I gave it 5 stars because it is a solid game and someone will LOVE this. I am vested and pushing to finish it however, if you are looking for another Ghost of Tsusima, wait for the sequel. This has some open world elements, some Assassin's Creed elements, the landscape and visuals are great however there is just a little spark that is missing, i can't put a finger on it but it is still fun if you like the games mentioned above

Ronin is an amazing open-world samurai / ninja simulator. It gives me very good nostalgic vibes of Tenchu, Ninja Gaiden (by the same creators..), Bushido Blade, etc. Also very interesting to compare Japanese-made Ronin to the (also VERY GOOD) Western-made Ghost of Tsushima.. both excellent open-world samurai titles. Ronin has a touch more anime-esque stylised flare where as Ghost is a bit more samurai film (Kirasawa etc.) I do wish Team Ninja made actual Very Easy difficulty options (I play for fun / escapism / exploring worlds / art / story / characters / music & so on, not challenge or bragging rights. I do find Ronin to be a bit more palatable toughness-wise than Ninja Gaiden or Nioh. Overall worth the purchase for an open-world medieval Japan alone .. Team Ninja’s magnum opus

In all honesty it’s really hard to love and appreciate an open world sandbox type samurai game after playing Ghost of Tsushima, I don’t mean to be critical towards Rise of the Ronin but Ghosts has 4-5 years on ROTR and does just about everything better. ROTR has a pretty cool concept with a nice story but if you are looking for a groundbreaking experience you won’t find it with this game it’s just a simple as that. It excels in what it’s good at but there is no reason why we should be getting exclusives like this in 2024

Playability over Graphics

TLDR: If you look past the graphics of this game and give it a go for a few hours, you'll be in for a fun experience with lots of replability.
If you want to play a game solely for the graphics, then look elsewhere. The graphics aren't as horrible as other reviews say but this game compensates for that with a fluid and highly versatile combat system with lots of different weapon types and styles to fit the needs of every player. It'll be easy to pick up but difficult to master especially if you wanna get all fancy mixing up your playstyle. The game may not seem like much at the start but the more you play, the more the game offers. This definitely isn’t the first samurai style open world game but it for sure is pretty engaging with lots of random occurrences and side content to distract yourself with when you want a break from the main story. This game also has great boss replayability as you can either visit the dojo or use "Testament of the Soul" that unlocks later on in the game to go back to certain story bosses you've already fought against and fight them again as many times as you want along with any other missions throughout the game you may have taken a liking to.

I’m a fan of difficult games so I decided to play on Twilight difficult. Having a great time so far. The combat takes the parry system of wo long and adds in the stance and combat system of the Nioh games, along with a hint of Ninja Gaiden. Like most Team Ninja games, armor designs look great. Character customization is extensive and supports the use of character creation codes if you’re bad at making your own. I also like that you can switch between the protagonist and whatever ally is on hand, and co-op with friends is a good time. The graphics, while not cutting edge, look completely fine, not sure what all the fuss was about online. So far the games seems to run at a steady 60fps in performance mode and seems to even hit it on graphics mode uncapped. Overall, the game is a great action RPG with lots to explore.

I recently picked up Rise of the Ronin for PS5 from Best Buy, drawn by its promise of an open-world samurai experience. The game delivers a rich narrative set in 19th-century Japan, allowing me to navigate political upheavals and form bonds that influence the story's direction. Combat is a standout feature—engaging and rewarding, especially when mastering the timing of attacks and counters . However, I noticed some performance issues, with frame rate drops in certain modes . Additionally, while the world is expansive, some side quests felt repetitive, and the graphics didn't consistently meet the high standards set by other PS5 titles

Very fun & engaging combat, the game is challenging but not absurdly difficult & I personally loved the time period it was set in. The setting is full of Japanese & western European Architecture & theres this blending of the 2 cultures, I enjoyed the game.

I almost gave up trying to get thru the tutorial with a boss fight requiring working familiarity with the control combos ,stances ,weapon usage and allay deployment. Once i got used to the play style ,similar to Ghost of Tushima , I got hooked. I did set the playstyle to the easiest (Dawn) along with a few other settings.

If you like samurai games, this one is really cool. I have yet to beat it as I tend to attempt to 100% a good game the first play through, I will say that it is really neat that they included real historical elements into the storyline, in addition to real characters from that era. It is certainly worth playing. I will say that I enjoyed the ghost fighting mechanics a bit better, but it doesn’t detract from the game all that much.
