The RØDE - Vlogger Kit USB-C Edition is a nice addition to level up your video taking capabilities whether you are a vlogger or simply one who wants to shoot videos. Of course camera phones nowadays takes good videos but audio is sometimes a hit or miss. With this microphone you can now have directional recording for your audio which provides better audio quality compared to the built-in mic in your phone. Included in the kit si the directional microphone which connects via USB-C (There is a lightning version of this mic too.) A mic clip, a tripod, a light with filters, a deadcat and a charging cable. Usage is pretty much simple, just plug the mic to your phone and you’re good to go. Of course the accessories are there too. Upon testing this mic, it gives more clarity to the sounds in front of the mic and background noise is reduced significantly. Still, unwanted noises can be recorded and that’s where the deadcat (that furry little thing included) comes in. With the deadcat on, unwnanted noises have mostly been cut off. Also, the mic has a 3.5mm jack wherein you can better monitor the sounds you are recording. Though not really necessary, a companion app is recommended to be installed in your phone. This is where you would be able to update the firmware of your phone. One thing to note tough is that this mic does not offer flash recording wherein you can edit audio and video separately and sync them back together. But then again, this is for the casual vlogger. The included light for me is to bright if you are vlogging yourself but sufficient enough if you are using it to video other stuff. There are filters included so the you can have some color depth in your video. I can’t say anymore for this mic save for the fact that it is a nifty addition to your video taking activities.

    A Great Kit for Anyone

This is a hefty vlogger kit. It includes a lot of useful equipment and isn't necessarily just for vlogging either. I plan to use it mostly for content creation. Let me go through each included accessory. I'm ultimately on the fence with the Tripod 2. It's small. The material is great. It's lightweight, and the honeycomb design on the inside of the legs helps—less material means less weight, which is important if you're holding this for relatively long periods of time. It's nice to know this was not an oversight. It has rubber grips on the bottom of each leg for better stabilization, but depending on the surface, if there is too much weight on the tripod, they will slip, and if one goes, they'll all go. This would benefit from more snap positions other than the widest extension snap which is silly. Something worthy of note is that it gets ridiculously low. On a desk less that is just under waist height, I couldn't see my face. You'll need to set it on something else higher than this tripod or in addition to if you want to achieve this. The legs collapse into a solid handle so that you can hold it, and it feels all right in the hand. This is good since I imagine most people will probably be holding this anyway. I managed to hold the tripod for about 10 minutes while recording and hardly felt tired. The SmartGrip makes it easy to put your phone in and adjust. It stays snug against the rubber rests which shouldn't case any cosmetic damage to your phone. When locked properly, my phone doesn't move at all, but make sure buttons aren't in the rests. Please be aware that the back of the box mentions that the mount works for phones between 65-85mm wide, or roughly 2.5-3.3 inches. The MicroLED light is super bright, even on the lowest setting. I wouldn't recommend this for even a slightly dim setting unless you're okay with it being right next to where you'll looking. It will cast a shadow if there is a foreground object, since the LED is small and pinpoint-like. In brighter settings, whether inside or outside, it works great. It gets rid of shadows on the subject to make it much clearer. I haven't messed with the colored filters too much, but they're nice to have. It's not the easiest to adjust because there is a small gap between each locking plate that one keeps the assembly on the grip, and the other positions the light in a certain direction. The small gap makes it hard to tighten. I do feel the top locking plate has no reason to be there; an unmoving LED light would work fine. I like that it's rechargeable. I don't know how long it lasts, but being LED, I'm sure it lasts quite a while. I don't feel it was necessary to include a charging cable for the LED light. If you have a phone with a USB-C port, there's an extremely good chance that you already have a charging cable. The VideoMic Me-C microphone is small and has some weight. It feels like it has quality. You'll of course pick up sound bouncing off of walls if you're inside unless you have material that mitigates this effect. But for a microphone that you can get for a phone, especially a USB-C model, I'm quite pleased. Sound recorded with the microphone sounds clear and clean. You can monitor what's coming through the microphone by using the 3.5 mm headphone jack on the back of the microphone. I plugged in a headset and heard exactly what the microphone was picking up, loud and clear. The included WS9 windshield does a good job after some testing (nothing extensive). It works well and gets the job done. The microphone came with a rubber clip that requires some explanation. If you have a case on your phone, you'll need to take the clip off the microphone. It will not fit. If you don't have a case, you can use the clip to keep the microphone in place. I still don't see it as necessary, as it's already snug. Even with a case, the microphone alone does plug in. It would depend on the case, I'm sure, but my case is somewhat low-profile. You may have to end up taking the case off if you do have one and want to utilize the rubber clip. It's possible I'm missing something with the clip, but I have yet to understand its purpose. Overall, it's a great kit. I don't expect myself to vlog very much, but it'll be nice to have for times that I'm at the beach or in the mountains and want to get a personal or unique video. I like having a better-sounding microphone for my phone in situations that benefit from a directional microphone.

    A few drawbacks

vLogger I'll admit that I'm not a vLogger but I grabbed this unit because I do a lot of colaborative messaging for work. When I travel I don't always have a laptop handy so I thought the Rode vLogger would be an acceptable alternative. I grabbed the Android (or USB-C) version to use with my Samsung Galaxy Note 10. I'm impressed with the quality of all of the components that come with this kit. The plastic tripod/handle has a solid feel to it and the RODE imprinted name on the legs provides a little more grip than smooth plastic. The swivel is easy to adjust and firm once locked in. The phone mount is solid aluminum with indents and rubber pads to firmly hold the phone in place. The range of clamping should be adequate for just about any phone. The Note 10 is pretty large and the clamp had plenty of range to accommodate. I shook the assembly very vigorisly and nothing moved. The phone mount also has a hotshoe slot which holds the LED light. The light is very compact and has 4 different intensity levels not to mention that it also comes with a variety of filters to add hue or soften. The light has a rechargable battery however I haven't had an opportunity to check the battery life. The microphone mounts firmly to the phone using the USB-C connection and there are a few "feet" on the microphone that help stabliize it. My Android phone recognizes the microphone as an input device automatically. Sound quality is improved over input from the phone's built in microphone and the windsock helps reduce wind noise which is huge plus when using outdoors. The RODE Reporter app seems maybe a bit unnecessary as the Android built in apps seem to be adequate. Comments on the Google Play app store are mixed and I haven't spent much time with it. For the purpose I grabbed this unit it seems to work fine. It's a great mobile office addition. Something I can use in an airport during a Teams or Zoom call. But there are a couple of issues that make it not quite perfect. - First, you can't use the microphone with an case that I have. The USB-C jack is not long enough to make a connect. So I constantly find myself pulling the case off and putting it back on when I'm using the vLogger. - Second, make sure your phone is fully charged because you can not charge your phone and use the microphone at the same time. I doubt the mic draws much from the phone battery but if you have a lengthy session then you might be in trouble. I might invest in a USB-C dongle that lets me charge and keep my case on. Maybe the universal kit would have been better for me. - Third, you do not get sound out of the phone with the microphone plugged in. You must use the monitor (aka earphone) jack on the back of the microphone. When doing video chats I don't want to wear headphone or earbuds. I do think that the Bluetooth earbuds will work will the mic is plugged in though. Still, I'd like the option to not have to wear them. I can imagine if I was a vLogger they might not care for this as well. So... in closing. In spite of the drawbacks that I mentioned this unit provides a value alternative to other setups. I'm about to take a vacation and I might even test out the video recording capabilities.

Great little kit that has everything you need at an affordable price. The usb-c mic was the main selling point for me to use on my iPad pro for content creation. Easier to use than others.

This truly is the perfect all in one kit for the vlogger on the go! It's nice and compact and can fit almost anywhere. Comes with literally everything you need to make professional videos. A nice sturdy mini tripod that the legs can fold up and it can be used as a handheld. The tripod attaches to a sturdy clamp that should accommodate most phones and hold them very securely. The included microphone and windscreen is a great upgrade from any phones microphone. It will definitely take your audio recordings to the next level. In my tests outdoors on a slightly windy day the mic with this kid with the windscreen on is a night and day difference from the mic on my Galaxy S20! If you are shooting in low light situations it even includes an awesome very bright rechargeable LED light. Yeah, its not going to turn nighttime into daytime. But it will definitely help your low light videos to make you easily see your subject. It has 3 levels of light to suit your needs. It even included some colored diffuser gels to add a little color to your videos. Another thing is you could use the colored light in the background of your video to spice things up a bit. They even include a short USB-C cable to charge the light! The one small little gripe that I have is that I wish it came with some kind of carrying case to keep it all organized, but other than that, it truly is the perfect vlogging kit. It has definitely elevated my video's, and I know it will yours as well! I could not recommend this kit enough! It's worth every penny and then some!

Great sound but doesn't work with all phones

This microphone has great sound, and the directionality definitely cuts down on background noise. I find that the sound is a bit quieter than the built in mic on my phone, but definitely clearer. A few points to be aware of: 1) The windscreen is definitely required if you are going outside. I went outside on a mildly breezy day and almost all of the audio was wiped out by wind noise. The puff-ball cover completely eliminated this wind noise. 2) You probably have to take your phone out of any case it may be in. Only the most minimal of cases can be used if this min is connected. 3) This does not work with all phones with USB-C ports. I tried it on a OnePlus 6t and it didn't work at all, no matter what settings I tried adjusting. Plugged it in to my Pixel 4a and it was immediately recognized and functional. Here is a video of my experience with it: https://youtu.be/hDaL-s8tbHc

This kit does what it is designed for well. You may have to remove your phone case but the bracket fits snug and the mic snaps directly into the USB-C charge port. The light has to be charged independently and powered on individually. It provides plenty of additional light for close-up shots without being too overbearing. The mic picks up well but looks a little funny sticking out from your phone. The lens filters are nice addition for varies lighting situations. If you are looking to use your cell phone for professional looking videos, this is great to have. If you are a casual pic taker it may be a little too much to have to configure each time you use.

Very solid tripod, perfect size. The light is bright and the colored diffusers really help add some nice ambiance. All pieces are high quality and well built. The mic really makes a difference over the one built in to the phone and the hood kills the wind noise very well. Just starting out with video recording our backyard friends - chipmunks, squirrels and birds. Can’t wait to produce some nice stuff and this really ought to help the whole project I have planned.

Look no further!!! If you are getting into video using your phone; this is the DAY ONE starter kit! ANYONE considering getting into vlogging, home videos, or using their phone as their first camera in content creation, this is for you. All in a single box, you won't find a better solution for audio, lighting, and stabilization to upgrade your stock handheld phone footage. It covers all the bases for increasing your baseline for the quality of your videos. In the box, you get a Rode VideoMic ME, a "dead cat" for outdoor mic work, color correcting gels with an adapter, the phone "cage" or bracket, and a ball head handheld tripod. Your audio will instantly be upgraded on ANY PHONE that has USB-C. The included rechargeable USB-C light is perfect for fixing bad lighting and putting the focus on your face. You can color correct your light with the included filters as well for an added bonus. The handle adds an element of stabilization to your footage which is a plus. The phone bracket is high quality and the perfect "cage" for your phone. Utilizing a screw type of closing mechanism versus the spring found in cheaper phone mounts and built out of solid metal, RODE quality for sure. Simply slide your phone into the cage, plug in your mic, turn on the light, and press record - easy as that. The audio is excellent, and you definitely will hear a more professional sound coming from your footage. The light is impressive with almost a Fresnel lens throw and 3 levels of brightness, and it mounts to any hot shoe. You can gel the light by using the included filters, which is just another professional touch for your footage. In all, you can't go wrong here with this. From the first-time video creator all the way to the seasoned professional who wants a nice portable setup to capture BTS footage and everyone in between. You won't be sorry!
