I stayed away from this movie for a long time and I don't really know why. But I am glad I got around to getting it as it's really fun.

Miyazaki in top form... BUY THIS!

This is Hayao Miyazaki in top form before he became somewhat negative and delivered films some feel were subpar (The Wind Rises) or coming from a negative place at odds with his earlier works (Princess Mononoke).
This film is about a man who turned his back on national politics and his humanity and literally became a pig because he didn't want to be associated with the memories and less-than-honorable actions he did as a man.
It is a tour-de-force of Ghibli animation and touching scenes with a splash of humor, action, and mild romance.
Is it Miyazaki's greatest film? No. Is it a better example of what drew people to Ghibli and to make a regular habit of catching his latest directorial efforts? YES!
It's a definite buy-buy on Blu ray if you're a Ghibli and Miyazaki fan.

A Pig by Any Other Name

The "Crimson Pig" is a film about an extraordinary pig. The story works so well that I forgot about the lead character being a pig. I thought that watching a talking, bounty hunting, flying pig would interfere with my enjoyment of the movie. It did not! The story is uncomplicated with enough sophistication to keep adults entertained. This is an animated film that allows grownups to escape from the harsh realities of life for about an hour an a half into a wonderful imaginary world. After watching "Porco Rosso" I felt relaxed with increased optimism that each one of us can do something, big or small to improve this life for all of us. Once again Studio Ghibli delivers a visually gorgeous animated film with a nice story.

I love this movie. My son turned me on to movies by Hayao Miyasaki. This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I've borrowed it so many times from my son that I felt I should just buy it. Miyasaki is a master story teller and the artwork is so fantastic. I watch his movies just to see the artwork. The colors are so vibrant. This movie deals with a pilot's adventures during WWII. Younger children won't really understand the movie but will still like it anyway because of the funny scenes or just to see a pig fly a plane. I own half of Miyasaki's films and the rest are on my Christmas list. If the synopsis of this film doesn't tickle your fancy, try one of the others. You'll be glad you did.

Favorite Ghibli movie!
More lighthearted than some of the other (more popular) Miyazaki movies, and it is such a fun ride!!
I didn't buy it for the SteelBook, but it does look better in person in comparison to the online picture: it's darker blue, and shiny!
I was afraid the picture quality wouldn't be spectacular considering it is an older movie, but it looked great!
So happy I finally own this on Blu-ray!!

Another masterpiece by Miyazaki. Honestly one of my favorite movies by him which follows a pilot who became a pig after losing his way and slowly finds himself again as the story progresses. This is following the timeline of WWI and Italy with its citizens and soldiers. It really captures the moment and emphasizes it through this movie. A solid movie for everyone out there!

Studio Ghibli has put out some of the greatest animated films of all time. Porco Rosso is my personal favorite. And while I have a boxed set of all the films, I couldn’t resist this series of Steelbooks with their elegant, minimalist design.

Miyazaki's best

Hayao Miyazaki is a god of animation. He has an incredible body of work, and there are certainly many who will disagree, but Porco Rosso is the best of the bunch. There is the lavish backdrop of the Mediterranean, the magical curse that has turned our hero into a pig, and all the laughs and drama of any of Miyazaki's stories. It all comes together beautifully here in a story that adults will appreciate much more than kids. If you haven't seen this yet, do yourself a favor and check it out.

Honestly, as far as Miyaziki goes, this is one of his best. It's up there with My Neighbor Totoro and Princess Mononoke. It easily eclipses Howl's Moving Castle and Ponyo. Many people don't even seem to realize this exists, sadly. It seems as though people are hailing The Wind Rises as his first adult film. That's simply not true. Proco Rosso, with its themes of regret, love, hope, optimism, and even redemption, is really Miyazaki's first adult film. It's fantastic and worth checking out.

A Very Good Miyazaki film...

Porco Rosso (the Crimson Pig) is pretty much an unnoticed Ghibli film. The film deals with a heroic pilot in the 1930s who was cursed and was changed to a human with a pig's head (the reason was never disclosed). It takes place in the Adriatic off Italy where air pirates roam freely. Porco is a mercenary who is challenged to a duel by an American mercenary who is seeking the reputation of shooting down the famous pig.
The animation is atypical of Ghibli's releases during the time period. The flying scenes are quite good and the aircraft used in the film is based on real planes (a Curtis and a Savoia S-21) .The transfer on the Blu-Ray disc is impeccable and is a lot better than the original DVD. The audio is clear, but not much in terms of surround effects.

A Classic Miyazaki Film

This film is one of the more underrated Miyazaki flicks. One would probably think of Spirited Away or My Neighbor Totoro as the premier Miyazaki flicks and they probably are. This film is a Miyazaki masterpiece. A man who lost his humanity learns how to become human again. Not sure if this is suppose to be a film or product review haha. Besides that no issues with the physical disc.
