Where in the world do I begin with this review?! I am beyond pleased with the PowerRay Wizard! Lets start with the packaging and build quality. The entire system comes in a well made rolling suitcase that is lockable. All of the pieces fit nicely into pre-formed spots. Everything fits very snug and you can feel the attention to detail. Everything from the case to the ROV, the controller, to the cable all feel very well made. It is a little on the heavy side (to be expected) but not horribly so. I really like the charging system. One charging block with multiple leads coming out of it so you can charge all the pieces at one time. Smart thinking! Charging from dead will take a few hours. But unlike a flying drone that you will only get about 20 minutes of use out of before the battery dies, you can go for a few hours with the PowerRay. I have to admit, when I first opened it up and saw the various parts and the cables, I thought "am I going to be able to figure thing thing out?". But in reality, it is pretty easy to use. If you have ever used a drone or a really fancy remote control car you will have no issues here. Just follow the instruction book. The instructions are well written and overall pretty simple. It is really just a matter of downloading the app to your phone and making sure the system and the phone are connected by way of wifi. Keep in mind that if you are using the sonar/fish finder, it uses it's own wifi signal. They do stress that you need to keep the cable connecting points dry for obvious reasons. When everything is connected properly, you won't have any issues. But when you bring the ROV out of the water, have a rag or a towel handy and be sure to put the protective cap back on the top of the ROV where the cable attaches. Very important! Now the fun begins! The first few minutes with it you will spend some time getting adjusted to the controls and the app. Shouldn't take you very long. The controller is pretty straight forward. You have the option to bypass the controller and use onscreen controls with your phone. Some may prefer this, but not me. I like the precision feel you get with the actual controller. It is very responsive and it has more power than you might think. I've just used it so far to dive under the ice we have right now on Lake Superior. It feels a little strange to be controlling something you can't see :-) But within minutes you get the feel for it and you just don't want to stop! Do keep this in mind: Where you live matters. I'm in Minnesota. Our slogan is "The Land Of 10,000 Lakes". Needless to say this provides me with endless locations. In particular, I plan to use this along the north shore of Lake Superior where the water is usually very clear and we even have some shipwrecks within the PowerRay's range. But if you live where the water is always silty and not very clear, well, your use might be a bit more limited. The only thing I am not a fan of is the VR goggles. Not that the goggles are bad. But you need a phone that fits into them. I use a Galaxy Note 9 and it sticks out the end of the goggles a bit. I can make it work, but not very well. Still, I can see where I might want to use them on a sunny day if I can't see the phones screen when it is attached to the controller. Overall this is an amazing, well designed ROV. It is very, very well built. As long as you take car of it, it should last for many years. I haven't had it long, but I am chomping at the bit to get back out there with it in the lake! Highly recommended!!

The water is just too dark around this area around Duluth Minnesota it could use some larger lights on it or better lighting. They seem a little costly right now I hope the price comes down on them

I had very high hopes for this underwater drone. It seemed like some of the negative reviews came from a while ago and this drone has shown up on several top 10 lists so I bought it. I took it out to a small lake, got a good handle on how to use it, charged it all back up, took it out again and the motors would not engage. It took days to hear back from support for some troubleshooting ideas. Then when I contacted them that I still could not get the motors to engage, I didn't hear back for another week, then after I did leave an angry voice mail, I received the reply that I needed to send the unit back, but was not given instructions on how to do that. So I contacted them again and finally received instructions. Now they have had the drone for another 9 days, I have left another voicemail message and nothing. Now I really have nothing to show for my money!

    Amazing Underwater Fishing Drone

The PowerRay is something I never truly thought I would need or want, but after having it for the last week or two I have to say it has changed the game for me completely when it comes to fishing! I am an avid fisherman in Florida that loves to offshore fish. This unit goes to about 100 ft deep and the water here only gets about 75ft deep so its perfect to explore all the nearby reefs. I have to say when i opened up the box I was blown away by the quality and thought and care put into this product. The drone itself is a beautiful piece of machinery and is so well thought out. You can really tell that they really took the time and effort to make this a great product. I have many DJI drones that I've paid similar money for and they don't even compare to the quality that Powervision has achieved with the PowerRay. Charging is quick and efficient thanks to a well thought out design that connects all three devices at once. It comes with over 250 ft of tethered cable so you will never lose the drone in the water. An especially cool feature are the VR googles which make it feel like you're scuba diving. The drone itself works similar to a flying drone and was easy to master the depth controls within a few minutes. The ability to take 4k photos and video through the app on your smart phone or tablet is amazing. The battery life on the product is sufficient as well as I never had a fear of running out of battery life when we were out on the water. All in all I can find 0 faults with the product, I'm so impressed! The main draw for me for this product was the ability to scope out fish and see where they're hiding and this does just the trick! It can go all the way down to the bottom of the ocean floor and "scout" for grouper and other fish that live in caves or reefs. The ability to stream to the VR googles or Ipad and see exactly where our lines are casting to is a whole new way to fish! It almost feels like cheating to be honest! It even has the ability to attach your fishing line to the drone right in front of the camera! Clean up and maintenance has been relatively easy so far and it holds up well even with the sea water. I honestly couldn't be happier with this product. I plan on using it for months to map out all the reefs and shipwrecks in the area to find the best fishing. No one else in the area has one so it makes me feel like some kind of fishing wizard, I can't wait to get back on the open water!

Upon receiving this I was surprisingly shocked at the size and high quality of this drone. It's definitely no toy. All of the accessories and case it comes in is mind blowing Honestly reminds me of a miniature size submarine in a James Bond movie. 4K camera, lights sonar fish finder up to 130ft. even tells you the water temperature!. It's waterproof up to 30 meters or about 98 feet If you're wanting to attract fish to add to your recording it has a magnet on the bottom of the drone where you can control and release bait from the controller It's controlled and connected by a 225 foot tether. The way you see and operate it is through the controller is by attaching your smart phone and use the app. It does not have a removable or external memory card to remove. Understandable though because it needs to be extremely water tight at those depths. It has a base station basically connecting like wifi to transfer. Operation time is about 2 hours!! Yes 2 hours. Unheard of if you were operating a flying drone. This is hands down my favorite tech gadget of the year. I myself am in a wheelchair and on oxygen making it impossible to scuba dive and really enjoy the beach or ocean rather, like most but this allowed me to explore and feel as if I were doing just that. It basically gave me "sea legs" I can't say it has any negative marks. The tether is very long to roll up when storing. And the drone doesn't go right or left only front and backwards. Expensive but if you live around or visit the beach or waterways often this would be a must buy

Ohhh so many problems. 1. first time I turned on the motors started spinning ( not supposed to happen out of water) 2. The remote immediately started saying the unit was too deep and to surface (the motors continued to spin faster) 3. The video has a bad warping in the video right in the center of the video 4. the umbilical cord is a massive pain to unscrew from the unit 5. Transfering the video off of the unit through WiFi used two charges, you are only able to transfer one video or photo at a time. 6. It took me 5 attempts to get the unit to connect to even attempt to use the device in the water. 7. The instructions and internet are little to no help in troubleshooting It looks cool though. I am going to attept to return the unit.

First of all all this is not a toy. It is a high quality piece of underwater equipment. Instructions are detailed and easy to understand. You will need a pretty big body of water to get to fully use. The controls take a little getting used to, but work well when you get accustomed to them. The optional VR headset really adds to the experience. I’ve done some basic underwater exploration, but have not used for fishing yet. The underwater sonar will help you keep a watch out for hitting bottom. The lights are bright and help you get good video shoots under various conditions. You will need to be careful with the attached line so it does not get tangled on debris or get in boat rotors. My son looks forward to fishing so we can use the fish finder. It will turn a trip to the lake or ocean into a very entertaining experience for the entire family.

Company is horrible. Never responds. Tried reaching out because the thing that holds the phone screw on the back just snapped after only using it twice. Called and emailed Power Vision multiple times with no response. All we want is a replacement piece. Don’t waste all that money. The product is also very difficult to use even for a very experience drone pilot. Save your cash and wait until DJI makes a better one.

The Power Ray underwater ROV is simply put, awesome! It comes with a very nice case that holds the ROV, remote, WiFi unit, cable, VR goggles, charger, and fish finder very securely. Warning, you really want to read through the quick start guide and instruction manual before taking this out the first time. Inside the documentation is a QR code to download the companion app to your smart phone (iOS or Android). You'll want this app installed as it not only provides real time access to the cameras but allows you to save pictures and video. The camera system is quite good with up to 4k video recording. I've only had two opportunities so far to take it out on the lake due to lots of rainy weather here lately in NC but both times I've been very impressed. This ROV is quite fast when it is submerged! Battery life has averaged just under three hours. If I had to guess I'd bet I'll get better battery life in the warmer months. When paired with a smartphone you'll see depth information on screen and control between dimmer and brighter lights. The "hold depth" feature is cool when you're examining something underwater. My only complaints are control cable management. Some kind of spring loaded rewind feature would be very handy. Also, visually keeping track of the ROV is a minor pain. Over all this is an awesome device to provide a fun day at the lake!

It is as fun as a toy but it’s also a pro equipment! I did not expect it to look this good. Just the case where it is housed and the quality of materials of this equipment is of good quality. Everything is neatly compartmentalized for organized storage. It makes it easy to figure out which item is what for setting things up. However, it takes some playing and tinkering to begin using the Powerray. To be honest, the instructions are not idiot-proof. It explains what is each and how to connect one to another but it does not explain what the function of each is. The guided instructions are not too descriptive either for a non-pro person. I was thinking, I don’t think people without technical acumen will buy an equipment like this anyway. So maybe the instructions itself were just right. You need to look for the Vision + Android app in the google play store. The iOS app can be found using the QR code but not the android app—it brings you to a webpage where you can get a link—the links do not have it for android. Once the app is installed though, it should pretty much be easy from there. Just make sure you connect to the wifi first of the base station and then the app will connect then you can navigate the powerray using the app. It’s fun to use. The Powerray is not light so it helps keep it stable in the water. Although I live by the beach—getting it through the waves takes some skill before going deeper. But once you’re in, it’s a little bit of a breeze. The controls take some getting used to but its not hard. It’s practically forward and back and sideways like a regular RC car then the depth. Once you get the hang of it, which is fairly easy, hovering is pretty good, especially when you’re trying to follow fish. (PS, beach fishes aren’t that big but they are fast!) Although I do some photography, I am not an expert on the colors—I have photoshop to help me with it. My friend mentioned something about warm settings etc. Honestly, the device takes good quality photos. I’m sure I just need to fix them post shoot if I want them to look a certain way. VR goggles add to the fun. I have a pixel 3 and it fits perfectly. I think a 5.5 inch screen phone is perfect for the size. It slips perfectly in the bracket and you get a full picture. Once you put it on, you can really feel like you’re inside the device as it moves underwater. The only downside is you have to be aware of the direction. I couldn’t tell specifically which direction I’m heading. I need the reference of the cable to know if I’m heading farther so I need to look at it from atop the surface . It also has a fishing lure and bait. I’m not a fisher so I didn’t even try that. Maybe when my uncle visits me. For now, it’s a fun device to sight-see underwater and document while you’re at it. It’s definitely a great device to bring on vacations, especially that spring is around the corner!!

Great price it was reduced that week, so I purchased it about a week or so before I was going on vacation with my son! Machine functions well when the software cooperates. Device software is garbage, hasn’t been updated in years. Does not function as advertised by manufacturers. DO. NOT. BUY. Save your money for a better functioning drone. You cannot call their service department correctly. That’s sketchy af to me.

I’ve had a couple of days to use the rover now. My biggest issue has been the weather, all the rain we’ve had, has caused the rivers to swell and the lakes to be fairly murky. But a minor inconvenience only, this has really been a blast. The first thing I did was to download the app and watch the available videos, I’d recommend anyone who gets this rover to do the same. Once I watched all the videos and read through the sparse included documentation I was ready to go. It took a couple of hours to fully charge up, and for me a good 40 minutes to set this up for use. I assume after a few times out this should get easier. One issue I had, and I assume others have the same issue as well. There really needs to be an included way to control the cable connecting to the rover. I’m looking for a way to reel this thing back in once it is gliding through the water. But I’ve seen a few ideas online and will try some out. This really should be one of the included accessories. Having said that, this is a blast to use and I cant take any stars away because of it. Everything else you need and more are included. I tried using my phone and then the included VR headset. I prefer the phone screen, but the VR is very cool, and I think works well. Controlling the rover takes some practice, but after a while it became much easier. It’s kind of like learning to use the controller of a remote controlled car or plane, it just takes some practice. One thing i want to mention, is the fantastic carry case. This case is a quality case and makes transporting the PowerRay a breeze. If you are a photographer or just want to search for what lies below, this rover is the way to go. I plan to take the rover to areas where I know people have lost loads of belongings and search for treasure. I am going to Hawaii, Maui to be exact, in June and will be lugging this along for some incredible South Pacific underwater photo/Videography. I can’t wait for the weather to clear up here at home and the water to become a bit more clear so I can get out and start some exploring! This unit is not cheap, but if it is within your budget, I’d recommend this to anyone and everyone.

    THIS for true underwater exploration

Having an underwater drone can’t be considered as normal or common. Sure, drone ownership has boomed in the last couple of years or so, but underwater exploration is a whole different story. If you live near mid to large size bodies of water, enjoy water activities, or just like to fish, the PowerVision PowerRay could be a novelty to consider, possibly adding to your experience. Of course, the first thing you notice about the PowerRay, as with any other item purchased, is the packaging. I opened the box expecting to find a carefully configured Styrofoam separated assortment of pieces I would have to ultimately put together… Ah, no. There was a fantastic case that resembles one of my best Victorinox travel bags; complete with pull handle and nice, sturdy wheels. The case is worth mentioning – it’s on THAT level. Upon opening, you find the unit and all it’s peripherals neatly tucked in their appropriate places. The cool factor of this awesome drone begins asserting itself before you even lay a hand on it. PowerVision does an excellent job of treating their product like the premium, elite machine it is, and in doing so, the customer is kindly rewarded. While the glamour of the PowerRay immediately catches your attention, the thought of bringing it all together can be a bit overwhelming. Just looking at everything, and wondering how it all fits may make the average user uncomfortable. There’s the drone, the remote, the base, the goggles, the cable, small ball (PowerSeeker), etc., etc… Tech gurus will use standard logic to predetermine the use of everything, but you will find that instructions are your friend. Speaking of instructions, there is a quick start guide to get you up and running quickly. In terms of its effectiveness, I will say so, so. The PowerRay has to maintain a cable connection to it’s transmitter in order to receive commands. This source is actually the base station. The controller and/or your phone connect to the base station. The base station has it’s own WiFi signal allowing device connection. So, just to make sure we are all clear, you need to have the base station powered on, connected to the drone, with your controller/phone powered on and connected to the base station. This is the minimum required to begin using the PowerRay. Also, don’t forget that the base station and drone have separate batteries. You will need to ensure both are charged when using. It’s a lot to take in for the average user. My thoughts are this device is not for the average user. Hey, PowerVision has an 18+ recommended age limit – that should tell you something about not only the safety level, but difficulty/simplicity. Once you get it all together, operation is a bit of a mixed bag. This thing is slick. I haven’t used an underwater drone before this, but I would imagine it doesn’t get any better. A powerful underwater drone with a stellar camera; throw in goggles, some sonar… Impressive! Only thing is, rookies and twitchy users beware. Control is tight and responsive, with little to help the driver. Of course you can set the speed to slow, but it’s still one of those things where beginners need to be cautious. When flying copter drones, there is so much they can do to make flying it easy – install a couple of gyros, throw in some limits and GPS controls, and you can actually struggle to crash it. The water is not so kind, and that serves as the primary difference in driving the PowerRay. In very clear water, it’s much easier to control because of one simple fact: you can visibly see the craft’s physical orientation. When used in a pond, lake, or any water that’s not quite as clear, things get a bit tricky. The goggles are awesome, but getting a true feel for where you actually are in murky or cloudy water can be quite the challenge. I recommend spending quite a bit of time using the PowerRay at the slowest speed. It really takes a bit of time to get comfortable, then decent at controlling the drone in different situations. I have to say using the controller is the way to go. It’s practically video game-like, and offers a much more precise experience than the phone app (Android in my case). The PowerRay has a cable that’s well over 200 feet long, and this thing is pretty sturdy. You can practically drag the drone out of the water by the cable if necessary – it’s actually impressive. That being said, because of the nature of the device (underwater exploration at depths up to 200 feet), there is a bit of concern about the cable disconnecting. The concern is just as an owner of an expensive piece of equipment deeply submerged and held by a single cable (for control and safety)… It just screams, “get a back up line”. Well, should you buy this thing. The short, quick answer is yes, if you live around enough water. If you fish in ponds or lakes, this will help you find those little honey holes where the fish are possibly biting. If you are just looking for a toy, this may be a bit much. It’s a very fun and versatile device, but know that the PowerRay is a very serious piece of equipment.

Send in the Drones! Part 1 of 2

Note: I had to break this review into two parts A decade ago the only time you heard about drones were either when the military was using one to hunt down bad guys, or learning that drone bees don’t have stingers and whose sole purpose is to mate with a queen bee. Not a bad gig in life… But, these days drones are everywhere and have become so commonplace that many people won’t flinch when one buzzes overhead. But PowerVision has upped the ante by creating a new drone that is so different that it’s difficult to explain let alone demonstrate to another person. The PowerRay is a technological marvel, it is a drone that doesn’t fly - it swims! PowerVision conquered the sky with its PowerEgg and PowerEye. And now it turns its sights underwater - literally! It seems appropriate that a device that captures the imagination of those that love going under water comes out during the same time a famous superhero of ocean comes out in the theaters. It’s too bad that didn’t do some sort of cobranding, and movie placement to promote this amazing device. Missed opportunity for PowerVision! PowerRay is an amazing underwater robot drone submersible, that does in the sea what most drones do in the sky. They extend the users reach beyond the physical, through a virtual connection by a vehicle autonomous in that environment. In recent years I’ve become as curious as what’s in the water beneath as in the sky above me. I’m new to diving and I’m taking my time getting use to it. One thing always bothered me about jumping into the ocean - what’s in the water? Depending in the clarity, light levels, reflections, and so on you can only see so much from above the water’s surface. This is where the PowerRay snatched my attention, and made me an owner. I am now able to see what’s beneath me, in the daytime, or at night - before I take a leap (of faith), into the sea. Prior to diving in I can now use the PowerRay to survey the area, and make sure that I’m not going to “need a bigger boat”... It provides me peace of mind that the area is clear of any number of things that could ruin a perfect day. Things that can bite, bump or just get in the way are seen before I ever set flipper into water. For the new diver, that is still getting his sea legs - the service it provides is priceless. It has allowed me to start into this sport much faster than I ever would have without it. Now before I jump-in, the PowerRay goes first! It can dive down nearly 100 feet! It has super bright LEDs up front that illuminate extremely well. I actually wish PowerVision would build into their next version an ultraviolet LED to illuminate and fluoresce the vibrant colors of the reefs and tropical fish. That would make the videos extra cool! I’d love to be able to toggle between the high output LEDs that are on there now to a set of bright “black light” LEDS that make the ocean landscape ignite in color! Any PowerVision engineers reading this? If you are a beginner diver, or an old pro. Or if you are just a little nervous about jumping into the ocean because you’re wondering what’s in there waiting for you - this marvelous invention is a must-have! Don’t hesitate thinking about it, get it - and you will not regret it! It’s really been a game-changer for me to know what I’m diving into beforehand. Brilliant! There are so many other uses for this technology, I bet people have even acknowledge yet. For instance I use to have a swimming pool that every year we’d wonder if the lining was going to have to be replaced. We’d call our pool people, and they’d survey the pool - then give us a verbal report. It would be so much more powerful if they could instead have shown us a video (a live streaming video), of the condition of our pool. Or if you are a boat-owner and you want to inspect the underside of the hull without getting wet. You can do this with this drone! I have been blown away with the quality of the freeze frame photos, and the 4K videos. They are shot through a slightly wide angle lens that doesn’t create noticeable distortion even at the edges. The colors are bold and crisp, and detailed. The entire image is vivid, and the video flow is well stabilized and professional looking. At 25 fps the results are smooth, and enjoyable to watch. There is even a burst mode for taking high res photos! Too bad these weren’t around back when Jacques Cousteau was alive and exploring the seas. He would have love this thing! I’ve recently gotten into Instagram, trying to keep up with the younger generation - and have been using it to share my experiences with my hoppies. Diving being one of them. The PowerRay provides a feature to upload streaming videos to Instagram and Facebook in realtime at 1080P! I didn’t think I could figure out how to make this feature work, but actually it was quite easy with the software they provide. I’ve become a bit of a show-off I think, but hey - I’m an early adopter I’m allowed! I’ve never been much of a fisherman, to be honest. I find the ocean to be beautiful, and fascinating. But fish meat was never a big draw for me to eat. Give me a steak, or a burger and a beer and I’m happy. But, there are loads of fisherman that would LOVE the PowerRay to help them in their sport. The high fidelty camera and sensing system onboard of the PowerRay can be connected to your mobile device and switched to ‘fish finding mode’. They call it ‘power seeker’ mode, and it is designed to help you find schools of fish much like the expensive standalone fishing devices that can cost as much or more than the PowerRay. Making this an absolute bargain for the avid fisherman.
