Must adjust Camera Settings to Avoid Hissing Sound

I bought this microphone for my Canon EOS M50, but I didn't realize that there was a hissing sound while in use. I did some research and found out that to avoid the hissing sound, I had to change my camera sound settings to MANUAL, and then lower the dB levels inside my camera. I believe the hissing sound appears to only happen in quieter environments because the microphone is trying to pick up sound. To prevent that, lowering the dB levels within the camera will prevent any hissing sounds. I adjusted my dB levels a little less than the 25% mark, and so far it has been working. Some YouTubers actually lower the dB levels all the way down to 0. Having your camera's Wi-Fi on also affects the microphone; I suggest you have that OFF while using the microphone. Having this priced at $100 is not worth it, unless you can price match it to a lower price in which I was able to do. I recommend to save and get the VideoMic Pro instead - many YouTubers use that and I have heard better reviews than this one.

Avoid at all costs -- massive interference

Microphone has no shielding and picks up wifi and bluetooth interference from nearby devices -- so unless you're going to the jungles, miles away from anything electrical, your audio will sound terrible. Rode has known about this problem for years yet continues to sell this mic without offering a fix....and it can be mostly fixed. You only need to tape aluminum foil to the back of the mic to shield it. Why would you pay this much for a mic and then have to wrap it in foil to get it to work? Rode, this is bad.... Why do you keep selling this mic for years despite knowing this limitation?

Overall we have had great experience and great sound quality from this Rode VideoMic Go. We have a total 3 of these units and all have lasted well over a year. The addition of the Shock mount is a great plus. I hate to say this but we do a lot of mishandling (dropped cameras, etc) and a Rode has never stopped working (fingers crossed). As many great items there is a few negatives. if you have camera controls (buttons) next to the accessory shoe on your camera, be aware that it may block access to them. The Wind Shield that is included blocks light wind. We bought a third party Deadcat Fur Wind Shield ($5-$10). Not a big deal, but for the price of this Rode Mic, couldn't they included a deadcat Wind Shield? There are many Shotgun Mics out in the market. Rode is a very popular brand. This is a great Mic for YouTubers (lightweight). Great microphone to get off your builtin Mic from your camera, without breaking the bank.

I recently purchased audio equipment to increase the production value of my videos. I bought this shotgun microphone after reading reviews on it and liking what I read! One thing I love is that this mic doesn't need batteries, it takes its power from whatever it is plugged into, saving me money and time in the long run. The audio quality it dishes out is great and the shock mount keeps it from picking up any vibrations. If you are shooting in a windy location, you might want to look into picking up a windscreen such as the "Deadcat GO" because they really help! The mic is also very easy to set up and use, making it perfect for the run-and-gun filmmaking that I do! I recommend this product to any videographer looking to increase their production value.

Sound is smooth as butter in a well insulated perfect condition room, it can get a bit tinny for my taste so it needs editing and the wire seems to have an issue staying snug in my sony a6300 any slight jostling or move and the wire has to be pressed back in to avoid a horrible feedback. I'm not a mic guy this is my first mic. Recording in a small office room with hard wood the echo was awful after setting up a blanket attached to the wall and a area rug the echo disapeared, then in editing I reduced treble as it sll hit the ear a little tinny.

This mic is certainly an improvement over the internal mic and for the price is definitely worth it. It's mount makes it unobtrusive so you get improved sound with no downside. The only thing to be aware of is that if you're shooting in manual modes the mic is sensitive enough to pic up the sound of camera operations like spinning the selection wheel on a canon (you'll catch the clicking noise). So that isn't at all a criticism of the mic, but just an fyi for you as a user to either shoot in auto or not adjust things other than focus if sound capture is essential.

No complaints, rode mics are known worldwide as some of the best and most popular professional mics. Records clean audio but I still recommend additional lav mics for interviews/subjects or if in a studio just use a professional cardioid hanging mic with a pop filter. Dynamic mics are great as well. These other options work better than the shotgun mic when used properly in close proximity to subjects vocal projection and then edited into the video during post.

So I went with this model because of its cost... man I guess the saying is true... “you get what you pay for” and that is exactly the quality we got. Mic didn’t work. I’m pretty sure it shouldn’t be too complicated to figure out but no one could get it to work.... not even the employees. So of course I had to return it and purchase the higher model. I tested it before we left and it worked... should have payed more in the first place. I would have saved time having to drive all the way back to the store and then waiting to return the product. What a waste...

Don't have a cell phone anywhere near you when you're trying to use this mic. It is not shielded and you'll have an enormous amount of interference which will obviously ruin the audio of all of your footage. I even turned my cell phone off...but it's no match for the wifi and electronic noise of Times Square. Also...the signal to noise ratio is insanely horrible. There is no silence with this mic. Good luck getting this to sound good without processing it with a noise gate in post. Best Buy was cool enough to accept it back with an upgrade to the Pro which I haven't had the chance to review yet.

Thought this would be a good inexpensive Rode mic from the reviews that I had saw. Guess again! This thing picks up so much electrical feedback from WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC whatever you may be around. I used it at Disneyland one day and it ruined some footage. Within 75ft of the entrance on either side, it picked up so much interference! Did the same on rides and even in the treehouse. So buyer beware. I went with the more pricier Videomic Pro +.

Picks up sound good. If you can adjust you volume on your camera do so. Inside in a small room a person talking normally is really loud on playback. Also if you are videoing someone it does sometimes pick up the sound of you breathing. wind is very pronounced also so maybe one of the wind furs would be a great addition if you video outside a lot. But way better the. The one thing that worries me is the mount seems like something I could easily break. Which I seem to be good at. Other the. That I like it and use it all the time. Really like the fact it does not need batteries.

This mic is great as long as your camera does not need a powered microphone. Some DSLR cameras or other recording devices need the mic to be powered. In that case you would want to get the $150 version of this which requires a battery. For me the biggest convenience of this camera is the fact that it doesn't need a battery and that's one less battery I have to worry about with my gear. I'm already constantly charging and buying disposable batteries and the fact that this simply is plug & play is great!

I just go this to add sound to a few videos for work. I'm new to this so its possible that I missed a setting somewhere in setup. The interference with this is intense. Again I have to point out that I'm a novice so there could be something I missed in setup. I'm doing this review to inform other consumers of my experience and (hopefully) get a response that has a resolution. Thank you for your time.

Good value shotgun mic but poor build

The quality of the sound is decent for a Rode product, but I feel like the build quality is lacking in many respects. It feels like a home made science project rather than a well manufactured product. Even the VideoMic Go is built of solid aluminum and has decent sound quality. This looked more like an advertisement for Rode given the huge lettering on the wind cover, so I ended up returning it. But if you just want a relatively inexpensive shotgun mic for your dslr-style camera, you won't really go wrong here.

I purchased this microphone to upgrade the sound quality from my DSLR footage without having to sync audio in post production for faster video creating. It works for that purpose wonderfully! If you're using it to film outdoors, INVEST IN A DEAD CAT or similar wind buffering cover. The bulk of the microphone causes a lot of unwanted wind noise.

I honestly heard no difference between this mic and the rode mic go. Yes, it had great sound quality and voices are clear, but there is that annoying hissing sound in the background. The camera I used was a canon t5i and I know it's the camera's fault. In order to completely rid of that sound is to get the rode mic PRO which I highly recommend way more than this. I just think it's dumb to spend almost an extra $100 to get rid of the hissing noise..

After using this several time seems to work well. Inside it picks up sound a little to well. If you can adjust the volume in with your camera you can fix that. Outside it does pick up a lot of wind noise. So maybe a wind protector would benefit those who video a lot outdoors. Other than those issue not much to complain about. Nice not having to remember batteries out realizing you left your mic on and your battery is dead when you need it. So that is a plus.

This light weight boom microphone is awesome. It is simple to install - no software, batteries, just plug into your camera mic slot and go. This thing performed so well, I felt like a professional. The volume and clarity of my HD video's via my Cannon camera, took my video to the next level of quality. Great return on my investment. Used it to record an impromptu graduation party and it made a significant difference.

This rode mic is an awesome add on for my cannon 70D! It is a hyper directional mic that focuses on sound directly infront of the microphone's orientation, and tunes out sound coming from all other directions very effectively. It is not the best mic on the market, but one feature I love about this mic is that it does not require any batteries...simply plug in to your camera and you're good to go!

This product is great for people who don't like DSLR camera inbuilt audio which in my opinion sucks. This mic gives you way better audio quality. Best thing is that it doesn't need batteries and there is no on and off switch which helps in case you record and forgot to turn the button on. The built is nice way better that VIDEOMIC PRO, and the quality is good for the price tag. Go get one. ...
