Splatoon finds some of its success by emulating the structure and rhythm of classic Nintendo franchises like Mario. But it also proves that Nintendo can capably pull off things it’s never really done well before — shooter gameplay, a multiplayer focus, gear and progression and more. Some of my expectations for a shooter were left unfulfilled, but simple, clever game design of the kind that Nintendo has always excelled at elevates Splatoon above its faults. Simplicity isn’t evident from the outset; Splatoon’s premise is bizarre. Players begin by creating a character — another rarity for Nintendo, but one it handles well, with male and female avatars available in a variety of skin tones. After that, the created character is thrown into the strange city of Inkopolis, a world where the human-esque residents can transform into squids and where electricity is provided by creatures known as "zapfish." Before players have a chance to get their bearings, it’s revealed that zapfish are being kidnapped by a mysterious force known as the "Octarians." This sets up a single-player campaign of 20-some standalone levels, each containing a single zapfish to be rescued. Rescuing those zapfish involves mastering Splatoon’s main gameplay hook: shooting inkguns. Every action in the game, from destroying enemies to interacting with pieces of the level, is accomplished by spraying colorful ink everywhere.

For those who are tired of the status quo shooters (whether third person or FPS varieties), Splatoon will be a breath of fresh air--a game where aspects of teamwork merge with a colorful art style to create an engrossing experience. Your characters in this game are squid-like people, and the purpose of the game is to use your ink/paint to color as much of the board as possible before time runs out. Meanwhile, the other team tries to do the same. Battles can be quite frantic, especially as the teams come together, and the maps all have variation and verticality to them that makes for interesting encounters. While the game was initially lacking content at its release, Nintendo has continued to expand the game in the months since (for free, which is incredibly great), and today, it's definitely worth owning if you bit on a Wii U. I highly recommend it, not only for the fun factor, but also to support Nintendo's creativity in taking a genre many feel was/is going stale and doing something truly different.

This game is so unique. You end up going for kills, but you also need to cover the area around you, the most important part. Accessorizing your character and getting new weapons is great. There are so many strategies to learn. The single player is fun too. They continue to update the game frequently, giving you more and more to experience all the time! Probably the best Nintendo game released this year.

If your in the mood for a good shooter and don't need all the violence this is great. The single player was a surprise but I feel they're should be more modes online

The game itself is very fun and adds a more kid friendly concept to a shooter game by using paint instead of bullets. Bad experience with pre-owned games so far from Best Buy. Ordered 3 at one time online, two came without any cover art or booklet (which I really like to have, but may not bother some people) and the one game that did have the proper case could not be read by my Wii U. Just a thought for those looking at pre-owned products!

Splatoon is a rare type of a game for Nintendo, not only is it a new IP but an online multiplayer shooter at that. Despite everything that could go wrong, Nintendo nailed it. The game is insanely fun for any skill level and easy to pick up and play. It has Nintendo color and charm everywhere. Easily one of the Wii U's best.

The whole reason I bought the Wii U was because I wanted to play Mario Kart and it was just as fun as I remembered. However I picked up Splatoon about a week after I got Mario Kart, I picked up Splatoon and haven't played Mario Kart since. It's just a great game all around, so fun and so addictive.

I got into this game late, but the online multiplayer is really fun. Notes for those joining the fest, it may take a little while to get used to it, as many online players are really good. Once you get it, it is so much fun!

This game is crazy fun! Online gameplay is very competitive. It's an original take on FPS games. It's so much fun that hours just fly by... Very addictive.

Overall it's a great and addicting game for both kids and teens. Control takes a while to get used to but it's still extremely fun

By far the best multiplayer game on the Wii U to date. The most recent update has brought a plethora of new items, accessories, and a couple new stages and game modes. This game is probably my favorite game for the Wii U.
