    Feature Packed, Sometimes Painful

There are only so many expectations you can have from a single DIN unit, and from that perspective, this one is pretty great. The HD radio is surprising at the price point, the color customization is nice when you're trying to balance matching the car with readability, and the ability to grab from a USB stick or iPod is fantastic. It would be nice if the display had some more room for information, as seeing the first 20 characters of a song, album, station, or menu option gets pretty old pretty quickly. It seems that the tiny buttons could actually be bigger and not sacrifice anything else on the unit, so I'm not sure what made it so difficult on the inside. Even with all my whining, though, it's a good unit.

    Decent entry level head unit

I picked this head unit up for a great sale price. I just wanted a basic head unit with at least 4 pre-outs, HD radio and aux input. This unit fits the bill quite well, though there are a few minor annoyances. I am not too terribly impressed by the audio quality. This head unit replaced a 12-year-old Pioneer Premier head unit that had finally given up the ghost. That head unit had noticeably better sound quality from the internal amplifier circuitry. For me this won't be an issue, as I will be installing an amplifier very soon. One annoyance stems from what I thought would be a convenience. The head unit has a USB port on the front, and iPod compatibility. This is great as I can charge my iPhone while listening to music. But I almost never use the iPod app, I typically use di.fm/sky.fm or Pandora. But when I plug in the phone, the iPod app automatically starts playing. There is no way I have found to turn this off. The only way I have found to get around it is to go into my music app of choice and click play first, then plug in the USB cable. The other annoyance is the head unit does not have a dimmer switch wire, and does not have fine brightness control. So I set it on the "high" brightness to see it during the day, and in the evening I have to go back into the settings and change it to the "dimmer" setting. One final note. When researching I did not find a lot of information on the quality of HD radio compared to FM. What I did find led me to have low expectations. I must say though, I am quite pleased with HD radio. You can certainly tell when the head unit switches to the HD feed of a radio station that broadcasts in the format.

Great sound and easy to use

Had the original deck in my car replaced because the CD player had stopped working. Read the reviews online for this particular cd deck and I found that this was a wonderful investment. It's stylish, you can customize the colors, it's easy to use, and delivers great sound. I have not had a problem with the system at all. I love that it tells me name of every song that comes on whether its on pandora or my local radio station. My car is 13 yrs old so this helps me stay up to date with new songs and you can even thumbs up or thumps down to songs on pandora without touching your phone. There is a button on it for that. Overall this was a good investment.

Good value for features, if you can figure it out

Bought this to replace factory stereo in Toyota Sienna minivan. I paid to have Best Buy install it, and that went great. I arrived at the store at 4pm and at 5pm drove away with new radio on and working. It stuck out a bit too far but I figured there wasn't much to be done about that. I was able to plug my android phone into the phone jack and listen to that. Played a CD also and all sounded good and came through the multiple speakers well, good base & balance. As it got dark, I noticed that the lights on the unit were way too bright. When I got home I went through the user guide carefully and figured out that I could pick literally any color for controls and display, so could set it to match other dials, etc, in the car. But there was no way to set the brightness. I searched online (Pioneer has a bunch of youtube videos) and followed a procedure described there, but unit didn't behave as described. It's just glaring, distractingly bright at night. Nothing to be done, except maybe set the color to dark blue. The other problem was that there was no separate HD radio source--just "Tuner". Seems they could have just had FM1, FM2, FM3, HD, ... like every other care receiver I know of. Instead there's some incredibly complicated sequence of steps you go through to decide whether you want the scan-for-stations function to find regular or HD stations so you can assign them to buttons, but this is nothing you could do while driving or without the manual. I thought I did it right but there's still no indication that I'm getting HD radio, which probably means I'm not, even though there are many HD stations here in the DC area. I just gave up, even though that's why I got this model and not a cheaper one. I know I should go back to BB and get them to help, but it's a hassle to make and appt. etc. If you get this one, see if you can get the installers to teach you how to fix all these things before you leave!

    Great sound for the money

Highly recommendable. You will love it! Sound quality is awesome, has so many different options inside the setting to be able to get the right sound you need on each vehicle. Also have some presets, but if you are picky with sound quality, you can touch all those settings and it will sound amazing! And so loud with high quality!!

Amazing for how much I paid

I bought this product on sale for around 50 and it has the features of a deck that is over $100. I love the color customization. You can customize the screen and buttons separately. Currently mine are set to Seahawks colors!! Another great feature is the USB and aux port. One of the things I don't like is how it automatically switches to and plays my iphone when I plug it in. I mostly stream from spotify and do not want to listen to my own music on my phone, so it gets annoying to have to stop the song and then go into spotify. The install was simple and as far as basic functionality, it's pretty easy to use.

I bought this after lookin at all of the ones at best buy. I like the look of it and you can change all the colors of the back grounds and matches my car. Sometimes navigating the menus is difficult but once I figured it out it was just fine.

I bought the DEH-X5500HD to replace an Alpine deck that cost 5Xs as much as the Pioneer and I think I have a better deck now. It has better sound, USB support that actually works and you can customize the colors how ever you want. The remote mirrors many if not all of the functions of the deck buttons. I like this deck so much I'm thinking of getting another one for my wife's car.

A step up from the stock radio

    |
    Posted .

For the price, this unit is great. I had to replace the stock unit in my car and I picked this one for the features that it had at its price point. I am pleased with the unit. The sound quality is good and like the display. There are 2 things that bring my vote down. The display allows you to show the clock and the track/frequency. This is nice, but the display does not have enough space to show 12, so from 12 to 1 it displays a zero. For example 12:15 displays as 0:15. The second thing is the aux in level, it can be adjusted, but it is still very low and on multiple MP3 players, I have had to turn the player up all the way and still turn the car radio up.

    Great Tunes

I bought this for my boat. So glad I did because it is everything I was looking for and in my price range. It was a deal of the day, so I compared the price at other stores, and I knew I had to buy it. It installs easily and sounds wonderful. The only drawback for me -- I am over 50, not an avid electronics guy, so the many functions takes me awhile to figure out. (I will let my teenage son teach me!) I bought a similar model for my son's truck. We love Pioneer stereos!

    Works well enough

My problem with aftermarket radios is that they always try to cram all these features in but they are always so hard to use. The buttons are small and I really have to play around with it to get it to do basic things. But thats true for all aftermarket radios, for this one it does a pretty good job all around, My only real complaint, which I wish I'd known ahead of time, was that the display is really bright which can be problematic at night, it doesn't dim as far as I can figure out. Otherwise does the job I ask of it.

Works great. I have had plug-in players with cords but now the only plug-in cord I need is for my iPod or iPhone. I like the fact that I can change the background color of the display.

Reposting so I can get extra points fo rht ereview. Still nothing to complain about. The best feature for me is still the USB input. I can put a lot of MP3 files on a 32 GB flash drive and it plays them all. Using the remote control makes finding songs even easier.

I bought this stereo to replace my stock stereo since my CD player had been broken for 2 years. I bought this stereo after looking over the reviews and saw good things about it! Let me tell you, the sound is very crisp and sounds GREAT! The only thing I would change is, the colors on the stereo are very bright at night. I keep the colors dark so it doesn't blind me while driving when it's dark. If you want a stereo that sounds great and looks great for a low price, I recommend this one!!!

I absolutely love this deck. The preloaded equalizer options are good as is, but the option to customize your own is what really sets this system apart. The screen looks amazing and is always readable, even when the sun is shining directly on it. My only concern is the lack of a mute button on the deck itself, but then again I rarely mute my music so it's not enough to deduct a star in my opinion.
