Far too expensive for very little benefit

THE GOOD - Typical good Sonicare cleaning - Battery lasts two weeks ( but often more ) - Compatible with older Sonicare brush heads THE BAD - Very pricey - No noticeable cleaning benefit over older Sonicare brushes - Only comes with one brush head - The "Advanced" brush heads are notably pricier than the normal C, G, and W heads - "Advanced" heads not available in compact sizes - Touch buttons easy to accidentally press - Poorly designed charge base I've been using Sonicare toothbrushes for years, namely a 6100 and 9700 series, and I rather like them. They clean my teeth well, replacement heads aren't much more expensive than a good manual toothbrush when purchased in bulk, and the batteries can go weeks between charges. I was hopeful Philips' claims about the 9900 being smarter and more advanced would be a noticeable improvement, but that's not been my experience. The SenseIQ on the 9900 is supposed to be able to detect how you brush your teeth and automatically change the brushing function to get the best cleaning. If the sensors detect you not brushing certain areas of your mouth as it thinks you should, it will report such on the companion mobile application, extend the brushing timer, and instruct you to brush them again. The new A3 brush head is supposed to be an "advanced" or "all-in-one" brush head that Philips claims cleans just as well as their C heads, whitens as well as the W heads, and is better for gums than the G heads. The big downsides here is the price. Philips is asking a very large chunk of cash for the 9900. Aside from the SenseIQ, the feature set is practically identical between the three Sonicare models I've used ( minus Bluettoth for the 6100 of course ). They all will detect the brush head type in use, they all have three intensity settings, all the batteries will last weeks between recharges, and all clean my teeth really well. If the SenseIQ cleaned my teeth a lot better than the other two, I might say the price difference is justified. But really, neither me or my spouse can tell the difference. For a toothbrush costing three time as much as my 6100 and $100 more than the 9700 ( current prices ), I expect to see stellar results, and frankly I don't. The 9700 was also expensive when I got it, but at least it came with several brush heads and a tongue scrubbing paddle. The 9900 includes only one brush head in the box, and replacement A3 heads cost considerably more than the C2s I use now ( the 9900 can of course use the older brush heads, too ). As of now, there's also no compact model of the A brush head. Apart from cleaning performance, I also don't like many of the design elements of the 9900. The handle has touch sensitive areas instead of physical buttons for power and intensity, which I found easy to accidentally press while I was brushing my teeth. The charging base is also quite light, which doesn't stay planted well on the bathroom counter ( the weight of the cord alone is enough to move or prop it up when the brush handle isn't resting in it ). I also don't understand why Philips opted to give it a USB plug and adapter since you already get a USB charging travel case in the box. A fixed AC adapter wart would have been simpler and smaller. Perhaps a lab or a dentist could point out the cleaning improvement of thee 9900 over previous Sonicare models. I'm sure there are some people with uncommon but specific dental health needs that will see benefit to the 9900, or perhaps its feedback can help a lazy brushers scrub their teeth better. But I'm willing to guess most adults that already have a good tooth care regimen won't see a difference. For them, the 9900 is too much for too little.

      Hi Jaron,

thank you for leaving this elaborate review of the Sonicare 9900 Prestige. We greatly appreciate your feedback and will take note of it to further improve our products and services in the future. Nevertheless, we're sorry to hear that this model isn't what you expected. The Sonicare 9900 Prestige offers an abundance of features that aren't included in our other models, which also explains the price of the device compared to others. If You Really Care About Your Dental Health

The first thing I noticed about this Sonicare brush is it was almost 400 dollars. You can buy a Sonicare for 40 dollars. So, what is so special about THIS model? The answer is ‘plenty’ but to make it worthwhile you really need to care about your dental health, keeping track of how you brush, how well you brush, and how often. To do this, you need to install the free app on your phone. The purpose of the app is to keep track of your brushing and how well and how frequently you do. The app will give pointers and sometimes almost nag you into doing well by your teeth, pointing out if you’re ‘scrubbing’ (which you do not need to do with a Sonicare brush) and if you’re pushing the brush too hard against your teeth. It will then log each time you brush and how long into the app. Included with your Sonicare is their most premium brush head, the A3 Premium, which is designed for better plaque and stain removal than their other brushes. The brush ‘times’ your brushing with little pauses, 6 times as you brush, to remind you to move the brush to a different area. I find that helpful because in addition to making sure you brush long enough, it helps keep you from missing certain areas which you might without this feature. Also included is a simulated leather carrying case which will also charge your brush via a USB-C port when you’re on the road. The biggest negative is that sometimes I found that the app is somewhat ‘buggy.’ If you don’t remember to keep your phone nearby with the app open, it won’t record your brushing that day, and once for me even when it WAS turned on it ‘missed’ it. There’s no way to correct the information manually if it is missed. This does not seem like something that could not be corrected by an app update in the future, however. Overall it’s up to you to decide whether to spend this much on your toothbrush. If you do, there are enough premium features in this Sonicare to not make you regret your decision.

Excellent toothbrush, one weird design choice

This toothbrush combines everything you expect from a Philips brush (superior cleaning ability and ease of use) and adds to it in a BIG way with the charging case. The battery life on the brush is very good on its own, but the fact that the case itself doubles as a charger with a simple USB-c plug means you no longer have to worry about whether or not you can bring this on a long trip without it dying. There is one interesting quirk that many not care about but it was annoying enough for me to knock off an entire star. The tooth brush and brush head will NOT fit in the case if the hard plastic cover is on the brush head. As someone who always uses these covers (especially since they come with them equipped) I think this is a huge design oversight on a product that is placed in an absolutely premium price point. Is that enough for me to not recommend the brush? Absolutely not. It does, however, make it not perfect and worthy of 5 stars in my opinion.

This will be my 3rd Philips Sonicare toothbrush over the past 12 years or so and this one is by far the best one I've ever owned. It is very light, which actually took some getting used to because the previous ones were heavy and I really liked the way they felt in your hands. This one is slick...both visually and while holding it, but that is really the only bad thing I can say about it. I like the stand and the speed at which it recharges. I like the multiple settings that control the force the toothbrush uses, and allows you to use. As for the app, while it's handy and fun to use, I don't really use it. It's easy enough to brush each top and bottom third for 20 seconds however the app does have some features that people may find useful. As for me, as long as I'm brushing for two minutes twice a day...that is all the information I need. While I haven't used it yet, the carrying/travel case is sharp and I like that you can charge the toothbrush while it is in that case with any USB charger.

    Premium intelligent feature rich toothbrush

This is a high end electric toothbrush with advanced features. The handle has a sleek solid build and feels premium. It comes with one brush head, a charging base, and a compact leather travel case. The brush can be charged from the case using the USB-C cable, which comes handy during travel. Also, with USB-C, there is one less cable to carry. Make sure to charge the toothbrush fully before your first use. The A3 brush head that comes with this is an all-in-one brush head and definitely feels better compared to other compatible ones. You can still use any compatible brush head, given the A3 is on the expensive end. I wish they had included more than 1 brush head with this unit. The toothbrush comes with SenseIQ technology. You need to download Philips Sonicare app to make best use of these features. The brush communicates with the app on how much pressure you are applying, and adjusts the intensity in real time based on your brushing style. The app also provides personalized guidance on your brushing process by dividing your mouth into 6 zones and how to brush in each zone. You need to have the app open when brushing for this progress tracking and personalized recommendation. The app also lets you choose from 5 different cleaning modes. The toothbrush comes with 3 intensity settings that can be changed by pressing the intensity lights under the power button. Overall, if you are looking to upgrade your electric toothbrush, consider this intelligent toothbrush with rich features for next level brushing.

This is an excellent product….in my view though, it is to complicated. you download an ap to program certain things and it can provide feedback….too much!! I gave 4 stars because it has the best power….I still use it as a dumb toothbrush.

The Basics, the tooth brush is comfortable and does a great job on the teeth. You can connect it to your phone and use the app to track progress and get feedback on brushing. No complaints on this toothbrush other than the cost. If you like the tech part, this will be great.

This Sonic Care is a winner

Never thought I would enjoy an electric toothbrush. Never knew why I needed one. But when my dentist recommended this one, I thought I would try the best. I think I found it. Yes it is expensive. But it just works. It makes me look forward to brushing and with the Sonic care app, it literally coaches me how to brush properly. If it lasts the year and a half of the warranty or longer, I think it is worth it.

I loved this toothbrush before it stopped working. It did a great job keeping my teeth clean. Unfortunately 11 months in it became very loud and the brush was vibrating but not cleaning at all. Its way too expensive to die so early.
