Purchased for my daughter's apartment. Works as described and will ensure she knows who is at the door before answering it. Wish I would have waited to purchase as it is on sale and $40 cheaper right now.

    Just What We Needed

After a recent burglary we needed some way to monitor who was getting into our supposedly secure apartment building. Since the door to our apartment already had a peep hole installed, The Ring - Peephole Cam Video Doorbell was the perfect solution. It is battery operated and comes with everything needed to quickly install it on a door with an existing peephole viewer. The instructions also go over installation on a door without an existing peephole. Instructions and the tool needed to tighten it down on the door are included. Just remove the original peephole viewer and carefully install this one in its place according to the instructions. A word of caution during the installation. The device has a very delicate flat ribbon wire that must be threaded through the existing hole in the door. The instructions describe how to install it and care must be taken not to damage the ribbon during the installation since it is the connection to the camera on the outside of the door. You will need WiFi in the house and the Ring app on your smartphone to get started and to set it up with your preferred settings. It was easy to initially get it working. However, getting all of the specific settings such as motion zones, recording length, motion sensing frequency, etc. the way we wanted them took a little more time and some trial and error. Once it is working, you will get an alert on your phone when there is motion or a knock at the door. If you open the alert, you will have a live feed and will be able to see, hear and talk to anyone at the door. If you do not respond to the alert, the video will run for an allotted amount of time and then be saved for later viewing. Recorded videos are automatically saved to the Ring site. There is an initial free trial period of 30 days. After that, there is a yearly paid plan available for $30 (one device) that allows storage for up to 60 days. The videos can also be downloaded to your phone or to a desktop PC running the Ring app and saved for future reference. Because the Peephole Cam Video Doorbell is physically mounted on the outside of the door and uses a rechargeable lithium battery, it needs no external power source. We keep a charged spare on hand so that downtime is minimized when the battery gets low. Battery life will depend on your settings and the amount of activity that occurs. Ours is lasting close to 60 days. One issue I've noticed is that app updates do not alert the user to what the latest changes are until you actually install the app and start to use it. Due to new features that were installed, I have had to readjust several of the settings after installing the latest update. It does a great job of alerting you to motion and activity at your door. And can give you immediate access to see and hear what is happening at your door whether you are there or not. It's just what we needed.

    Room for improvement

I currently rent preventing me to drill into my unit, with that this fulfilled my only option for exterior security versus anything else that requires drilling or attaching to a fixed location. As many reviews have mentioned - camera view could be wider so that it includes image of my door directly beneath the peephole, app and features could be richer, and response time could be quicker. Due to the lack of camera angle being wider, you're not able to see directly under your door or even in front of it. So if you do get a package delivered you may not see it near your door. App is lacking and could use additional options such as specifically drawing out zones and such for motions sensing. Alerts work almost instantaneous, however being able to view the feed or answer a door can take a handful of seconds which is a big con in certain situations. Overall I am satisfied, its better than nothing given my situation with renting. Thus far I've been able to deter people from my door, instantly know when my packages arrive, have caught porch pirate in action, and also caught random critters such as trash pandas lurking around. I picked this over the competitor due to the integration with my amazon devices and also the easy installation + setup. I would recommend only if this is your only option for a non permanent solution for security, otherwise it needs improvement and could be at a cheaper price point. Pros +Good for those whom rent +Easy setup +Works well with Amazon/Alexa devices +Great neighborhood app/community Cons -Battery life (get the extra battery) -Camera wide angle of view lacking -Pricey -Delay in connection and also two way communications

Comes with everything you need to install. You don't need any other tools. No modifications, no drilling, no wiring, etc.. I wanted something that was as easy as possible to install and this is perfect for that. Setup for the ring device was also easy. Uses wifi and has battery which last couple of months for me. Swapping battery is easy. I would recommend getting a spare battery as it takes a long time to charge. My only minor gripe is that the camera won't show the floor right in from of the door where packages are normally left. Usually not a problem as I'll see the delivery person carrying the package. Also, my door faces the path in so no one can come from the side. Everything works great.

I'm starting to like this concept, coming from an Amazon Blink XT2 setup. I live in an apartment complex so I called my facility to make sure drilling was acceptable and they said as long as it wasn't into the door. So I stumbled upon this Ring Peephole and installed it easily in 10 minutes with the easy app setup (while the battery charged for 5 hours) and alas, no picture. The flex cable was already damaged so I had to use the secondary flex cable and that fixed my picture problems! Very interesting concept. It detects motion very easily and pretty accurately thus far. I haven't had anyone knock to trigger that alert but I'm sure motion will alert me way before anyone knocks on the door. Maybe not worth $150 due to predicted delays, but it's not too bad.

Got my Ring peephole installed in about 10 minutes. It’s been going strong for over a month and just notified me to charge the battery a couple of days ago. Easy to operate and monitor via my phone. Very happy with everything.

We rent, and were looking for a way to integrate a doorbell cam into our smart home, we obviously can't permanently mount a device, or alter the existing doorbell, and this doorbell/camera solves ALL of those issues! It takes the place of your "peephole" viewer in the door, so there is no "hard mounting" (You can still use it as a regular peephole too). It's battery powered (rechargeable, and lasts 20-40 days per charge). It's Wifi, so ZERO wires. And it connects flawlessly with our Alexa. Setup is super easy, and the video/audio quality is great, plus it's got infrared, so if you've got a dark doorway, this solves that perfectly. There are many ways to customize the notifications (door knock sensor, doorbell & motion detection). The Ring app is easy to use, and allows you to get & view notifications where ever you are (get a motion detection notification at work? load up the app and see who's outside the door). I only have one complaint, Ring says the battery charge time is 5-10 hours, my initial charge took about 8 hours, i haven't had to charge it since, so I don't know how long the recharge will take...

No drilling or compromising the structure. Easy installation. Great view of the area surrounding your home's exterior. Compared to other Ring designs this one also safeguards the technology because the unit is split between the interior of your home with the exterior box that merely contains the case for the peakhole so the technology is not vulnerable to weather and vandalism. Was also able to add insurance of product through Best Buy plan.

The camera has a great quality. You are required to charge the battery before use. I might buy an extra battery to easily change it once the other one needs to be charged. Super easy to install, the app will guide you how.

Living in an apartment, I wanted a way to monitor the front door while not home. This has FAR exceeded my expectations. I have had for a month and her to change battery and it’s at 82%. Can not recommend enough, and installing it takes roughly 10 minutes, and the instructions are super simple. A+, Ring, nice work.

This was so easy to install and I don’t have to worry about anyone trying to take it off my door unlike the regular Ring doorbell. The battery power lasts a long time. I get an alert once there is motion at my door and then another notification if someone rings the bell. This is one of my favorite purchases this year so far.
