A must have for electric vehicles

When you don't have a charging port installed in your home, you believe you can rely on the charging points out and about in the city. Turns out, that's easier said than done. Also, if you choose to take your vehicle out on a road trip, you're at the wheel of any random charging point you can find. This is actually turning out to be more of a nuisance than I thought. In searching for a solution, I came across this Rexing charging plug. A home station is being installed, but this is actually what I was looking for for the interim and in a bind. I may not be able to find a charging station, but I for sure can find an outlet for the most part. So far, there have been no problems connecting the charger to the car and letting it do what it does. The charging speed is what I expected, and it has a great display for verifying I'm getting the fastest transfer possible. For travel, it's Compact and sturdy. Just like any old extension cord just throw it in the car and I'm good to go. Nothing heavy or bulky to lug around. If you have an electric vehicle or looking to purchase an electric vehicle, this should be in your must-haves. When something goes wrong with your charging station or charging stations out and about and can always find an outlet and keep on the road. That counts for some peace of mind.

This product Fits into any standard three prong plug. I Like how long the cord is. It's thick and durable rated for outside use and can reach my car while it's in the garage. I do not recommend you leaving the charger in the car as it could cause overheating and damage to the unit. It charges just as good as the stations you find to charge. I like the level of convenience and confidence it gives me when I'm driving so I don't have to worry about finding a station while I'm on the road. While some locations claim to accommodate charging for electrical vehicles. They only have an outlet or their charging station is broken or incompatible. Having my own charger is efficient and safe and sanitary. If you are a Tesla owner, this pairs well with the Tesla adapter and does not lose any charge power. I recommend this over the standard plug that comes with the electric vehicle. I would not replace the wall charger or mount charger but definitely will use for traveling purposes for my own peace of mind

This is a nicely made unit. This works great as a replacement charger for the cheaply made included chargers that come with many EV brands. It’s also a good “back up” charger if you have one of the super fancy app driven chargers. Build quality is a lot better than the cable that came with my EV, as well as the discount charger that is a top seller on the internet. The cable that connects the j-socket to the charger feels strong and durable. Doesn’t feel like it will degrade quickly. This charger feels like it will last many years and many charging cycles. The cable that came with my EV started to show wear and tear after a few months, forcing me to look for a quality charger elsewhere. I’ve since had a Level 2 plug installed at my home for dedicated car charging, and keep my Level 1 charger for tapping electricity at work or extended shopping trips. It’s definitely worth having as a charger to keep in the car for moments when you find yourself with access to a nearby wall outlet but not a dedicated EV parking spot. Overall, I highly recommend this Level 1 charger. It works fine for charging your car while you are at work for 8 to 10 hours or overnight.

Rexing - J1772 portable charger - 16A A nicely thought-out Level 1 (16 Amp) portable charger with a J1772 handle and a NEMA 5-15 connector and a 17 foot cord. Instead of just a dumb Level 1 charger it has brick near the 110 V connector that contains the charging mechanism it also includes a display for charging status and an interface that gives a real time update of charging voltage, charging amps, wattage, time, KWh charged, and settings such as Amperage and how long you want the EV to charge. And according to the manufacturer the charger is equipped with overvoltage, overheat and overcurrent protection. It is solidly built and looks to be extremely durable and weather resistant. This is great for when you need to charge your EV and only have a 110 outlet available to use. And it comes in a nice storage bag. I have swapped my Chevy Level 1 charger with this far superior Level 1 charger and with an added extension cable my family is good to go Level 1 charger when there just isn’t a higher level charger available for our use.

This is the Rexing J1772 16A portable EV charger. The J1772 port is the one that's found on a wide variety of of charging stations and is basically designed for use with L1 to L3 charging. The AC adapter end is for typical 110V US outlets. This particular model can supply up to 16A of charging current (at approximately 110V assuming you're plugged directly at a outlet which is itself not too far from the electrical panel supplying it) or 1.76kW. As 16A is effectively the max normal draw on a circuit with a 20A breaker, which is usually the max on household circuits that are not dedicated for a specific purpose, if you want to get the full draw without tripping your breaker, this may need to be the only device on the circuit. That said, if you're just charging one EV, you may not need to run at 16A for your normal charging. I'll explain. If you're just a single EV household and have a vehicle like the Model 3, your daily commute may only compromise about 10-25% of the battery range, so 28-70 miles round trip. That is an amount this charger can replenish in 8-10 hours which is a normal amount of time for overnight charging. If you're on the lower end, you can charge at a lower current which will generally be gentler on your EV's battery and help prolong it's life and range. If you're regularly driving significantly more than that, this may not be as useful - perhaps on trips where you can charge at an Airbnb or some other location when you've arrived at your destination. Using the charger is pretty straight forward. Plug one end into your wall outlet and the other into your vehicle. Depending on the vehicle, you may need an adapter for J1772. This model has a screen, button, and indicator lights. Most of the time, all you really care about are the lights, specifically the color (red, green, or blue or all three). When first plugged in you'll see all three colors as it detects what's going on then flashing green to indicate charging and solid green when done (vehicle stops drawing current). Seeing red by itself is an error indication of some sort which you'll not need to decode any flashing rate, just read the error from the screen. You'll see blue when you use the button to configure things which is pretty much either seeing current or turning on and off ground connection, and saying a charging time. As this is a, relatively speaking, dumb charger, it outputs the same current when charging and is unable to adjust itself to your circuit. So showing the current man's is needed to deal with other loads on the same circuit as your charger, reducing the rate to something that gives you the desired charge after your normal charging window but perhaps at a lower rate for battery longevity, or if you have demand utility billing, helping keep your max power draw below some threshold. To enter the config menu, you press and hold the button for about 3 seconds. Pressing the button once will cycle through the options on the screen. Pressing and holding for 3s makes a selection. Once you've made a selection, that saves the seeing and exits the config menu. So you need to go through the complete process for everything you want to change. The charge time can be useful depending on your vehicle. Some vehicles can't disconnect the charger electronically. So they need to waste the energy once the battery is charged or had reached the desired set SoC (state of charge). So, to reduce waste, you can program the charger to only charge for a set time then turn off ensuring that you limit waste. This can also be useful for managing time of use electricity billing, you can limit the charging time to when rates are low knowing you won't need to keep a close eye on the time or be around to disconnect the charger. At far as using it goes, the charger for what it claimed. It's reported charging current and my car agreed pretty closely. I could reach the 16A max. Being limited to less than 2kW was a bit problematic for me as I have multiple vehicles which for to how they're used, I need to regularly be able to charge about 50% in four hours. It is convenient for trips and for me, allows an option I can take where I'm not as upset if it's forgotten temporarily it even lost versus my stock mobile charger that's 7.6kW capable on a 240V circuit. In short, it's a pretty decent charger, especially if you don't already have a smarter one, don't need L2 at home, or want a travel option that you'd be less worried about getting damaged or lost.

I’ve been in a Ford Mach E and this thing has been a life saver. My dwelling doesn’t have EV charging stations and even if they installed some, it likely wouldn’t be enough to meet the demand being seen on EV purchases. This portable EV charger lets me use a standard outlet to charge my EV and it offers the flexibility of charging from 8A-16A, limited only by your circuit — which may be even a little faster than the stock cable. I appreciate that there are protections built into it to protect the vehicle (overvoltage, overheat, and overcurrent protection) and it’s pretty cool that it has a built-in display to show you charging voltage, charging amps, wattage, time, KWh charged, and settings — all at a quick glance. It comes with a handy storage bag and the build quality is first class. Something else that’s small, but huge - I appreciate that Rexing was conscious of the SIZE of the wall adapter. So many EV charging cables have designs on them where they dominate a power outlet. In settings like mine, where you have more demand for outlets than outlets, often times this means someone charging their vehicle with other branded cables will block BOTH outlets because the heads are oversized or the cabling is designed to run downward which is effectively taking up both slots (this is very common with the Chevy Bolt cables). All in all - great cable and higher/better quality than OEM in most cases.

The Rexing - J1772 portable charger - 16A is a portable, Level 1 charging cable primarily design for PHEV's and other vehicles with smaller batteries that can be charged from a regular 120v household circuit. Because it is charging at 120v (not 240v), charging can take around 10 hours (15 kwhr battery), is generally done overnight, and usually does not need any modifications to your home electrical system as long as a 120v receptacle is available. I have a Toyota Rav4 Prime. The Prime is a PHEV with an approxiately usable 15 kwhr battery. The Rexing - J1772 portable charger - 16A is essentially an upgraded replacement for charging cable that Toyota provides with the Prime. It displays information about current, watts, etc. that the OEM cable does not display. In operation, the Rexing performs identical to the Toyota cable. Charging is completed overnight and, when completed, I have about about 51 miles of electrical range. I highly recommend the Rexing cable if you want to charge your PHEV or other smaller battery vehicle from a regular household 120v circuit.

The Rexing level 1 EV charger is nice, but it takes a long time to charge the car, around 36 hours.

In a pinch, a 16A / 110V charger can give you some extra miles. However, at 1.6Kw per hour, it takes over 24 hours to charge my car. It’s not something I would recommend to anyone for regular use. Rexing’s charger gives a lot of information while it’s working. Several status lights show the state of the outlet, the car, and the charging. It checks to make sure the outlet used for charging is grounded for safety. The output can be set for 10A, 12A, or 16A, depending on your house wiring. While many circuits are 20A, it’s nice to be able to set it lower in cases where the circuit may not support the full speed. The biggest issues are the short cord and heavy converter. The converter box which takes the current from the house and boosts it to 220V is somewhat heavy. It’s The cord to the converter is about 18” long, which is not enough to reach the ground in my garage. This means the heavy converter pulls the plug from the outlet while it’s resting. While there are some outlets which are positioned closer to the ground, there’s no guarantee of what will be found out in the wild. If you’re in need of a portable charger for emergency use, there are better options.
