Great device, but setup is a little tricky

As someone who has had a dishwasher flood more than once, a hot water tank leak, and an AC dehumidifer overflow, I have learned the hard way about water leaks. I've used simple "dumb" alarms for years, but they only work if you're home to hear them. And leaks unfortunately do not happen on your schedule. That's why these Phyn Smart Water sensors are a great idea--they'll alert to you a problem anywhere, anytime, so you can can take care of it in time to minimize damage. They also give reassurance if out of town as well, so long as you might have someone to be able to turn your water off.
The box is small and comes with everything you need. The batteries are included and were fairly easy to install. Then you install the app (Android/iOS) for setup. This is where things got just a bit tricky. It wants to you scan the QR code on the bottom of each device as part of the process, but it engaged my Samsung S20+'s flash, which washed out the picture so much that it couldn't read the QR code. The entire process for me ended up being the backup methods as the primary ones never worked. I had to connect my phone to an ad hoc network generated by the device itself, ignore the "no internet" pestering Android notifications, and then proceed through the app to type in my security key for my wifi so it transmits it to the device. The documentation did warn that those with mesh networks might have additional steps, but I don't think any of my difficulty had anything to do with it being a mesh network, and just the fact that the camera wouldn't read the QR code.
After that, it sets up a household. I used all default settings throughout the process, and did the same here, using the default home 1 name. It then asked if I wanted to set up another, but when I set up the other device, it wouldn't let me use that name, so I ended up with 2 houses in my locations, one for each. So I had to delete one whole household, and redo it from within the app's other add device button. A bit frustrating, but I do have a good handle on the process now I've done it multiple times! And now both units report under the same household.
Once done, you place them and let it passively report to you. It's nice because it gives you humidity data as well, which is useful apart from the water functionality. It communicates via both SMS and app alerts. I've really like these so far, and now I know better how to set them up more efficiently I'll get more to cover some other locations.
In short, these are a very smart purchase and work really well. The whole experience is really only marred, slightly, by the setup experience. It would have been just fine if it used the secondary method and ditched the QR code and device code on the bottom as the ad hoc network method was relatively easy and foolproof. Based on my experience of leaks, water sensors are a smart buy for any homeowner, and these do a great job providing a sense of security about water leaks. Definitely recommended.

The Phyn Smart Water Sensor is a Wi-Fi ( 2.4 GHZ) enabled leak detector that can send text alerts to your phone when it detects water. It is shaped liked a hockey puck and it about the same size. There are three metal contact points on the bottom of the puck that when they come in contact with water will cause the puck to chirp and send an alter to your phone. In review:
Set up –
This was a mixed bag. I had two Phyn pucks to set up. This is accomplished through the Phyn app. The app will guide you through the process. This is where I ran into the first problem. There is a QR code and identification code on the bottom of device. The app will first ask you to use the QR code. No matter what I did, it would not register the code. If that does not work, you can enter the 6 digit identifying code below the QR code. Well, that did not work either. Luckily, Phyn has a built-in feature that picks up the unit via Wi-Fi and that was successful. After the set up of the first puck, I moved on to the second Phyn puck . The app asks if you want to add another device. I ran in the same exact issue as the first puck – neither the QR code nor identifier code would work. Perhaps because there were review models, very odd. Everything seemed to be working with the set up of the second Phyn puck but the app asked me to create a new home. I already had my home location set up and I was jut trying to add it to the the existing home. The app stopped me from moving forward. I closed out the app and saw that it had created a second home location. Both pucks were working but I wanted it to be in one home location. There is some poorly documented instructions in the help section for deleting the device and home but I just could not get the puck to uninstall properly. After finally getting it uninstalled, I was able to reinstall it under the main home and everything worked.
Performance –
Well, it works. It does sense water relatively fast .There is some latency between when it senses water and send an alert. The latency appears to be inconsistent so there can be a lot of causes that are not necessarily related to Phyn. You can also set alerts should temperature or humidity go out of a certain range. The out of the box default settings for the temperature and humidity are too broad so I had to dial in the alter thresholds.
Mobile app –
I was not thrilled with the app. The set up was not good and the app does not do much other than tell you about the read outs of the Phyn puck. Does it work, sure but it really had a feel of being unfinished. There is no 3rd party integration. In this day, why would any manufacturer not have Google, Alexa, IFTTT or a Smartthings integration option?
So the big question is would I recommend it? The short answer is no. The Phyn water sensor does exactly what the manufacturer claims it does. The problem is the problematic set up, limited app and the lack of 3rd party integration. While product itself is built well, I just cannot see why I would buy this over another product that has 3rd party integration. These types of products are not new, look at Alert Labs or Smartthings – they all work with 3rd parties. Sorry Phyn, you are just not ready for prime time.

The first thing I always review is the packaging the product comes in, because well...I'm a sucker for a good design. This packaging/instructions were well thought out and overall are nice and easy to understand. The product looks pretty sleek and is compact enough to fit anywhere you'd want to monitor water issues.
I didn't give this 5 stars because the initial setup with the app was a little more difficult than I thought it would be. The QR code you're supposed to scan at the bottom of the devices took a few tries for me to scan and afterward, I was having a hard time getting them to connect to my Wifi, even though I was standing next to my router like suggested. The setup probably took 25 minutes.
The app itself is pretty easy to use. It gives recommendations on when you should be alerted for high and low humidity issues. It took about 10 minutes of educating myself to understand the importance of keeping low and high levels in check. I really like you can also see the temperature in the app too.
I placed one device underneath my kitchen sink and one in my basement, which is very much a true "Pittsburgh basement". So it gets pretty damp and potentially wet when it rains or snow melts. I love the peace of mind I have knowing I'll be alerted of any water issues when I'm away or just upstairs.
All in all, I think these devices will be super useful and helpful! I hope the battery life lasts. It does say at least 2 years, which I think is pretty decent. Highly recommend adding to your smart home arsenal.

Setup DISASTER

As another person stated it is a PAIN to setup. I'm very good about setting up WIFI devices but this thing is the worst.
Your asked to scan the QR code but due to the shiny surface on the bottom it's impossible , tried over and over and over.
You can bypass the QR code by entering 6 numbers next to the code. EVERYTIME I entered the #s it read wrong numbers and then sent you back to the apps. home page. Tried with caps on and off a dozed times with no luck.
It also disabled my phones wifi showing an exclamination point next to my signal strength.
Reboot the phone to re-connect to wifi. I seriously spend well over an hour doing this.

I had the Phyn Smart Water Sensors connected to my home wireless network and set up in the Phyn app in less than 10 minutes - and much of that was spent creating my account as I do not have any other Phyn products. The sensors included AAbatteries which made the process even smoother.
The Phyn app is very slick and configuring the alerts for my water sensors was straightforward. In addition to the water alerts, you can also configure temperature and humidity ranges for other potential warnings of damage to your home. I chose to put my sensors under the kitchen sink and under my front load washer - and I plan to add another to put under the dishwasher, or possibly purchase the sensor extension cord which I could feed into dishwasher cabinet next to the sink. The alert for water leaks was almost instantaneous to my phone.
The only negative here is they don't appear to have a SmartThings integration. It would be nice to have them be a part of my pre-existing SmartThings system for coordinated actions and alerts.
Overall the Phyn Smart Water Sensors give me a really high degree of confidence in my ability to prevent damage to my home in the event of a water leak - even without their shutoff system, these sensors alert you to the water leak right from the start so you can clean the mess or shut off the water (or both!)

The sensor you never thought you needed

The Phyn Smart Water sensor is the add-on you wish they included with your water heater or sump pump. I'm so glad it's available in this easy to use hockey puck sized device. The sensors are great and relay a lot of good info; the app is another story.
I had quite a bit of difficulty getting the app to function properly and setup the devices. It crashed a couple of times to begin with. It asked me to scan the QR code, but kept coming up with an error. When that failed, it asked me to input the code under the QR code; it said the code was invalid. Next I had to connect to the device's Wifi and I was finally able to make headway and get it connected. I followed the same final procedure for the second unit and that was it.
I placed the units in different bathrooms to begin testing them for a few days and see what kind of information they collected. I set the humidity to max out at 60% and the temp minimum to 50F. Being almost Summer, it got quite humid in the bathrooms and sure enough, I received both a notification and a text that the humidity is at or above 60%. From the app, I could see the line chart displaying the temperature and humidity level several times per day. Once the levels went below the thresholds, I received another message saying the alerts have been resolved. Placing it in water caused an audible alarm to go off and an alert sent to my phone. I like that this will effectively monitor if you have a situation with some trouble spots in your home and let you know asap. It takes 2 regular AA batteries and they could last up to 2 years so that's convenient.
I really enjoy the peace of mind these sensors have created and can think of many ways they could be of use around the house. My only issue is the app needs work to make the setup process easy. Otherwise, I never knew how much I needed them until now.

I have a phyn plus and two of these sensors. The devices require a 2.4 Hz network, which I created, and is use by the phyn plus and other IoT devices. However, these things cannot connect. After many tries I managed to have them remain for a month, and now they lost their connection and I cannot get it back. Tech support is all to happy to blame your network setup on their subpar product. Stay away until a better WiFi receiver is used. Too bad I'm outside the return window, this thing would go back ASAP.
