I'll start by saying that I recommend the Sonicare toothbrushes for anyone. They do a great job of cleaning. This was a replacement from my Essence Sonicare. This 5100 model is sleeker, thinner, and quieter. The design is great, fits well in my hand. You can feel that your teeth are getting cleaned well. This toothbrush has many sensors to help optimize your teeth cleaning. You can tell when you're pressing too hard as the brush sound and intensity lowers. With 3 different modes, Clean, White, and Gum Care you can really make sure you do a superior job cleaning your teeth. Highly recommend this toothbrush. The replacement heads are not too expensive either. No regrets with this toothbrush!

This is an upgrade from my older oral b toothbrush which felt underpowered and I love it. I like that it comes in black, makes me feel more manly when I brush my teeth lol. It feels powerful in the hand but not so jarring where it’s annoying. More of a pulsating motion. It also comes with a matching black case which is great for traveling. It also comes with one brush head and your charger. The unit has 3 modes which are regular brush, whitening and gym care mode. My teeth feel so much cleaner after using it. The toothbrush also has a pressure sensor to let you know if you are brushing too hard. I recommend getting this if you are looking into a new electric toothbrush.

I have wanted to try the Sonicare toothbrush for awhile. I’ve had another brand for years and it was time for a new one. I love the black color and the way it cleans my teeth. The vibration took a little bit to get used to since it tickles some, but overall I like it. The charge lasts for a long time and the base is small enough to travel with. I like the way the toothbrush cleans and it is quieter than my other brand. I do wish the brush attachment was also black to match the other piece. This does not affect usability though, just an asthetic issue. Overall, very happy with this toothbrush!

    Very nice toothbrush-minor improvements needed

This rechargeable toothbrush came with many impressive features that I loved and a few that could be improved upon. Features I liked: Battery: A long-life battery claiming that it will last for 2 weeks is one impressive feature that I am looking forward to. Brushing Modes with Timers: It has 3 brushing modes. In the Clean mode, the toothbrush will run for 2 minutes. The instructions suggest that you brush one quadrant of your teeth for 30 seconds and then move on to another quadrant every 30 seconds until all 4 quadrants have been cleaned. The toothbrush beeps at 30 second intervals to remind you to move on. In the White mode, the toothbrush runs 2.5 minutes, beeping every 30 seconds. After the 2 minutes for cleaning are up, you have an additional 30 seconds to brighten and polish your front teeth. In the Gum Care mode, the toothbrush runs 3 minutes to give you additional time to massage your gums after cleaning and polishing your teeth. Intensity Level: There are 3 intensity levels for brushing. Although level 3 is recommended, you can set the level lower as needed. Also, there is an Easy Start setting which comes deactivated but has directions in the manual to tell you how to activate it. Using this setting, the Sonicare toothbrush gradually increases power over the first 14 brushings to help you get used to the toothbrush. I should have used this setting, but after the 3rd or 4th brushing, I was already used to it. Brush head Replacement Reminder: Not sure if I like this feature or not yet, but it can be deactivated if you don’t like it. Over time, based on the amount of time you use the brush and the pressure you apply, it will light up amber when it is time to replace the brush head. Usually about 3 months. There is a 50% off coupon included in the box to help you pay for additional brush heads the first time. You have to register to get the coupon. Pressure Sensor: It comes with an advanced sensor that lets you know if you apply too much pressure while you’re brushing. This is another feature that can be deactivated if you wish. Battery Indicator Lights: The toothbrush has lights that tell you when the battery has medium battery charge left, when the battery is low, when it is charging, and when it is fully charged. Features I think could be improved: Travel Case: Although the toothbrush comes with a travel case, you cannot fit the charger in it. This is the biggest problem that I have with the product. I travel a lot and often it is for more than 2 weeks, so I would need to bring the charger with me. It would be nice if it could all be kept together in the same case. Number of Brush Heads included: There was only one brush head in the box. The travel case holds 2 brush heads and the instructions recommend different brush heads for different purposes. I think they should have sent the most common 2 brush heads so you would be able to try them both out. Also, if you wanted to share the product with your spouse, you would want a second brush head. You should also be able to buy color-coded brush heads to tell them apart. No Pause button included: By the time I get to the 3rd quadrant of my teeth, there is no more toothpaste on the brush. I would like to be able to pause the brush and apply more toothpaste to it. As it is, If I want to brush by quadrants like the instructions suggest, I have to turn it off and apply more toothpaste which starts the timer from the beginning again. What I have recently begun to do to eliminate this problem is to not brush my teeth in quadrants. Instead, I put the toothpaste on the brush and brush all of my teeth (front and back) right away. I brush all surfaces within the first 30 seconds. Each time the 30 second reminder beeps, I do this procedure again. This still gets all surfaces brushed over a 2 minute time span, and I get toothpaste applied to all surfaces. As you can see, my improvement suggestions are minor. Overall, I think the brush is a very good product and should be helpful in improving the health of your teeth and gums.

Philips Sonicare - ProtectiveClean 5100 I have been trying to do what the dentist tells me but honestly just before and right after a visit I am at my best. Then I slip back to my old ways and make excuses on the next visit about how I am going to really, really do better. This was my chance to try something new for me. I haven’t had prior experience with anything but a standard toothbrush. The Philips Sonicare turns out to be much easier to use than I expected. The first time I used it I don’t think I quite understood what I was doing. Now having used it for awhile it is coming to me. And it is getting easier the more I use it. You can read any number of these reviews for the features that make this Sonicare product unique. But if the way my teeth feel after brushing, if you want to call it that, gives me hope. The Clean setting seems just fine for me and according to Philips should be good for anyone. So although you do have three settings Clean is the default. As a new user I can’t help but wonder why I didn’t try this technology before. The final judge will be when I go back for my next dental visit. It will very interesting to see if how my teeth feel translates into a compliment from my dentist. I do have some concerns about the cost of the brushes but today I am giving the Sonicare a big thumbs up. And if my next visit to the dentist I get a thumbs up I will be a true believer.

First Electronic Toothbrush - Very Satisfied

I have never used an electric toothbrush before the Philips Sonicare - ProtectiveClean 5100 Rechargeable Toothbrush. I’m impressed with every bit of the entire device. In the box, it comes with a charging cable/base, travel case, and a single brush head. Additional brush heads cost about $25 for a set of three depending on where you shop. A little pricier than a standard toothbrush but for a more thorough clean. The handle feels comfortable in my hands. I can twist and turn it to suite the angles of my teeth very easily. It’s a bit bulkier than a standard toothbrush but it’s comfortable and the cleaning is well worth the couple moments it takes to get accustomed to it. Brushing 2-5 minutes a day, twice a day, a single charge should comfortably last you close to two weeks. I recharge mine on a weekly basis (9 days at most) so have yet to run out of power. I never noticed how much pressure I’ve applied while brushing until this brushes’ pressure sensors indications. The sensors went off so much at first, I suspected something wrong with the toothbrush. With a little trial and error, I feel as though my brushing has become more thorough and effective. There are three cleaning modes: Clean, White, and Gum Care. All modes have a helpful timer indication to let you know when each quadrant of your mouth is clean so you can move on to the next. The Gum Care mode has an extra minute added with lower intensity. It may be in my head, but I believe this has helped my sensitive gums and has allowed me to eat things that I have otherwise always been cautious of (chips, apples, and almost anything hard). Bottom line is I plan to purchase one of these for my wife… It’s that good!

I wanted to wait until my break in period was done and I got used to the Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 5100 before reviewing. This is my first sonic electric toothbrush and it took a little time getting used to it and properly learning how to brush my teeth with it. I am extremely impressed and absolutely love it. The ProtectiveClean 5100 comes packaged with a charging cable/base, travel case, and a single brush head. Some of the things I really love about the too brush are: • The break in period for new users to get used to the toothbrush. • The pressure sensor that lets you know you are brushing too hard. • The 3 brush modes (Cleaning, Whitening, and Gum Care). • The quadrant timer to let you know how long to brush a section and to move onto the next. • Smart brush sensor to let you know when it is time to change to a new brush. • Multiple brush types available and they work with the pressure and smart brush sensors. • Small charging base with audible beep to let you know it is charging. • Fast battery charging and long lasting charge. The Sonicare ProtectiveClean 5100 is not too big and it is lighter than I expected. It is comfortable in your hand and very easy to brush your teeth with. The brush button and mode button are easily accessible. My only minor issue with the ProtectiveClean 5100 is that the included brush is kind of small. My wife already had a Sonicare toothbrush and had a few different brush types so it was not a big deal. Each time I use it my teeth and mouth just feel amazingly clean. No other toothbrush I have used in the past has cleaned like this one. I will never buy any other kind of toothbrush ever again.

This toothbrush has a light-weight battery that charges fast. It really helps that there is a built-in timer for me to know when to stop brushing. There's also a sensor in the brush that vibrates differently from the active vibration to alert you that you are brushing too hard. Sometimes I forget to change the brush heads when you're supposed to, so I'm glad there's an app to have to give me reminders to change the brush heads.

    Just Fabulous Power Toothbrush

I have used power toothbrushes for many years. This one is the best so far. The brush head itself is designed in a very smart way so that you can easily clean your teeth AND gums (without hurting the gums). I actually use two different power toothbrushes every day and also a manual brush. One gets my gums and the next others are more for my teeth (with whitening toothpaste). By the way it is a great idea to have a water pick type device as well and I find it does better than flossing. This brush can do a lot of different things although it is simple to use. It has three modes: cleaning, whitening and gum care mode. The head design is key and feels so great on my teeth. It has an indicator for to help you know when one part of your teeth is good to go and you can move on – I liked that feature a lot. It also indicates when you should replace the brush head – I’ve never seen that type of indication before – super. I do realize I might see the brush head needs replacement sooner. I think it is a great idea since I tend to not pay attention to brush head replacement. It also has a battery status indicator. Some models don’t have this and I miss it on those; although it seems to not be so vital it is an important feature not found on cheaper products. The mechanism for this brush is tried and true, I have had other products from Philips Sonicare and they are constructed ruggedly and I have not had one break on me. I highly recommend this unit.

    Big Dissapointment

I'll start off by saying that previous owners of Sonicare toothbrushes are probably accustomed to the design of these units and therefore happy with how they work. Personally, I've been a competitor 'B' owner for decades and use that experience as my basis. Pros: Lithium Ion powered which means it charges fast, holds the charge a very long time and I would expect the toothbrush to have an extended useful life. The charging stand is not orientation specific - meaning you can face the brush in any direction when mounted. Cons: I find that the standard brush attachment that came with this unit was too small offering very little coverage. I never feel like I'm getting a thorough cleaning and may it very well be due to the basic brush. I would have preferred a sampling of at least one of the upgraded brush attachments to compare to. Bad marketing decision to not include one. Too slender with no appreciable grip to the handle. So it's easy to drop if not careful. A really bad design decision. The LED charging indicator system is a bit wonky and not clearly explained. As a matter of fact, the instructions inside the box were a bit 'thin' all the way around. This toothbrush operates at such a high vibration speed that it is prone to making a real mess by way of flinging toothpaste. The cleaning modes control the operational duration but doesn't appear to do anything different in terms of speed or polishing cycling. Another bad design decision. * As I have already mentioned, for those people that have been 'raised' on using Sonicare - they will probably appreciate this brush. Coming from competitor 'B' - where you can adjust the speed pattern and the grip is far superior - I can only defer this toothbrush to those already sold by the Philips design philosophy. It wasn't what I was expecting.

The toothbrush has a great look to it. I love the matte black finish. The matte finish also feels nice in the hand as you use the product. It's not a grippy-type finish, but it's nicer than the standard toothbrush feel. It also is nice to look at on the bathroom counter. What I don't understand, though, is why the brush heads are not available to match. They are still white, which is a little off-putting, considering the slick look of the unit itself. The brush has a clear cover, which covers the head completely. This is a nice feature. Previous toothbrushes that I have had had a snap-on cover that wouldn't stay on the head. The brush head itself I wasn't as impressed with. It was a little small for me. It could take some getting used to but, if there's a choice when I get ready to replace the brush head, I will look for one with more surface coverage. The other drawback was that, to use the travel case, you have to remove the brush, which wasn't the easiest to do. Even with the few minor drawbacks, I wouldn't hesitate to purchase this unit again.

This is not the first Philips Sonic toothbrush I’ve had but it certainly is the best so far. It feels good while brushing and really seems to be doing what it promises: take care of my gums, make my teeth cleaner and whiter. I will not lie that I can only know for sure after at least a week or so of use but right now, it looks and feels cleaner than usual. If you never used a sonic toothbrush, you can be sure that it is much better than manual ones. They are efficient and this model guides you on time and pressure you must use to clean your teeth correctly. I am very satisfied so far. It has pressure sensor and you can use different snap-on head replacements for different functions but the one that comes with it will probably do what you need. It does for me. As long as it lasts like the previous one I had, I don’t think there is anything to dislike about this toothbrush. It seems to work even better than before and it feels lighter and more comfortable too. I was happy with the previous one and much happier about this. I’m positive it won’t let me down.

This toothbrush is pretty great. My teeth are cleaner than with any manual toothbrush I've used. I like that it signals every 30 seconds to let you know it's time to change quadrants of your mouth. The charge lasts for a really long time and the carry case is really great for traveling.

Having owned Sonicare toothbrushes for years, I found this one to be a perfect middle ground between their more expensive models and the cheaper options. The ProtectiveClean 5100 is sleeker and lighter then a cheaper model Sonicare I have owned. I like that they included 3 cleaning modes allowing you to do daily cleaning, whitening, and gum care. This model also features the pressure sensor my more expensive model had. The pressure sensor alerts you when you are applying too much pressure by pulsing, a nice touch. Philips includes a chip on the G2 brush head now to track brush life independent of the handle. Some may see this as a way to encourage more frequent replacement of the heads, but there is nothing preventing you from attaching a brush head without a usage chip. I personally like the tracking as sometimes I forget to check the wear indicators on the bristles. The Sonicare 5100 also includes a travel case and charger. I think this model is a perfect for someone looking to try an electric toothbrush or upgrading from a lower cost model.

I’ve been using a popular competing electric toothbrush for my daily brushing needs for at least a few months. I was happy with the brush I was using, but I’m even happier with this Philips Sonicare. The brush heads of the electric toothbrush I had been using are round, operate by rotational oscillation, and had a much lower oscillating frequency than the Phillips Sonicare. This results in two noticeable and important differences. The brush I had been using felt sort of like a jackhammer in my mouth; a rough experience. The Sonicare, on the other hand, feels soft and light, though at times the bristles tickle my gums. Secondly, the design of my older brush heads was such that it tended to float right over deep crevices in between my teeth, requiring extra work. The Sonicare, however, with its long bristles and side-to-side oscillation, does a wonderful job of cleaning these crevices on a single pass. The higher oscillation frequency of the Sonicare has the unfortunate side-effect of flinging more toothpaste out of my mouth (and onto the vanity mirror and other surfaces). My older electric brush came with a covered cradle for brush heads, whereas this Sonicare does not; a feature I would have liked to have. The 30-second quadrant timer indication is slightly disappointing, and can potentially be confused with the pressure warning, both of which my previous brush handled better. In general, though, this brush has a nice set of features which most people will likely find entirely adequate. Despite some minor shortcomings, this Philips Sonicare provides the best home teeth cleaning experience among the solutions I’ve tried, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone with teeth.

This is my second Phillips Sonicare rechargeable toothbrush and if you've never had one, just get it! They are so convenient and easy to use. This model is a little bit of a step up from my previous model. Battery life has always been great with these. Features and modes are cool at first but if you're like me you will seldom (if ever) change it after trying them out when you first use it. This one has a pressure sensitive feedback that will warn you if you are using too much pressure and train you to stop doing so. For the price point, I think this is the best model to get too. It has a little less fancy charger and case but they work. Not worth the money to go up to the DiamondClean in my opinion.

I have the black version of the Sonicare 5100. The toothbrush came in light packaging with the brush, brush head, travel case and charger, along with documentation. The packaging was nice and neat. The brush itself had a little bit of a charge but I went ahead and charged it overnight. I have not had to recharge it as of yet. The buttons for the on and settings have a rubber coating over them and are super sensitive to the touch. I have accidentally turned the brush off during brushing due to putting to much pressure on the buttons while brushing. I do wish that the sensitivity would be a little less. There are three modes of brushing clean, white and gum care. The brush head does not sit flush on the main part of the brush. I have tried pushing it on the main handle a little more but that still has not helped. The box states that it has a pressure head but while brushing I do not feel that it cleans the teeth as well as previous models, but it still does a good job getting them clean. The brush head is a little hard and rattles hard when putting a little pressure on the teeth. I would recommend doing a light touch when brushing. I do love the Sonicare line and would recommend the brush but keep those little things in mind. I say its a buy.

This is my first electric toothbrush. I wasn't sure what to expect after using a traditional toothbrush for years. After cleaning my teeth and gums with it, my mouth felt cleaner than when using a traditional toothbrush. It tingles and felt a little weird at first, but I eventually got used to it. When putting toothpaste on the brush head, be sure to put it inside your mouth before turning it on. If not, you will get splatter all over your bathroom mirror and wall. Be sure to turn it off before taking it out of your mouth as well. I didn't find this in the instructions. I had to learn it the hard way.

The Philips Sonicare is a decent and capable electric toothbrush and being a new user of electric brushes, I can attest that it is quite comfortable to use event if this is your first one. It has a feature that increases the vibration of the brush as you brush more and more, which helps getting accustomed to the new system. Also, they have a variety of heads for different needs which is very good. The charging station is small and sleek, and it charges quite quickly. My one disappointment is when the brush rests on the charging station, it is very easy for me to tip it over - I needed to place it someplace out of the way. Overall it's a very good toothbrush.
