The ASUS Rog Ally is basically a Windows tablet with connected controller. The screen size is nice for portable gaming and you get more button controls than you probably know what to do with. Not a bad thing, just depend on the type of games you play. Should meet the needs for any game I can think of. The speaker sound is actually pretty good with the Dolby Atmos, but for the most part I don’t see myself pumping the volume versus using headphones, which is compatible for wired and wireless headset. The finger print login is a nice feature as using the touch screen to do any sort of keyboard typing is not really a good form factor for. The boot up time is pretty slow, which is quite disappointing. Once logged in, you have your typical Windows interface. So any Windows app that you could need should be available in the App Store. From a gaming perspective, it is great that you can connect to Xbox. Any games or subscription you have will be available for download, however like any other PC I have owned, I get various windows errors making this a bit frustrating. I think this would have been better as a Xbox player versus a portable pc gaming device. Take that with a grain of salt coming from a console gamer vs pc. I just think it has a wider capability but opens up for lack of performance or stability with some of the apps. The screen is a good size for portable gaming. The ability to hook up to a display give more of a console type gaming when connecting with multiple wireless controllers. Unfortunately just not overly impressed.

I bought the Extreme version and the moment I started gaming I knew its going to replace my Steam Deck. Display and sound quality are top notch and I can have all my gaming stores ( epic, Steam ….) + game pass which is a must have in one place. Also unlike what reviewers say I found windows OS on Rog to be more touch friendly thant the steam deck desktop mode which can populate keyboard when a text prompt is there also options to float keyboard for places where text boxes are appearing on the button. Overall a solid choice for gaming and easily replaced my SD.

Essentially useless as shipped. Needs steamOS installed to get decent performance. No touchpads make some games unplayable, such as Civilization. Plays FPS type games very well. Rear buttons are awkward to use. External GPU slot is interesting, but has limited use due to custom PCIe connector.

Runs everything I need it too, super convenient. Mostly cozy games, had some crash on startup issues on certain games like enshrouded. There is a really easy compatibility mode setting you can change that will make this device run anything. You’ll need to google it, it’s specific to steam not asus.

The best purchase I have made in awhile!!! The Asus Rog Ally, It works so flawlessly and I love the fact that you can play your steam games on it and xbox game pass too!! It's also a portable PC so you can use it to surf the web and do lots of aw stuff and watch videos as well. Hope to get another one for husband soon!!

Had to return after a few weeks due to financial issues, but it works really well for regular games, not anything to bug though I tried running hell divers in it and it really struggled. Fun for games like Risk of Rain.

Niche use case, Windows platform holds it back

First, anyone that says this replaced their gaming rig, was not a serious gamer and kidding themselves. A hobbyist for sure, but not someone that spends a lot of time and money on their gaming experience. This device sounded like a great idea. A handheld platform giving you the ability to really tap into cloud gaming options like Game Pass and Steam, etc. And it can definitely do this. But out of the box I was met with difficulties just because of the OS platform it's sitting on....Windows. Windows is made for a keyboard and mouse. I was attempting to get it setup and struggled for several mins trying to enter my wifi password just to proceed with setup. Once I got the controls sorted I was able to get around a little better. The touchscreen really helps a lot. But Windows UI is just not geared for sticks and buttons over mouse and keyboard. I love Windows overall, but having a full-blown desktop OS on a handheld like this is a real issue. Aside from controls mentioned above. Windows out of the gate attempts to activate OneDrive and so on just like it does on a PC. So because I used my shared login it's now attempting to sync gigabytes of data to this tiny device automatically. The Asus app that ties the UI into a more handheld mode didn't launch automatically when I set mine up. It does help, but then I was met with nothing but issues with their authentication service. It wanted me to create an account and offered to use my Windows login. So I tried this and it worked, but wanted me to confirm my email. When I clicked the confirm my email it failed repeatedly with an unknown error. I attempted to update my profile but the password was required and didn't sync with the same password as my Microsoft account. I then tried to create a whole new Asus account using my email vs Microsoft account. Same issue with the confirmation email. So I just gave up with this piece as it didn't seem necessary. The screen looks good, the handling is not bad, the buttons and sticks respond well and the touchscreen works great. So the hardware overall is really quite good, but the software is really where it falls short. I feel it really has a limited use case for gaming. FPS games are not going to be ideal on this platform. RTS games might not be bad. Some strategies prob ok. Anything with a lot of control options could be a real chore. Racing and Sports games are going to really shine on this type of platform. I think FIFA (EA FC) or Madden are well done here. Even Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter will fit well here. Cloud gaming tends to require a bit of bandwidth to work well. So now this means being in a place with good connectivity. Being on the road or out and about with it and using tethering or public wifi won't produce the most ideal experience. This platform will help you game on the go with sports, racing, and platformers/scroller style games. Don't expect to be crushing it on COD or Fortnite. I think my kids will enjoy it, but it's not for me.
