    It has potential

I bought this system to replace a more traditional and outdated system that I've had for about 6 years. This is not a perfect system, but it's a good start and it has a lot of potential. As other reviewers have pointed out, getting started with the setup can take a couple of tries. You have to pair the base station via bluetooth to your phone in order to set up the wifi on it. I was able to pair it twice, but each time once I had to enter my wifi password, it took me back to the screen to pair it. The third time went smoothly. After that, the sensors and keypad were able to pair to the base station without an issue. The motion sensor is great. They can be placed pretty high up the walls, which is good, especially since the competitor suggests theirs be placed 4-5' off the ground. The app allows you to set the sensitivity of the motion detector. You can also set it to chime like a contact sensor normally would, but that seems a bit pointless to me. The contact sensors are huge. Both parts are practically double the size of the ones used by my old security company. Also, the contact sensors only chime when opened, but not again when closed. This would be a nice option to have added in a future update. Regarding the keypad, this is just a personal opinion, but the design of the keypad is atrocious. It's all plastic and it's very reminiscent of a Playskool toy. Going through the options on the app, by removing "Power Save Mode" you can have it so they keys will light it when it senses motion. This would be useful to enter your code at night. Also, it's good that you have the option to keep your keypad always plugged in or simply charge the battery and run it unplugged. Whenever you arm or disarm the alarm, you have to enter your code. It's a bit annoying that you can't just push or hold down the home/away buttons to arm the system. I'd assume this is because in theory they'd like each person who has access to have their own code since you can track who arms or disarms the alarm on the app. The siren on the base station is pretty loud. Unless you have a pretty big house, you probably don't need an additional siren. The base station also announces when the system is armed or disarmed... the keypad does the same; it wouldn't be annoying if they actually made the announcement in sync, but the keypad is always behind a few seconds. This is probably useful if you have an additional keypad in the bedroom or another room. My base station and keypad are in the same room, so it's just a bit annoying. I will most likely disable sound on the keypad. The base station can be mounted on the wall or laid on a table. I have very high ceilings, so I mounted mine about 14 feet up the wall. I also drilled a hole on the wall behind my base station to run the power cord through the attic so I wouldn't have any cables showing. Overall, it's a good system. And you can't beat $10/month or $100/year for monitoring. The competitor (which I use in another home) charges $25/month to be able to use the app. This system has a lot of areas for improvement, some of which can be implemented through updates. No glass break detectors are available, though they've been claiming almost since they released the alarm that they were in the works. Also, it would be nice to have to base station or keypad speak a bit more, like by announcing when a sensor is triggered, "Front door open," for example. Apparently Amazon owns Ring now, so hopefully Alexa integration is coming.

    Reserving my opinion

I bought this system after reviewing all of its competitors and it sounded like a really good system and easy to set up. There are several of the items that are easy to set up. However go slowly when setting them up because sometimes it appears you need to hit "next" to continue, but you may not be quite through with that step. You have one shot at setting this up, you cannot go back. Example: while positioning the motion detector a light will flash when it detects motion. Once setup is completed you cannot go back into setup mode if you want to move it. I guess you could remove the item and start over, not sure. One thing I am definitely not pleased with and they do not tell you this anywhere is the motion detector reset period . BEWARE,,,if you trip the motion detector it has a 3 minute reset period. If you trip it on your way to set your alarm, and set your alarm before the 3 minute reset period, IT WILL AUTOMATICALLY BYPASS THE MOTION DETECTOR with no notification!! If a door or window sensor is open it will prompt you to bypass that item or correct it before arming. Not so with the motion detector. When I was speaking with customer service about this their solution was to arm the system remotely after the reset period. I think this is something that definitely should be improved. I should not have to wait three minutes every time I need to arm the system. One thing that is awesome is their customer support. I spoke with a representative on the phone and also had two chat sessions. ALL answered my questions and were very helpful. Wait time was not too long and they follow up with an email if you need more assistance. I am still learning the system and some are my errors, but I think there is room for improving some of the setup. I will be reserving my judgment after using past the 7 day learning period.

    It's okay

I purchased Best Buy's larger starting kit to replace an ageing older alarm system in my home without wasting too much time on it. Opening the box, all the components look a bit cheap in white plastic with no attempt to make it look and feel a bit better e.g. by using some aluminium, featuring a LED status display, implementing softer key touches on the control pads, ... In no way does it match the quality, look and feel of the Ring Doorbell. As someone with a technical background the system was easy and very quick for me to install, but I did notice in some review videos prior to buying, that folks make mistakes like installing the sensor on the door instead of the magnet. This suggests to me that better instructions might be needed. The system works well though, with so far no false alarms and thank heavens, no real ones either. The App is generally okay but could do much better in terms of providing feedback while testing the motion sensors, in order to find their best placement. The permanent 0$ icon in the corner and nagging ad on the bottom for subscriptions are just annoying, come on Ring... Integration with other products and services could also be much improved. I have an Amazon Cloud Cam as well as an Amazon approved smart lock (for in home deliveries) but Ring, despite being owned by Amazon, won't integrate these as of yet (Jul 2018). I don't like all the App switching. Overall I would recommend the system, as the price is very good for what I get and I fully expect the system to further improve through App, software and firmware updates.

Painful app, painful setup, works once it's setup

I purchased the starter kit and 10 additional sensors. Setting up the components in the starter kit was a breeze. Then came the sensor nightmare. I setup the second sensor just as easily as the startup kit. The next 7 sensors took 30 mins each to get going. The 8th I cannot get installed. I read somewhere that if you're installing multiples to give it time to do so because the system cannot handle the requests by the other sensors. This is very accurate. If you buy a kit and extra sensors I would say to install the base kit then wait 30 mins to an hr to do a sensor. Then after that sensor wait 10 mins. Then what you need to do is pray. Pray the app doesn't act up during the process. Pray pairing works correctly. I've had to hard reset every sensor I purchased thus far and run the "manual" installation. I cant get this 8th sensor to pair at all. This isn't rocket science. My level of expertise is to where I can build one of these myself. I design, build and install large enterprise networks for a living. There is a problem with the app and a problem with the handshake between the devices. The sensors I do have installed thus far and the base unit are working great so I am hopeful I will keep this once the rest are installed. Ring should pay me for the time I've wasted on this. Also I waited an hr on the phone for their support before I hung up the phone.

Here's the scoop Alarm works great, easy to install. But Ring needs to improve software to allow more integration with Z-Wave devices. here are my cons and recommendations to Ring: Ring Alarm does not allow any z wave devices to be triggered when alarm rings. for example, if you wanted to add an external horn siren that is z wave compatible or a outlet plug (to Turn on Lights) and you want it to trigger when alarm rings it is not supported by ring alarm. Sure they say you can add a Dome external siren, but its only 85 decibles and can only be used indoors. Also good luck finding one! A simple fix for Ring is to just update software to allow this, It would be great if the alarm had the capability to turn lights inside the house and sound an external siren if a thief came in, also, they can integrate Ring outdoor security lights to sound and turn on as well. All these things can be done with a Software update. So the BIG DRAWBACK IS THE LACK OF ABILITY TO INTEGRATE. RING IF YOU ARE OUT THERE LISTEN UP!

I enjoy setting up new electronics but have found the alarm system to be a problem. First off the sensors for doors do not allow for a recessed door within a door frame. I have 3 homes of different ages and all three have molding around the doors. Really? Did someone at ring not try this out in a real home before selling. The problem is the magnet does not connect enough with the base to provide a connection so the doors always show as open. Yes I will find a way to fix myself but for this price a small additional base would be so easy to offer. Perhaps Ring will figure this out and improve their system.

It does work but the issue is that we have had to call Ring service many times to get the notifications to work properly. Best Buy and the Geek Squad have been great and we do want the security of having this product. The biggest issue we have is that we have had to call Ring many times (although their customer service people are great) and have had to uninstall and reinstall the Ring app many times. We did this again yesterday and so far, so good. We'll see...

This is a good security system for someone on a budget who does not want to commit to a long term contract. Down sides: lousy customer service from Ring and whatever you do, don't use the tape option: drill holes and use the brackets. The sticky on the tape will never come off the device and it will ruin your walls. Other than that, a very practical security option.

Accidentally set off the alarm in the AM when walking to the kitchen due to no entry delay setting on the motion sensor. The work-around is to remove it from home mode. But isn't great in case burglar was able to bypass contact sensors. Would be more useful if it allowed an entry delay of 15 seconds on the motion sensor in home mode. So one can have a chance to disable alarm when the keypad is in the kitchen.

Still in the test stages but it seems like a strong contender. For me The current short comings are the lack of smart plugs for lights and the fact that the key pads don’t have the doorbell function. Meanwhile, the customer service seems to be very good. Have not had any issues or delays with contacting them.

It’s good for a wireless system, my complaint is that you will continue to have to purchase batteries for all the sensors. And the second thing is that that the range of the motion sensors is ten feet at best , I feel that is way to low for this system.

It was set up by Geek Squad and works ok. I don’t see the need for this since the Ring app controls everything. Hence, I don’t even use it to control the Ring device system.
