dishwasher. Of course that also is because the actual cooking surface isn’t that large but it can fit two good size steaks and maybe a third if there not to big. The fact is this grill does perform as claimed and cooks fast with a minimum of cleanup and you never get the burning you would over a flame. If you looking to grill a quick steak or any other number of choices this grill is a great addition. There is only one control that turns the grill on and it has two settings. The second is full on and the first is a keep warm setting. Thats a nice addition since you will need to learn to adjust your cooking times as you get used to using the grill. There is no actual temperature adjustment here. Within a minute or two the grill gets to 446 degrees and that’s it. The perfect cooking temperature without actually burning your meal. Grilling can really make a quick meal something special. The Philips grill is a great addition and has made it possible to expand our meal choices in a way I can’t think of any other countertop appliance that can. It comes highly recommended but you will want to leave in on a counter and not put it in a cabinet like so many other appliance end up.

    The indoor grill is a very simple appliance, making it easy to use (plug in and turn on), and easy to clean. The first thing I grilled were vegetables; onions, carrots and cauliflower. I lightly coated with olive oil and seasonings. I sliced my onions, but still ended up losing one in between the slots. I set a timer for 5 minutes, then turned the vegetables. They had very dark grill lines, but had not started cooking at all. I set the timer for 7 more minutes. I tried a small carrot, because it looked like it was getting burnt. It was a little firmer and more rubbery than when I cook on a propane grill. The cauliflower was still hard and most of the onions were not done, yet getting very charred. I set the timer for 4 more minutes. The onions and carrots were good - did not taste burnt surprisingly. The cauliflower was barely cooked. It probably would have taken at least 7 more minutes - I did not have the time to wait. It says in the instructions not to use tin foil since the unit may overheat. This would be a perfect "indoor grilling" appliance if the vegetables could be put inside a foil pack and grilled that way. I may try it since there is a safety turn off if the device overheats. The second thing I grilled were chicken breasts. The smaller chicken pieces took about 13 minutes, the thicker piece 18 minutes. They had nice grill lines, but were not burnt. The flavor was very good, and they did not dry out. While there is no smoke, which is great, the grill does heat up the kitchen. It also has an intense red light. For this reason, I would probably stick to my outdoor grill in the summer, and use the indoor grill in the winter (although it is convenient for small quantities). Beware of touching the outer part of the grill handles - they get extremely hot and take a while to cool down. Like with most new cooking appliances, the Philips indoor grill will take some practice to get the cooking perfected, but overall it's really nice to have the ability to grill something inside. It's a healthier way to cook as well since the food is not sitting in oil. The grill and catch pan wash up very easily.

    Excellent near-smokeless indoor grill

    This is actually my first grill EVER. So with that considered, I probably have a different take on this grill than some other individuals who are used to a gas/propane outdoor grill. However, I do own a table-top infrared oven, which shares some similarities to this Philips infrared grill. The setup process is incredibly simple, and there really are only 3 pieces to this grill: the grill plate, the infrared base, and the drip plate. Before you begin, it's wise to clean off the grill plate with hot soapy water, but avoid using heavy abrasives. Plug in the infrared base, and flip the switch on and you're ready to go! There are three settings for this grill: OFF, ON, and WARM. When ON, the grill heats up to a constant~450° F. I haven't measured the WARM setting, but I imagine it defaults to somewhere around ~165° F like my infrared oven does on its warm setting. So far, I have grilled beef burgers, chicken breasts, and vegetable kebabs/skewers. The included documentation gives you fair estimates on how much time total should be spent grilling these types of items, and I'd say it was fairly accurate—but when you're a grilling noob like I am, it can be a tossup. Regardless, the burgers turned out great, the chicken was very juicy and tender, and the skewers were excellent. And yes, everything had grill marks, as expected. As with any grill, this is still a lightly involved process, so you'll still need to flip and rotate, but infrared typically cooks more thoroughly, so timing and results may differ compared to a gas/electric grill. As far as smoke goes, there is so little, but keep in mind that fat and oil will still cause smoke, but definitely less. What's especially nice is that this grill can be used during any time of the year (this will be great to use indoors during the winter), and you can bring it anywhere that has an electric socket! Gone are the days of carrying around a propane tank or charcoal. And of course, no fire is necessary! Could definitely bring this to a small barbecue get-together! All it takes is some basic grilling knowledge! While I'm not a newcomer to cooking, I am a newcomer to grilling, but this Philips indoor electric grill will definitely help change that!

    I've been anxiously awaiting the arrival of this wonderful appliance as it is just TOO HOT to grill "traditionally" this summer. So when I found out I could grill inside the comfort of my own home with NO SMOKE I was sold. In fact, minutes after this indoor grill arrived, I was at the supermarket picking out what I was going to grill first. I thought, why not go big? So I got 2 strip steaks roughly 3/4" in width and about 1lb each. Both fit perfectly on the grill with plenty of room to spare. But I'm jumping a bit ahead of myself. The grill is very simple to operate. There is a drip pan that sits in the main unit, and then the (non-stick) grill that sits on top. The unit has two power settings; "warm" and "on". And I must say, once the grill is set to "on" - it is immediately ready for the food you are about to prepare. No more waiting for traditional grills to warm up! The steaks took about 5-7 minutes per side, and came out perfectly medium rare. Juicy and delicious. In fact, I was extremely impressed with how well, and even the unit grilled the steaks. I have never cooked with infrared before. But now, I feel like I have a whole world of grilling possibilities, which again, I can experience in the comfort of inside my home! The cleanup was a breeze. The drip pan rinsed out with nothing sticking, and the grill with its non-stick coating was clean with a quick rinse under the kitchen sink, and a wipe of a towel. It was THAT EASY. And another cool thing? You don't have to wait for anything in the unit to cool off. As fast as it heats up when you turn it on, once you turn it off - you can almost immediately pull the drip tray out for cleaning. Try THAT on a traditional grill! (actually, please don't try that!) If you are like me, and LOVE grilled food - but HATE how hot this summer has turned out to be (first world problems, I know!) then this indoor grill is for you! It gets the MemphisTechieRN 4-star seal of approval! You CAN'T go wrong!

    It lives up its claim of 'virtually no smoke'

    This is a nice indoor grill. It's simple to set up and simple to use; I had it out of the box and in use in about 15 minutes. After an initial cleaning of the removable grid, and a quick look through the manual, I decided to see what it would do with some porkchops. At this point I'll mention that the warning in the manual about not looking into the lamps is actually a bit understated. I've never had a grill that uses infrared lamps, so when I turned the grill on, even though I wasn't looking at the lamps directly, the lamps were still so bright I wasn't sure how I was supposed to 'not look at them' while flipping anything that was on the grill. I wound up turning the whole grill sideways, so I was at the end with the power switch instead of in front of it; in that position, the light coming from the lamps was much more subdued. Once the grill heated up (about 7 minutes) I put the porkchops on. I could immediately tell that this was going to be a much different experience from fixing meat on the stove-top; the light from the lamps made the 1/2" porkchops translucent, hopefully meaning they were being cooked evenly all the way through. In about 12-14 munites, the porkchops were done and absolutely perfect. I had marinated the porkcops the night before, so I thought that might add more smoke to the grilling process, but throughout the entire grilling, there was virtually NO smoke. After dinner, the grill was cool enough to clean. Cleanup was quick and easy; I cleaned the grid and the drip tray with soap and water, taking about 5 minutes, and the main unit had almost nothing on it, so a simple wipe with a damp cloth was all that it took to get the unit ready to store until next time. I'm extremely pleased with this grill. It's very simple to use, grills to perfection, cleans up in minutes, and lives up to its claim of 'virtually no smoke'. I would recommend this for anyone wanting a 'grilling experience' while still being in your kitchen.

    Better than an easy bake oven

    It is so strange to grill inside over a bright warm light, almost like a kids easy bake oven or something. However, it works really well. It only takes a matter of minutes to get the griddle searing hot, like a regular grill, and food cooks just as well as a grill with easy clean up. Though the flavor is not the same as cooking over gas or charcoal, I feel that this gave the true flavor of the food. So far the food has been juicy and held the full flavor of the marinade. There was a little smoke, and you do get some grease splatter on fatty meats, but nothing as bad as pan cooking. The entire device is easy to wipe down and the messiest parts are dishwasher safe. Though it is not as big as a typical grill, I can’t imagine where I would put it if it was, it is big enough to cook a decent meal and small enough to leave space on my stove. I’ve never used a grill like this before, but compared to those smaller grill like devices that can only hold one patty at a time and claim to be healthier, I feel this is a better option. This is more like a grill, cooks at about the same rate as a grill at mid heat level, drips the fat into a tray that you can throw in the dishwasher later and has a decent surface area. I do wish they had a different temperature option though.

    Really cool if you can't use a real grill

    We live in a 2nd floor condo and aren't able to have a "real" grill on our balcony. We've wanted something to emulate one for a while. This does a pretty decent job at that. The cooking surface is kind of small compared to an outdoor grill, but it's a kitchen appliance so I can't imagine it getting any bigger. It was tough enough to find a storage spot for the entire grill as it's pretty large. You can cook 2 steaks on it comfortably. You don't have a lot of control over temperature and there isn't a meter anywhere to know how hot it really is. Controls are minimal and easy to use. It's a single dial with an "off" position and then a low and high. It's super easy to tell which setting you're on as this thing is BRIGHT! Seriously, don't stare directly into the grill when you turn it on. And make sure the grill is in place. I can't imagine how bright thing thing is without the grill obstructing some of the light. The low setting is bright and then the high setting is BRIGHT. There is no "not bright" setting. So far, I've only really used the high setting to cook a couple of steaks. And then we tried to cook some brats on the low setting but they weren't really cooking at all so we turned it up to high. Both turned out really well. The brats we a lot better than the water bath version we usually do. The steaks were really good and beat out the "Griddler" that we usually use to cook things. Cleanup is pretty nice and simple. The bottom tray comes out pretty easy to clean up the drips and such and the top grill isn't attached to anything (just lays over the top) so it's super easy to remove and wipe down or wash. You're told not to submerge the actual unit in water (obvious reasons here) but I haven't noticed it getting very dirty and it's just plastic on the outside that's pretty easy to wipe down. Which, speaking of plastic, I was pretty surprised by how cool the main plastic stayed. The harder plastic that's right next to the grill top gets a little hot but the plastic all around the unit stays really cool for the amount of heat the grill throws out when you have it on. You almost immediately feel the heat when your turn it on. Overall. Highly recommended if you can't use a real outdoor grill for whatever reason. I'd probably still go with an outdoor grill if I was able to use one, but even if I had an outdoor grill, I think I'd still use this on occasion as it has been really easy to setup and tear down (which, sometimes, can be a hassle with an outdoor grill). So I guess I'd recommend this to anyone!

    Interesting Alternative to Outdoor Grilling

    The Philips indoor grill offers an interesting proposition, indoor electric grilling for presumably when weather or space does not cooperate. The question though is, does the grill perform well enough to be worth using, both by itself when an outdoor grill is completely not an option or as an alternative when fuel or weather prevent use of your outdoor? The short answer, mostly yes! The grill is a pretty simple affair. Easy setup and cleaning, simple controls, and muted looks. You won't feel like there's some device masquerading as something more complex or interesting than it is sitting in your kitchen. Once it heats up, 6-7 minutes which is pretty similar to outdoor grill times, it provides a very steady and uniform heat. It's quite amazing just how even things cook on the surface. The only setup issue is the comically short power cord. I suppose this is meant to sit where someone might normally have a microwave or toaster oven on their counter top. While it's certainly useful enough to deserve such space, the fact is most people will already have that taken up by another device. The cabling should allow for non-permanent placement in an otherwise normally stocked kitchen. Grilling meat and some veggies went well. It would be nice, to have a mesh grill top for smaller items. I'll need to investigate whether outdoor grill accessories will work well with this. The biggest issues, aside from the short cabling, is the effect of the light from heating elements. Typically, when grilling, one relies on either temperature, look/doneness, time, or some combination of the three to determine when to check items or remove them from heat. Here, the light from the heating elements give a weird cast that makes it hard to rely on how something looks, to tell how it's cooked. As a result, you'll definitely need to stick with the timer or temperature approach. It's not a deal breaker, but it does make this slightly less convenient than expected. In all, I think this makes a good buy. For many cooks, the holy grail is something that puts out even consistent heat. This does that in a package that fits well in most kitchens. I anticipate making use of this for winter grilling or as an accessory grill for outdoor events.

    I’m somebody who cooks quite a bit and I enjoy grilling outside when the weather is good. On days when grilling outside isn’t an option, or if you cannot have a grill outside, this unit does the trick. The Phillips Avance electric grill is designed well, is easy to use and the food comes out tasting good. I’ve cooked a couple of steaks, some chicken and hamburgers on this grill now. The steaks were perfectly cooked and delicious. The chicken was okay, but I definitely prefer the taste of charcoal grilled chicken. The hamburgers were pretty good. Not having an open flame takes something away from the taste, but they were still good.. Just not really grilled flavor. The user manual comes with recommended cooking times, which I’ll list below. The grill only has two settings, on and warm. I wish the heat were more adjustable. I also think a lid would have been great, and would decrease the cooking times. The grill heats up quickly, there really is no smoke, or at most, very very little. The grill didn’t heat up my kitchen really and cooking over the bright red surface was just fine. Clean up was very easy, however there are some spots on one of the mirrored walls inside that I cannot remove with soap and a sponge. They are from grease/fat drip splatter during cooking. I’ll have to do some research and try to clean it with something harder w/o scratching the surface. If this isn’t something that I can clean off I wonder how many uses I will get until all of the inner reflective walls are covered with spots. Only time will tell. Overall this is a really cool kitchen appliance to have, and I will try to make use of it whenever possible. I’m excited to try grilling more foods and I hope the non-scorched / non-grilled flavor grows on me. Owner Manual suggested cooking times: Large Steak: 12-16 min Small Steak: 8-15 min Burgers: 10-15 min Chicken: 22-26 min Fish: 15-16 min Shrimp: 12-14 min Brats: 16-18 min Hotdogs: 12-16 min Corn: 14-16 min Veggies: 8-15 min Bread: 2-5 min

    This works fantastic

    I want to start off by saying I wanted to drop a half star due to more smoke from the grill than I felt it should be giving off. But since you can't deduct a half star, it wouldnt be fair to deduct a full star. First off set up is easy, just plug it in, turn it on and you're ready to grill. I've grilled steaks and burgers, both came out great. You are supposed to first turn the grill to the warming setting for 2 minutes, then turn to the on position. The first night i grilled two Ribeyes, the came out perfect. It took about 15 minutes to grill and there was absolutely no smoke at all. The steaks were grilled to medium well, they were tasty and did not lose any of the juices. I can see me doing a lot of indoor grilling with this. Night 2 It was grilled burgers. Once again, the burgers were grilled to medium well. I think these burgers came out better than they do when grilling on my BBQ. The burgers were very tasty and very juicy. Now the burgers did put off a little more smoke than I expected, but like i said earlier, its really only worth a small deduction, but not enough to take away a full star. The cooking is done with infrared lamps and they work great. There is enough room on the grill for 2 large steaks, or 6 regular size hamburgers. We are a family of 4 and there is enough room to grill for us all. Cleanup is a breeze, just take off the grill, pull the pan, and cleanup is done in 5 minutes. I can already tell this is going to be one of my most used appliances, and I would recommend this to anyone looking for an indoor grill.

    Delicious, comfortable grilling experience

    I enjoy grilled food but the smoke and preparation are very uncomfortable and sometimes the smoke makes me sick. This product is heaven sent because it solves my discomfort process of conventional grilling. I get a lot of headaches whenever I do an extreme heat activity and grilling is one of these activities with the smoke making it worse. My first cooking was Flap Meat Steak (Churrasco) with Squash Zucchini. Seasoned meat with Goya Sal Parrillera, ground pepper, and a bit of sour orange. Turned on the heating element and after 6 minutes, I place the meat on the grill. Recommended time was 8 min for each side. Since I like my meat well done, I left it for 11 minutes on each side. While that was cooking I placed a few ½ inch squash yellow/zucchini on the side. In less than 30 minutes the vegetables and the meat were all cooked. The vegetable was very juicy. Virtually no smoke and it was evenly well cooked. The family enjoyed the first indoor grilled meal. They loved it. It is simple to use, it only has three setting: off, warm and cook. Cleaning was very easy. The non-stick aluminum grid was like new. The grease on the bottom tray was not hard to remove. My wife loves the fact that now we can enjoy grilled food without me getting sick. She started a list of other meals we can prepare. Happy wife, happy life.

    Very little smoke

    Grill is relatively small, good for one or two portions at a time. Grilling any meats or vegetables does produce smoke from the food itself, there's no way around it. However this grill keeps the grease pan relatively cold so it does not keep on searing the oils and grease on the tray. The heating elements are recessed on the sides and covered by a glass. A steak takes about 18 minutes (thick cut, medium temperature). Heat seems consistent around the edges. Vegetables produce almost no smoke, a lean beef cut produces some smoke and a sausage would produce a bit more smoke. However it is actually a lot less smoke than cooking a beef on the stove. Cleaning is relatively quick. The grill top is solid aluminum (coated black) and the grease pan is deep enough to handle with ease. It slides to one side. The side panels are not removable, so it's impossible to keep perfectly clean, but it's simple to clean well enough so it doesn't grease up with moist paper towels. The grill and pans are dishwasher safe, but it's simpler to just rinse them with dish soap and hot water. It would've been better if the inside walls of the grill were removable. It comes with simple instructions and a recipe book. The only control on the switch is off/warming/on. So it's simple to use, lightweight, doesn't produce a lot of smoke, cooks consistently and is easy to clean most of it.

    This grill is fantastic – it really works as advertised, and does a great job no matter what food you are grilling! I do have a standard propane grill for use outside, but was looking forward to testing out this new Philips Indoor Electric Grill. I was hoping it would work well, so that I’d be able to grill in winter, or in bad weather. The grill exceeded my expectations. We have grilled pork chops and chicken thighs, and they both cooked up nice and even, with perfect grill marks. We also grilled up some pineapple, and that also came out very nice. The heat is very even throughout the surface of the grill (unlike my propane grill!), and it is ready to go in a quick 5 minutes or so. And the “smokeless” claim is true – even with a lot of marinade on the chicken, there was very little if any smoke. Clean up is very easy, but the inside panels do seem a little harder to keep clean. The grill top and the drip tray are both removable and very easy to clean. I have not bothered to put them in the dishwasher, as washing them by hand is easy enough. I cannot recommend this grill highly enough! It would be great for people in apartments that cannot have an outdoor grill, but is equally useable for someone who wants the ability to grill indoors with minimal fuss. Make sure you read the manual thoroughly, and do NOT stare into the grill while it is on. :)

    The Philips - Avance Collection Indoor Electric Grill - Black is designed to be the closest thing to an outdoor grill than any other indoor grill on the market. I have been using the George Foreman indoor grills for years, but they are not true grills in the sense of the concept of a grill. They are simply two induction plates that get hot and form a sandwich effect on the meat being cooked. The Philips - Avance Collection Indoor Electric Grill - Black is designed to produce a similar effect to the conventional charcoal or gas grill that is used outside of the home. The meat is separated from any metal heating it up and hot air from infrared lights supply the heat similar to charcoal or propane gas grill. The meat cooks well and is very juicy, not dry as sometimes can happen with outdoor grills. Cooking time is not long, but I did notice smoke traveling outside of my kitchen into other rooms. Adequate ventilation is a must when using the Philips - Avance Collection Indoor Electric Grill - Black. The first thing I grilled was ground beef. I had to try a burger with grilled onions. It was delicious, tender and juicy. Grill marks were evident and it had me smiling from the taste and texture of the burger. Next I had to grill chicken. The chicken was grilled crispy on the outside, but juicy on the inside. There was no blood dripping, because the Philips - Avance Collection Indoor Electric Grill - Black cooks everything at the right temperature to ensure a full done product. The only difference between cooking with the Philips - Avance Collection Indoor Electric Grill - Black and a charcoal/wood chip grill is the smoke from the charcoal/woodchips producing flavorful smoke that adds to the meat. The Philips - Avance Collection Indoor Electric Grill - Black is better than your propane gas grills, because your food does not have that gas taste. I have retired all of my George Foreman grills and will be using the Philips - Avance Collection Indoor Electric Grill - Black from now on!

    Perfect Indoor Grill!

    Let me start by saying that I grill outdoors nearly 365 days a year. I grill in the rain, snow, etc, but not anymore! Today I finally got a chance to use this grill because I've been camping nearly ever since It showed up at my house. I cooked some pork tenderloin and some garlic bread, and it came out amazing. Tenderloin normally takes about 24-26 minutes on my normal grill, and this indoor grill cooked it about the same in the same amount of time. If anything, I probably could of cooked it a couple minutes less to be perfect. On top of that, there was practically no smoke. The only thing that made smoke was the garlic bread, but it was covered in butter, and it was just a tiny bit of smoke. Clean up was very easy, and basically consisted of using a wet paper towel while the grill was still warm. Overall I'm very impressed, and can see many uses for this, especially if you live in an apartment with strict no BBQ laws/rules.

    love this grill. as far as smoke, its mainly smokeless as far as what a charcoal grill would normally put out. you still will get some smoke off the food. it is a lot less smoke then even frying in a pan though. it does produce some heat but only for the grill and above. the sides of it stay cool. make sure to follow directions and like turn knob to the warm position first for a couple seconds and then on and let it warm up for about 6 min. I live in a apt and cant have a grill, I can have charcoal but cant use it on the property, so this is great. I have been using it just on my counter. being electric I could also run an extension cord and go outside with it. it is small but I can get burgers on it. the ones from Walmart that come in the box. and those are pretty round burgers. as they shrink can put another one or 2 on or some dogs. it does not have the same taste as a grill would as far as when you use charcoal. its similar to using propane. but you also don't have the taste from the propane that you can get either. its a great addition to owning grills, and great for those who are like me and cant use a charcoal or propane grill, if its raining and need to be indoors or if you want to grill but don't have charcoal. it only has 3 choices for heat, off, warm or on. and it does the whole thing so you cant have half for warm and the other half for on. I hope they come out with a bigger one that has that option or possibly an option to adjust heat. but for a smaller grill not needed. does leave grill marks as well. like I said, let it get warm first. I did not know what to expect and overall I am very satisfied.
