Granted, I have never owned floor-standing speakers before. Even so, some of my previous bookshelf speakers have been quite up to more demanding standards. With that said: These Polk speakers represent the biggest leap I have ever made in upgrading my living-room audio system. The most striking difference I noticed right away was when playing movies and TV. These speakers seem to be particularly well-suited to capture and reproduce that particular, complex sonic mix of voice, scene and set, special effects, and soundtrack audio. It is all delivered with a rare degree of clarity and transparence. Trebles are crisp and clean. In fact, sound comes through with such an immediate acoustic presence that I have sometimes had to press the mute button to verify whether a sound such as a ringtone or even a police-car siren was part of the soundscape or part of the "real world." As for lower frequencies, there is no phony "bass boosting" to give you an illusion of full-bodied sound when the frequencies in question are really in the lower mid-range. Instead, prepare for a "rumble" to go through the room when the audio frequency really calls for it, but without causing the speaker chassis to vibrate. Now Polk says these speakers work best when bi-connected to the audio system (two sets of speaker cable each). So I did bi-connect the speakers to the two pairs of speaker outlets that come with my receiver, an old-school, 2.0-channel Sony STR-DH130. This receiver has controls for volume, treble, and bass to adjust sound; that's it. And with these Polk speakers bi-connected, the resulting experience leaves nothing to be desired for high-end audio enjoyment. My CD player is an Onkyo C-7030, which is by all means capable of picking up the most varied and subtle nuances of what it plays. When I paired it with these Polk speakers, it, too, set the bar for my idea of "audiophile" quite a bit higher! Unfortunately, with these speakers, limitations of the playback source are also more clearly revealed now. Then again, maybe that's just me already being spoiled by the otherwise great, sometimes outright stunning results!

I was running a pair of Polk T50's, a sufficient pair of speakers in the interim. However, I knew the time would arrive when I wanted to upgrade. Most suggest replacing the center speaker first, but I'm a sucker for a good set of tower speakers. Initially going with the T system all around, I began my upgrade by purchasing the Polk SS-55's. I considered the 60's, but the major difference between the two is the 60's provide more bottom-end than the 55's. Since my current system includes a pair of Polk subs, bass isn't an issue. Once I got these hooked up, I noticed an immediate, almost jaw-dropping improvement. The entire system came to life, the imaging and depth provided by these speakers is incredible. I have been around Polk products since the late 70's as an audio salesman. Purchasing equipment at cost allowed me to experience speakers from various manufactures such as Bose, Quisonic, DCM, Boston Acoustics, and Polk (heck, I've even owned a pair of high-end electrostatic speakers). That said, you might spend a serious amount of cash on another speaker, but the 55's hold their own against much more expensive competition, and therein lies the issue for many in the "audiophile" category... that Polk provides an excellent product for those who don't have $1500 to sink into speakers, and if they did, chances are the Polks are better. If you desire a great pair of speakers at an affordable price, I recommend you consider the SS-55's. Complement them with a quality receiver, center-channel, a sub, and a pair of rear-channel speakers, and you can't go wrong.

I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered the Signature line in BestBuy. What was unfortunate was the demo systems for the T- and S-series Polk products as well as the demo station for the 2 Klipsch lines they carry in-store were both of such horrific quality that you couldn't judge the speakers by the demo station. My iPhone actually sounds better (and I'm not kidding) than either demo station did. I've had Polk in the past, and decided to go with the Signature line. The salesperson accidentally put half of the T-line in my cart without my noticing (wow), and so I can say for sure (having tested them out before returning them for the Signature line) that the T-line is great, especially for the price. But the Signature line really does out-shine it. I couldn't be happier with the sound clarity and value. I went ahead and utilized my Onkyo TX-RZ730's autotune function before I bothered trying to manually set it up myself. Low and behold, it did a superior job to what I was able to accomplish manually. (Bass seemed low at first compared to what I'm use to...but if you trust in your modern receiver's ability to get it right, and give it a try for a few days, you'll likely find that you get more clarity and better response than you'd get on your own...an opinion I got from a pro.)

I bought these after setting up a vinyl listening rig. Original configuration was an Orbit custom TT, pro-ject pre-amp, and NAD 316bee into a great pair of bookshelf speakers bought at Best Buy. I bought the bookshelf speakers on the classic advice of spending for “quality” over size, dollar for dollar, etc. To be fair - the bookshelves were and are technically a tiny bit better. Clarity, separation and so on, but at the end of the day I always felt like the system was just not quite there in terms of the overall experience. I bought these towers for about $150 less than I paid for the bookshelf speakers, bi-wired them, and ... wow. To be sure, a little bit less precise, but more than made up for in terms of creating a bigger sound with more low-end. Now my basement escape-the-world listening cave has the full feeling I was after, and I have repurposed the bookshelves in a more appropriate, smaller space. These speakers are a great match with the 316bee. Amazing sound at a great price point. Will I probably find some reason to try to step things up again later? Maybe, but I don’t think that will be for quite some time.

This is my second set of Polk Audio speakers. The first set (2 towers, 2 surround, center and subwoofer) where purchased at least 15 years ago and still sound good. I have donated them to a friend. I purchased the complete Signature Series (S35, S15, S55) to replace the donated set. The look, the price and the sound make these an amazing set of speakers. My previous set sounded fine until I installed these. This set is the sound center for my home entertainment system. The center speaker brings the dialogue into the room. When listening to music, especially jazz or classical, I can close my eyes and feel that I am at a live performance. Play some Rock and you can make the whole house vibrate (without turning it up to its highest setting). Pink Floyd never sounded so good. A Denon receiver drives the speakers and after calibration created an excellent sound field that makes almost any seat an ideal listening position. I used 12 gauge (oxygen free) wire and installed banana clips on the ends for easy installation and conduction. This was an excellent purchase that has taken my home theater entertainment system to the next level.

These are my first entry level HiFi speakers. Much better than budget Sony speakers I had before. I am very happy with them. I would highly recommend for movies. I have not tested for music yet since I do not have HiFi music tracks to play. Go to a Bestbuy store and listen to them before buying. I compared 5-6 different speaker brands. If you are mixing them with other speakers in your HT system, make sure that you set your receiver settings correctly. I had to set them as large speakers so that they can do most of the job themselves instead of my cheap subwoofer and central channel speaker. Correct settings made huge difference. If they do not sound good to you, it means that you set them wrong. I am not sure if these things break-in or my ears are getting used to them, but after I month of listening they sound fantastic. Either way, I am pleased. Do yourself a favor, get them, enjoy yourself.

Great loud speaker, but needs to be paired with the proper sub. I bought the standard Polk 10” powered sub and it just doesn’t supply enough clean low end without sounding off. Planning on adding a second sub going with the Polk 10” that matches the rest of the signature series with the power ports. Happy with the purchase, but it would’ve been much nicer if the display at Best Buy was actually working so I could’ve made this decision before purchasing or before the 14day return period ended. Speakers needed a good breaking in before I could fully decide. Have these setup with the Polk S35 center channel, and S15’s for my rear in my HT setup. The highs are super clear and crisp, just need to even out the lows.

I bought the complete 5.1 Polk Signature Series along with a Yamaha audio/video home theater receiver and these speakers were the perfect match. These speakers not only look fantastic but they're the best sounding speakers I think I've ever owned. My last system was a Sony and these Polks were half the price but equivalent to, if not better than the Sony. The Yamaha kicks out 400 watts and when I'm watching movies I have em cranked and you wouldn't believe how great they sound, at any level. I have only owned these several weeks so while I won't be replacing them anytime soon when the time comes I'll be looking at Polks again.

I just bought these speakers along with the center speaker S35 and Of course I went with the upgraded and got the PSW 125. I have a little older Sony receiver that says it puts out 100 watts. It was a big box store all in one box set-up that I've been wanting to upgrade for some time. I don't know a lot about electronics, but I do love listening to my music loud and clear along with watching movies where you can hear the bullets slicing through the air or the rustle of leaves from a tree very far in the background, and this folks provides that and much more. I have heard all my hair bands in a new light. I hear musical instruments in the classics that I have never known were being used in that song. I am beyond ecstatic about this purchase and what it sounds like in my house.

    Towers vs Bookshelf

I first bought the Signature Series 15 bookshelf speakers, and I already have bookshelf speakers for my home theatre system. The speakers are almost 20 years old if you can believe that. They were of course handed down from my parents. Surprisingly the older speakers sounded same compared to the new S15s. So i decided to take them back and buy the S55 Towers. I'm very satisfied with my purchase. They do hold its own without the need of a subwoofer but clear out the bass during intense scenes. I'm very satisfied with the towers. I must have looked at so many Blogs about differences with towers and bookshelf and most of them were correct. I do think towers in front are needed to help envelope you in the surround sound and bookshelf are good for the back.

Initially I went and bought the Klipsch r26f and r25c, after a week with them I returned it when these Hit the shelves at bestbuy, I played both at the demo booth and felt that these sounded much more natural. The Klipsch were just to bright for my ears. Klipsch execution on design is amazing, but you dont buy speakers for looks. These has a retro style look on them, style may not be for everyone but it sounds amazing and a step up from the T series. I ended up buying the entire 5.1 set up and some in ceiling speakers from POLK for a complete atmos setup :)

I purchased this as part of a 5.1 system consisting of the two S55s, two S20s, and one s30 center channel, as well as a 12'' polk sub I already owned. So far they have not disappointed. This configuration is well balanced, with clear voices. I do recommend adding a sub if you buy. The bass is great as is, but the sub rounds out deeper tones and rumbles during action scenes. Music is clear and has that warmness Polk is known for. This is great for a mid level setup that won't break the bank while still holding the standard high for audio quality.

    - I have replaced a pair of Kenwood speakers circa 1998. - The speakers are powered by Sony STR-DH800 receiver. I also have a Sony subwoofer in the system. - The speakers sound very clear. They are much better than my older pair. - However, choosing a right pair of speakers requires lots of research and its actually a factor of taste and budget. I suggest you listen to the speakers in the store (if its possible) before you buy them. - There are better speakers out there but I am happy wits the sound I am getting with these.

These things are off the charts amazing. They have the best clarity I've ever heard from a speaker in this price range and below, and they also do better in the bass dept. than previous Polk speakers. If you're on the edge between the S55's and previous polk line's, go with these! Easily worth the extra $$$. They also do very well with or without a center channel. They make everything sound amazing, and pick up even the smallest of details. Using as 50/50 music movies mix.

These two Polk floor speakers have turned out to be just what I expected and I am mightily pleased. They are located in a large room with not great acoustical qualities but are providing excellent, clear and subtle sound throughout. I am not terribly surprised. While in the Service I purchased a pair of Polk bookcase speakers, which I still have, and they were first-rate. Finally, my new Polk speakers are handsome and add a bit of lustre to the room they are in. I strongly recommend them.

Although I see a lot of people going with soundbars for home theatres, I also like to listen to music and wanted to have an audio system that was on par with my TV. So, added these speakers to the Polk Signature Series center speaker we already had... great improvement of separation (surround) effect even without calibrating my receiver for my room.

These sound very good, I use them with a sub (alone there is not enough bass for my taste) and rears. All together they sound fantastic. Happy with my (price matched, and saved even more) purchase. There are probably better speakers, but I don’t see myself spending a couple thousand for speakers any time soon. These can keep up with the high priced sets just fine.

I'm using these as sides in a 7.1 setup. I would say that this a very easy job for them to handle. They would be better served as fronts in a smaller area setup but I'm using the 55" Sig's for this. The sound is crystal clear on all levels with all kinds of different feed ( Video game, Music, TV, ETC.). They are very attractive and have not one complaint, so far.

would give it 5 stars except one speaker 'buzzes' at times when played loudly. i love the tone of the speakers and when i use my bass boost on my integrated amplifier the bass response is excellent BUT when i play my stereo loudly (peaks @ 200 watts) one speaker buzzes, under lower volume use it sounds stellar.
