My 6-year-old son asked for this game and earned it via various odd jobs over the course of several weeks. I figured this was something that he'd play while I stuck to my more "grown-up" games like Titanfall or COD: Ghosts. Let me say that I was wrong - it is an enjoyable and engagement game for us both! My son would give it a 5, but there are a few details that compel me to downgrade it to a 4. The pros: This is a fun and slightly addicting game that incorporates the light-heartedness of PvZ with the action of a shooter game. Controls aren't perfect, but definitely passable, and the "death" animations are comical. The ability to "unlock" new characters and equipment make for great replayability and there are several different game modes to keep things interesting (from standard TDM or castle defense to the funny "gnome bomb" mode). I tend to "mute all" when playing, but conversations aren't anything like the flame wars sometimes heard on a CoD server - it's generally pretty laid back. If you are a kid, the level of play is good - every once in a while, someone will dominate but overall skill levels are fairly low. The cons: The downsides, while present, do not overly detract significantly from the overall experience. The character balance is decent, but certain characters outperform in most situations, while others are somewhat lackluster. The lack of an offline game mode is my biggest complaint, especially as the game ages and there are fewer players to fill up the games. I'm not sure how playable it will be a few months down the line as the popularity wanes. The character selection UI is average, especially with regards to seeing what upgrades do for you without having to go to the "sticker book". Fine for kids, but maybe nor for min/max oriented minds. All in all, a surprisingly refreshing game that is compelling for younger and older gamers alike. If you are a hardcore lover of shooter games, it may not be your cup of tea, but for the casual or family gamers, it is a fun diversion.

Picked up this game when it was on sale for $30 and haven't regretted it for a second. I love the visual style with the Plants vs Zombies aesthetic. Cartoony but not kiddy. Warning: if you love the old Plants vs Zombies tower defense games on mobile/PC, this is a completely different type of game. But if you're into online shooters, I think you'll really love this. The game has a few different modes: Garden Ops (a co-operative, wave-based mode where you and 3 other players try to protect a garden against waves of computer-controlled opponents), Team Vanquish (team deathmatch), Gardens and Graveyards (a territory-control style mode where a team of plants tries to protect a garden from a team of zombies. If the zombies capture the garden, the plants fall back to protect another garden. This goes on until the zombies destroy a final objective OR the plants defend a garden long enough for a timer to go off), and Gnome Bomb (a mode I haven't gotten around to playing yet but I hear is fun). Playing these modes earns you in-game currency (coins), which you can use to buy card packs (kind of like baseball cards, where you don't know what's in it but you have a guarantee that each pack of a certain grade contains x number of this type of thing and at least y number of this type of thing). Opening packs earns you new characters and ways to customize your characters. There are SO many things to unlock, the game will keep you working towards things for a long time. Oh, and did I mention that all the DLC for this game is free? That means that you and your buddies will ALWAYS have all the DLC for it, unlike how it works in most other online games (Call of Duty, Battlefield, etc) where if your friends buy new maps but you don't have them, you can't play together. Highly recommended!

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare is a game that not many people expected to be good. I can assure you now, it's a fun game, so long as you enjoy third-person shooters. Also, it needs to be mentioned now that this is an ONLINE ONLY game. Why? I have no idea, and playing local split-screen ended abruptly when EA's servers decided to take a dive. This means that you'll need Xbox Live Gold and EA's servers to run well just to play local co-op, which is just absurd. However, the fact that I already have Xbox Live Gold and only had this issue once didn't take me away from the experience of what Garden Warfare is trying to achieve. PopCap is trying to bring the fun back into third-person shooters, and for the most part, they succeed. Garden Warfare is filled with fun and has plenty of game modes to keep you busy, but it's the crazy amount of character customization and Garden Ops (Horde mode) that really shine. Only on Xbox One are you able to play Garden Ops split-screen co-op, but it would have been nice if you were able to play online with 2 other human characters (like Left 4 Dead). I don't want to give too much away, or write a lot when real reviews can cover the specifics, but if you're on the fence about getting this game, I would say get it if you have GCU. If not, wait for a $10 price drop, because although there's plenty to keep you busy, it won't seem like much for certain people to justify the $40 price tag.

One of the best mobile gaming franchises ever..but

PvZ is one of my favorite mobile gaming franchises ever. I think it's PvZ and Angry Birds that are synonymous with mobile gaming. This game is a great rendition and play on the PvZ universe, but sadly comes through some rather poor programming and infrastructure issues. This is a game that relies almost solely on it's online experience. It is essentially a multiplayer death match style game where you are defending areas and getting "vanquishes" in the process. So what you would come to expect, or should for that matter, is seamless and efficient gameplay. Well unfortunately that is not what you get. Bear in mind I am running my home network on Comcast cable internet with plenty of bandwidth and my internet speeds are not an issue in any way. I stream video from Netflix and ESPN on a regular basis. This is a gaming issue. With that being said this game is most certainly broken. The glitch and laggy gameplay is maddening at times where I just shut it off and won't play again for days. Not to mention the amount of times EA's servers are just down completely is rather irritating. Whether the absurd amount of issue with the game would ever be fixed with a patch is beyond my knowledge, but just be aware that this is an issue and it has nothing to do with your console or internet connection more than likely. Just another ruined game by EA. This would be an easy 5 star, 4 star minimum game from me if it weren't so broken and my gaming enjoyment weren't so inconsistent. I was so excited when word of this game first hit the internet and I was able to see the first gameplay of it. But sadly it's been a 2 star kind of experience as it just didn't meet adequate standards as far as I'm concerned.

What I played of PvZ last night was pretty fun, nothing amazing, but fun. Then the SERVERS went down and stayed down all night for me. PopCap posted a message stating that they have to conduct maintenance on their servers. This is an ongoing problem with so many games today, especially anything running on EA servers. BESIDES the server issues, my game was locking up, while looking for a game to join. Every time after the servers went down, I would look for a game in hopes I could connect, the game would lock up at the menu screen, forcing me to back out to the X1 screen and force the game to quit. Until things run smoothly for this game, my advice is to save your money and put it towards something else. If they can turn this around quickly and you want something different in your library to play, I'd say go for it. I'm curious what the community for this game will look like 6 months after launch. I'm hoping they put out more maps and support the game, but time will tell. Pros: Multiplayer maps are designed well and have a good scale Reminiscent (to me at least) of Team Fortress 2 combined with Monday Night Combat. Cool art style and PvZ humor brought over to a FPS Cons: $40 price tag is a little steep for an online only game with not that many maps/game modes available at launch. Unstable servers and game instability on Xbox One at the moment.

This has got to be one of the best time killers for Xbox One, when it's working. Popcap Games did a great job mocking all of our current military shooters. The game is over the top, and silly; which is a nice change of pace. I find myself laughing when I die, and not ready to throw the controller. On the darker side of this game, its an always online game, which means you need to have Xbox Live even to play by yourself. It also runs on EA servers, which means that you will encounter a lot of the same connection issues you have experience on BF4. Couch co-op seems like it was tacked on, and does not offer a true couch co-op experience, like on games like COD, Gears of War, Halo, Borderlands, etc. Only one person can be logged in at a time, so the second player doesn't get any experience points at all. Also you can't do split screen multiplier. Overall great game for $40, even less if you are in Gamers Club Unlocked which you get an extra 20% off of new games. Couch co-op was a let down, and was not detail enough before the game released. I say great first effort for Popcap Games, but next time I expect a full couch co-op experience. Next time I will not be as understanding, I promise you!

I got really addicted to this game and normally I have a hard time playing FPS shooting games. At first I had a hard time learning to shoot, but that is just me, but the more I played, the better I became. It is pretty simple to learn and it is fun. They show you the different skills after you have unlocked them. I love the different game plays because you can play a quick game like team vanquish that would finish in 10 minutes or less. They just added a new game mode: Mixed mode with Team Vanquish and Gardens and Graveyards, which is fun because it combines the two modes. The upgrade packets give an incentive to play more because you want to unlock all the characters (or at least for me anyways). In addition, they have challenges for you to level up your character. I wish that you could play online with two players (on the same console). In addition, I wish that there is a multi-player lobby or something that would allow you to play with your own party. Overall, it is a fun and addicting game.

This game can be fun if you're looking for mindless action but, if your somebody that hates Multiplayer gaming or First Person Shooters, you probably want to pass on this. Garden Ops is a 10 round defense of a series of gardens and it is the only psuedo campaign you have but, it is a good way to get familiar with the mechanics of the game. The Graphics are great and if you've played the Tablet game, you'll no doubt recognize the classes... Well, most of them anyway. Don't worry though, each class of plant or zombies has several upgrades and special skills so you're not just running around playing the same boring shooting game. There are no night battles and and water zombies / plants need not apply. These Maps are straight up Daytime maps. There are multiple modes to the game play and I encourage you to try them all as you'll no doubt find plenty to do in this game. If you like comical gameplay that's great with friends or online, you've found the right game for you!

For the record, I'm a hardcore Battlefield, COD player. But I only bought this cause it was 39.99 and there aren't many games out for xbox one yet so i said what the heck. This game is like the flappy bird of xbox one, its so silly in many ways and you'll find yourself sitting there like why am i playing this but its very addicting. Its very Extensive for only 40 bucks, theirs 4 different types of plants and 4 types of zombies, but for each type you can unlock 5 different classes of each. The learning curve is very simple, when you unlock the special abilities they actually show you a short clip after on exactly how to use that ability. To me its a mix of COD style play mixed with Gears of War style (Capturing Bases). if you have the extra money and bored with other games I def recommend getting it. Kids would love it to. I'm 32 by the way.

I wasn't going to get this game with Titanfall fast approaching, but I am glad I did. The Plants vs. Zombies universe is in full effect here. The game has a unique personality that shines through. It plays very well, controls are simple. The game's "Garden Ops" mode is VERY similar to Mass Effect 3's multiplayer. 10 waves, an extraction at the end, powers mapped to buttons. It is a great time. The problem comes when you want to play vs. multiplayer. You cannot set up a lobby for your friends to join. You can be in an Xbox Live party, but when your party leader joins a session there is no guarantee you will be on the same team or even in the same game. Maybe the Xbox One March update will rectify this, but I am not sure. Still it is a very good game and with the discounted price it is worth it. I also heard there may be some free DLC in the near future.

This is a very solid shooter that is very fun and goofy at it's best. It's best is playing with the heart of a child and probably your son, daughter, niece, or nephew. Fun and for everyone. Every game should teach a lesson which this one does very entertainingly. That lesson is 'fight together or fail alone'. Keeping pace with your team in play is very important to survival no matter what you have equipped on your character. Say close and keep your eyes open. All that being said this is not a difficult game at all. It is simply fun. The simple gameplay, cutesy graphics, and visual gags keep players of all ages entertained. Best when played with young players fun doesn't stop at the controller. There are laughs to be shared with your team about success and failure in the gardens of war.

This would be a great $20 game. At twice that price I'm not as happy. Overall, what exists is entertaining but there isn't enough to hold nearly anyone's attention for too long. The Plants and Zombies teams are setup with a good difference in capabilities and tactics that at least gives some variety to the games but once you've mastered the basics there isn't really anywhere to go with it. Additionally I think it's really missing a tutorial of any sort to help the kids in the house maybe have a crack at this style of game, but the game assumes you already know everything there is to know about a team based FPS which I find confusing since I can't imagine anyone who plays any of the "serious" shooters is going to even give this a second glance and anyone who hasn't played them before is going to be mystified by just being dropped in a combat zone.

At first glance it may not appeal to hardcore fans. And that's okay. What this game does greatly is that it does not take itself too seriously. It's as simple as you want it to be. With that said, the online play is glitchy. Connecting to games shouldn't be as frustrating as I sometimes found it to be. There are special abilities to unlock, and once you've maxed out the special abilities, it's fun to become more acquainted with the different types of plants and zombies. I don't see much other than online play. There should be some kind of offline mode or story mode. Overall it's worth a grab whether you're a seasoned FPS fan or if you're a newbie. If you're a hardcore fan of the original PvZ game, you'll find some fun additions and quirks that will make you smile. Highly recommend it.

My 8yr old son put a number of games on his Christmas list. There was one he was super excited about. Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare was the one he couldn't stop talking about. We bought an Xbox One and the game the bundle came with was not OK for him to play. We bought him two games PvG was one of them. I should have done my research. Electronic Arts requires a service that requires a mandatory Xbox Live account to play *single player LOCAL games*. We're not talking multiplayer server facilitated MMORPG type games here. For my son to play a single player local game we need to buy a $60 subscription to Xbox Live. For his brother to play? Another $60. EA just lost a customer. A customer with two boys who love video games. Now to find what we can get for this stinker on eBay.

For those that like Call of Duty (online multiplayer), Zombie Warfare is like Call of Duty with the characters from the phone/tablet version of Plants Vs Zombies. It is nice they used the same artillary as in the previous game. It gives you a different angle to the original game. It includes a horde mode and deathmatch mode. Only played off and on the past few nights but I have found it to be a good game. I like that I can go on and just play instead of having to worry about leveling up all the time with Call of Duty. I like to think if it as the 'I can pick up anytime even if I'm not having a good day' kind of game. I gave it 4 stars because there are still some glitches in the game they could have fixed before launch (like the other night when somehow I died and respawned under the map).

If you loved the PC/Phone games and are into FPS games, then this game is for you. It's not a hardcore FPS game like Call of Duty, but more of a light-hearted game where you get to have fun taking sides and defeating plants (or zombies) as you rank your way to new character skins, weapon upgrades, etc. You will likely die... a lot, but you still earn coins to buy upgrade packs with every little thing you do from healing to assisting to getting vanquish streaks. It's fun! I, personally, dig CoD and other big name FPS games, but get tired of just dying from obsessive gamers who perfected the killshot so I decided to try something different and this game took the win! Check it out if you want a fun FPS game to play!

This game is surprisingly fun and easy to pick up. It is definitely aimed at more casual gamers as there isn't too much variety in characters and weapons. Characters do level up, but it feels nearly pointless as once you have your core abilities you have no motivation to level up higher. I feel like most of the time you're just being rewarded vanity items to customize the appearance of your character. It's also unfortunate that there isn't a mode where you just play as zombies cooperatively like in Garden Ops. Without being too critical, it really isn't a full fledged game and feels more like an indie game. Ultimately, you will get bored and move onto other games pretty quickly, but it is worth checking out as it is something that you can occasionally play to pass the time.

I love the Plants vs. Zombies (PVZ) tower defense game on my iOS. They are fun, challenging and pretty clever for having no 'dialogue'. Then when I heard EA and PopCap were taking Battlefield's engine and making a class based shooter game, I was sold. Thankfully with being a Gamer Rewards member via Best Buy, I was able to get the game for cheap. It's worth my $25. It almost feels like it should be a downloadable game, but it is still addictive. I love the different types of classes they offer (healer, tank, assault, sniper) but as either a plant or a zombie and with the series' trademark humor attached. Not as much customization as I would have liked, but it's one of those games you can always go back to. Although, with Titanfall coming out soon, better level up quick.

What with all the online multiplayer shooters out there, every now and then one comes along that should get your attention. One that is different, humorous, and fun to play with just about anybody of any age. This is the one for kids and adults to sit back, pick a plant or zombie, and just have a garden war with a few laughs for good measure! Great graphics and control, gameplay, good game modes and some of the most goofy characters seen on a multiplayer game, what could be better? Well, there is just one small issue: its online only!! This game has no offline mode or a campaign to be had. A small drawback, but we can't have everything sometimes. If you're looking for a kid-friendly online shooter, give this one a try! I believe you won't be disappointed! :)

I bought the xbox one version since it was the version that had offline multiplayer. I play the game with my 7 yr old son, and feel the game play is great for introducing him to first person shooters (well, really 3rd person) game play. It introduced him to cooperative game play, where each persons strengths make up the team and no one person can survive alone (I stressed the importance of getting your team mate up if they happen to get knocked down before doing anything else if possible). The game play is not too fast, but can get a little crazy the further you go. The characters are fun and the fact you can unlock characters and items via booster packs is cool. Overall, a fun game for young and old alike.
