So another headset in a sea of headsets, what sets the Plantronics RIG 500 PRO HX apart and is it worth? Well, that depends on your perspective or , more appropriately, your expectation. This is not a $200 to $300 gamers headset, this is an $80 headset that has some comparable features to the more expensive elite. Let’s look at the particulars - Construction - Well, it is plastic through out and does reflect the price point. First thing I noticed is one of the ear pieces detached front from the housing. After looking closer, I can see that it was part of the design to adjust the spacing of the ear pieces. You can see that the plastic is not very robust and I would question it’s durability. There is nothing wrong with plastic, it just feels cheap on the Plantronics RIG 500 PRO HX. Fit - The headset is very light weight is is relatively comfortable. The ear cups are noticeably smaller when comparing it to my other top of line headset. They do fit but I could see people with large heads and/ or large ears having an issue. I’m talking to you, circus folk. Sound quality - The sound was better than I expected. Very clear, distinct sounds during game play. The bass was not as strong as the big boys but the sound quality was comparable. The mic was crystal clear and distinct, just be aware that it will pick up you breathing if you have it too close to your mouth. I have owned a lot of Plantronic’s devices, they certainly know what they are doing when it comes to audio. Features - I am not going to go too much into the features, you can see that on BestBuy’s page. There are some things that are nice touches. First, the simple to use volume control is something that I wish was on my expensive headset. Easy to use and smartly placed. The other thing worth mentioning is the “flip up mic to mute function.” Smart idea and a nice touch. Conclusion - The Plantronics RIG 500 PRO HX does what it is supposed to. The audio is good , the features are what you would find on more expensive headsets, it is simple to use and comes in at an attractive price. Is it built as well as the more expensive competition or even Plantronics higher end headsets? No, there are distinct differences why those headsets are more expensive. However, for most people, this headset will give them a lot of bang for the buck. Overall , I recommend it on that alone. On an aside, Plantronics has a lot of RIG headsets. By last count, there are 12 RIG headsets ( Xbox compatible) of which 4 are listed as RIG 500’s. Be careful you are buying the model you intended. If Plantronic’s is reading this, you may want to stream line your offering to be less confusing.

Good gaming or online meeting headphones. Not noise canceling, but blocks most background noises.

This review is specific to the HX version of the Plantronics – RIG 500 PRO Gaming Headset which means it is the headset designed primarily for use with the Xbox One (although it does come with a little rubber adapter that supposedly allows you to use this headset with a PS4 controller). I do not own a PS4 so I cannot verify whether it works with the PS4. I have only used this headset with an Xbox One. The headset comes preinstalled with a little rubber adapter which is supposed to allow you to plug it right in to your Xbox One controller. One thing that isn’t very clear about this headset is that it can only be used right out of the box if you have a controller with the 3.5mm jack built-in. This is very important to note because not all Xbox One controllers have this jack built-in and you should verify the type of controller you have prior to purchasing this headset. I own a couple of the original Xbox One controllers which do not have the 3.5mm jacks built-in as well as one of the newer controllers which does have this jack built-in. As previously noted, if you do not have controllers with the 3.5mm jack built-in, you will not be able to use this headset without an additional adapter which does not come with this headset. Fortunately, I already had one of these adapters leftover from an old TurtleBeach headset. It would have been nice for Plantronics to include such an adapter the same way TurtleBeach did with the old headset I had but I do not know if TurtleBeach even includes these adapters with their current headsets since I obtained my prior TurtleBeach headset years ago back when none of the Xbox One controllers had the 3.5mm jack so I won’t hold it against Plantronics since they are likely assuming most people are using newer controllers at this point and it helps to keep the price down by not including an adapter that not everyone will need. All that aside, when it comes to actually using this headset, at this point I simply can’t game without it. The sound quality is superb and it is the most comfortable headset I have ever worn. The surround sound feeling really comes in handy when listening for footsteps or shots and knowing exactly which direction these sounds are coming from. The headset itself can be easily taken apart and adjusted to just the right fit so it was easy to find a setting that worked perfectly for me. The volume for the headset is controlled by a dial which is located right where the cable plugs in to the controller. This is very handy and makes it easy to adjust the volume as needed. One of the only slight drawbacks I have found is the mute function. Rather than having a button to press in the same area where the volume dial is, in order to mute the microphone, you have to physically rotate the mic itself into an upward position. I like having a mute button easily accessible near the controller itself but this is a minor issue that doesn’t detract from the other great features of this headset. If you have the older controllers which require an adapter to use this headset, the adapter usually has its own volume control and mute function. As a result, I actually prefer using this headset with my older controllers in conjunction with the adapter I already had since I can adjust the ratio of game volume to chat volume and I have a mute function available literally at my fingertips thanks to the adapter. Based on this, if you do not have a controller with a built-in 3.5mm jack, don’t let the adapter issue dissuade you from purchasing this particular headset. Once you have the necessary adapter, it actually makes using this particular headset even better and I highly recommend this product to anyone in search of a high quality gaming headset!
