You literally put in the phone and you are good to go. I used it at a cookie booth for my Girls Scout troop. The entire process (setting up with Square) was so easy. I highly recommend.

It was easy to set up and effortless to use. Just keep in mind if you ever take a video while this thing is plugged into your phone it will create a weird sound.

Previous hardware by the company has not be reliable other than the original Magstripe reader used in headphone jacks. I'm excited to see they have offered a Lightning version rather than using a headphone adapter with the old reader.
