I got non extreme version and am very happy with this device. I also have a Steamdeck for comparison. Controls feel way more comfortable and ergonomic to me than the SD. I'm not sure about performance though. It runs all my games great. It does have some quircks (mostly with Windows), but nothing that deter any PC gamer. Maxed out, battery is terrible on this guy. TBH its not that great on the SD either. You have to trade performance for battery if that is what want. I prefer this as a portable device. So kick down some settings, and the battery life gets MUCH better. I did the same with SD. Look online for what settings to change. Fantastic that runs everything I throw at it. And unlike SteamOS, you can run anti-cheat on this (which of means you can run games like Fortnite).

The ASUS ROG Ally 7" 120Hz FHD 1080p Gaming Handheld - AMD Ryzen Z1 Processor - 512GB - White, is very well put together. It uses top notch components, and exudes high quality. It comes loaded with Windows 11, Asus Armory Crate software, and 1 preloaded game. It's nice to see prebuilt PC's that aren't stuffed to the gills with bloatware. The Ally is a good size, and the controls are perfectly laid out for my hands. The screen is nice and vibrant, and the sound is nice and clear, although the speakers don't play much louder than my smart phone does so I would recommend headphones. Overall the design, software, overall fit, feel, and finish is great. The downfall of this particular version it it's under powered. It barely plays some older games at just over 30 frames a second, with some scenes dipping below the 20's. It also stalled out several times when downloading my games from the Steam Library. A quick power cycle is usually all it took to get my downloads back on track, but it was annoying to set it to download, then come back and find out nothing happened. Game play was enjoyable, but navigating the various screens was difficult sometimes. With Steam open, and Armory crate, it was hard to navigate to the desk top, or close a game when I wanted to. Sometimes the game would load and play underneath the top screens, and I would hear the game start up but not see it. Then I would have to navigate around to find out where the game opened. The sound quality is good, but the volume level is low, it would be nice if these played a bit louder. If there is a lot of background noise it is hard to hear these.

Solid Foray Into Handheld Gaming PC

I recently purchased the ROG Ally RC71L, and I must say that I'm pretty impressed with this handheld gaming device. There are several aspects that really stand out to me. First and foremost, the build quality of the ROG Ally RC71L is truly impressive. It feels solid and well-constructed, which gives me confidence that it will last for a long time. The attention to detail in the design is evident, and it exudes a premium feel. The screen is another highlight of this device. It's bright and crisp, which enhances the gaming experience. The visuals are stunning, and I found myself getting lost in the games I was playing, thanks to the fantastic display. Comfort is a crucial factor for long gaming sessions, and I found the form factor of the ROG Ally RC71L to be quite comfortable. Despite the size it was remarkably light. I could play for hours without feeling any discomfort, which is a big plus for me. Now, let's talk about some of my concerns. While the lights in the Armory Crate are fun and add to the overall gaming aesthetics, they're not a critical factor for me when purchasing a gaming device. I'm more focused on performance and functionality. As a gamer, I had mixed feelings about the joysticks on this device. They stick out and are not replaceable, which makes me a bit nervous about their long-term durability. What if one of them gets sticky or starts drifting after a year of use? That's a legitimate concern, considering the investment in this device. On the other hand, the option to upgrade to the Z1 Extreme processor is tempting. If you're already spending this much on a gaming device, it makes sense to go for the best processor available. I did experience some hangups and freezes while installing and launching games, which makes me wonder if the more powerful chip could have provided a smoother experience. Overall, I'd give the ROG Ally RC71L 4.5 stars. It's an excellent gaming device with impressive build quality, a fantastic screen, comfortable form factor, and immersive sound. However, the concerns about the joysticks and the occasional performance hiccups prevent me from giving it a perfect score. I'm looking forward to taking my gaming experience to the next level on my next plane ride with this device!

Okay, this thing is a beast! I bought it after returning my G-Cliud which was pretty awesome as well but it was tethered to its one operating system. I’m not able to play Modernware 3 or any of the Call of Duty games. After extensive research, the Steam was my next option but again, it has its own operating system which it could not play the games I wanted either. In comes the Windows 10/11 ASUS Rig Ally. Now I can play all of the cal of duty’s as well as use any software that has want, including Avid protocols! I can arrange and I’d down my music in bed, lol. I made a good decision with the handheld because it does way more than I expected. Also, with the low price $40 dock, I can run my mouse, keyboard or anything I can plug into USB A & C as well as HDMI to play full screen on my 144 Hertz monitor, which the device supports fully in more than 4K. In my opinion, it’s the best one out. P.S., I upgrade my internal 512 GB sad to a 2 terabyte SSD and a 512 GB SD card and it’s so super awesome!

The ROG Ally has completely surpassed my expectations and fills are huge void I had when gaming on the go. The device itself has a 7-inch IPS display which provides excellent visuals for all the games I have played so far. It does offer 120hz with Variable Refresh Rate (VRR). Since this is an asus gaming device, armory crate comes installed and works flawlessly and adds dang near any customization you can want for a device like this. The speakers themselves sound great and do get loud, if you choose. As far as thermals go, I did not notice anything out of the ordinary and it being a handheld device, I had no issues with my hands getting hot during long gaming sessions. The AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor (Zen4 architecture for those that want to know) provides excellent performance. It comes with 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and a 512GB NVMe M.2 SSD. It also has a slot for a microSD card if you feel the need, which is a nice touch. While playing Tiny Tinas Wonderland, I was about to hover between 70-90 FPS, which is more than enough for me. Diablo 4 I was also able to stay above 60 FPS. Overall, I cannot express enough how amazing this device is. As a gaming enthusiast for decades, the ability the Ally offers for me to play on the go really makes the device a must have for those that travel and want to be able to game without lugging around their heavy hardware.

I was initially disappointed to find out how lacking the Z1 chip was compared to the Z1 extreme and steam deck. But, if you understand and accept it's graphical shortcomings everything else is amazing. The console is aesthetically pleasing, the display is top notch, buttons and controls all feel good, and having windows included is a huge plus. The Z1 is able to run emulators up to the Nintendo Switch perfectly, so I am finding myself mostly using it for that and less demanding PC titles. For the low price of $400 you are getting A LOT in the Ally. If you can afford to get the Z1 extreme chip, I would say go for it as the difference in power is large and then throw a 2tb SSD in it, although at that price point you might want to consider a gaming laptop instead.

i've been on the go lately and the Nintendo switch wasn't doing it for me at all. I love to play The Sims 4 and other games and it handles it like a pro. You can run emulators like a breeze too! Exceeded my expectations and just cool to look at lol

An excellent handheld with the power to run pretty much anything you throw at it. Older games run quite smoothly, sitting at a comfortable 90-100 fps for the majority of the time. Higher-end games tend towards 50-60 fps, with occasional dips to 30 fps for more intensive scenes. I got the regular Z1 model, as it satisfies my needs, but if you want better performance, I suggest shelling out for the Z1 Extreme model. The built-in screen is a good size, and plenty vibrant. The built in "Armory Crate" software makes it easy to use as an anytime system by cataloging all your games from any storefront (Steam, Xbox Store, etc.) into a single screen, and starting any required clients or launchers upon selecting a game.

The ASUS ROG Ally 7" Gaming Handheld is an impressive piece of hardware that brings high-quality gaming experiences to a portable format. Its powerful AMD Ryzen Z1 processor and integrated graphics deliver solid performance, while the 120Hz FHD display enhances the visual experience. The device's design is both stylish and functional, making it a joy to use on the go. Although battery life and storage management are always considerations for handheld devices, the ROG Ally strikes a good balance, making it a strong contender in the portable gaming market.

It's not a bad device especially when purchased on sale for the current price. I play older games on this so I don't care about the performance of the newest AAA games. I have a Series X and Desktop for those. The cons I have are not too major, the battery life could be better, Windows 11 still sucks, I think the old Windows 8 tile interface would have been perfect for a device like this. But of course Windows always gets rid of useful things every new version they release. I would have also liked to see an additional USB 4.0 port alongside the proprietary Rog port.

Amazing handheld for playing older/less demanding games. Not the most comfortable handheld out there. My hands will fall asleep holding it sometimes and the battery life isn’t great. thats to be expected though. would definitely recommend getting the ally x over the base ally unless you can get it on sale or in an open box deal like i did.

Bought this a few month and I can tell you I have not put it down. I would have gotten the rog ally x but they were sold out of the time I would give 4.5 stars only because it’s battery doesn’t last too long for AAA games but it’s still has like 1h 30 min play time till it dies. But I got 4hours from kingdom hearts 2 playtime this is worth the buy I promise you.

Overall a great little handheld computer! Forward facing speakers are loud crisp and clear though lacking on the bass. Screen and touch work beautifully and grace your eyes with lovely views at high resolutions. The software can be a little wacky but if you get it to cooperate it does a great job of throttling/overclocking the system for battery saving or running heavier games. Honestly for the price they're asking you can't get much better.

Z1 currently costs less than an LCD Steam Deck of same storage size, but has a better screen. It's good for indie games or any games that are suitable for handhelds. The caveat is that Z1, unlike Z1 Extreme, isn't powerful enough to handle heavyweight games. However, the price difference is currently significant, and unless someone wants to play heavyweight AAA games on a handheld, Z1 can do just fine.

The screen is great, there isn't much storage so you'll need a micro SD card to store more than a few games. Sometimes it runs a little sluggishly and the battery life is terrible (I bought a power bank to minimize that problem) but overall it's a great handheld.
