The RIG - R5 SPEAR PRO HS WIRED HEADSET – Black is a fairly low priced headset that gives a quality of performance higher than most headsets of similar prices. The RIG is a budget friendly headset that is 100% plug and play. With its 3.5mm audio jack, there is no need for a Bluetooth connection, I just needed to plug it in to begin listening to my video games or music. The 40mm grapheme drivers produce that clear crisp sound that gamers prefer. All sounds in my game are picked up, whether soft light sounds or loud explosions. There is no Equalizer or companion software to adjust the sound to my specific desire, but one is not really needed with the pristine audio that remains clear even when turning up the volume. The bass is not that deep, but good enough for me to enjoy my games. The lightweight design and comfortable fitting allows me to sit for hours without taking off the RIG headset. The RIG is made of durable plastic with memory foam padding on both the headband and plush ear cups. The sliding adjustable headband makes it easy to get the headset in a comfortable position. When the cushioning begins to deflate or the fabric tears from extended use, they can be replaced without buying a whole new headset with replaceable Snap+Lock ear cushions. There are magnetic mod plate ear covers that allows me to switch out default RIG-branded ear cups cover designs for PlayStation cover designs. The flip-to-mute microphone attached to the left earcup has broadcast quality, but is not detachable. It has some noise canceling ability, as well. The headset wire controls volume with a slider that feels a bit stiff, making controlling volume through the console the best option. Even though the RIG is made exclusively for PlayStation, it has the ability to work with any platform, device, or controller that has a 3.5mm headphone jack. That means it can be compatible with Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, Switch 2, and a PC. At the low price, the RIG - R5 SPEAR PRO HS WIRED HEADSET – Black is a headset that will not disappoint true gamers.

Honestly, I was surprised how well these worked. Sound was loud. Not quite as crisp of a sound, but this was a lot better than I thought they would be, especially at max loudness. They did start to slightly crackle a little at max level but not all that much. Although these are made for PlayStation, they are a 3.5mm jack so they worked great on my PC, as well as my iPhone with a 3.5mm to a USB-C adaptor. Was told that the mic did not sound that bad. They come with a set of magnetic covers that have the PlayStation logo on them. Or you can run without and have the RIG logo on the sides instead. I like this idea if they move forward to allow custom plates that you can create or buy. I am a huge fan for having the mic to push up to mute and move out of the way. These do that; however, it is a bit stiff, and the mic has to be all the way up to activate the mute. The cord length is decent length. I get these are for plugging into a controller so plenty length for that. I would like it a bit longer for those who may be on PC though. They also have a volume knob on the cord that works. If full volume it will click causing you to have to use a little pressure to get it to move. I only thing is that I prefer wired personally. But if you do not care, and looking for a wired headset, and you are looking at these, you won't be disappointed.

The RIG R5 Spear Pro HS is the first gaming headset I've used from RIG, and the second headset I've received in recent months that is targeted primarily at console gamers. RIG have incorporated a very unique feature with the R5 Spear Pro - "swappable mod plates." In other words, the outer shell of the ear cups are replaceable. While cynically I can look at this as a bit of a cash grab, it's hard to say that is really true when the headset itself is priced so low to start. As a parent, the idea of getting my twin boys each a pair of R5 Spear Pros and then giving them a few different mod plates definitely has some appeal. #Unboxing and first impressions# I really liked the packaging for the R5 Spear Pro. For a budget-priced wired headset, I expected the packaging to be as minimal as a few others I've used in a similar price range. Instead, the headset arrived in a thick walled box with a nice cardboard inner box as well. The memory foam ear pads of the R5 Spear Pro are extremely soft and pliable, and it has a padded headband as well. The cable is short, so this is clearly designed for use with console controllers that have a headphone jack on them. It would be difficult to use this with a PC unless you have a USB headphone amp sitting on your desk. #Using the R5 Spear Pro# The first thing I noticed with the R5 Spear Pro HS is how comfortable the earpads were with my glasses. I've had a few headsets in the past where the cushions were too stiff and caused my glasses to get pushed into my face, or caused rubbing noises through the frames. Not the case here. I also really like the adjustability of both the mic boom and the headset overall. The boom has a solid feel to it, but is adjustable and holds where you bend it, so it is easy to make work for an adult or my kids. Same for the headset - my kids were able to easily adjust to their heads, and it fits me perfectly. The "mod plates" are super easy to attach and detach, reinforcing my initial thought that this would be a great gift for my kids with some additional mod plates to swap to. Sound quality is very good, but not amazing. For games the sound is perfectly fine, but there's a bit of distortion on the lower end when listening to music. This isn't out of the ordinary for inexpensive headsets and it wasn't out of line at all with my expectations. On the positive side, I found the midrange and highs to be very pleasant and well driven by my PS5 controller. The only real negative for the entire product is the volume slider that is on the cable. It's kind of a weird design in that it has a tactile bump near the max volume, so to get to max you kind of "click it" all the way up, but the rest of the way is a low tension slider. I'm not sure what the point of this is supposed to be. If you set your console or laptop volume to a point where the "max" is comfortable, below the bump will be way too quiet. If you set it so the loudest "below the bump" volume is reasonable, it will be painfully loud when clicked all the way up. This isn't enough to knock points off as I'll just continue to use the volume on the console controllers to control it, but it's just kinda weird. #Final thoughts# This headset comes in at about 10 bucks more than the last console-specific wired headset I've reviewed, and it feels like it should be way more than that. The R5 Spear Pro is a really great deal even at full MSRP and I expect it will be a great gift for a kid or teen when bundled with the different mod plates. The sound quality, comfort, and fit and finish are great for the price. This one is easy to recommend, and I might just pick up a second pair for my twins' PS4.

I totally did not see this coming from these headphones. The Rig R5s are great quality wired headphones I would recommend. At first, I was thrown off by its form factor. It has open components that I had to cover with cups that apparently are customizable. The separate items though seem to make these future-proof as I can change parts easily by myself in the future. Although by the looks of the materials used to build these headphones, I will not have to replace them for a while, or ever, because they are seemingly durable. They are pretty light, perhaps because they are wired so there are no batteries in the cans. The cushion is typical—it is decent—neither uncomfy nor too warm to the ears. The band is a little firm but the cushioning is just right that it does not make me want to remove them after 3 hours of play. I don’t really mind the looks as I don’t look at my headphones. What matters here is what I hear. These headphones are so good, I think it’s one of the best surprises for me in 2025. The sound is so crisp and there is so much details in the audio quality. The range is a little more on the mids and highs side, so I can hear clear vocals and defined footsteps. The bass is not exceptional but it works. What I like is how it uses the PS5s spatial sound perfectly. Now I do not know if the spatial sound has anything to do with any faux noise cancellation, because these headphones are pretty good with shutting out external noise, but the wideness of my arena is very well pronounced. I feel like I am in a real sphere and I can pin point where I hear the sound, like what is in my exact 8pm and how far in degrees the grass is rustling. The sound it projects is so clear and precise, and the details are so crisp. Wind direction and paper moving is exceptionally rendered. The flip to mute feature for the mic is quite effective too, though I had one comment that I was coming in too loud, so muting me when I need to—when I feel like I am a little too excited, helps me not get kicked out of the team. These are really good headphones, and pretty good for the price too. Though pricier wireless (dongle) options for my PS5 exist, I don’t think I have tried options that have sound details much better than these RIG wired R5s. I definitely recommend these!

I have been using the Nacon R5 Pro HS for a few days now and it's impossible to find fault. First, I tend to prefer wired headsets with my PS5, as it's one less thing to charge. Unboxing was a bit of a surprise, as there is a box with what RIG calls "Snap Lock Plates". So the black PlayStation outer shell magnetically attaches to the outside of the R5's. These are easy to snap on, when I was checking out why, RIG actually have the 3D Print STL files on their website so you can make custom ones - kinda cool. Also, worth noting, the earcups themselves also can be easily removed and changed, they connect using magnets as well. But what really matters is the comfort and sound. The foam earcups are comfortable with incredibly good sound isolation, but the audio... wow wow wow. Crystal clear audio, warm sounds, and incredible fidelity. I'm hearing background ambient audio in Battlefield I never heard before. This is kind of surreal. In terms of the microphone, I use Discord and the microphone quality seems solid. I'm not a huge multiplayer gamer on the PS5 (prefer my PC for that) but the microphone does flip up to mute. FYI, it's a left hand only microphone. There's also inline volume control on the cable, may seem odd to call out, but it's smooth and firm (not rattly like some cheaper headsets). Overall, the R5 is a great headset and I'm looking forward to a Thanksgiving Weekend of PS5 gaming!

Practical Look at the RIG R5 SPEAR PRO

I have been using RIG R5 SPEAR PRO Gaming Headset for a few weeks now (it replaced a wireless headset I used from another brand) and I must say this headset is worth considering. The good news is this is a budget-friendly wired gaming headset that delivers surprisingly rich audio, comfort, and versatility, especially for PlayStation and PC gamers. At first glance, I thought this would be just a basic headset. When I tried it on, I was surprised by the way it set over my head and how comfortable it felt to wear it during gaming and music listening experience. Plush over the ear cushions are soft and well-padded, and I believe they offer a snug fit without feeling tight in my case (head sizes do vary, so see how it fits for you). After a few hours of game play, I did not feel like "Oh, I gotta get these off!". Rig has used breathable fabric in the ear cups which definitely helps prevent heat buildup. And what is more the ear cups covers can be slightly adjusted to make it feel even more comfortable. Audio quality is also another surprise which I did not expect from this low budget headset. This gaming headset features graphene coated 40mm drivers and after a number of hours in game play, I can tell they deliver crisp highs and deep bass, offering immersive sound for both gaming and media. The use of graphene in these is definitely a huge plus. Some interesting info about it is Graphene is a one atom thick layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice. It is incredibly strong (about 200 times stronger than steel), ultra-lightweight, and highly conductive, therefore making it ideal for audio applications. If you never tried spatial audio features in your PlayStation 5, these are fully compatible with PS5’s spatial audio system. If you are a fan of Call of Duty, you will notice the enhancing directional sound cues and better spatial awareness in 3D audio environments. Flip-to-Mute mic is simple and intuitive and won't disappoint you either when using it Discord for example. Everyone said that it was clear and my voice sounded perfectly fine. I like the wired version of the headsets and do not find it uncomfortable (the dangling cord is never in my way). You always get consistent audio quality, zero latency and no need to worry about your battery dying in the middle of the game play. There is also a 3.5mm jack and it works with almost any device (PCs, consoles, tablets) without needing drivers, dongles or pairing. If you are looking for a budget friendly, wired headset that punches above its weight in sound quality and comfort, the RIG R5 SPEAR PRO is a strong pick.

For today’s headsets, it has gotten to the point that even budget headsets have good sound. The RIG - R5 Spear Pro HS wired headset squarely fits in that category but takes it up a notch in terms sound quality. Let’s take a look at the features and how the pros and cons stack up: Build quality and comfort – This is where you have to set the proper expectations – this is a budget headset. It is all plastic with no structural metal. While the overall feel is solid, I would question the long-term durability. I do not think it would break from normal everyday use, but I could see it not surviving being sit on, over stretched etc. I think maybe that would only be any issue for younger children. The earpieces are on the smaller side but fit my ears fine. The foam on the earpieces I very comfortable and does block out a decent amount of ambient sound. Performance – I was not expecting a lot from the sound but I was wrong. Even without a software driven equalizer or sound mode, I found the sound to be clear and there was no distortion at high levels. Compared to 20 years ago, a headset in the budget category would become terrible at high volumes; definitely not the case here. The R5 is lacking in bass but it is fine for games. It is not designed for dual duty of a music headset and gaming headset. The mic is clear as well and I like the basic design of muting by flipping the mic up. It worked well with no issues. RIG states the mic has noise cancellation but that it was hard for me to test other than the mic was very clear during use. A note on the volume and controller for the level. There are a few reviewers that found the control to be clunky. The control is located on the wire and it is slider that clicks into place at the highest level. Below the top volume, you just slide to the desired level. I found no issue with this at all. Cons – There is not a lot to like at this price point. I could see people with large ears and heads having an issue with comfort. I know that sounds like a joke, but the headset is on the small side. During use, I did get some crackling coming from the 3.5 mm connecting turning but that settled down it I made sure it did not move around a lot. One thing I definitely did not like and felt it was a gimmicky waste was the "swappable mod plates." That enables you to put customizable plates on the earphones. No one is going to do that and certainly not on a budget headset. RIG should put that cost into a removeable 3.5 mm cable (because if the old one gets damaged, you will have to buy a new headset.) In conclusion, the R5 Spear Pro HS a great value headset. It certainly does not compare to the expensive headsets, but it checks off all the boxes for a perfectly good budget headset. It reminds me of the old X-Box One head set but with much better sound. RIG does market it the R5 Spear as Playstation headset. However, the 3.5 mm connections allow it to work with other gaming systems. I tried it, it definitely works. One thing that should not be overlooked is the simplicity. There is something to be said for just plugging in a headset and it works. No set up, no software – just plug and play.

This is a well-built, solid headset. Very comfortable, and incredible high-fidelity sound. The super cushiony memory foam earpads are very comfortable for long gaming sessions or just lounging around watching videos or listening to music. The durable lightweight frame and quality build have a nice solid feel on my head during prolonged usage. Wired design eliminates the need to worry about charging or battery life and allows for a dependable connection without going through a pairing process when I’m ready to rock. This is designed and licensed for PlayStation 5 and 4, but it’s wired and obviously works well with anything that has a headphone jack. Design and Comfort This headset is all black and has a simple, clean, and smooth look. Very comfortable and soft memory foam earpads that keep comfort in mind during long periods of gaming or music throughout the day. The fit conforms to my head and remains secure but comfortable for my entire listening sessions. Durable but light-weight construction is a must for any long use headphones and these deliver at just 0.74 pounds. Sound Quality Excellent sound quality with minimal harmonic distortion thanks to the 40mm graphene drivers. Large drivers equals large bass response which this headset has and I love, all the way down to 20Hz. These large drivers offer extraordinary bass response paired with incredibly crisp and clear highs. They don’t sacrifice the mids and highs. These sound incredible no matter what I’m listening to. They also offer amazing spatial audio surround sound powered by Tempest 3D audio which performs really well for gaming. I love having a great pair of wired sound isolation headphones that I can just crank up the volume on when I feel like drowning out any background noise. The attached flip-to-mute mic is exactly how I like it and ideal for fast-paced gaming when I do, or don’t, want to be heard. It does a great job of recognizing voice and not the other background noise, so only what I say is heard. Value The value is definitely there, especially with this headset being officially licensed for PlayStation consoles. Fantastic sound quality at a reasonable price can’t beat.
