Definitely recommended if you’re going to start the charge and put the phone down.

I purchased this to use as a MagSafe charger, as I lost my Apple MagSafe charger on a prior vacation. I should have checked this before going on vacation, and now we are past the return period, but the first time I went to use this I placed it on the back of my MagSafe case, and after 7 minutes or so I got the “Charging on hold, will resume when iPhone returns to a normal temperature” error message. I was sitting in an air conditioned airplane terminal, so it wasn’t like my phone was hot beforehand. After 20 minutes it still wouldn’t charge via MagSafe. You can still charge a phone with a USB-C cable, but that defeats the purpose of even owning this. Lastly, the magnet wasn’t very strong, so even if it would have charged my phone you had to be careful, as your phone is only one light touch from sliding off the charger.
