PNY must be going down hill.

So, first let me explain something here. This entire endeavor started by purchasing a PNY XLR8 SSD at the store, after two days of not being able to clone my existing hard drive to it or install Windows 10 to it, it went back to the store. Instead of trying again, I just decided to upgrade my memory instead and picked up a 16gb set of the PNY XLR8 PC3-14900 to add to my existing 16gb of 1866MHz. After installation, by motherboard showed a memory check error and after working through that, the PC would only either blue screen or detect my original memory (tried multiple configurations including just the PNY PC3-14900 which blue screened), so the memory went back. While I was at the store, I saw that they were running a sale on the PNY Turbo Plus 64gb & 128gb flash drives; I should have known better...either way, I bought one 64gb & one 128gb, for the price they were hard to pass up. The 64gb Turbo Plus worked as soon as I plugged it in, however, the 128gb Turbo Plus would not be detected by my PC. After updating drivers, trying different USB ports (both 2.0 & 3.0) and looking through disk management, I decided to try another PC with Windows 7 instead of Windows 10. The Windows 7 computer wouldn't detect the USB drive either, so I then tried my Macbook Pro. The Macbook Pro actually recognized it, so with this small glimmer of hope, I decided to try formatting it and then connecting it to the Windows machines after format. This did not work at all; I tried both FAT and ExFAT and while it was still detected and usable by my Mac, the Windows machines won't even acknowledge the USB's existence. Looks like I'm going to have to return/RMA this as well. Is PNY slowly going downhill with their quality control? I think that it's somewhat ridiculous that I've bought 4 different PNY products and 3 of them were absolute failures. How is that possible? I have never had these many problems with their products in the past.

Initially I considered this flash drive based upon prior experience with PNY products. Once I saw it was on sale I jumped at the chance to grab it. This drive is really speedy and it offers ample storage space for whatever you may need. For example, as soon as I took it out of the package I immediately plugged it in and downloaded two full service packages for an old Windows machine. The device loaded both updates within minutes and still had ample room available. Once I was finished with updating the older Windows machine we own, I proceeded to use it to transfer several movies we had stored on this older machine and moved them to another machine. Once again the device worked like a charm loading those large files in a relatively short period of time and then offloading them even quicker. This is because the drive is compatible with the older USB 2.0 and newer USB 3.0 standards. Our old machine is USB 2.0 only however the new one has the USB 3.0 standards. This compatibility is completely transparent as the drive adjusts itself depending upon what kind of machine to which it connects. If you're looking for a relatively inexpensive flash drive to quickly move large files (or even serve as a temporary storage place for large files), then look no further. I highly recommend this PNY drive.

    Some Test Data

    Posted
    Warren

Here is some test data. I used linux and the dd utility to write and read a 1 GiB file on this drive using a block size of 4 MiB(*), using both USB3 and USB2. The results: USB3: Write 28.5 MiB/s, Read 56.3 MiB/s USB2: Write 26.2 MiB/s, Read 31.8 MiB/s Note that USB3 is not significantly faster than USB2 for writing. Writing speed is limited by the write speed of the memory, not the USB speed. On the other hand, reading is faster with USB3, because the read speed of the memory is faster than the transfer speed of USB2. This drive is relatively fast compared to some other name-brand USB flash drives of this size and price. I have seen some similar USB3 drives with write speeds as low as 4 MB/s. What's the point of USB3, you may ask? I have two of these drives. I got the first one to use with a set-top converter/PVR and I needed a cheap, fast drive that could keep up with real-time HD digital video recording. This works fine. I liked the drive so much that I bought a second to use with my laptop. A few notes: 1) Whatever flash drive you get, make sure you have return privileges in case the drive you get is too slow for your needs. 2) This drive is formatted FAT32 out of the box. Note that FAT32 limits file size to 4 GiB. If you plan to put large multi-media files on it you will probably want to reformat it to exFAT. (*) MiB is binary megabytes; that is, 1 MiB is 2^20 bytes.

I purchased this 128 GB flash drive because I have had smaller PNY drives and had no problem with them. The first one I purchased, I put photos from my cousin's wedding on it so I could get them off of my card. I attempted to also put them on a Google drive. Good thing I did because if I had not, I would have lost more than 850 videos and photos. Some of them did not pull off of the flash drive. Add to that, I had added photos my mom had taken and I had pulled files off of my computer because I had planned to take it in to get the screen fixed. I used it for about two weeks. The first drive had about 84 GB of information on it when it crashed and would not even be recognized by my computer. I took the drive to Geek Squad and they could not get anything from it either. In spite of that, I purchased another one because of the price and my past experience with the smaller drives. I put my mom's photos on this drive and was starting to create the video for my cousin and put photos together etc. The second drive lasted three days when it crashed. This time the computer recognizes the drive, but says it cannot be read. I called PNY and left a message asking for a call back. It has been two weeks with no call back. Time for me to call again!

I am often away from home for extended periods of time so this flash drive is perfect for taking files and photos with me that I may need to refer to or work on while away. I simply transfer anything I might need from my main computer to this flash drive and when I get to my destination, I can access whatever I need and put it on my laptop to work on. Or, I can plug it into a friend's computer if I want to share photos or documents. I recently scanned several albums of family photos, put all the photos on this flash drive and was able to transfer them to other family member's computers or burn all of the photos to a disc so that everyone in the family has copies of these family treasures. Some of the photos were very old and the album pages were beginning to deteriorate. The photos have been saved in the nick of time and will be passed on to other family members for years to come. Many of the photos can be enhanced, repaired or made larger for prints. Family members can also transfer several albums at once to their own flash drives. The size of this flash drive allows you to scan each album page and include several albums and keep them all on this one drive.

    Serously is fast...

Normally I don't write reviews often for products, and I generally take advertised specs with a grain of salt. But this drive was on sale and I wanted something that was affordable and had at least 128gb of space. Quite a few reviews suggested it was "fast" but upon using the drive, I was able to confirm myself that data speeds are quite good. Read speed I got when moving large files from the PNY drive to an internal SSD (tested over 500 MB/s read/write) using USB 3.0 were over 180 MB/s sustained which is considerably good and very close to advertised speeds. Write speeds to the drive for large files from the same setup were slightly slower than advertised at about 75-85 MB/s sustained but still considerably faster than your average flash drive. (Speeds are largely system dependent and will be considerably lower when plugged into a USB 2.0 slot.) Comes format as FAT32 but I would likely suggest changing it to NTFS for best support of large files. Also keep in mind that small files tend to transfer "slower" as rated by the system but overall this drive is very worth the money.

For a flash drive, the 128 GB of storage space is very reasonable for the price Best Buy sells this flash drive for. I have 2 of these flash drives and it's more convenient for me to store backups of my most important files on 2 of these flash drives than an external drive because it's easier for me to transfer my data files between 3 devices, carry the drive around in my pocket, and the transfers are easy and fast since it's USB 3.0. Also, I don't have to worry about the USB connecting cables that sometimes get knocked out of my USB ports like my external drives' cables often do and then I have to start the transfers all over again because they were interrupted by the cables being disconnected. I also don't have to worry about the USB cables breaking or shredding and according to Geek Squad, those cables aren't replaceable. Maybe I could find replacements on Ebay or something but that's more shopping and buying. If you're looking for storage that is more convenient. easier and practical, then this flash drive is an excellent choice.

A Fast USB 3.0 Flash Drive

I will start this by prefacing it with the fact that I got this at a screaming deal due to an incorrect hang tag at my local Best Buy. The person doing the hang tags did this unit at $59 on sale by mistake (the PNY USB 2.0 unit was on sale, not this one). When the clerk rang up the purchase and the full price of $159 popped up, I confirmed that that was not the price on the hang tag. Per Best Buy policy, the honored their incorrectly priced item! So, for the drive itself. I'm not a fan of PNY's sliding cover, but other than that, the drive is fast, large and works well on my USB 2.0 devices and screams on my USB 3.0 devices. It does get a bit hot with prolonged use, but I believe that to be true of all flash drives. Overall, it is performing the job I purchased it for and have been happy so far.

    Too thick for thin laptops

This looked like a sweet deal online. What the pictures don't show is the weird curve at the end of the drive opposite to the USB connector which makes it too thick to use with my Surface Book or Macbook Air. Also, it comes stuck in a plastic sliding protective case (can't remove it without the risk of breaking the drive) which adds even more girth to this little fatty. Anyway, if you have an ultra-thin or tablet/keyboard configuration, it *will* bend the USB connector or mess up your computer's USB port with regular use. Check out the picture. You'd think that in a world of thin devices, mfg'rs would take this into account. I'll probably use this on a desktop or older (thicker) laptop at work.

I purchased this flash drive because I needed to move several large files to and from several computers at work. I have an external hard drive but it is for my personal computer files and I didn't want to have to take it to work. So on Easter Sunday when I saw this flash drive was on sale, I thought it would be the perfect solution. However, when I took it to work and attempted to add files to the flash drive I got an error message informing me that the disk was full. But there was nothing on it... I did some internet research about this issue and found that this was a common problem. One site recommended formatting the flash drive so I tried it and was able to save my information. Then I took the flash drive to another computer to print out the saved data and was unable to open my saved files. This product is not dependable at all and I returned it.

The Turbo Plus and Attache4 units are the same part number, only the color is different according to PNY. I have a previous generation of this same unit and will compare it to that. 1. Size: the new design is smaller in ever dimension and has a lip which makes pulling it out of a usb port easier. 2. Design: the new sliding cover seems to work easier than the old design, and looks to have taken into account the main problem with the old design, which was that it would warp with age. 3. Capacity: PNY must have gotten smaller NAND chips to shrink the unit, but the size of the chips seems to be random. I bought two of these units and both formatted out to greater than 128gb. 4. Performance: I think these must be TLC NAND since there is a drastic drop in write speeds after a few seconds. They perform about 1/2 the speed of the previous generation. 5. Price: while the retail price has dropped, I would still only buy these on sale, which seems to be every other week.

So, I've been using thumb drives since 128MB USB 1.0 thumb/flash drives were consider the best. Yes 128MB, as in megabyte. That was many years ago obviously, so now I have been using a SanDisk 32GB 2.0 drive the past year or so to store my text and jpeg files on for college. I also have several GB of music and a couple MP4 video files on this same 32GB drive totaling about 20GB. It worked great, no issues. So I copied the 20GB worth of files to my laptop before copying onto my new 128GB 3.0 drive. It took maybe 8 minutes to copy from the old drive to my computer. Then when I copied the same files from the computer onto the new 3.0 drive it took just over a minute. So, to make sure, I copied a few more different movies and music totaling another 20GB and it still took only a minute! Wow! USB 3.0 is the way of the future guys! Streaming movies is fast, with no glitches. So spend the $50 and upgrade now - you won't be disappointed!!!!

After shopping for another flash drive, (largely to store videos to watch via USB on Samsung HD television) I was left with a sea of choices and brands to pick from. While many companies offer USB 3.0 compatibility and large storage sizes, what sold me on the PNY 128gb drive was it's compact size and slim housing. Past flash drives I have owned had thicker and larger outer housing which at times kept them from physically fitting into small or recessed USB ports on some devices. Not so with this drive. The small size works perfectly in cramped space behind my TV and the wall and only needs 2 inches or so to fit in the rear facing USB ports. The USB 3.0 helps greatly with speed and performs at similar levels as my 3.0 external hard drive. If your physical space is limited, this compact flash drive will get into all the small spots and offer great speed and high capacity as well.

These thumb drives are great to say the least. There processing speed is faster than I need, the quality one can feel right out of the package, the external casing is tough and going to hold up, the size is perfectly formed, compact but not stupid small, unlike many brands I have purchased. The sale pricing was the best I had been able to find, please note I was searching for quality products. I bought all of them, even one that was not the exact one on the sale, it was a newer version and being a 128 was a good deal more cost, they chose to override it for me. That's service and it feels good not to be jerked around, getting told we don't have that, you can go to another store, or order on line. I don't want to hear that, ever. If you have a sale have the product or make it right. Which is exactly what Best Buy did without question. I hope to catch them on sale again. Though I bought several, I would double up this time.

    Good Function--Questionable Exterior Slide Design

I have used many portable external storage drives including, Western Digital's Passport brand, up to 2 TBs. This PNY works seamlessly with my HP, Dell and Lenovo laptops and desktop. I have had no issues on uploading or downloading date. My only issue has to do with the external sliding design which exposes the actual USB insert port. I find this slide design cumbersome. If you don't grip the device properly on insertion the slide can move on insertion and make it difficult to insert the device into the USB slot without re-gripping the device. This takes some getting used to. This issue does not actually detract from the operation of the device, it is simply a little of a hassle on insertion and after some practice you get used to it. I would rate the device 4 stars out of 5 solely because of the "slide" issue. Otherwise--the device functions as you would expect and I am happy with it.

I needed a way to backup my cell phone data that's not in "the cloud." I bought this when it was on sale. So, I got it at a great price per GB. Plug and play. It plugs into the USB port of my Mac Airbook. It works fast in the USB 3.0 port, but also in the USB 2.0 port, although, a bit slower. No issues of being recognized by my laptop. A small red LED light blinks upon mounting, accessing and writing files. I find the light is difficult to see through to retractable cover, though, due to it's dark color. There is a tiny hole to attach a keychain loop or whatever else fits. Strongly recommend doing so to prevent loss of this tiny drive. Overall, a much more secure way to store files than on some remote server somewhere in another country or planet. No internet connection required!

Definitely a 5 star item. Data transfer is lightening fast. I love the fact that I don't have to get up and go do something for a while to kill time between transfers. It really is that quick. It's compact, easy to carry around, and sturdy. Sturdy enough that I've dropped it a few times on the concrete while juggling textbooks and supplies to pick it up and only see surface scratches. Then, every time I plug it in after a drop I'm anxious about damage to my data. But, it's never happened. Although, I wouldn't risk hitting it with a hammer to push the potential damage amount to the limits! The price is right too. I know it's not just PNY that's dropped its prices, but awesome none the less. Storage use to be so darn expensive and now it's so inexpensive it's almost foolish to not buy a backup drive of some sort. I would recommend this drive to anyone!

Purchased this item with the belief that it was the turbo plus model. According to PNY the item you'll receive is really the Attaché drive and not the turbo plus model. Yes drive is faster than a 2.0 usb by 10X but don't expect the "up to 190mb" speeds promised in description. Speed is around the 50mb range. So drive is Turbo but not Turbo Plus. All Turbo Plus shelves in store are incorrectly stocked with the wrong model numbers as well. Labels on shelves show plus model numbers but different model numbers are hanging up so be careful what they deliver to you. Result for me was keep it, or take a refund. They won't send you correct drive as a replacement. I tried several phone calls and in store to get the correct item. I reluctantly keep the drive as I needed one. Drive for Turbo speed is fine. Still much faster than 2.0
