let me start this off by saying i own numerous desktops, laptops and consoles, and i freakin love this thing to death.
amazing device, don't let influencers do their influencing magic on you, look, i play on a 3060 desktop, and this thing is starting to take over, helldivers i didnt even realize it was sub 50 fps until i turned on fps meter (very short very spaced out lag spikes ignored), (im used to my 244hz monitor usually always 120-200fps any game)
if you can only have one device, and you think portables are for you, then this is it. compared to a laptop of equal value i feel this does better albeit needing a dock to really show itself aside from controller enabled games.
my only two issues i've noticed, is that the light ring edges around the joysticks are rather sharp out of the box, and this caused some joystick wear (actually carved out a groove of the joystick) however there are many 'rubber bands' made to fix this, however im choosing to ignore it as i think they look bad, and nobody has noted any huge issue from this yet as far as i know, and if it does, controller deadzone is built in.
my second issue is that pretty much any dock you can buy including the ROG dock made for it, will eventually have an issue providing 30w turbo mode, and default back to the no-charger connected 25w turbo mode, amung other issues that arise when this shows up (the dock itself is faulty, not the device). Really wish there was a "1 dock to rule them all" situation for this, with near 0 issues within 1 year, heck even 6 months. if you're not playing super demanding things and sweating about fps, then its not an issue, but that 5w, i do notice a difference in apex legends, where i need precision.

I love this thing. It basically became my entire rig. I just use this with a dock now and havent used my desktop in months. Runs fortnite pretty smooth. My only complaint is 16gb ram is just not enough for the pig win11 has become and it obviously cant be upgraded. When the 32gb z2 models start coming out I think thats gonna be the moment where this is all I really need and I can dump the desktop entirely. As a comparison I also have a lenovo i7 1165g7 laptop as well and this device outperforms it pretty much in every task... so I havent used that laptop in months eaither.

Performs well on modern AAA titles despite the step down from the extreme variation. Very much worth the price to performance, better than a similarly priced laptop by a landslide. Its form factor fits well for those with larger hands. I can certainly recommend this over a steam deck, this device has better performance, runs windows which is arguably a better compatible operating system and is built better than you woukd expect from using windows on a non desktop environment. 100/10 if I could.

I love it, I wanted Portable pc and gaming, so far that runs way better than I expected as z1 processor. I runs most games and all works fine after latest update for motion frame somthing (don't exactly remember the name) games runs more smoothly, but I originally buy for portable pc use, I play less games & do more pc stuff, speaker is loud & you can upgrade ssd drive, there is lot of DIY on internet for that device. Rog Ally is my favorite

The ROG ally is a wonderful device for playing Steam, Xbox, and PSplus cloud based games. It has a beautiful screen and isnt super heavy making it comfortable to hold. I hadnt reallt ran into any issues with any games that i threw at it but admittedly I play a lot of jrpg’s which dont always require a ton of power. One thing to know is that it does use Windows which is not fully optimized for handheld devices. You’ll get used to it with time but just be prepared for a lot of updating when you receive it.

This product was 1. a tough choice between its competitor, the Steam Deck (I was not looking into the Lenovo device till later) and 2. What I wanted out of a device of this nature. The Steam Deck, in its own right is amazing, and having the pleasure using it vicariously through my friend I can say that it is a pure gaming device. How it is built, device button binds, down to the OS. It gives you the purest gaming experience you can ask for. The down fall to the Steam Deck is the OS and its compatibility with all of your games. With experience with computing and OS usage you can customize the Steam Deck to do your bidding but if you are not that type of computing person and just want out of the box go the ROG Ally is a better choice. With the use of Windows 11 for the Ally; it is a desktop/laptop that anyone can use out of the box. There is no issue with your games outside of the few that are not compatible with Windows 11 due to age. You can do all of the computing that you are used to at a portable fingertip. The battery life is solid. Playing a game on the Silent speed settings gets me a solid 3-4 hours without any worries. I do push this device as I am always on the go so my phone is attached through Bluetooth and I can still do work when absolutely required. All-in-all when if I am doing a lot on the device I can get 2-3 hours of operating capacity while still playing a game. The lights are nice touch to its aesthetic, but for me personally I am do not need it on my mobile devices so I turned them off with ease through the Armoury Crate software attached to most ASUS devices. I do write this review with knowing that this comes down to brass tax and whom this device is being purchased for, So I hope this helps.

Bought it on sale.
My only issue was the battery life. I purchased this to play emulation and had zero issues running everything up to ps2 games. Controls take some getting used to when playing xbox games, but you can sync up wireless devices.

my son has been wanting to get into PC gaming and i didn't want to buy him a whole gaming PC and risk him not really using it. I was researching handhelds like this and the steamdeck, and I chose this because it's windows based and he could use any game service he wanted to, plus for the sale price the storage was way more. I gave it to him for xmas and he literally hasn't gone a day without using it since. Big win this year! He absolutely loves it. I can't recommend this enough.

The Z1 is definitely underpowered compared to the extreme but it’s more than capable if you don’t mind running AAA games on low. If you’re planning on playing the latest games that push the gpu to its limits you should go with the upgraded version. Only thing that needs improvement would be battery life other than that it’s a great handheld.

I bought this product for an open box so I couldn't beat the price. So when I went to the store to pick it up, it was an excellent condition. It's very powerful unit. You will need a bigger micro SD card or a bigger SSD hard drive to put in it. That's a computer and a game system all in one. I really love this item and I would recommend buying another one if I could. I almost got the extreme version but the non-extreme is about the good as the extreme

Selling points were: 512GB, 1080P screen and $400 on sale. I debated going with a 'Deck' vs a 'MS' powered device. ASUS does include a 'launcher' that sort of helps however navigating WIN with a 'Xbox controller' is painful at best.
After getting through the MS nonsense I loaded Steam on it and installed 3 games from my library. (all of which are fairly OLD IE: not resource intense) 2 out of 3 play fairly normal/as expected while 1 was not even able to drive 1080P with this device. :(
Thankfully it draws low enough power to be fully energized with a USBC charge cord. IDK about battery life, I'd expect/hope a few hours.
Smaller+ligher than bringing a full gaming laptop, uses less power so a 'power brick' might keep it going for a while AND since it is screen+controller in one device no need to carry a bunch of extra stuff.
Wireless wise it is 5G/2.4G Wifi +Bluetooth, lots of connectivity.
The Z1 is one of the weakest CPU/GPU's so don't expect AAA games with better than 'LOW-MID' graphic settings.
I'd say this is 'medium', hence the 3 out of 5 stars.
